THE Democratic Alliance (DA) will demand afull investigation into the death of a pedestrianwho was mowed down by what they call “theblue light bullies” of EasternCapeRuralDevel-opment and Agrarian Reform, MEC Zoleka Ca-pa on Wednesday.

In a statement issued by Athol Trollip (MPL)and Eastern Cape Provincial Leader of the DA,he said the family contacted the DA to ensure“that there is no cover-up in this matter andthose that are responsible for this ghastly deedare brought to book”.

“My colleague in the legislature, who sits onthePortfolioCommitteeonSafetyandSecurity,Bobby Stevenson, will be tabling a set of parlia-mentary questions about the incident. On theface of it this is a clear case of negligent and

reckless driving. A case of culpable homicideshould be opened,” stated Trollip.

“The blue light bullies are not above the law. They are not permitted to drive at excessivespeeds. The MEC must take note that her posi-tion does not excuse her and her brigade tobreak the law. In the DA-led Western Cape wehave introduced legislation to curb blue lightbrigades.”

“MEC Capa has a social responsibility as apublic representative, elected by the people, tobe an example of how a responsible, law-abid-ing citizen should act.

“Her claims that she was not in the vehicleat the time, does not make her less culpable inthis tragedy. She should not have allowed herconvoy to drive at excessive speed.

LEARNERS of the King Sabatha DalindyeboFurther Education and Training (FET) Col-lege at Maphuzi Campus, believe they’ve fall-en prey to criminals after having been kickedout of the hotel they were renting.

According to reports, the person who iskicking the learners out, is the new ownerwho bought the hostel from its previous own-er.The learners are hospitality students who

forced them out. “Perhaps the rent was neverpaid over from NSFAS and FET,” speculatedone of the students.

The learners were compelled to ask for rentmoney from their parents – some of whomewere not even working – since the school wasnot paying their rent and they were not reim-bursed the rent money from NSFAS by theFET.Learners are worried, because the area in

which many of them are now staying, has ahigh crime rate. They feel unsafe here andsome of the parents aren’t even aware thattheir children were evicted from the hostel. The Express phoned the campus head who

CLIMATE change is a serious risk tovulnerable communities and six of theeight threats recently highlighted by ateam of scientists that gathered in Ja-panarebeingaddressedbySouthAfri-ca’s leading initiative, the EduPlantprogramme.

Severeweatherevents, suchasthoseexperienced in late summer this year, can destroy crops and lead to hungerand famine. Schools that apply Perma-culture principles are better able towithstand such events and maintainfood security, and help to prevent de-bilitatingnutritionaldeficiencies suchas kwashiorkor. Long term droughtscan bemitigated by planting trees andusinginnovativemethodssuchasgreywater harvesting; this is particularlyimportant for the western parts ofSouth Africa, where small changes inweatherpatternscanhavedevastatingconsequences. For two decades the EduPlant team

has supported the development of sus-tainable food gardens and greening.EduPlant has helped schools and theirsurrounding communities to createabundant gardens with year-roundharvests using permaculture practic-es.“EduPlant, initiated in 1994, is part

of Food&Trees forAfrica’s solution toglobal climate change and food securi-ty. We are now calling on schools tosubmit their entries into this year’scompetition, to share with us their in-novations and achievements in theirschool food gardens,” says JoanneCarty, EduPlant Programme Manag-

schools to excel is the biennial Edu-Plant competition and entries for 2014are closing at the end of May.“We are very excited to see this

year’s entries,” says Carty. “Last yearwe focussed on imparting valuable in-depthpermacultureknowledgeviana-tional clusterworkshops sowe are an-ticipatingahigher standard, aswell asmore entries, this year, resulting inthe more stable food security is at theschools.Overthepast20yearswehaveseen the impact and value of schoolslearning from each other at the finalsevent.”The winners of this year’s competi-

NKONKONI Senior PrimarySchool (SPS) in Libode is oneof the schools that will benefitfrom Nedbank’s 2014 Back toSchool programme that willsee R2.5 million invested inEastern Cape schools over thecourse of the year.

The investment comprisesR100 000 to provide new li-brary books, R50 000 towardsmobile laboratories and a fur-ther R10 000 donated to pro-

vide soccer kits.Kone Gugushe, Divisional

Executive for Corporate So-cial Responsibility at Ned-bank, said the donation takesthe total investment in the ar-ea to almost R600 000, follow-ing the investment of R435 334to schools in the Eastern Capeearlier this year.

“Nedbank believes thatstrong private-public partner-ships are necessary in orderto provide good quality educa-tion for the children andyouth of South Africa. Educa-tion is one of our key focus ar-

eas, because we believe thatthe creation of a knowledge-based economy is critical tothe future growth of our coun-try. Our approach is thatmeaningful and practical in-terventions are necessary inaddressing some of the chal-lenges, which hinder theprogress of disadvantagedlearners,” said Gugushe.

The Back to School cam-paign, which demonstratesclose cooperationwith theDe-partment of Basic Education, was first established in 2010as part of Fundisa, Nedbank’sholistic education pro-gramme. Since the pro-gramme was started it has in-vested over R8 million tomore than 8000 learners’ uni-forms, shoes, stationery, books and bags. In 2014, Ned-bank plans to invest R2.5 mil-lion in order to benefit 2000learners across South Africa.

“Our holistic school pro-gramme follows a two-pillareducation intervention mod-el. The first focuses on educa-tion from early childhood de-velopment through to tertiaryeducation. The second ena-bles holistic support for bene-ficiary schools, through infra-structure development, teach-er training, leadershipcapacity and provision ofclassroom-based support.

“Quality education shouldnot be the privilege of the few.It is a right for all childrenandNedbank is committed to ini-tiating programmes that seekto empower the youth ofSouth Africa.”
