THE high number of bodyguards who guardsome politicians and officials in Mhlontlo hasresulted in tension among the municipality thecommunity and opposition parties

Mhlontlo comprises Qumbu and Tsolo andhas 26 wards

Residents and opposition parties are askingwhere the municipality is getting the money topay these bodyguards

They suspect there is misuse of municipalfunds and that money for development or ser-vice delivery is misdirected to pay the body-guards

The appointment of bodyguards followed theambush of the speaker of the council XolileNkompela who is also chairperson of the ANCin the OR Tambo region

The incident took place towards the end oflastyearNkompelarsquosbodyguardwaskilledandthe vehicle they were travelling in was riddledwith bullets

During recent service delivery protests in-Qumbu Nkompela arrived to receive a petitionunder the watchful eye of heavily armed body-guards He himself was armed with a gun at hiswaist

IN a bid to clamp down on sloppyworkmanship in the Eastern Capethe National Home Builders Regis-tration Council (NHBRC) is rollingout a training programme to sharp-en the skills of home inspectors

The training programme is of-fered to municipal building inspec-tors and Human Settlements De-partment inspectors to enhancetheir skills and technical capabili-ties in an effort to curb poor work-manship during construction

The programme was launched intheORTamboregion inpartnershipwith the provincial Department ofHuman Settlements and the ORTambo District Municipality lastweek

The three-day training pro-gramme was facilitated by anNHBRC-accredited training special-ist and it focuses on home buildingtechnical standards building regu-lations and construction processes

NHBRC provincial manager Nom-basa Ngoqo said the training wasaimed at enhancing the perform-ance of inspectors and keepingthem well-informed on buildingand technological advances

ldquoOur training programme focus-es on soils foundations superstruc-ture roofing and finishing healthand safety and alternative and in-novative technologyrdquo she said

We want to keep our internal in-spectors and government abreast ofthe latest developments and trendsin the construction sectorrdquo

Ngoqo said the OR Tambo regionhad been identified as a hotspot dueto the high number of non-compli-ances with home building stan-dards and regulations experiencedin the area

ldquoIn our engagement with the pro-vincial Department of Human Set-tlements and municipalities weidentified a need to sharpen theskills and technical knowledge ofour inspectors so that we can deci-sively deal with non-complying

had been engaging with all relevant credit-ors in the estate and ascertaining theamount of debt eachwas owed by theMagwatea estateThe creditors include theworkers Eskom

SARS and the Unemployment InsuranceFundQhoboshiyane said ldquoI ampleasedwith the

work being done so far by the administratorworking with all creditorsldquoI encourage creditors to work closely

The tournament will be staged at theMkatazo Sports Ground in Elliotdale onMarch 26

Tournament organiser MelinkquboNdabokutya said Eastern Cape kingdomswill use this opportunity to connect withtheir people while shielding them fromthe many ills they faced these days

He said the tournament was more thanjust about sport because it was also away of addressing socio-economic chal-lenges faced by the communities

The Imiganu Easter Sports games arehosted by Imiganu Development Trustwhich was formed by the Imiganu tradi-tional council as a catalyst to drive localeconomic development for the better-ment of its people

The tournament will take place at the KambiAdministrative Area sports grounds on March26 and will continue over two days and wrap upon March 27

This festival has in the past attracted thou-sands of locals from all the villages in the KSDregion Twenty soccer teams and ten netballteams are expected to participate in this yearrsquostournament

Tournament organiser Ndomelele Sidlovasaid the draw for this yearrsquos tournament willtake place at Meyers Motors 55 Madeira StreetMthatha this Saturday (March 19) at 4pm Allteams must be represented at the draw

Sidlova said four of the twenty soccer teamsthat will compete at the tournament will takehome prize money and the top two teams willalsoreceivemedalswiththeoverallwinnerget-ting a floating trophy to show off

The top two netball teams will receive prizemoney and medals with a floating trophy forthe overall winner There will also be give-aways during the two days of the tournamentas a reward for the supporters These will be inthe form of T-shirts and branded caps
