Dear Porsche Club Presidents,Dear Porsche Club members,

When we look back on 2009, it is fair tosay that it was a very eventful year for allPorsche enthusiasts. A year that broughtmany changes and new developmentsfor Porsche. This not only means thatPorsche – on its way to being an inte-grated corporation with Volkswagen – willalways remain Porsche, but also that itwill emphasize its chosen path with an im-pressive range of new models. Despitedifficult economic times, the launch of thenew Porsche Panamera proved a globalsuccess. Not only did the fourth Porscheseries receive great praise from the inter-national automotive press, but it also ap-pealed to a very specific target group:customers who had been searching for athoroughbred sports car with four doors, four full-size seats and a spacious inte-rior, but had so far failed in their efforts.By the middle of December 2009,Porsche Leipzig GmbH had receivedmore than 9000 orders for the PorschePanamera, which has thus successfullyclaimed its own market segment.Porsche Club Coordination is very muchlooking forward to welcoming the new“family member” at the Porsche Clubsand numerous Porsche Club events in thecoming years.

2010 is set to be another very excitingyear, with many highlights featured on theinternational Porsche Club events calen-dar. By way of example, we would like todraw your attention to the internationalPorsche 356 Meeting. At this event, which will take place at the Porsche plant

in Leipzig between the 13th and 16th ofMay, fans of the classic Porsche 356sports car will be able to enjoy a variedand attractive support programme in ad-dition to driving activities on the Porscherace track. Shortly thereafter, PorscheClub members from all over the globe willbe invited to the European cultural me-tropolis of Vienna for the spectacularPorsche Europe Parade, to be held be-tween the 3rd and 6th of June. We arelooking forward to the presentation ofparticipating vehicles at the Concoursd’Elégance in Vienna’s Prater Park, anexcursion into the enchanting WachauValley and, of course, the “PorscheNight” in the orangery of SchönbrunnPalace. The response to the event hasbeen magnificent – with 350 teams and700 guests, this will be the biggestPorsche Europe Parade so far.

However, passion for the Porsche brandreaches far beyond the borders of Eu-rope, a fact that is proven by the manythousands of large and small events to beheld throughout the world. In the USA, forexample, some 800 Porsche sportscars, representing all models and genera-tions, are expected to arrive in St.Charles, Illinois, between the 3rd and 9thof July. The Porsche Clubs in Japan andSouth Africa will also be repeating theirmajor parades. The active enthusiasmshown by our customers is not some-thing we take for granted and it neverceases to amaze us. On behalf of the en-tire Porsche AG, and in anticipation of the

exciting calendar ahead, the PorscheClub Coordination team would like to takethis opportunity to thank you sincerely, the organisers and participants, for yourgreat voluntary commitment and yourmany years of loyalty to the Porschebrand.

Following the arrival of Claudia Schäffner(as reported in issue 5/09), who is look-ing after the Porsche Clubs in Europe, theMiddle East and South Africa, we hope tobe able to attend as many events as pos-sible in order to express our personalthanks and offer our active support.

We will of course publish full reports ofthe most important events in subsequentissues of Porsche Club News.

In closing, we would like to announce anew feature of Porsche Club News.

Starting in this issue, you will find regularcontributions on the facts, figures andpersonalities of our company, which havepreviously remained relatively unknownbut will be of particular interest to you asPorsche enthusiasts.

We are looking forward to continuing ourcooperation with you!

full approval for road use, thus answer-ing the cries of Porsche customers theworld over. The car has been launched inFebruary 2010, joining the Boxster andBoxster S as the third model in the series.

At first glance, the new member of theBoxster family clearly distinguishes it-self from its siblings. This is becausethe Boxster Spyder was developed firstand foremost for open-top driving – thelow-slung, light soft top extends farback, merely offering the driver andpassenger protection from wind andsun. The closed roof, in conjunctionwith the lower side windows and thetwo striking bulges on the single-piecerear flap, lends the Boxster Spyder a

Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG is launchinga new top model in the Porsche Boxsterseries. The Boxster Spyder, the lightestmodel in the Porsche range at just1275 kg, was making its world debut atthe Los Angeles Motor Show in Decem-ber. The fact that this new mid-engineroadster represents the true, puristicform of the Porsche sports car is clearto see – light, powerful, consistentlyopen and highly efficient. This is pre-cisely the formula used in the creationof Porsche’s most successful road-go-ing sports and racing cars, rangingfrom the legendary 550 Spyder to thecurrent motorsport success that is theRS Spyder. The Boxster Spyder nowcontinues this clear-cut philosophy with

stretched and sleek silhouette reminis-cent of the Carrera GT. The combina-tion of significantly less weight than theBoxster S, a lower centre of gravity andall-new sports suspension ensures thatthe Boxster Spyder delivers on the roadwhat it promises in appearance.

In front of the rear axle of the BoxsterSpyder is a 3.4 litre six-cylinder enginewith direct fuel injection, which pro-duces 320 HP – ten more than in theBoxster S. Equipped with the PorscheDoppelkupplung (PDK) and SportChrono Package, the new car’s LaunchControl function ensures accelerationfrom 0 to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds. With the optional PDK, fuel consump-

tion is a mere 9.3 litres per 100 kilome-tres in the New European Driving Cycle(NEDC). Maximum speed is 267 km/h –with the top down.

In terms of its basic concept, the entireBoxster family acts as a successor tothe legendary 550 Spyder from 1953,with both models sharing the same mid-engine roadster concept, low weight,back-to-the-roots lifestyle and supremeagility combined with outstanding driv-ing pleasure. The two-seater was thefirst sports car from Stuttgart-Zuffen-hausen to be developed specifically forracing, but it was still also approved forroad use. In the years following its pro-duction, the lightweight 550 kg Spyderscored numerous victories on race cir-cuits and in the road races so popularat the time. The type 550 was followedby other extremely successful PorscheSpyders such as the 718 RS 60 in1960. In homage to these legendary

racing cars, Porsche released a limitededition Boxster model bearing the Spy-der name in 2004 and 2008. By con-trast, the new Boxster Spyder is a regu-lar, specially developed and upgradedproduction model with far-reachingmodifications over the Boxster andBoxster S.

The global market launch of thePorsche Boxster Spyder began in Feb-

ruary 2010, with a base price of53,100 euro. The German marketprice, including 19 percent VAT andcountry-specific equipment, is 63,404euro.

New light-weight battery option for Porsche 911 GT3, 911 GT3 RS and Boxster Spyder

Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG is the first carmaker in the world to offer a starter bat-tery in lithium-ion technology. Weighingless than 6 kg or 13 lb, the new batteryis more than 10 kg or 22 lb lighter than aconventional 60 Ah lead battery.

The new lithium-ion battery will be avail-able as of January 2010 for the 911GT3, 911 GT 3 RS, and Boxster Spyderas an option delivered with the car, sell-ing at a price in the German market ofEuro 1,904 including 19 per cent value-added tax.

The battery is delivered as a separateunit together with the car and may sub-sequently be fitted as an alternative tothe regular, conventional starter battery. The cars are delivered with both batter-ies, therefore they are ready for usethroughout the whole year. Since, whilethe lightweight battery offers a very highstandard of everyday driving qualities, its starting capacity is limited at temper-atures below 0o C or 32o F due to itsspecific features.

The primary reason for developing and in-troducing the new battery was its lowerweight. In sports cars built consistently forsuperior driving dynamics such as the twoversions of the 911 GT3 and the BoxsterSpyder, less weight naturally means evengreater agility and driving dynamics.

In its length and width the lithium-ion bat-tery comes in the same dimensions as theregular battery, but is approximately 70millimetres or 2.8’’ lower. The fasteningpoints, electrical connections and volt-age range are fully compatible with therespective models, allowing simple andquick replacement of the standard leadbattery by the lightweight unit, for exam-ple when racing on the track.

With its nominal capacity of 18 Ah, thelithium-ion battery, through its specificfeatures, offers a level of practical out-put and performance not only compara-ble to that of a 60 Ah lead battery, butrather even better in many cases.

On a conventional car battery only about30 per cent of the total capacity is actu-ally available for practical use due to theconfiguration of the system, while thisrestriction does not apply to the lithium-ion battery. On the contrary, through itscharacteristic structure – and, in particu-lar, the independence of the chemicalcomposition of the electrolytes from thecharge status – a lithium-ion battery con-sistently offers almost 100 per cent ofits capacity.

Delivery of power by the lithium-ion bat-tery throughout its useful charge rangeis likewise significantly better, providingits full power, for example, when startingthe engine almost independently of thecurrent charge level.

After the engine has started, the newPorsche battery shows further benefitsin the charge process, being ablethrough its smaller internal resistance totake up more power than a conventionalbattery and thus re-charge more quickly.Yet a further benefit is that a lithium-ionbattery allows a significantly greaternumber of charging and discharging cy-

cles, plus the two further advantagesthat the self-discharging effect is lowerand the service life of the battery longer. The lithium-ion battery being introducedby Porsche as the pioneer in this area ismade up of wound film of carbon andiron phosphate with a ceramic film mois-turised by the electrolyte serving as aseparating layer in between. Comparedwith other types of lithium-ion batteriesusing a combination of manganese ox-ide, cobalt oxide or nickel, this lithium-iron-phosphate battery, as it is called, of-fers advantages when used as a starterbattery. It is robust and consistentlyguarantees the usual voltage of 12 V inthe car’s on-board network.

The lightweight battery is made up offour cells and integrated control elec-tronics. This battery management sys-tem protects the battery from major dis-charge and guarantees a consistentcharge level within the individual cells.Once battery voltage drops below a cer-tain threshold, a warning signal remindsthe driver to re-charge the battery eithersimply by driving the car through thepower of the engine running or by meansof a conventional battery charger.

The new lithium-ion battery will also beavailable for retrofitting from February2010 on the three models mentionedfrom Porsche Tequipment. The salesprice in Germany when retrofitted afterdelivery of the car is Euro 2,499 includ-ing 19 per cent value-added tax.

Over 530,000 visitors from across theglobe, 2555 guided tours and 14,326grilled steaks in the “Christophorus”restaurant – on the 31st of January2010, the museum of Dr. Ing. h.c. F.Porsche AG could look back on a verypositive first year. As Achim Stejskal,Director of the Porsche Museum, ex-plains: “In its first 365 days our Mu-seum has developed into a truly dy-namic and living enterprise. In many re-spects we have significantly exceededeven our own ambitious expectations.”

One man, one racing car, one symbol ofsuccess: Hans Mezger and a legendary956 (right). To mark the 80th birthday ofthe successful engine designer in No-vember of last year, Porsche Develop-ment Chairman Wolfgang Dürheimerproclaimed: “Hans Mezger is one of themost important engineers in our com-pany’s history. For four decades, ourracing cars won with engines designedby Hans Mezger and made the Porschename a synonym for sports perform-ance around the world.”

In addition to Dürheimer, the long over-due celebrations in Weissach were at-tended by Porsche CEO Michael Machtand fellow board members Klaus Bern-ing and Wolfgang Leimgruber. Mezgerwas also able to reflect on past racingglories with motorsport legends HerbertLinge and Hans Herrmann. Over a pe-riod of 15 years starting from 1965, hewas in charge of many legendary racingcars, and his engines brought Porsche

five brand and team world champi-onships, five driver world titles, 43 victo-ries in world championship races, fourIMSA titles and 52 individual successes.Series production cars also felt hismagic touch. At the beginning of the1960s, he put the finishing touches tothe first 911 engine and, most impor-tantly, he brought the successful turbotechnology to our roads – in the leg-endary 911 Turbo. In the 1980s, he fur-

ther substantiated his reputation as the“turbo man”, when Porsche developed a1.5 litre engine for the TAGMcLaren For-mula 1 team. The 1000 HP powerhousepropelled Alain Prost and Niki Lauda tothree consecutive world titles between1984 and 1986. Today, Mezger still en-joys telling museum visitors the secretsof history’s great racing cars.

Walter Röhrl competes in standard Porsche 911 GT3 RSNürburgring 24-hour race

Porsche ambassador and testdriver Walter Röhrl (62) will be en-tering the Nürburgring 24-hourrace in May 2010. The doubleworld rally champion will pilot astandard Porsche 911 GT3 RSalong with three other drivers, making it the first time since 1993that Röhrl has competed in Ger-many’s biggest motor racingevent.

Since 1993, Röhrl has conducted testdrives in every standard Porsche vehi-cle on the Nürburgring Nordschleife.“Right from the word go, the new 911GT3 RS reminded me of a race vehi-cle”, says Röhrl. “No other road-going911 has ever been as close to a racecar as this current GT3 RS. That’s whyI’m thrilled to be able to prove that thissports car is up to the challenge of the24-hour race.”

The new Porsche 911 GT3 RS is pow-ered by a 3.8 litre, six-cylinder boxerengine producing 450 HP. The high-revving unit reaches a specific poweroutput of over 118 HP per litre. Devel-oped by the motorsport department inWeissach, the 911 GT3 RS featuresparticularly short, race-ready transmis-sion ratios as standard. The dynamicengine mounts – another standard fea-ture – offer improved driving dynamics. The mounts alter their rigidity anddamping effect to suit the driving situa-tion, thus improving the connection be-tween the engine and body on the racetrack. The aerodynamics are designedto offer greater downforce, which alsobenefits the car’s intended purpose.

“In recent years, Porsche racing vehi-cles have performed brilliantly at the24-hour race on the Nürburgring withtheir speed and extraordinary reliabil-ity”, explains Hartmut Kristen, head ofPorsche Motorsport. “Four timesstraight, it was the Porsche 911 GT3RSR that was the vehicle to dominatethe overall classification. I’m verypleased to see one of our Weissach-de-veloped road-going vehicles competingalongside the thoroughbred racers andproving its suitability for long-distancecompetition.”

The 38th Nürburgring 24-hour race willtake place on the 15th and 16th of May2010. Every year, the event attractsmore than 200,000 spectators to theNordschleife.

“Porsche Intelligent Performance” makes racing cars more efficient World premiere for 911 GT3 R Hybrid in Geneva

Exactly 110 years after Ferdinand Porsche developed thefirst vehicle with hybrid drive, the Lohner Porsche Semper Vivus, Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG is onceagain taking up this visionary drive concept in production-basedGT racing.

On the 4th of March, a Porsche 911GT3 R with innovative hybrid drive madeits debut at the Geneva Auto Salon. Thisrepresents a brand new chapter in the il-lustrious racing history of the Porsche911, having already achieved more than20,000 victories over 45 years.

The innovative hybrid system was devel-oped specifically for use in racing carsand is very different to conventionalhybrid systems with regard to its struc-ture and components. The six-cylinderboxer engine at the rear of the 911 GT3R Hybrid, which produces 480 HP fromits four-litre capacity, is supplemented

by two electric motors at the front axle, each generating 60 kW. Instead of theusual batteries employed in hybrid roadvehicles, the energy for the electric mo-tors is provided by an electric flywheelstorage system located inside, next tothe driver.

The flywheel generator itself is an elec-tric motor with its rotor spinning atspeeds of up to 40,000 rpm, storing en-ergy mechanically as rotation energy. The flywheel generator is charged when-ever the driver applies the brakes, withthe two electric motors reversing theirfunction on the front axle and actingthemselves as generators. Then, when-ever necessary, that is when accelerat-ing out of a bend or when overtaking, the driver is able to call up extra energyfrom the charged flywheel generator, the flywheel being slowed down electro-magnetically in the generator modeand thus supplying up to 120 kW to thetwo electric motors at the front from itskinetic energy. This additional power is

Porsche Intelligent Performance: The electrifying new GT3 R Hybrid

available to the driver after each chargeprocess for approximately 6 –8 seconds.

Energy formerly converted – and thuswasted – into heat upon every applica-tion of the brakes, is now highly effi-ciently converted into additional drivepower.

Depending on racing conditions, hybriddrive is used in this case not only for ex-tra power, but also to save fuel. Thisagain increases the efficiency and, ac-cordingly, the performance of the 911GT3 R Hybrid, for example by reducingthe weight of the tank or making pit-stops less frequent.

After its debut in Geneva the 911 GT3 RHybrid will be tested in long-distanceraces on the Nürburgring. The highlightof this test programme will be the 24Hours on the Nordschleife of Nürburg-ring on May 15th and 16th. The focus isnot on the 911 GT3 R Hybrid winning therace, but rather serving as a spearheadin technology and a “racing laboratory”providing know-how on the subsequentuse of hybrid technology in road-goingsports cars.

The 911 GT3 R Hybrid is a perfect ex-ample of the Porsche Intelligent Perfor-mance philosophy, a principle to befound in every Porsche: More power onless fuel, more efficiency and lower CO2emissions – on the track and on theroad.

Hilly excursion for Porsche enthusiasts

Porsche Club Südtirol came upwith something very special tomark the end of the 2009 seasonby moving its traditional annual“Törggelen” event to the 1800-me-ter high “Gompm Alm” alpine hut inthe Passeier Valley.

When implementing this unusual under-taking, the greatest problems were notposed by the off-road abilities of thePorsche sports cars, but rather by theClub’s efforts to obtain the necessarypermission to travel across a forestroad some 20 kilometres from the townof Meran.

No fewer than 18 special permits wererequired before the numerous Porschemodels were able to traverse the dizzyheights.

All vehicles were equal to the challenge

A sight to behold: Over 3000 HP parked in front of the Gompm Alm

posed by the rough terrain andemerged from their journey through na-ture completely unscathed.

The drivers, on the other hand, werefairly shaken up, which only heightenedtheir anticipation of a pleasant and en-tertaining evening. As well as the folkmusic, food and drink involved in thetraditional “Törggelen” festivities, theGompm Alm is most famous for its an-nual blues and music festival.

During the “Porsche Evening”, the Clubmembers were treated to a deliciousfive-course menu by head chef Othmar, which naturally included the chestnutdishes that are a speciality of the re-gion. Looking forward to an exciting2010 Club season, the memberstoasted their successful adventures ofthe day and an unforgettable evening atthe Gompm Alm.

Porsche Club Baden

Porsche Club Baden introduces its new Club sports carPorsche Club Baden has somethingvery special to offer: its own Clubsports car, financed by members andsponsors. In December 2009, the Clubunveiled the second Club sports car inits 25 year history, a Porsche 968 withsporty modifications that is available toall members for slalom trials. The caraccompanies the PC Baden on many ofits excursions, acting as a mobile busi-ness card. Porsche Club Baden is the only regionalClub in Germany with its own Clubsports car. The members appreciatethe opportunity to park their own carsand tackle the slaloms in the Club vehi-cle. or advanced drivers in the form of regu-larity or time trials. The results are clas-sified in the annual Club Championship.

The Porsche Karwendel Trophy of Porsche Club Tirol

Since 2006, members of the TyroleanAssociation for the Blind and VisuallyImpaired (TBSV) have been participat-ing in the Trophy as co-drivers.

The idea was born of the desire to giveour event a greater sense of social pur-pose. After due consideration, we con-tacted the Blind Association, which wel-comed our proposal with open arms –after all, who would be better suited tofeel, sense and hear a drive in aPorsche than a blind person with ahighly developed sense of sound andtouch. To make the task more interest-ing, the road book was translated intoBraille so that the blind passengerscould give the drivers, some of whomare familiar with the region, reliable di-rections.

The main event on the calendar of the Porsche Club Tirol is the interna-tional Karwendel Trophy, at which drivers from all over Europe pilot theirPorsche vehicles across annually changing and partially closed routesthrough the mountainous Tyrolean landscape.

Masterful performance: The blind drivers prove a dab hand at the wheel

“We read the drivers the route descrip-tion from the roadbook and it is an inde-scribable and intense feeling when thecar or driver responds directly to yourinstructions”, explains co-pilot Bern-hard Tschulnigg, who has been blindsince birth. Experienced co-drivers, likeBernhard Tschulnigg, can recognisemost Porsche models by their sound orby touching the car.

In 2007, Porsche Club Tirol gave 13blind and visually impaired people anunforgettable experience by allowingthem to get behind the wheel of aPorsche. At the ÖAMTC test track inInnsbruck, they were able to pilot a driv-ing school Porsche Boxster round thecircuit following the directions of a driv-ing instructor. It was without a doubt a

West Coast Holiday in Sedona, Arizona

A typical October in Arizona: thesun is shining, the Red Rocks aremore than living up to their nameand the roads are begging to bedriven in a very special vehicle —and the Porsche 356 Registry, thelargest Porsche 356 Club in theworld, is more than happy tooblige! Particularly when the drivers are on their “West CoastHoliday”.

No fewer than 402 participants from35 states and 7 countries attended theevent in 189 sparkling Porsche 356s.The group included drivers from SouthAfrica, Japan, Belgium, France, theNetherlands, Sweden and, last but notleast, a very enthusiastic member fromDenmark, who had travelled to the USAfor the Concours d’Elégance.

The 2009 event centred around thePoco Diablo Resort, a reliable venuewhich the organisers, the “Arizona Out-laws 356 Club”, had already used in1989 and 1999. As you would expectfrom a Porsche 356 Registry Holiday, there was no shortage of things to doand see. The event kicked off onWednesday with the “Gimmick Rally”.This was followed by a “warm-up” partyat the Hilton Hotel, where Sedona’s

mayor, Rob Adams, welcomed the par-ticipants to what would become ahighly enjoyable evening – one thatwould not have been possible withoutthe support of Porsche AG.

The next day was dedicated to NativeAmerican culture and led the group viathe ruins of the Tuzigoot National Monu-ment to Montezuma’s Castle. Afterlunch, there was a choice of two very in-

teresting activities: the participantscould either travel to the vineyards ofJavelina Leap and Oak Creek to samplethe well-known Pillsbury wines, or theycould visit the Walnut Canyon NationalMonument. Back at the resort, the earlyevening began with a cocktail recep-tion, followed by a house party on theOak Creek River, where the participantssat on a giant terrace and watched thesun set over Sedona.

The Friday kicked off with one of thetypical traditions of the Arizona Out-laws: the October excursion “Javelina100”. For the first time, the partici-pants were able to choose between twodifferent routes. The first covered a dis-tance of almost 200 miles from Sedonavia the Oak Creek Canyon and LakeMary Road into the highlands of Arizona– the perfect journey for “hardened”Porsche 356 drivers.

The second option, which was deliber-ately kept a little shorter, led the teamsto the former Arizona capital ofPrescott before surprising the partici-pants with one of the most impressiveroutes in the country. On their returnjourney through the old mining town ofJerome, the drivers enjoyed an exhila-rating drive through wide, sweepingcurves and tight serpentine corners. And after each turn, drivers and pas-sengers alike were captivated by thebeautiful panorama.

Until late in the night, the teams sharedtheir experiences of this unforgettableday and enjoyed a relaxing “Oktober-fest” in the Oak Creek brewery, whichwas organised by the Porsche dealerStoddard.

Despite the manifold activities of theprevious day, the next morning startedearly and with great eagerness – it wastime to get the vehicles ready for theConcours d’Elégance. It was only 9:30am when over 150 washed, cleanedand polished vehicles took their posi-tions on the adjacent golf course toface the public vote.

A very special honour was bestowedupon Bill and Connie Collins from Wind-ham, New Hampshire, who had trav-elled no less then 5775 miles via

Canada and Seattle in order to bringtheir 1965 Coupé to Sedona. The factthat their car also won third place at theConcours d’Elégance was just the icingon the cake.

At Saturday's closing gala, Club Presi-dent Chuck House lauded the commit-ment and dedication of the organisersand the ongoing passion of all the mem-bers for their Club and the Porschebrand. Together with all participants, hetoasted a successful West Coast Holi-day 2009 and looked forward to thenext event of this type in Arizona – eventhough everyone will have to wait until2019. But as we all know, anticipationis the greatest form of pleasure!
