THE Eastern Cape Education MEC, MandlaMakhupula, has lambasted schools that keepaccepting large numbers of pupils, sayingthis causes chaos in teaching and learning.

Makhupula was speaking during a visit tothe Ngangolwandle Senior SecondarySchool in Elliotdale, where he was aston-ished by the high enrolment of more than2 000 pupils.

“This school accommodated more than therecommended number of pupils and that re-

flected on us as a department even thoughwe never recommended such a large num-ber,” said Makhupula.

He said the required number was 1 000,meaning that this school had the equivalentof two schools.

The extra pupils were not benefiting fromgovernment assistance because they werenot on the roll which records the registrationof schools throughout the province. Hestressed that the enrolment in the school wasunacceptable and urged parents to apply fortheir children in advance.

“The applications must be submitted in

September in order to ease the challenges ofregistering learners after the normal time ofregistration.”

He committed himself to assist by seeingif they could not add another high school inthe area to avoid the overcrowding.

“I am going to send a team here to sit withthe community, traditional leaders andschool governing body to discuss the matterof the new school. This must happen beforethe end of June,” he said.

THE Eastern Cape Department of Educationhas allocated R27-million to set up school li-braries for 2015-2016 in the province.

This was revealed by the Head of EducationLibraries and Information Services in theEastern Cape, Nomawetu Jonas, in an exclu-sive interview withExpresswhile she was offi-cially handing over a library at the ZimbaneValley Junior Secondary School in Mthathalast week.

This initiative was a response to the declara-tion of the national minister of education totreat libraries as one of the national priorities.

Three schools in Mthatha benefited fromthis programme last week - Zimbane and theKhwezi Community and Mpheko Senior Sec-ondary schools.

“We are going to set up 1 112 school librariesand train 2 224 teachers who will participate. We hope that by 2019 all the schools in theEastern Cape will have libraries,” Jonas said.

By doing this, they were trying to restore theculture of reading and promote it.

“We realised that our children cannot readand that is why they are not performing inGrade 12. The core business of the library isto encourage pupils to read and love books, even at an early age, so that they can developreading skills,” she said.

The initiative will run in all 22 districts andthe teachers will have the opportunity to gettraining in research information skills. Teach-ers have welcomed the initiative, saying it willhelp pupils as they normally only get to knowhow to use libraries when they reach the terti-ary level. Zimbane Valley teacher VuyokaziGcangca expressed her gratitude to the depart-ment for its good idea.

THE gossip team would like to take its hat offto the announcement of alcohol regulationsthat will be functional throughout Mzansisoon. What do they say? Come closer and wewill give you the news, views and flashes njengokuba ucinga sibondaba zabantu nje. Kalo-ku the regulations stipulate shorter tradinghours than previously allowed, a call for trad-ers to provide patronswith free tapwater andcondoms, and prohibit sale of liquor to peoplewho are already intoxicated. Ja, sikhathelengabantu abasihlupha sisafika ema-shebeenskanti bona sebezenelisile. I wonder what willhappen to those who stay there kude kuse ku-le yokuncitshiswa kwamaxesha okuthengi-sa?

Don’t play with fire boyYouknowwhat, even if youare or you think

you are a perfect driver, don’t try it in fullview of the people and when you are drunkbecause amehlo abantu ayingozi sometimes.Alcohol reduces the power of your brain if notyour mind and you cannot think that you cando what you normally do when you are sober.I wonder why Gesh now?Wewere astonishedwhen we saw a young boy playing with fireandhis life.Go to thepointMagesh.Whathap-pened? This boy was grand drunk during thecelebration of PK’s birthday in So WhatLounge, Vulindlela Heights, and he enteredthe car and tried to spin it, ibetha isidudlaukutsho oko. How can you do that while youare totally drunk? While he was trying it hehit the edge of the road and then he stopped. His friends came rushing to pull him out be-cause they could see ukuthi he was digginghis own grave. Yhoh, he came out but unableto stand on his own. Perhaps he was tryingto commit suicidebut in a strategicwayyesid-udla. OW!! People can risk with their lives.

Intombi emnyama no-beer ngamanzinamafuthaNoba ungathini akuyonto yakuthi thina

Some people are overstepping their au-thoritySome people when they hold positions

where they work they sometimes oversteptheir authority umntu afune kuviwe ngayenoma esethetha ento engekhoyo. What hap-pened guys? Well we visited another govern-ment institutionwith a hope of taking a photowhich the seniors had agreed could be takenbut one person refused and said it was not al-lowed even though we know it was allowedand the rumours making rounds was that hewas only nice to those who gave him some-thing. Thina as Umgosi we don’t believe thatyou have to pay someone for doing the jobwhich he is paid to do. Don’t ask us who thatis, but he will know when he reads this piece, asifuni kuthetha kakhulu qha umntu xa eb-hatalwaukwenzaumsebenziwakhemakonel-iswe iloko angaphazamisani nabafuna uk-wenza imisebenzi yabo.Asike sithi shelele until next time with the

said he had not been confident theteamwould evenget to theprovin-cials, but said the boyshadprovedhim wrong.“We were well prepared and I

had a bit of hope and was sur-prised at how easy the passageturned out to be. We scored 10goals and conceded just three,” hesaid.“The team played exceptionally

well and they listened to allmy in-structions. I’m proud of the boys, even if we don’t come out as na-tional winners come June 27.”Mdedelwa said their strategy

going into the provincials hadbeen to keep possession at alltimes, use the entire field, andtake their scoring chances.“I always stress the importance

of discipline to the team. I tell theplayers to play by the rules and al-ways accept the referee’s deci-sions.”The plan for the nationals is to

continue with the same strategythat won the team the provincialtitle. “I don’t want to confuse theteamas they are comfortablewithhowthingshavebeendoneso far.”The coach sees the biggest

threat coming from Gauteng.“They have better infrastructure

and qualified coaches, but I al-ways tell the team that when twoteams are on the field it does notmatter where they come from. What matters is how the teamsplay.”The nationals will be tough,

Mdedelwa knows. “The best nineschools will be competing and allof the teams will have the samegoal, namely to go toMorocco andrepresent South Africa.“I definitely want my school to

Sidinile, whom Khonco recently signedwith, said the upcoming fight was in the high-est ranking and was the one they had prom-ised him when he joined Sijuta.

“The fight is finally taking place and wepromise him that when he wins in Septemberwe will do whatever it takes for him to getmany other fights on the international level,”Sidinile said.

“We are certain he will win the fight. If wehad no hope in him, we would have neversigned him, so we know that he is the onlyboxer who can beat Budler and many otherboxers in his rankings.”

Sidinile said Khonco was still very young, disciplined and humble and had a bright fu-ture.

Khonco was as certain about winning thefight as his promoter.

“I know Hekkie Budler. He is a good cham-pion and he has proven himself many times, but I will make sure that I win the fight. Iam asking for all the support I can get,” hesaid.

Dyonase said, “We will have to work veryhard because this will not be an easy fightand Khonco is challenging a champion, butI trust him,”

Khonco will go to Johannesburg in July toprepare for the big fight, which will be heldat Emperor’s Palace.
