Editorial

Dear Porsche Club Presidents,

Dear Porsche Club Members,

2004 has been an emotional year forPorsche, with both the new 911 andthe new Boxster being launched. Thishas sent out a clear signal in our corebusiness and underlined our claim tobe the world's most successful sportscar manufacturer.

The initial response from the mediaindicates that we have hit the bull's-eye with our new models. Headlinessuch as “911 on top form stirs thesporting spirit” and “The brilliant newBoxster” are just two examples of theextremely positive response from thepress around the world.

Both the 911 and the Boxster havesome glittering technical innovationsand refined shapes. But as much aswe have changed things, we haveremained true to one principle: per-fection through evolution, not revolu-tion. The 911, which has now beenproduced for over 40 years, is the bestexample of this philosophy. It illus-trates how tradition can be combinedwith sophisticated changes. This iswhat has made the model the mostfamous of all classic sports cars – andthe Boxster is on course to emulatethis achievement.

When it comes to Porsche vehiclesbecoming classics, you as Club Presi-dents and Club members make animportant contribution. Not only do youpreserve the heritage of the Porschemarque, your activities keep it freshand vital. Many of our Club memberscan hardly contain their enthusiasm forour vehicles and, as the increasingnumber of Porsche enthusiasts clear-ly shows, that enthusiasm is catching.Once again, this year has seen theestablishment of several new PorscheClubs.

This commitment is also of inestimablevalue in terms of our company's com-mercial success. And our figures pro-vide impressive evidence that we havebeen moving forward with renewedimpetus in the 2003/04 financial year:sales, turnover and profits all climbedto record levels. This growth was driv-en by the Cayenne, which achieved out-standing success in the market in itsfirst full year on sale. The SUV met witha fantastic response throughout theworld – including in the Porsche Clubs, into which it has been actively inte-grated.

Our product offensive will continue. Westill have a few things up our sleeve tosurprise our competitors and cus-tomers alike. We will certainly not beresting on our laurels, in fact we will bedoing everything in our power to con-tinue our growth trend.

Maintaining close links with thePorsche Clubs is very important to us.We truly value your commitment andloyalty. It is an honour for me to thankall of you, as Presidents and membersof Porsche Clubs, for your greatefforts during 2004.

You couldn’t really call it a ducktail, and“tray” was more like a well-meaningput-down for the powerful rear spoilerdesign. When all is said and done, thisnew sports car called for broad-mind-ed thinking: it was more brawny, morebulky, more sporty and above all morepowerful than anything that had gonebefore. When Porsche presented itsnew 260 BHP super sports car for thefirst time at the Paris Automobilsalonin 1974, the industry press was soonraving over this great all-rounder. Eventoday, the adrenaline level rises whenconversation turns to this explosion ofpower.

It was certainly something out of theordinary. Anyone who started up thefirst Turbo without being properly prepared was gripped by the concen-trated surge of power when the tur-bocharger kicked in at around 3,000rpm. The wild headlong rush contin-ued right up to 250 km/h, and Germany’s fastest road sports car wasborn.

The turbo concept was nothing new,but it was the first time it had beendeveloped for everyday use. The idea

of recirculating the exhaust gasesunder the hood to increase the powerwas actually patented 99 years ago.Its main disadvantage is the turbo lag.Constant load changes caused theboost pressure to collapse.

Then the young Porsche engineer Ferdinand Piëch came up with an excit-ing idea: small charger and small turbo lag equals faster response. Inorder to create a smaller charger, some of the exhaust gases were divert-ed using a bypass. What remained wasenough to give a considerable powerboost.

After the Turbo had proved itself dur-ing two victorious years in the CanAmracing series, it was developed for on-road use in 1974. Despite the oil cri-sis and the prevailing hostility towardscars, it quickly became a success story. Instead of the 1,000 units orig-inally planned, almost 21,000 hadrolled off the production lines by 1989.In those 15 years, it was not only therear spoiler that increased its dimen-sions. From the 1977 model year, thepower also climbed to 300 BHP andfive years later, optimisation of the fuel

mixture generation process resultedin a significant reduction in fuel con-sumption.

After 1989, the power continued itsupward course. Starting in the 1991model year, the car generated 320BHP and in 1993 the new 3.6 litreengine produced 360 horsepower, allowing Porsche’s super sports car tosprint from a standing start to 100km/h in under five seconds for the firsttime. A new dimension in turbo drivingbegan in 1995: 408 BHP thanks totwin-turbo charging and all-wheel driveensured that the model remained the leader among the world’s fastestroad cars. The 996 generation Turbolaunched in 2000 made headlines of avery special kind: despite its 420 BHP,its sophisticated technology meantthat it was named as the “world’s clean-est car”.

The 2004 version of the Turbo contin-ues this success story. A water-cooled3.6 litre engine with four-valve technol-ogy, the VarioCam Plus valve controlsystem, optimised charge air inter-cooling and engine electronics give the Turbo S 450 BHP of output withextremely low exhaust emissions. Thepower that is implicit in the launch ofevery new Turbo is still there. The onlyquestion that remains is about theshape of the spoiler. The best thing isprobably to judge that for yourself.

Porsche Spare Parts Production

Porsche Carrera for a Rehabilitation Clinic

The initiative came from Manfred Mönnich, Manager of Porsche SpareParts Production in Zuffenhausen. Inthe training workshop, a Porsche Carrera 996 was converted to be suit-able for disabled drivers and then pre-sented to the Medical Park PrienKronprinz clinic as a permanent loan. The Porsche is now used alongsideother training equipment in the therapy hall and supplements the clin-ic’s day-to-day training programme.

Patients who are no longer able to driveusing the foot pedals can use the Carrera to learn how to drive a car withtheir hands. A special lever has beenfitted directly adjacent to the steeringwheel, which is used to control the accelerator and the brake. Dr. Wolfgang Wilde, Chief Executive of theclinic explains why a Porsche is particularly well suited by saying:“Extreme situations are the best wayto learn.”

The safety of your car is always one ofPorsche’s primary concerns. That isthe reason why Porsche devotes somuch attention to developing its activeand passive safety components. Theefficiency of Porsche brakes is oneexample of an active safety featurethat is well known. However, the poten-tial braking power can only be fullyutilised if the tyres are capable of trans-ferring the deceleration force to theroad. Only perfect harmonisation ofbrakes, chassis and the tyre/wheelcombination lays the foundation for anoutstanding driving experience andsmooth deceleration.

One of the most recent developmentsfrom Porsche Tequipment is the com-plete winter wheel set with attractive19-inch Cayenne design. The tyresare approved for speeds of up to 240km/h.

The Porsche wheels include classicand modern designs, but all of themare sporty. Combined with wintertyres, they make a crucial contributionto ensuring your safety at low temper-atures. Below, you will find a selectionfrom the current range of completewinter wheel sets from Porsche Tequipment.

Factory Visits 2004

Porsche Club Japan, April 2004Impressions of the Porsche Travel Club tour through the Black Forest and the Rhine valley. The presentation of the Carrera GT was the highlight for guests during the test drives on the testing track in Weissach.

The Porsche Club Coordination arranged more than 20 factory visits again this year. Porsche Clubs from all over the worldhave experienced some eventful days in Zuffenhausen, Weissach and Leipzig and captured the best moments on film, asyou can see for yourself in the selection of photographs we have compiled for you below.

Many Porsche Clubs once again took the opportunity to combine their factory visit with a tour organised by the PorscheTravel Club – either an individually tailored tour in Porsche vehicles or one of the numerous trips available in the currentPorsche Driving Experience brochure.
