Global Women was established in 2009 with a commitment to support and encourage those women who are already making an exceptional contribution to the New Zealand economy; to create a pipeline of “next generation” women leaders who can through their competence and readiness further expand the contribution and numbers of women at the top levels of governance, management and entrepreneurship; and to bring the economic, productivity and market responsiveness benefits the NZ economy that gender balance brings. Global Women is seen as a catalyst to transforming NZ Inc. and a change agent for women leaders.

At the heart of the organisation is a commitment to excellence and a high caliber membership of senior leaders and investment partners. Membership has grown quickly from 75 to 200 of the most influential women leaders in New Zealand, 20 per cent of whom are operating globally. Global Women has matured to represent a broad cross section

of leaders - from the private to public sector, corporate to not-for-profit, small business to entrepreneurs, and rural to international.

You join 200 outstanding women leaders, all of whom have demonstrated repeated leadership success in their professional and personal lives. Your diverse perspectives and active participation will contribute significantly to the future of Global Women and NZ Inc.

Rt Hon Dame Jenny ShipleyChair, Global Women

Global Women provides me with personal andprofessional support from a group of women who have shared interests andexperiences, and who are arguably at the top of their game. In a word: inspiring!

Benefits of your membership

Membership to New Zealand’s premier women’s organisation is by invitation only, and provides professional and personal benefits that include:

• Joining a powerful network of women leaders who represent the full spectrum of industry, business and organisation.

• Regular membership dinners to deepen peer-to-peer relationships and provoke thought and exchange of views and opinions.

• An annual Member’s Retreat held in May, where national and international members learn, share, support and explore how to continue to have an impact on the future.

• Regular opportunities to hear visiting expert speakers.

• Access to events throughout the country that allow members and their guests to network and interact. These events are excellent opportunities for GW investment partners to host global speakers and for GW members to share expertise or access to peers in their global network.

• An annual international delegation of members to an agreed country of interest, with a relevant programme that is strategically focused to enable deeper understanding, the establishment of networks and connections, and potential business opportunities. Previous member delegations have been to India, China and the USA.

• Knowledge resource – links to articles, research, blogs and discussion points of interest.

• The Global Women executive office that facilitates and supports membership.

Member events

Dinners

Dinners (held regularly in Auckland,Wellington and Christchurch) are a greatopportunity for Global Women members toconnect and to strengthen relationshipswith peers.

Development sessions

Global Women are planning to host three expert learning and development sessions. The preliminary topics for these sessions are Digital, Design Thinking and Executive Presence. The sessions will provide a platform for members to hear and engage in poignant topics through a diversity lens.

Annual retreat

Held over two nights, this is the cornerstoneevent of the Global Women calendar, alwayswith a fantastic line up of speakers. It is an unparalleled time to connect, re-energise and deepen relationships with Global Women peers.

I find the quality of Global Women events excellent - they are consistently thought provoking and inspiring... It refreshes me with enthusiasm and gives me a broader perspective.

BreakThrough Leaders Programme

The intensive world-class initiative, BreakThrough Leaders Programme (BTLP) has produced 80 graduates since it’s inception in 2010. This programme provides high level mentoring from Global Women members and targeted professional learning to increase the potential of women progressing to executive leadership and governance roles. The success of this initiative is its access to a wide range of professional facilitators and to Global Women members, as they share their expertise and their career pathway successes and failures with total honesty and insight. Activation programme

Leveraging feedback from our four Activation Series programmes as well as the learnings from BTLP, Global Women have confirmed a four-part Activation programme aimed at middle managers. The final programme will be released at the end of February 2015 and it is likely that the modules will cover relevant topics such as Strategic/Design Thinking, Mindfulness, Self Management and Mastery and Executive presence.

Diversity & inclusion

Driven by Global Women, DiverseNZ is a major initiative and collaboration formed around a single question: How can we build our ability to manage diversity and inclusion – in our workforce, customers, partners, and investors, nationally and internationally – to create a distinctive source of value for our companies, and for New Zealand? DiverseNZ initially worked with 40 leading NZ businesses over a two year period to share successful tools and frameworks which help companies at different stages to understand and work with difference and to innovate new approaches to meet NewZealand’s unique diversity challenges. In 2015 Global Women will elevate the initiative to another level with a clear role in the diversity and business eco-system, continuing to create a distinctive source of value for our large organisaitons, private and public, and for New Zealand.

Global Women has provided a network and support system for me in which I can upskill and learn; structured avenues to help uplift young leadership; and an awareness of diversity and gender issues.

Nomination and application process

Following a review of our current nomination process, the Membership Committee and Board identified a number of opportunities for improvement in the current nomination and application process. We have developed a new process that will deliver a better experience for both members and potential candidates, and improve the quality and sustainability of our group.

Invitation only: With the sponsoring member taking a key role in managing the process.

Transparency: Clear process and criteria used to make membership decisions, with the new nomination form to support this.

Consistency: The nomination form and a peer review process by the membership committee will be used for all nominations.

Accountability: Members who nominate a candidate support them through the process. This includes confirming their interest and commitment, completing the nomination forms fully and induction of the new member.

Strategy Led: Targeted on priority sectors to maintain membership quality and support greater membership diversity. Priority sectors identified include Maori, Pacifica, Asian and Entrepreneurial leaders.

Engagement: An engaged approach between the potential member and sponsoring member throughout the entire process.
