j Prayer for the Canonization of Father Michael J. McGivney God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan, you

called your priest, Father Michael J. McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life

and to lead the young to the generous service of their neighbor. Through the example

of his life and virtue may we follow your Son, Jesus Christ, more closely, fulfilling his

commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church. Let the

inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we

may continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that

you glorify your venerable servant Father Michael J. McGivney on earth according to

the design of your holy will. Through his intercession, grant the favor I now present

(here make your request). Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be.

NORTH DAKOTA STATE COUNCIL MISSION STATEMENT

As an order of Catholic men we witness to Christ by dedicating ourselves to the ideals of

Columbianism: Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism; principles that guide us to perform works

of charity and service to our membership, our parish and our community.

Knights of Columbus State Prayer O Divine Redeemer Jesus Christ, as You were placed in the crib by Mary your Mother, we remember how You came to us as a helpless Child. I humbly adore and thank You for having humbled Yourself to be born in a stable for my Salvation. I wish that I could show You tenderness, as your Virgin Mother held you close to Her Immaculate Heart. I wish that I could praise You with the joy of the angels, singing their Gloria’s! I wish that I could kneel before You with the faith of St. Joseph, your Foster Father. Now, uniting myself with these first adorers at Your crib, I promise as a Brother Knight and Faithful Son of the Church, to unite my family and work to be spiritually renewed by your Nativity. Grant that from this day forward, I may seek your greater glory, and may enjoy that peace promised to “men of good will” (Luke 2:14). Amen!

State Deputy “Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel,”

which means “God with us.” (Matthew 1:23)

Because of Christ’s death and resurrection, we truly can receive the gift of “God with us.” He is not just with us as a friend who walks beside us, but “God with us” as He comes to give us strength in place of weakness and courage in place of fear. In these unprecedented times in which we all are currently living remember that because of Jesus we are never alone. We can simply rest knowing “God with us” and He will never leave us. As I begin my first term as the State Deputy for the North Dakota Knights of Columbus it is truly and honor and privilege to have been elected to serve the Knights of North Dakota. I will do the very best I can to lead our great organization. Membership growth is key to the sustainability of our great organization and as our Supreme Knight has said, "It is our moral obligation to invite every eligible Catholic man to join the Knights of Columbus.” We are asking each of you to assist our membership team in growing and retaining membership within the State of North Dakota. As Brother Knights we are called to step into the breach and leave no neighbor behind – especially in this time of crisis. The Leave No Neighbor Behind program encourages our Brother Knights to engage in five specific types of service activities:

1. Support Your Brother Knights 2. Support Your Parish 3. Support Your Community 4. Feed the Hungry 5. Participate in Blood Drives

We are asking each of you to work side-by-side with our programming team to fully implement this new program within your council and throughout our jurisdiction. As Brother Knights when crisis strikes, we respond with care, compassion, and charity. It is time for all Brother Knights to answer the call – and Leave No Neighbor Behind. Helen Keller the great American author and lecture said, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” We have a great team of Brother Knights that will help lead the North Dakota Knights of Columbus during the upcoming year and together we can and will accomplish great things. Please feel free to contact myself or any of your State Officers with any questions and/or assis-tance you may need. Vivat Jesus Mike Steiner, State Deputy

Membership Director

Hello Brother Knights of North Dakota, Membership in the Knights of Columbus is more prosperous now mor than ever. Helping our communities , parishes, and neighbors is needed more than ever. We can share the good work with our fellow catholic brothers and invite them to join you in the journey today. Membership drives in the Fall and Spring will help fuel the manpower necessary to execute the programs your councils put on throughout the year. Invite the whole family to partake in the experience of becoming a Knight. With our New Degree, members can bring the whole family to experience the degree, and truly join as a “family”. The single degree will combine the previous three degrees into one an your parish priest will play a vital role in the new de-gree as well. The on-line membership program is a great opportunity for Catholic gentlemen to join the Knights and a great growth opportunity for local councils. Building a council specific landing page will be a necessity to help drive our council to recruit any where, any time, any place. Work closely with your Insurance agent to achieve your Insurance goals. These agents can help recruit for your council, and should be included in your events. There are Churches out there that are too small to have their own Council. We can help them by setting up a roundtable each year to support their local church and is another way to build membership in your council by filling out the roundtable form each year. Faith in Action programs are a vital resource to recruit new members in the parish. Invite fami-lies to these events, and have materials around “Why be a Knight” and invite them to learn more. Talk with the young men in our high schools and help them in their journey into college by joining the Knights before they leave, and seek out a College council to continue their faith. If you ever have questions, need ideas or best practices, please reach out to our membership team: Kevin Boehm, George Lacher, Duane Zwinger, Dick Niebauer and Mike Steiner. Qualifications for Membership In the Knights of Columbus

The qualifications for membership in the Knights of Columbus are set down in Section 101 of the Laws of the Order. They are as follows: “Membership in the Knights of Columbus is open to men 18 years of age or older who are practical (that is, practicing) Catholics in union with the Holy See. This means that an applicant or member accepts the teaching authority of the Catholic Church on matters of faith and mor-als, aspires to live in accord with the precepts of the Catholic Church, and is in good standing in the Catholic Church. PRACTICAL CATHOLIC–Guidelines have been established to assist in judging the practical Cath-olicity of an applicant or member. Those guidelines also appear in our Grand Knight’s Hand-book (#9150). If questions arise at any time as to the candidate’s practical Catholicity, the Proposer or the Admissions Committee should consult the council chaplain and/or the candidate’s pastor. No council should be judging a candidate when it comes to qualifications of his catholicity That must be left up to the parish priest. NEW FORM 100

Online Form 100 / Candidate Tab Does the Online Form 100 / “Candidate” tab fully replace the paper Form 100? In order for a council to submit information into the “Candidate” tab, they should first have a man complete and sign a paper Form 100. Once the information is submitted into the “Candidate” tab, the completed paper Form 100 should be kept for council records and shared with state and district leaders as well as general and field agents, as you normally would. What types of member transactions can be processed using the “Candidate” tab? New members, reactivations and transfers can be processed using the “Candidate” tab. Deaths and suspensions must be processed by submitting a completed paper Form 100 via e-mail or postal mail to the Supreme Office Membership Records Department. Who can add a member to the council using the “Candidate” tab? Only a council’s grand knight or financial secretary will have the “Candidate” tab on their Officers Online screen and only they can submit information via this application. How long does it take for a member’s information to be processed using the “Candidate” tab? New members who have not previously been a squire, member or insurance client, will be processed nearly instantaneously. Reactivations, transfers and other applicants who may have a previous client account, will go to a Membership Records Department member to be reviewed and processed. These applications should be processed and posted within 2-3 business days. What fields are required on the candidate tab? In order to submit a member transaction via the “Candidate” tab, the following fields must be submitted: First Name, Last Name, Date of Birth, Cell Phone, Email, Address, Zip/Postal Code, City, State, and Country. Fields such as Title, Middle Initial, Suffix, Address Line 2 and Proposer are optional fields. An individual’s membership number is not required to process transferring members and, thus, not a field on the “Candidate” tab. What if a member does not have an email or cell phone number? Are these fields re-quired? When using the “Candidate” tab, these fields are required and applicants that do not have one or both of these fields should have their council submit the paper copy of their Form 100 via e-mail or postal mail to the Supreme Office Membership Records Department.

Fraternal Leaders,

If you are not already aware of it, there is an area on the Supreme website (www.knights.net)

where Catholic men interested in joining the Knights of Columbus can become members.

Online membership is one of the easiest ways to recruit a new member into the Order.

When the prospective member completes the Online Membership Form on the Supreme web

site, an email is automatically generated and sent to the State Membership Director and

Online Membership Chairman. The email is then forwarded to the Grand Knight and Financial

Secretary for an admission.

Always respect the Online Member’s wishes when contacted. First impressions are very

important. It is essential to act on the referral on a timely basis, and to do the follow-up quick-

ly, whether it be the District Deputy, Grand Knight, Financial Secretary, Council Membership

Chairman or Field Agent. For the online membership program to be effective, it is important

the final outcome (whether the prospect has joined or not) be reported back to the State

Online Membership Chairman.

I have found from experience that putting a monthly advertisement in your Church bulletin

pointing to the Online Member form on the Supreme web site helps those interested Catholic

gentlemen to join our Order. Just put an ad like this one in your church bulletin: “If you are

interested in serving our parish and our community, helping those in need, and growing in

your faith, then the Knights of Columbus is the organization for you. You can get additional

information and find out how to join the Knights in your local council by going to the Supreme

web site “www.knights.net”

Grand Knights, Financial Secretaries and Council Membership Chairman, if a referral comes to

you, please act on it right away and set the admission process in motion – then . . . FOLLOW-

Online Membership Landing Page

The prospect then has the option to join our order as an online member. Once they join as an online member, Su-preme does a fabulous job of nurturing the individual with email and online content that highlights the great work we do. When they become an online member, you’ll also receive an email from me that they have been assigned to your council. It’s up to the individual councils to reach out to the online member and invite them to a meeting or event and make them feel welcome. Eventually, when they are ready, they will convert to a full-fledged Knight and member of your council through an exemplification. For more information, visit: https://nd-kofc.org/online-membership or give me a call.

For a successful membership drive, follow the campaign steps: A. Who do I invite?

Potential candidates

Grand Knight

A brother knight their age

Priest of parish

B. Preparation

Have a video about Fr. McGivney to show after the dinner

Have form 100 available

Have a folder with information....holy cards from K of C; brochures on K of C

• Write a personal letter, (1 month before dinner) on church letterhead and invite them to the priest’s home for supper. Explain why they are invited, to speak about the Knights of Columbus, and that this important that they respond. Time, place of meeting (priests house preferable-because nobody ever gets to the priest’s house).

• Then after 1 week, make a personal call, to reach out and ask them if they have the date open, can they come, and visit about how they are doing.

• A day before the dinner, call everyone to remind them about the dinner coming up.

• When people come, have snacks, drinks (both kind alcoholic and non-alcoholic)

• hen we have dinner. Have then talk about themselves. The priest is the lead, not the Grand Knight or other Knights. You want them to feel important and let the guest talk about their interests.

• After the main dinner, this is where the priest begins to speak about the Knights and give local history, important activities, and about Fr. McGivney. Then show the short video on Fr. McGivney.

• Ask the knights present to share why they are Knights and their personal story.

• Then they are given the form 100, with dessert, and a date in a weeks’ time to bring them into the Knights of Columbus.

• Follow up with them in a few days to confirm the date and their attendance of the degree.

Sample pulpit talk for recruitment Hello Father, ladies, brother Knights and families.

My name is (Your name) from the Knights of Columbus:

Someone asked me after learning that I was a member of the Knights of Columbus. “What are the Knights and tell

me everything that they do?” The Knights of Columbus are unique in the Catholic Church. We owe this to the

founder of our Order and his inspired vision, the servant of God, Father Michael J. McGivney. For many years we

have identified ourselves as a Catholic family, fraternal, service organization. We are each of those things inde-

pendent of the other; for example, we are a Catholic organization or a service organization. It is the combination

of both of these that makes us unique and gives us strength.

First of all, our devotion to our faith makes us unique. Our roots are in our Catholic parish. Our founder was a

priest. Our service programs are informed by our faith.

Our willingness to give of ourselves for the church and community, for families in need, for brother knights and

young people results annually in record amounts of charity and service.

To truly be a Knight is to live the virtues of Columbianism. That is also part of Father McGivney’s vision. We are

always striving to be better Catholic men, better husbands, fathers, and sons, better citizens, better neighbors,

better leaders…What is unique for us is the spiritual dimension; what the Second Vatican Council referred to as

“the universal call to holiness.” That is the spirit of the Order.

I come to you today to inform you of some of possibilities here at (Your Parish) but only with your help. We need

more families to join our family, the Knights of Columbus, to better serve the needs of the priest and parish.

Knights of Columbus in their local churches serve as; ushers, greeters, ministers, cooks, janitors, baby sitters,

painters, and last year the North Dakota Knights of Columbus donated in excess of $50,000 to seminarians and

religious for their studies, you name it the Knights are probably doing it. You have an active Knights of Columbus

council here in but we need you and your family.

We can offer you a fraternal group that works and plays together while promoting our Catholic faith. The oppor-

tunity to help your pastor in caring for your church and community, to help our youth in programs available such

as essay contests, coloring contest, scholarships, sporting events, and programs for the parish. Knights also

support the RSVP vocations program, Pennies for Vocations, and Home on the Range, and Special Olympics.

You might say we are we already doing most of the programs, yes hopefully you are. The Knights offer leadership

and organization to the pastor and church, along with other benefits.

The list of things we have to offer is endless and I know you would get tired of listening to me.

Please stop after Mass and visit with members of the Knights. Better yet, come and join us. We want and need all

of you.

The peace of Jesus Christ be with you and the blessings or Our Lady of Fatima grant you ever lasting life.

Thank you for your time.

Membership Retention

Each council MUST appoint one of its members as Membership Retention

Chairman. THIS CANNOT BE THE FINANCIAL SECRETARY. This member will

work closely with the Grand Knight and Financial Secretary each month to mon-

itor the status of their current membership.

The State Membership Retention Chairmen’s most important duty is to make

a personal contact with the member. A telephone call followed by a visit with

him and his family, either at his house or at the church following Mass. During

the visit explain the Daily Mass benefit and why “Be a Knight”.

State Deputy Mike Steiner will follow the suspension procedures that are

found in this handbook. They MUST BE FOLLOWED.

Also encourage the Financial Secretary to enclose a copy of the Membership

Retention Letter with his second billing. A sample can be found on the next

page.

Suspension, Billing, & Retention Guidelines

1. The financial secretary shall mail the Membership Bill (First Notice) 15 days prior to the billing period. Nor-mally mid-December.

2. If the payment is not received within 30 days from the first notice, the financial secretary will mail a Mem-bership Bill – Second Notice. (mid-January)

3. If the payment is still not received within 30 days from the second notice then the following actions will the taken:

1. The financial secretary should try making contact with all delinquent members via Email to alert them of the

processes that follow. - This is a courtesy providing the member has Email.

2. The Financial Secretary will send a Knight Alert letter (Form# KA1) to each delinquent member, signed by the

grand knight and the trustees listing their contact information so that the delinquent member can contact them.

3. The financial secretary will provide the names, addresses, telephone numbers and the amounts of the delin-

quency for each member in the arrears to the retention committee (or GK and trustees). The committee should include – but is not limited to – the grand knight,; membership director; retention chairman; trustees; and any oth-er members who wish to participate.

4. About 2 weeks after the Knight Alert has been sent out the grand knight will assign a member of the committee

(listed above in line 3) to make personal contact with the delinquent member to remind them of their obligation. They should ascertain any reasons for failure to pay. The committee member will provide a written report of his findings to the Grand Knight. If the member is experiencing financial difficulty, the Grand Knight will direct the com-mittee members to visit the member and make arrangements to accommodate him )either a payment plan or oth-er financial arrangement acceptable to the council).

5. Again, a full report is to be provided to the grand knight as to why the member Is delinquent and why he is con-

sidering leaving the Order. Financial difficulty is not a valid reason for suspension.

6. Following this month a member that is still delinquent in his dues - the Notice of Intent to Retain is the be sub-

mitted by the financial secretary and the grand knight.

7. Once accepted by Supreme, the Grand Knight must send electronically the Conversation Listing to the District

Deputy, State Retention Chairman, State Membership Director, and State Deputy. Along with a report of what the council has done and concluded for the member to be retained.

8. If the delinquent member does not meet his obligation or arrange a satisfactory payment schedule within 60

days following processing the Notice of Intent to Retain, the council may file a Form 100 Membership Document, indicating suspension. However, the suspension will not be processed at the Supreme Council office unless a No-tice of Intent to Retain has been on file of the required 60 days.

9. The Notice of Intent to Retain becomes null and void 90 days following the date it is recorded at the Supreme

Council office. After the 90-day period has elapsed, the form will be removed from the file under the assumption the council has been successful in retaining the member.

Notes: If subsequently the member on whom the council previously filed a Notice of Intent to retain should again become delinquent, the entire billing/retention process must be re-implemented as described herein. If a member is not suspended by May 1st he is carried through the next entire Columbian year on the councils Per Capita. If the council is making all its requirements to achieve Star Council I would suggest not suspending the members but carrying the number of members needed to make the Star Council Award until the start of the new Columbian year on July 1st, even if this means starting the billing/retention process over again.

Dear Brother Knight John Doe and Spouse, be sure his name appears

Please read this letter before you make any decisions.

It has come to our attention that your local council has sent you a notice of intent

to retain from the Order of the Knights of Columbus.

Please read this letter to see what you will be losing. There are two particularly

important items.

Give a gift of a lifetime, only available to all Knights of Columbus Members.

What better gift could you leave your family than a Daily Mass for the repose of

the soul of their mother and father. Yes, since the inception of the Order, a Daily

Mass is offered for all deceased members and their spouse at St. Mary’s Church in

New Haven Ct., the birthplace of the Order.

What will you lose? Why do you want to lose it? Can we can fix it?

Please forward your dues to the local council or return it to me for processing. If

you have moved and want to transfer to another council fill out a form 100 and

send it back. If you still prefer to withdraw from the Knights please write that you

would like to withdraw your membership on this letter and return it back and I

will take care of the rest of the details.

Roundtable “A Knights of Columbus Presence in Every Parish.”

Living in service to all is one of the most dynamic qualities of being a Knight. A unique way

for Knights to serve is by helping out in local parishes, especially in those churches that do

not have a Knights of Columbus presence and are not large enough to have their own coun-

cil. The Order requests council members to extend services to such parishes. This can be ac-

complished by establishing a Parish Round Table in which current member Knights help local

parishes. The parish priest will identify the services he requires. The Parish Round Table Co-

ordinator will then work with members of the Parish Round Table and the council to fulfill

his wishes.

A Round Table Form 2629– Report of Round Table Coordinator is available from the

Supreme office for proper set up of a Round Table.

• A Coordinator is needed. He reports to the local council once a month.

• There are no elected offices

• There are no regular meetings

• There are no dues

Benefits of a Round Table:

• The Pastor sets the programs

• Pastor involvement is as he wishes

• Obtaining membership goals are made easier

• You are helping your Parish Community

• You are helping your Parish Priest in his efforts

Ceremonials

In the beginning of 2020, we introduced the combined 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Degree ceremonials into one exemplification ceremony. It has taken all the pillars of the previous degrees, Charity, Unity, and Fraternity and made one unified powerful message in a 35-minute ceremony. Another major change is that you are welcome and encouraged to bring your spouse and family. The days of secrecy are gone and now Knights are encouraged to join as a family. Your parish priests will play a major role in your exemplifications, so please get them I nvolved, and communicate often with them on when you plan to host a ceremonial, preferably after a mass. With the new combined exemplification of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd degree, we are asking that each council schedule a monthly combined exemplification ceremony. With the new combined version available online, it should be very easy for any council to show and host monthly exemplifications so anyone who is actively recruiting can have a date and time each month that is consistent. When there are no new candidates to bring in, those monthly exemplifica-tions can be targeted to get current 1st degree members moving thru the 2nd and 3rd degree by showing the same video. The pillar of the 4th degree is still Patriotism and will still have a “live” exemplification. The District Master and Faithful Navigator are responsible for scheduling the 4th degree exempli-fications and to assemble a team to perform the ceremony. This degree is still held as a stand-alone exemplification. This year we are going to be scheduling two statewide membership weekends. We are asking all councils to schedule the new combined exemplification on the weekends of October 23rd, 24th, and 25th 2020. You can pick the date that weekend and the specific time, but it would be beneficial to schedule a membership drive at the same time. We will be doing another statewide membership drive April 23rd, 24th, and 25th 2021. Ceremonial Chairman Richard Niebauer 701-371-0131 c [email protected]

Insurance

Following are some examples of support that we can offer the State Office, as well as our

Local Councils.

SUPPORT

Since there are a number of newly elected officers statewide, the Agency would like to re-

mind everyone of the support that the Agency Field Force can offer you. We would like to

work closely with all the State Officers and Grand Knights when it comes to Insurance

Promotion and also assist when possible with Membership Recruitment.

DEVELOP A PLAN

The Grand Knight should feel free to call the General Agent or Field Agent to develop a plan

involving promotions for both council meeting attendance and the Order’s insurance

program.

TEAMWORK

Throughout the Order, our Fraternal and Insurance aspects must be blended into a smooth

working team. Such is the task of the Grand Knights and the Insurance Promotion and

Membership Chairman. General Agents and Field Agents are an integral part of the council’s

membership and retention campaigns. Their expertise regarding the Fraternal Benefits of

the Order and their knowledge of the members of their councils is invaluable. Use these

professional assets to your advantage.

COMMUNICATION

Communication is the key to everyone’s success, so feel free to contact General Agent – Pat

Dolan, or any of the Field Agents with any concerns or questions you may have.

New Council Development

Father Michael J. McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus to be a fraternity of men distinguished by their Catholicity. Such a fraternity as this – pillared on the virtues of Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism, and ordered towards the good of the poor and the family – is indispensable to the parishes and communities of our time.

A Knights of Columbus council is a concrete opportunity for men to participate in a fraternity that fosters the mission of the Church. In light of this, the Order encourages the formation and reactivation of councils so that men may live out the Faith in their parishes and communities. Men as Knights of Columbus become leaders and role models, not only by participating in Order-wide activities, programs, and initiatives, but also (and primarily) in developing unique activities oriented towards the specific needs in the parish and community of their council. As such, these men, through the services of their council and the fellowship of their fraternity, encounter the person of Jesus Christ and experience the Triune Love, making them better husbands, better fathers, better men.

Process of Forming a New Council: The following is intended to be a summary of the process for forming a new council of the Knights of Columbus. More detailed guidelines can be found in the New Council Development Guidelines booklet #2119 available from the Supreme Council (www.kofc.org).

1. Contact District Deputy & New Council Development Chairman 2. Obtain Pastor approval and support 3. Complete Notice of Intent to form a Council (Form #133) 4. Recruitment members

• Understand and convey to potential members the mission of the Order

• Minimum of 20 members needed 5. Initiate new members 6. Conduct first meeting

• Elect officers and chairmen 7. Complete and send necessary documents to Supreme

• Upon approval, Supreme will assign new council with a number 8. Complete formal request for Council Charter

Please feel free to contact me for guidance in forming a new council of the Knights of Columbus! We are more then determined to assist you and your fellow brothers in forming this fraternity to answer our Lords invitation: “Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me” (Matthew 25:40).

State Program Director’s Report

Faith in Action Brother Knights, I am excited to serve as your new State Program Director for this fraternal year. We are entering our

third year of the Faith in Action program format and we have made good progress in regard to getting

through the learning curve to understand them and what fell into what category. This year we are go-

ing to continue to work through fine tuning each activity and get more councils actively participating

and reporting the great programs that are happening across the state.

We will continue to use the new reporting system implemented last year which focuses on the Faith in

Action and Membership activities. Each month when you complete a Faith in Action program, you will

be able to submit and check off that you are working to complete your SP-7 at the end of the fraternal

year and help become a star council!

The State Deputy Award of Excellence will follow the same format introduced last year. Councils will be

required to complete a determined amount of activities. All required reporting forms for Supreme,

membership recruitment, Faith in Action programs, and State Activities will all be required to be

reported each month. Please go to the new updated state website www.nd-kofc.org and fill out your

reports by the 10th of the following month you hold your meeting. Remember, reports should be from

the previous month.

Please remember to send photos, short write ups, and events that you have done to Edith Schall for

the ND Discover Newsletter. We really love seeing the great activities that councils do each month, on

how we help people in need, promote the faith, and grow the Knights of Columbus.

State Service Awards are a great way to showcase an outstanding project that was completed by

your council. A simple write up of the project along with some pictures will give the opportunity to win

at the state level and move on to the international level. We have so many councils that do great pro-

jects for their church, community and faith. Please submit a State Service award this year and display

the great works happening across the State.

Finally, please reach out with any questions, concerns or ideas you have. We want to make

these activities the best they can be, and the only way to make that possible is regular participation by

all councils, consistent monthly reporting and submitting State Service Awards.

Vivat Jesus,

State Program Director

Leave No Neighbor Behind Separation, even isolation, is a hallmark of the COVID-19 crisis. While adher-ing to safety guidelines, Knights are encouraged to participate in the Order’s “Leave No Neighbor Behind” action plan according to their ability, so to make sure that no one in the community is forgotten. “Christ’s words ‘Love your neighbor as yourself’ are particularly important right now, and he made clear that our neighbor was anyone in need,” said

Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson. “We have provided vital support at key moments - including during the 1918 flu pandemic, during two world wars, and after natural disasters. Our ‘Leave No Neighbor Be-hind’ initiative continues that tradition.”

The initiative consists of the following five “pillars” of charity: 1. Support Your Brother Knights - No council should leave a Brother Knight behind. Through tools in-cluding phone trees and daily check-ins, councils can make sure that all members, especially the elderly and those living alone, are well and have the essentials they need. 2. Support Your Parish - Pastors have lost the traditional methods of charitable and evangelical out-reach need help to fulfill the Church’s mission. Councils must show that Knights stand ready to support their pastor and the parish community, ensuring that no member of the parish is forgotten or goes hungry. 3. Support Your Community - As a result of quarantine measures, many find themselves cut off and isolated – especially those without family and community support systems. Some needs may be physi-cal, while others are social, emotional or spiritual. Whatever the need, councils are encouraged to as-sess and creatively support their broader community 4. Feed the Hungry - Now, more than ever, many are unable to provide adequate food for their fami-lies. Knights are especially encouraged to donate to local food pantries and soup kitchens directly or through the Supreme Council fund – and coordinate donations from their parish and others in the com-munity. 5. Participate in Blood Drives – Many communities are facing blood shortages, and Knights who are in good health, under 60 years of age and do not have any underlying health conditions are encouraged to donate. In addition, councils in many jurisdictions are sponsoring drives, continuing a work of the Knights of Columbus that dates to the 1930’s. A guidebook for the “Leave No Neighbor Behind” initiative, with detailed action steps and resources, can be down loaded at www.kofc.org/neighbor. These programs are meant to be a foundation for your efforts and those of your council. Where you see opportunities to do more, you are encouraged to do so, always mindful of guidelines and suggested procedures from national and local health ex-perts. Abide by social distancing, self-quarantine, and shelter-in-place orders, where applicable. Do not put yourself or others at risk of infection. Above all else, remember your duty as a Knight of Columbus. When crisis strikes, we respond with care, compassion and charity. It is time for all of us to answer the call – and leave no neighbor behind. As you and your council take specific action to support your parish and community, please let the Su-preme Council know. We may want to highlight your efforts. Submit your stories to [email protected]

Knights of Columbus Safe Environment Program

Our Safe Environment Program safeguards children and other vulnerable persons, as-sures members and their families that we maintain a safe environment for all those whom we serve, protects members from awkward situations, misunderstandings and

appearances of impropriety, builds trust with arch/dioceses and parishes, and protects the good name of the Knights of Columbus. Our program is operated in conjunction with our strategic partner in youth protection and safe environments – PRAESIDIUM, Inc. Praesidium specializes in providing safe environment training to help prevent sexual abuse in organizations that serve youth and vulner-able adults. For more information, go to www.praesidiuminc.com. Under Faith in Action, members serving in the key leadership positions listed below are required to complete three training modules designed to teach members about abuse prevention best practices, either online or via workbook self-study guides. Members serving in the following leadership roles must make sure that all Knights of Columbus safe environment policies and procedures are followed at activities sponsored by the Knights of Columbus:

Additionally, state youth directors, state family directors, state community directors, state squire chairmen (if any), council family directors, community directors, as well as all chief and adult counse-lors, must provide consent for a background check. Members serving in roles that require a back-ground check may fulfill this requirement by giving consent to the Knights of Columbus to obtain and pay for it on their behalf through its partner Praesidium. As shown, some roles also have access to Praesidium’s ARMATUS Administration dashboard to monitor member compliance within their coun-cil or jurisdiction. If members in certain roles are not compliant within thirty (30) days of notification, they are subject to removal from those roles. Members in these roles are required to renew their compliance with these requirements every three years.

Member Compliance With Diocesan Safe Environment Requirements

Our cooperative approach toward diocesan safe environment programs is expressed in our guidance to council leaders concerning member compliance with diocesan safe environment requirements. The first requirement of our safe environment program is for our members to be aware of, and compliant with, diocesan safe environment requirements applicable to members’ volunteer activities on parish property or off parish property when related to a diocese/parish ministry where minors are present. When members volunteer at an activity sponsored by a Knights of Columbus council on parish property they are not only volunteering for the Knights of Columbus, they are also serving as parish volunteers. In this regard, Knights of Columbus asks no more and no less than for its members to be treated just like any other parish volunteers. Just like any other parish volunteers, members volunteering on parish property or off parish property when related to a diocese/parish ministry where minors are present, must comply with all safe environment requirements applicable to parish volunteers in their diocese. It should be noted that simply being a member of the Knights of Columbus does not constitute volun-teer activity, as council business meetings are not a parish or church ministry. In other words, member-ship in the Knights of Columbus does not require volunteer activity on parish property. or off parish property when related to a diocese/parish ministry where minors are present. Conversely, members are not exempt from diocesan safe environment requirements applicable to parish volunteers by virtue of their being members. The table below shows how diocesan and Knights of Columbus safe environ-ment requirements generally relate to members of the Knights of Columbus:

Questions about member compliance with diocesan safe environment/youth protection requirements should be directed to the diocesan Office of Child and Youth Protection and may also be referred to the Knights of Columbus Office of Youth Protection at [email protected].

Building the Domestic Church A Seven Step Program – Into the Breach

Family Fully Alive Help families place God and the Catholic faith at the center of their lives. Using the Family Fully Alive Booklet as a devotional guide, this program provides monthly themes, reflections, meditations, and group projects. The Family Fully Alive monthly devotions are concrete ways that Knights of Columbus, in solidari-ty with Pope Francis, can support the growth of holy and loving families in the Church. The Family Fully Alive Program asks families to invite God into their homes and cultivates each family as a miniature do-mestic church. To this end, the program provides monthly themes, scripture verses and activities. Through prayer and reflection, each family has the opportunity to grow in holiness together. This is a flexible pro-gram that can be started at any time of the year and continues year-round. Councils will order physical booklets to distribute or direct parish families to program resources on kofc.org, all available at no cost. Consecration to the Holy Family Revitalize our parishes by urging our parish families to devote themselves to the ideal model of familial love set by Jesus, Mary and Joseph. Invite each family in your parish to consecrate themselves to the Holy Family. To help families live out the joy of Christ, Supreme Chaplain Archbishop William Lori has com-posed a prayer through which families will come together to consecrate themselves under the protection of the Holy Family. In this prayer, we ask for the aid or intercession of the perfect son Jesus Christ, Mary the perfect mother, and Joseph who is a model for every father. Councils will guide their parishes and community to understand and offer this prayer. Preparing for the Consecration to the Holy Family is not a single event. It is choosing a way of life for your family. Through this consecration, each participant is con-sciously choosing to be a beacon of God’s love through His Church. Father’s Day Affirmation of Wedding Vows The Knights of Columbus’ Domestic Church initiative seeks to integrate our members and their families more fully into the sacramental and social life of the parish. Our parish-based events and programs offer encouragement to families, who are called be “domestic churches” — assemblies of believers that togeth-er participate in the work of God. As a part of the Domestic Church initiative, each council should help plan a Renewal of Wedding Vows event. The renewal should take place on Father's Day, during or imme-diately following all Masses celebrated at the parish on that day. This event will give couples the oppor-tunity to bear witness to the Catholic understanding of marriage and the importance of marriage as the building block for strong families and parishes. Holy Family Prayer Program “The future of the world and of the Church passes through the family,” observed St. John Paul II, whom Pope Francis called “the Pope of the Family.” Recognizing the vital role of families in the world, the Knights of Columbus has dedicated its 17th Orderwide prayer program to the Holy Family, with the inten-tion of strengthening Catholic families and their prayer lives. The inauguration ceremony of the Holy Fami-ly Prayer Program was conducted August 4, 2015, at the 133rd Supreme Convention in Philadelphia, a few weeks before that city hosted the 8th World Meeting of Families, held for the first time in the United States. The ceremony was presided over by Archbishop Charles J. Chaput of Philadelphia. Archbishop Cha-put prayed, “Jesus, Mary and Joseph: as we Knights of Columbus carry your image throughout our com-munities, may your example, with the aid of the Holy Spirit, lead all families who look upon this image of you, to become homes of communion, of prayer and of love.”

5th Sunday Rosary Program To help bring parishioners together in a spiritual activity and promote devotion to Mary, the Knights of Columbus Supreme council is pleased to announce a new church activity, the 5th Sunday Rosary Program. Knights, their families and other parishioners are encouraged to pray the rosary as a corporate body every time a 5th Sunday occurs during a month. The 5th Sunday Rosary services will be conducted on Jul 31, Oct. 30, Jan 29, and April 30, during the 2016-2017 fraternal year. Finger rosaries that can be used during the program, are available from the Supreme Council and can be ordered by using the 5th Sunday Rosary Kit (SR-KIT). Participants may also use their own rosaries, and Knights are encouraged to use the rosaries that they received during their First Degree. Conducting this Church Activity every time a 5th Sunday occurs during a month as part of the 2016-2017 fraternal year will allow your council to list each one in the Church Activities section on the Columbian Award Application (#SP-7). In addition, it provides a visible “faith formation” program that will engage current members and their families, and offer parish families who are not yet part of the council an opportunity to experience the faith and fellowship that comes with being a member of the Knights of Columbus. Journey to the Inn In an increasingly secular world, many Catholics are faced with the difficulty of sharing the faith. With the bustle of Christmas shopping and the frequent removal of religious imagery from Christmas displays, it seems that communities have forgotten the incredible gift of Christ and the beauty of his birth. Facing similar concerns when first introducing Christ to the New World, Franciscan missionaries in the 16th century found that simple reenactments of the story of Christ’s birth could touch the hearts of those they encountered. The Spanish missionaries referred to these ceremonies as Las Posadas — meaning “the inns” or “the shelters” — as they gave emphasis to Mary and Joseph’s search for shelter before Our Sav-ior’s birth. These festivities have remained popular throughout Latin America and the southwestern Unit-ed States, yet children and adults from all cultural backgrounds can use similar celebrations to embrace the true meaning of the Christmas season and share the joy of Christ’s birth. Food For Families The Knights of Columbus is committed to ending hunger in local communities by asking local councils to participate in the Orderwide Food for Families Program. Food for Families ensures that families have adequate access to nutritious food. Although the economy may have improved in some areas, many families still need food assistance. In fact, some councils have seen families who previously donated to food pantries more recently come to the same pantries to receive donations. The program encourages council members and parishioners to contribute one can of nonperishable food per day for the duration of Lent. In addition, Tillamook (Ore.) Council 2171 planted a community vegetable garden that yielded more than 14,280 pounds of fresh food, a commodity that food pantries often lack. These projects — and hundreds more — have done wonders to keep food banks stocked and serviceable. As added incentive, the Order launched the Food for Families Reimbursement Program, which offers re-bates to councils that provide financial assistance to food banks and food pantries. For councils or assem-blies, the Supreme Council will refund $100 for every $500 donated, or for every 1,000 pounds of food that a council contributes to a parish food pantry, community food bank or soup kitchen - up to a maxi-mum of $500 per council/assembly per fraternal year. Reported contributions of food and/or monetary donations should be cumulative for the fraternal year and there is no need to send in a refund request every time a contribution is made. However, to be eligible for the rebate, the cumulative total of contribu-tions of food/money needs to reach a minimum of $500 or 1,000 pounds of food for councils or assem-blies.

LIFE ACTIVITIES

Marches for Life (Featured) – Councils are encouraged to participate or sponsor local, diocesan, state or national marches for life. Councils are required to organize a minimum of 25 marchers to partici-pate in a national, state or local March for Life or councils must themselves organize a March for Life to receive credit for this featured program.

When a state or local council raises 50% of the cost of an ultrasound machine, the Supreme Council will provide the other 50% of the cost to complete funding for purchase of an ultra-sound.

Christian Refugee Relief – Knights of Columbus are called to raise awareness of the plight of Middle East Christians through various parish based programs and fundraisers. Funds raised are sent to our Christian Refugee Relief Fund. Of particular focus is the resettling families in the town of Karamles, Iraq. We also encourage councils to utilize the Solidarity Crosses as a fundraiser and prayer campaign in their parishes.

Silver Rose – Eight silver roses now take various routes across the North American continent from Canada to Mexico. Every pilgrimage stop of the rose is an occasion for prayer and spiritual renewal centered on the rosary. The events share with participants the message of Our Lady of Guadalupe

Mass for People with Special Needs – Knights of Columbus Councils are encouraged to work with their pastor, as well as designated members of his staff, to organize an Annual Mass for people with developmental disabilities. It is an invaluable opportunity to welcome families who might not nor-mally feel comfortable coming to a regularly scheduled Mass. Furthermore, it will assist the parish in welcoming these families to any mass.

Pregnancy Center Support (Featured) - Many pregnancy centers try to help provide women and fam-ilies with the often-expensive necessities to care for a newborn child. After a Mass for Life or at any time of the year councils could promote a donation drive for diapers, wipes, clothes, furniture and other necessities, in addition to hosting a reception to raise money for their local pregnancy centers. Additionally, councils can “adopt” care centers to support as needs arise.

Novena for Life (Mandated) – The protection of life is a sustained prayer intention of the Church and our Knights of Columbus councils. A council can promote 9 days of prayer for a culture of life both in the parish and in our homes. These novenas could proceed or end with major feast days or pro-life events.

Program Reporting to Supreme

Each time a council completes one of the Faith in Action programs previously listed, a Fraternal Programs Re-port Form (Form 10784) should be completed and submitted to Supreme and copied to the State Program Di-rector at [email protected]. At this time, the submission of the Form 10784 is not required for the Columbian Award, State Deputy’s Award for Excellence, or the Outstanding Council Award however it may become a requirement in the future and councils are encouraged to become familiar with submitting the forms after completing the Faith in Action programs.

State Deputy’s Award of Excellence

We believe that “Every Council” should and will be able to achieve the State Deputy’s Award of Excellence this fraternal year.

Your council can earn the State Deputy’s Award for Excellence

by participating, reporting and recruiting new members via the

monthly reporting form. Each council must achieve the required number of

activities and submit all required forms before March 1st, 2021.

The following pages will detail exactly what each Council needs to accomplish to receive the prestigious

“State Deputies Award of Excellence”.

Faith in Action reporting Examples:

Spiritual Reflection Program: The definition of a “reflection” is broad but

should be a day-long event at minimum and could possibly encompass an entire weekend.

Councils can attend religious retreats and days of reflection organized by other groups. However, if they are attending a reflection and not planning it themselves, council attendance should be signifi-cant with at least 10 percent of the council or a minimum of 10 members participating.

Reflections and retreats can be held at the council level but councils could also collaborate with oth-er councils in the area to host a Spiritual Reflec-tion.

If planning a retreat for the council, consider hold-ing it on church property and have volunteers pack lunch or provide their own meals to defer costs.

Be creative! Make a pilgrimage to a nearby basili-ca, monastery or convent. Celebrate Mass with the religious or your chaplain/pastor.

It is strongly encouraged that councils incorpo-rate Mass within their program, celebrating the liturgy with your chaplain/pastor. Also, incorpo-rate opportunities for other sacramental and li-turgical activities such confession, Eucharistic adoration, a rosary or all of these.

Consecration to the Holy Family: Set a date for the consecration and announce it to

your parish a month before the official day. The traditional recommendation is the first Sunday after Christmas.

Asking your pastor to make an announcement at all Sunday Masses the week before the consecra-tion. Ask him to explain what a consecration is, why it is being undertaken, and how to properly prepare.

Suggesting that each family pray together each day for the week before the consecration. Ideally, this will lead them to continue the practice, at least on a weekly basis, after the consecration has occurred.

Encouraging each family to intentionally fast from something ahead of the consecration. This fast should last at least a week leading up to the con-secration. It is strongly encouraged to fast from something that would normally be consumed or an activity that is regularly done. Fasting helps to discipline our minds and hearts and moves us to be more focused on God.

Here are some ideas that you can use for your SP-7 to complete the mandatory programs: Strongly encouraging each member of all parish

families to go to confession before the consecra-tion. Hosting an event in the middle of the week prior to the Sunday consecration. One idea for this event is to invite a guest speaker to discuss the importance of consecrating oneself to the Holy Family, the model of the Holy Family, the meaning and impact of consecrations, or related themes. Be sure to set aside time at your event for prayer in community. Consider praying the rosary together and be sure to recite the conse-cration prayer together in preparation.

Helping Hands: As a council, generate program ideas that would

benefit those less fortunate in the community. Efforts could include:

As a parish, cook and/or serve food at no charge at a local soup kitchen or parish hall. (This could be a good family activity.)

As a council, assist in cleaning and repairing the facilities of a local nonprofit organization (i.e., fixing broken tables, painting walls).

Hold classes to teach trade skills (electrical, plumbing, carpentry, etc.).

Organize collection drives for specific supplies such as blankets, backpacks, toiletries, and cloth-ing. Raise money for a local soup kitchen, home-less shelter or other nonprofit organization through various events. Money could go toward the purchase of specific supplies and appliances, such as a new large freezer or dishwasher, or it could be donated in bulk.

Novena for Life: Set a date for the novena. Traditionally this takes

place in January. Consider incorporating it as part of the council’s participation in a 40 Days for Life campaign or schedule it to precede a major feast day or pro-life event.

Anchor the beginning and end of the nine days with public church services like a Mass or rosary

Consider organizing a social activity during the novena for the parish to come together and cele-brate life

Involve members of many parish organizations, especially the parish school and religious educa-tion leaders, in promoting and participating in the novena and services

Invite members of local culture of life groups to join in your novena and services

Outstanding Council Contest

Every Council is already an “Outstanding Council”

We want to recognize the “best of the best” with our “Outstanding Council” contest. The “Outstanding Council” contest is an activity-based contest that will recognize the top council in each membership division at the State Convention on April 16-18, 2021 in Minot. Every council has the chance to be the “Top council” in their division as the ac-tivities are all tracked from the monthly reporting form that you must complete and send in. Councils must win the State Deputy’s Award for Excellence out-lined earlier to be eligible for the Outstanding Council in their membership divi-sion.

GRAND KNIGHTS & PROGRAM CHAIRMEN: “Your Council could be the “Outstanding Council”

Just complete and submit the “Monthly Reporting” form to the State Program Director each and every month and you

could have the “Outstanding Council” in your division.

THE TOP COUNCIL IN EACH MEMBERSHIP DIVISION WILL BE RECOGNIZED AT THE

STATE CONVENTION

Monthly Reporting

Every Council is asked to report to the State Program Director the activities completed by their council each month.

We now have a very “simple and efficient” monthly reporting form that should only take a few minutes per month to complete. The “Monthly Reporting” form can be submitted to the State Program Director by completing the form on the state website link below;

www.nd-kofc.org/monthly-report

Faith in Action Program Director Kevin Cowles email: [email protected]

The “Monthly Report” form is important as it is used by the State Program Director to record and

document the various programs and activities completed by your council during the previous

month. The quantity and quality of these monthly reports and the council activities are a significant part

of the criteria used to determine the “State Deputy Award for Excellence” and “Outstanding Council” in

each membership division.

Faith Activities Marian Icon Prayer & Rosary Program

As Knights of Columbus, we should see our membership in the Order as our opportunity to grow closer to Christ. We do this by our good works, and also through prayer. Brother Knights: the core of Church Activities in our North Dakota Knights of Columbus is our devo-tion to praying together. The Supreme Knights of Columbus prescribes that we use Marian Devotion as the center-piece of our prayer. At our Admissions Degree, we are presented with a Blessed Rosary, in-structed to carry it with us, and recite the Rosary Prayer often. This is a Marian Devotion building block. Our North Dakota Councils are involved in the year-round, in-state movement of the Holy Mother Mary portrait and the accompanying special prayer opportunity. We are encouraged to conduct special Council and Parish events where collective prayer and vener-ation of the Holy Mother. Two other 365 days a year Knights of Columbus prayer priorities include the Perpetual Ro-sary for Respect of Life and the Perpetual Rosary for Vocations. Follow the schedule pub-lished in the Program Book and see to it your council is making sure that Council, Parish, or group rosaries are said on days your Council is assigned to play its part. We need this Rosary recitation to occur every day of the year. Also, we will be calling Councils’ attention to the “Building the Domestic Church” campaign currently emphasized by Knights of Columbus Supreme. There are a dozen specific activities – some new, some familiar – from which a Council can select and engage, helping advance The Domestic Church effort. This list of Domestic Church activities may be viewed on the Su-preme website, where explanations of the activities are provided (go to www.kofc.org, enter Domestic Church in search panel). Councils are reminded that, for Columbia Award consider-ation, 4 of a Council’s major program activities entered on the Award application must be designated as “Building the Domestic Church” activities. 2020-2021 Schedule Perpetual Rosary for Vocations

Each Council is asked to pray the PERPETUAL ROSARY FOR VOCATIONS on the assigned days for your council. All District Deputies are asked to make sure each council knows when it is their turn to pray the rosary. This is very important for if you miss your day the Perpetual Rosary is not perpetual.

RSVP Refund Support Vocations Program

Thank you to all the councils, assemblies, the State Council and the Foundation for your prayers and generous donations to RSVP this past year and in the year to come. Between the Bismarck and Fargo Diocese we are blessed to have more than 37 men in for-mation for the priesthood and several women entering the religious life in North Dakota. These men and women need our support to help further their vocations. First and most im-portantly these men and women need our prayers as they discern God’s plan for them. In addition to our prayers they need our financial assistance. These men have many expens-es that go beyond just tuition & books. I ask that you consider financially sup-porting one or more of the seminarians or women entering religious life in North Dakota through RSVP. I would ask, too, that you consider making RSVP a standard item in your budget as we all reap the benefits from assisting these men and women in fulfilling their vocations. For every $500 your council gives to a seminarian, Supreme will refund $100 back to your council. They will refund a council up to $400 per seminarian. However, if you are not able to donate $500, a gift of any size is appreciated by our seminarians and should be reported to the state RSVP chairman. Updated lists of the seminarians will be made available on the State website as they are re-ceived from each diocese. If you need assistance in choosing recipients, please call Fr. Kyle Metzger of the Fargo Diocese (701- 356-7957) or Fr. Jordan Dosch of the Bismarck Diocese (701- 471-5758). You may also contact me with any questions at [email protected] or 701-260-1983. When an RSVP has been made, a copy of form 2863 or a copy of the RSVP form included in the state program book should be sent to me. Food for Families The Knights of Columbus

Food for Families Reimbursement Program

Food for Families Reimbursement Program can best be explained as neighbors helping neighbors or families helping families. The program allows our councils to provide a helping hand to the less fortunate in our communities by donating money or food to a local community food bank or the parish food pantry. Let’s do our best to help those that are in need but may not want to ask for help by participating in the program. The Knights of Columbus Food for Families Reimbursement Program was established in 2012. Under this program, local Knights of Columbus councils or assemblies make an annual contribution of $500 or more, or 1,000 pounds of food to a local community food bank or the parish food pantry. For every $500 or 1,000 pounds of food contributed, the council or assembly is eligible for a refund of $100 from the Supreme Council. The maximum refund a council or assembly can receive is $500 per fraternal year. For Columbian Squires circles, the minimum donation is $100, or 100 pounds of food, with each circle eligible to receive from the Supreme Council a refund of $20 for each $100 donated or 100 pounds of food. Reimbursement must be applied for in the fraternal year during which contributions were made. As resources permit, councils, assemblies and circles may provide support to multiple food banks and/or food pantries. The minimum contribution to qualify for a refund is $500 ($100 for Squires circles) for each food bank/food pantry supported. In addition to a refund for financial contributions, councils, assemblies and circles are also eligible to receive a Food for Families plaque (and, in successive years, date plates signifying years of participation) in recognition of manpower support provided to food banks and food pantries. When you participate in this program, remember to fill out the report form that is due by June 30th. The report Form #10057 can be found on the Supreme Knights of Columbus website at kofc.org. Community Activities / Shamrocks

Knights throughout North Dakota have been involved in Father Elwood E. Cassedy’s dream of a home for troubled teens, a home that gives them a new chance at life and the reasons to make it successful. Each year dedicated Councils raise much needed funds to continue the good works at “Home on the Range.” “Thank you,” to those Councils that participate in this worthy cause each year and a special “Thanks,” to those that tried for the first time or returned to the effort last year. If your Council has not participated, please consider taking part this year and share in the feel-ing of doing something great with a little time and effort. Please inquire or order through the Community Activities Co-Chair - Mike Matejcek using the contact information shown below. We will have them available at State meetings, where you or a District Deputy may be able to pick them up for you or you may arrange to have them picked up at a different time if possible. State officers or officials have been able to deliver at times, but this is not always a convenient option, so please plan ahead to avoid expensive delivery options. Father Cassidy Award This award will be given to each Council that achieves at least a $3.00 Per Capita donation. To get credit for this award, all funds must be turned in and recorded by April 1, 2021. Sham-rock funds must be submitted to our Worthy State Treasurer, Mike Bannach at the address given at the bottom of this page. All awards for the Shamrocks program will be given to the winning councils directly from HOTR this year. Shamrock Talk

Good (Morning/Evening) My name is _________ ___________, I am

a member of the Knights of Columbus (Council #__________) of this

parish and I would like to tell you about our Shamrock program. This

has been one of our ND State Council’s worthy charities for over 40

years, with the proceeds going to the support of “Home on the

Range,” in Sentinel Butte, ND. This is a home, started by Father El-

wood E. Cassedy, for troubled teens that have been disadvantaged in

life, some with stories of trouble, neglect, and abuse we can only im-

agine. These young men and women need another chance at life

and the reasons to make it a success. The teachings and values of our

Catholic religion are used as a binding element with the traditions

many of us grew up with. Prayer, daily chapel service, education, a

sense of personal responsibility, a renewed self-esteem, and every-

day hard work involved in running a ranch are part of what makes it

work. This being a working ranch, with these teens being the first pri-

ority, you can understand why they still need the financial help we

can give. This help will make sure the experience continues to

change lives and make a difference in our world.

Yes, Home on the Range needs your prayers too, but your generous

financial help is also needed to keep this dream alive and continue in

its great success. Please make a donation and wear the Shamrock with

Catholic pride. My brother Knights will be at the doors with Sham-

rocks if you wish to make a free will donation. On

behalf of the teens at Home on the Range, I Thank You!

Community Activities / Tootsie Rolls

The first oath of our fraternal order is “CHARITY!” The Tootsie Roll program is designed to help us life up to this promise. Father Michael J. McGivney’s dream in founding the Knights of Columbus included assisting the disadvantaged. Through “Special Olympics,” his dream is realized, individuals with a desire to compete and excel in special skills will benefit while we, as Knights, support this worthy cause. If every Council in our state would try at least one case of Tootsie Rolls at their activities or events, generous patrons would have the chance to contribute in a “Free Will” offering to support those special individuals with their own dream of success and accomplishment. These individuals prove their own dedication and will, we can only try to match their enthu-siasm. Please do what Knights do and contribute a little of your time and effort, so you too, can make a difference. We hope to encourage you and your Council to help grow this program and increase our support of the “Special Olympics.” Tootsie Rolls will be available throughout the year and can be distributed at state meetings, please order ahead and arrange for someone to pick them up. State officers and officials have often delivered the Tootsie Rolls, but planning is important. Tootsie Rolls must be ordered through a Council and will be billed at the current rate of $20.00 per case, but as always, price is subject to change by the vendor. Our hope is that each Tootsie Roll case will provide funds for the intended purpose, so please remember to be generous if you use them as treats or a Council giveaway. Tootsie Roll signs are available by email request and can be printed and laminated by you to prolong their usable life. Councils will be recognized at the 2021 State Convention for their success in this program, but all payments and funds must be turned in and recorded by April 1, 2021. Tootsie Roll funds must be submitted to your Worthy State Treasurer, Mike Bannach at the address given at the bottom of this page. To order Tootsie Rolls please visit the state website at www.nd-kofc.org and go to the Tootsie Roll tab. You will be able to enter your order for how many cases you need. The State Council will then send you a bill for them. The State Community Chair will contact you on getting you your Tootsie Rolls.

Knights of Columbus Youth Athletic Competitions

We are excited to introduce a new youth athletic activity for the coming fraternal year, the Knights of Columbus Hockey Challenge. Very similar to the Soccer Challenge we have been doing the last several years, the Hockey Challenge gives youth a chance to demonstrate their puck shooting skill at a modified hockey goal to score points. The Hockey Challenge can be done on an ice rink, in a gymnasium, or a concrete floor so there a lot of options. For con-sistency this first year, it is recommended to use regular hockey pucks on a cement or syn-thetic floor for all competition levels. We will continue the Free Throw Competition and Soccer Challenge as well this year. All Grand Knights and District Deputies should have the official guidelines and playbooks for the Soccer Challenge, Hockey Challenge, and Free Throw Competition in their possession. These booklets lay out the program, regulations, and rules for each of the competitions. These booklets also detail the eligibility and age criteria for the contestants. Note that there is no requirement to belong to the Knights of Columbus or for a contestant to be a member of a Catholic parish. These booklets as well as all the entry forms, promotional posters, and certificate forms are included in the kits. Councils should order their Soccer Challenge, Hockey Challenge, and Free Throw Competition kits from Supreme by the end of August 2020. Kits can be ordered directly from Supreme by calling 1-203-752-4270 or the Supreme website www.kofc.org. District Deputies and Grand Knights of each District should get together and discuss these programs as soon as possible in the coming fraternal year. Those councils that do not have soccer or hockey in their area could work with the DD’s and split the cost of buying soccer balls or hockey pucks among the councils in the area as well as the cost to build a goal. Splitting the cost and the usage among the councils of the area and it makes it very afforda-ble for all councils to participate in these events. If you are in an area that has soccer and/or hockey teams in schools as well as park board teams, talk with your local Schools or Park Dis-tricts to secure soccer fields, ice rinks, or gymnasium space and equipment to use. Most will be more than glad to help you. All it takes is a visit or telephone call to make this happen. This is a great opportunity for our community youngsters to take part in one or more of these athletic competitions. It also gives the Knights of Columbus a great opportunity to re-cruit new members at no cost! If you have questions or problems with implementing any of these programs, please feel free to call me. The Knights of Columbus partnering with Special Olympics is a real testament to the charitable giving of KC members nationwide. Since charity is the first principle of our order, knights throughout the state, are being a shining example of that principle. Your continued support of this program is important as it relies solely on organizations like Knights of Columbus to function. When setting up your council programs for the new fraternal year, remember to include a fundraiser for Special Olympics. A reminder to all councils that the Special Olympics Form 4584 is due January 1, 2021. FATHER MICHAEL J. MCGIVNEY GUILD

The Father McGivney Guild was established in 1997 to gather and dis-seminate information on the life and legacy of Father Michael J. McGivney, the founder of the Knights of Columbus in 1882. On March 15, 2008, the Vatican announced that the cause of Father Michael J. McGivney had taken a significant step forward in the canon-ization process. Pope Benedict XVI approved a decree in recognizance of this exemplary priest which advanced the cause of sainthood and the distinction of being called a “Venerable Servant of God”. The cause has now entered a new and exciting phase. On May 27, 2020, the Vatican announced that Pope Francis approved the promul-gation of a decree recognizing a miracle attributed to the intercession

of the founder of the Knights of Columbus, Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney. The pope’s ac-tion means that Father McGivney can be declared “Blessed,” the step just prior to sainthood. An additional miracle attributed to Father McGivney’s intercession will be required for his canoniza-tion as a saint. Membership in the Guild is free and open to anyone who is devoted to Father McGivney and wish-es to invoke his intercession and assist in his sainthood cause through prayer. Knights of Columbus members are not automatically members, as they must elect to do so. We are all invited to be-come members of the Guild and participate in promoting devotion to this “Servant of God”. Mem-bership in the Guild has many benefits. All Guild members are enrolled in a weekly mass, receive a bimonthly newsletter, except July and August, with periodic updates on the progress of the cause for canonization. I would ask each District Deputy and Grand Knight when attending an exemplification to ensure that each member present is a member of the Guild and if not, present them as well as any new member with the registration paperwork to sign on at this time. Joining is easy. Just send me your name (and your wife’s) and address to my mailing address or email address as noted below. In addition, you can call me at 701-775-5918 and I will take care of this for you. If you prefer to register and join electronically, go to www.fathermcgivney.org and then click on “Join the Guild.” and fill in your name and address. If you need any further infor-mation, please call me. McGivney Guild Chairman Larry Lewandowski 1108 South 12th St Grand Forks, ND 58201 218-791-2899 c [email protected]

NORTH DAKOTA KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS FOUNDATION The Knights of Columbus Foundation was created for the purpose of providing financial assistance for reli-gious, educational and charitable programs of the Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus in North Dakota. Today that same mission holds true and is quite evident in the manner in which we continue to make use of the Foundation earnings. To date your Foundation has provided $257,300 in scholarships to those in religious formation. Additionally, $2,000 was donated to the St. Bernard Mission School in Fort Yates in the name of Fr. Jacob Schumacher. We have only been able to do this because of the generosity of so many Brother Knights and their families, as well as the State Council, local Councils, Assemblies, and others from throughout our state. The North Dakota State Council continues to play an important role in helping build the investment portfolio of the Foundation in many ways. Their continued commitment of having the Foundation share in the annual raffle proceeds, Christopher Fund, support of the Foundation Convention Auction and the annual Foundation Golf Scramble are most appreciated. Also, their help in growing the Foundation by awarding points for the Outstand Council Contest to councils that provide financial support to the Foun-dation is another sign of their belief in what an important role the Foundation can play in growing Colum-bianism here in our state. On behalf of the Foundation Board of Directors, I ask that all our councils take lead in what the State Council is doing for your Foundation by supporting the many functions they sponsor and promote that help grow the Foundation. Every council can do this by: Holding a fundraiser with proceeds going in support of the Foundation, thus earning points for the Out-standing Council Contest. Support the State Councils Annual Raffle by selling tickets and earning money not only for the State Coun-cil and the Foundation, but also your council. Taking part in the annual Foundation Golf Scramble by sponsoring a hole and/or a team or simply encour-age your council members to participate. Support the annual Convention Auction by providing items to be bid on. Promoting use of the Foundation’s Death Memorial and Christmas Cards. Promoting the purchasing of a life insurance policy designating the Foundation as the owner or assigning either all or a portion of an existing policy or annuity to the Foundation as a beneficiary. Please consider incorporating these suggestions and include them in your councils plan for the upcoming fraternal year. If you have any questions or concerns about the Foundation, please contact any Founda-tion Board Member. The current board members are:

Mike Steiner, Fargo, State Deputy Dr. Steve Kourajian, Harvey Brian Kingsley, Fargo, President Joel Herman, Harwood Brian Dukart, Dickinson, Vice President Pete Deichert, Mandan Dr. Cory Badinger, Fargo, Treasurer Mike Bannach, Fargo, Secretary Duane Zwinger, Fargo

Knights on Bikes

The Knights on Bikes began in Texas in 2005 and was formed to witness to our faith as Knights of Columbus Catholic motorcyclists. Our mottos, “In God We Trust and Ride,” “In Service to One, In Service to All,” and “Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism” reflect our mission of evangelization to the Catholic Community. With representatives in almost all 50 states, Canada, and worldwide, Knights on Bikes continues to grow! The North Dakota Chapter of Knights on Bikes began in Watford City in 2018 during a Knights of Columbus council meeting. To be a member of Knights on Bikes, you must be a Knight of Columbus in good standing. Knights on Bikes come from many different Knights of Columbus Councils and Fourth Degree Assemblies across the state of North Dakota. What began with twelve members in 2018 has grown to twenty-two members statewide. A Knights on Bikes North Dakota statewide ride to benefit the ND Home on the Range and the Right to Life Stork Bus is planned and scheduled for August 1st and 2nd 2020. Knights on Bikes is asking from now until the ride that all ND Knights of Columbus Councils step up and do our duty as KofC members and collect donations while performing acts of kindness and love (IE pancake breakfasts, collection baskets) to help with this cause. This is all about the children and helping their future. For those of you who are avid riders, want to join like-minded motorcycle enthusiasts, and who seek the fraternity and brotherhood that comes from being a Knight of Columbus, per-haps it’s time to take the next step to Knights on Bikes. Remember, we are Catholics first, Knights of Columbus second, and Knights on Bikes third. Join Us! Vivat-Jesus! Ryan D.
