Editorial

Dear Porsche Club Member,

In this edition you will again find manyannouncements concerning or reportson splendid Club events throughout theworld. It is impressive to see how theClub Organisation is developing, andhow both the number and scale of theClub events are growing in leaps andbounds – on whichever of the five con-tinents they are held.

One of the many highlights of this sum-mer will be the Porsche Club Festivalat Brands Hatch in England which willbe held on the 28th and 29th of August2005. The Porsche Club Great Briatinis expecting more than 10,000 partic-ipants and visitors – a number thatwould have been inconceivable for aClub event just a few years ago. Suc-cesses such as these can only beachieved, of course, through activevisitor acquisition. This is done by thePorsche Club Great Britain through itsown media, but also through excellentpress and publicity work and close co-operation with the Porsche centres inGreat Britain. Together with the nationalsubsidiary company Porsche CarsGreat Britain, the Club has producedan Event Brochure which is available inall the Porsche centres (see illustratedtitle page opposite).

The brochure is based on the templateof the Porsche Club brochure which

the central Club Support provides forall clubs and marketing partners freeof charge. This template is now one ofthe most effective resources that wehave made available to you for yourclub work. The layout template in QuarkX’press, in which many suggestionsfrom the clubs were realised, affordsmany advantages for the clubs: yousave time and money because ulti-mately you only incur printing costs, and at the end of the day you get an attractive brochure which, most importantly, conforms to CI standards.

Of particular importance to us is thefact that the model gives you plenty ofcreative leeway for adding to the pre-defined basic information on the sub-ject of Porsche Clubs through optimalpresentation of your own club or event. You therefore have an opportunity tointroduce your own photos and text inaddition to your club logo, as illustratedby the sample brochure of the PorscheClub United Arab Emirates on page 2.The result is a representative businesscard for your club which shows you asan officially recognised Porsche Cluband which you can use to outstand-ingly good effect in acquiring newmembers – for example by displayingthe brochure at events or in Porschecentres.

Its new, it’s different – but it’s verymuch still a Porsche. At the heart ofthe new Cayman S. is a mid-engine concept which provides the bite, dynamism and spontaneous reactionsthat set new standards and are sure tofascinate every sports car enthusiast. The Boxer engine mounted in front ofthe rear axle forms the basis for out-standing driving dynamics, provides abalanced axle load distribution for bal-anced roll steer effect, and enablesoutstanding lateral stability during cornering. The mid-engine arrange-ment is also suitable for the low iner-tial moment around the vertical axis, superb agility and precise steering.

Thanks to a sophisticated chassis andsuspension construction with a lowcentre of gravity, the Cayman S offershandling that is particularly sporty.Over two million test kilometres andmore than 10,000 hours on the testbench speak for themselves. The light-weight construction of the chassis andsuspension, with large track width, emphasises the dynamic sporty

appearance of the vehicle which is fit-ted with 18” wheels as standard.

When combined with the standardPorsche Stability Management (PSM)system, which stabilises the car duringcornering in the boundary zone, theresult is excellent active safety. Theinterventions of this control system –

which takes into account, amongst oth-er things, speed, direction of travel, lateral acceleration and actual direc-tion of movement – are precise andconsciously retarded for an even moreagile driving experience.

The optional Porsche Active SuspensionManagement (PASM) system provideseven more sporting appeal and drivingpleasure. In addition to the body beinglowered by ten millimetres, this extrafeature includes automatic dampingadjustment to driving conditions. Thedamping is altered in a matter of mil-liseconds, and can be individuallyadjusted for each wheel. In addition,PASM allows the driver to choose – via a button on the centre console –between two different programmes:Normal, with a sporty yet comfortabledamper setting, and Sport, which provides a tighter, more sporty ride.

The Sport Chrono package, which isavailable on request, provides the ulti-mate in sporting appeal. It enables, forexample quicker responsiveness of

the accelerator pedal, and thereforemotorsport-like engine dynamics.

There was no compromise when itcame to the breaks. They weredesigned to be particularly firm andeffective. A 4-piston aluminium mono-bloc with fixed calipers is fitted as stan-dard which, thanks to the use oflightweight materials, provides a lowweight and a high degree of rigiditythanks to the monobloc construction. The Porsche Ceramic CompositeBrake (PCCB) system is also available– ceramic brake discs with 6-pistonaluminium calipers fitted on the frontaxle and 4-piston aluminium caliperson the rear. The advantage to you: low-er weight, constant and high frictioncoefficients, and a long service life.

And the drive system? The sporty two-seater uses a newly developed six-cylinder Boxer engine whose 3.4-litrecapacity generates 295 bhp (217 KW).The unit is impressive, not just with itsliveliness, but also with its high andconstant power in the lower and mid-dle revs range. Thanks to Porsche’sVarioCam Plus system for variableintake camshaft control and valve lifttiming, the Cayman S generates 30 Nmof torque which is available at between4,400 and 6,000 revs. VarioCam Plus

when combined with the front luggagecompartment (150 litres) provides animpressive amount of space.

One thing is for certain: this car willnot just enrich the world of sportscars– it will also be a valuable addition tothe Porsche Club scene. Porsche Clubmembers will get an opportunity to seethe car at close quarters for the firsttime on the occasion of the Clubevening to be held on the 19th of Sep-tember at the IAA in Frankfurt.

The character and facilities of the Cay-man S will provide you with additionalopportunities in the development ofevent programmes. See for yourselfwith a test drive, perhaps as part ofone of the trips arranged by thePorsche Travel Club shown on page13.

The Cayman S will be available fromthe 26th of November 2005.

Current information available onPorsche’s website (www.porsche.com)will help to bridge the waiting period.

was previously reserved for the 911series.

But the Cayman S. performance is verymuch Porsche – with the mid-enginemanual version of the sportscar boast-ing a top speed of 275 kilometres perhour and acceleration of 0 to 100 km/hin 5.4 seconds.

Transmission is provided by the provensix-speed unit currently used in theBoxster S, now redeveloped with itsshort, precise shift travel. The well-known Tiptronic S five-speed automaticgearbox is available as an option: therocker switches housed in the steer-ing wheel spokes allow effortless quickgear changing. The Tiptronic S gear-box has been specially adapted for theCayman S. It has also been given newelectronic and hydraulic control.

The Cayman S’s packaging is also new,of course. At first glance, anybody willrecognise it as a typical Porsche. However, styling features such as the particularly distinctive roof line andsloping rear assembly ensure that thisparticular coupé has an appearancethat is both unique and striking. Notforgetting the practical side of thispowerful package: under the large tailgate is a 260-litre boot, which,

New variants of the Porsche 911 Carrera

Addition to the 911 family

Porsche continues its model offensivewith several variants of the 911. Thenew 911 Carrera Cabrio has been indealers’ showrooms since April. Aswith the coupé version, potential cus-tomers can choose from two models:the 239 kW (325 bhp) Carrera with its 3.6-litre Boxer engine, and the 3.8-litre engined 261 kW (355 bhp)Carrera S55 PS). Larger wheels, awindbreak, Porsche Stability Manage-ment (PSM) and Porsche Communica-tion Management (PCM) have all beenadded as standard.

The two open-top 911 variants haveexactly the same top speed as thecoupés – 285 km/h and 293 km/h.With its 3.6-litre engine, the open Carrera accelerates from 0 to 100 in 5.2 seconds (4.9 seconds for the Carrera S Cabriolet).

The 911 family now includes the newfour-wheel-drive Carrera 4 and Carrera4S coupés, both of which representthe continuation of a long and suc-cessful tradition. As early as 1988Porsche had demonstrated its com-

petence in matters of four-wheel drivetechnology when it launched the leg-endary 959 and the first Carrera 4.

The most striking feature of the new911 models are the rear wings, whichhave been widened by some 44 millimetres. With the Carrera 4, thisenables the use of rear wheels with295/35 ZR 18 tyres, while its “bigbrother” is fitted with 305/30 ZR 19s.

The Carrera 4 is powered by the well-known 3.6-litre 6-cylinder 239 kW(325 bhp) engine. It accelerates from0 to 100 km/h in 5.1 seconds, andhas a top speed of 280 km per hour. The 4S variant is fitted with a 3.8-litre261 kW (355 bhp) engine. It can do 0to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds, and hasa top speed of 288 km per hour.

Through four-wheel drive with viscousmulti-plate coupling, which perma-nently brings between 5 and 40 percent of the driving power to the roadvia the front wheels, the two newcoupés shine with their well-balancedforward propulsion when corneringunder extreme conditions, absolutelystable straight-line stability up to topspeed, and improved traction – evenon road surfaces with poor grip.

The Porsche Stability Management(PSM) system has two new functions. The braking system is pre-filled duringfull braking, with so-called “air play”between the brake pads and the brakedisc eliminated and the stopping distance further reduced. The second

new function of the PSM comes intoplay when the driver applies the brakequickly but not with full force. In thissituation, the hydraulic pump compen-sates for the lack of pressure so thatall wheels are brought within the ABS-controlled range to achieve optimumbraking performance.

The Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) system providesa sporty yet comfortable basic config-uration of the shock absorbers at normal setting, but activates charac-teristics with decidedly stiffer adjust-ment after actuating the Sport button. In both positions, however, the adjust-ment is directed permanently at thedriving style and road surface condi-tions. The active shock absorber system comes as standard on the 911Carrera 4S, and is optional on the Carrera 4. If required, both models canalso be fitted with sports suspensionthat is 20 millimetres lower, includingmechanical rear axle differential lock.

The optional Sport Chrono PackagePlus is also offered for the new four-wheel drive models. It changes thecharacteristics of the engine manage-ment systems and the controlresponse of PSM and PASM. The Carrera 4 and 4 S will be launchedworldwide from the 22nd of October2005.

3. Information exchangePorsche Design Driver’s SelectionPorsche and golf: A passion (almost) without handicaps

Further information and orderingarrangements can be obtainedfrom: www.porsche.de ⁄ shop

Waiting for a discount can be tire-some, but it can also be informative –assuming that you have the currentgolf statistics to hand. For instance, did you know that although the USAhas more golfers and golf coursesthan anywhere else in the world, thestronghold of the sport is actually Iceland, whose population of just

300,000 can while away their time on56 golf courses situated between volcanoes and geysers: a figure with-out equal. The rules also provide a treasure trove for knowledge-thirstygolfers. Would you have known, forexample, what happens in the – admit-tedly rare – case when a goat grazingon the course swallows your ball?

The answer: if there are witnesses, you can resume playing with a newball, but if nobody saw what hap-pened, nothing will be of help – andyou will incur a penalty stroke. Thearticles in the new golf collection fromPorsche Design Driver’s Selectionensure, however, that the game is stillfun, even after such a mishap.

Innovative technologyMobility and functionality make thegolf bag set an attractive package –it also fits into the boot of the Boxsterand the rear seat area of the 911.

The strains of Mungo Jerry’s old hit “Inthe summertime, when the weather isfine…” can be heard on our radiosagain. It’s a golden oldie that raisesthe spirits and evokes thoughts of sum-mer and sunshine. People are out andabout and having fun. It’s a good jobthat Porsche doesn’t just transportemotions, though, but also bicycles, surfboards, boats – or whatever youwant.

Roof rack system for the Cayenne

The intelligent transport system fromPorsche Tequipment throws its weightbehind yours. The roof racks can eas-ily be fixed in pre-defined positions andarranged for various transportationmountings. Like the Cayenne’s boatrack or surfboard holder.

In view of the height of the vehicle, theloading assist – a device which allowsthe load rack to be turned laterally – isa practical accessory for the Cayenne.Lifting a bicycle up onto the roof, forexample, does not call for greatstrength, but can instead be done con-veniently by fixing it to the rack at chestheight. Other transportation mount-ings, for example the surfboard holder, can of course also be fitted on the loadassist.

Porsche AG carries out regular execu-tive training programmes every twoyears. During these two years, it is nor-mal practice for participants to definetheir own projects. Some time ago, agroup had set itself the goal of devel-oping, producing and marketing a highly accurate metal model of the“Master” Porsche tractor.

The Kovap company from Nàchod(Czech Republic), one of the marketleaders in the metal toys segment, waschosen as the development and pro-duction partner. Contact was firstmade in March 2004.

In order to achieve the best possiblelikeness to the original, the groupincluded in its development pro-gramme members of Porsche tractorclubs, owners of restored tractors andthe operator of a former official autho-rised garage for Porsche tractors.Operating and repair instructions werealso utilised as a source of informa-tion.

In several cases, the prototypes pro-duced in the course of the productdevelopment cycle were matchedagainst the originals and, in conjunctionwith the development partner, corre-sponding changes made to the model.Further meetings were held with themanufacturer to ensure the quality ofthe final product and monitor theprogress of the project.

The details were co-ordinated with thePorsche Museum, Porsche Design Driver’s Selection and Porsche AG’sPurchasing department. The Kovapcompany was commissioned to manu-facture the model. The Porsche legaldepartment also entered into a licenceagreement beforehand allowing thePorsche name to be used for this product.

The end result of the project is a driveable, steerable 1:18 scale metaltoy model of the Porsche Master. Themodel is powered by a winding-upmechanism, operated via the rearwheel hub, which moves the tractorvia a gearbox (four forward gears, onereverse gear). The model is finished inthe original paint (RAL 3002 “Porschered”). The engine, gearbox and sus-pension arms for the tools arestamped or imprinted in metal. Even

details like the headlights and exhaustsystem were modelled on the original.

In addition to this basic version, a “spe-cial edition” limited to 1,963 copies(as per the last year of production ofthe Porsche Master) was producedwith several particularly high-qualitydetails, such as a burnished gear lever.A booklet containing information aboutthe model – using the original designof the Porsche Master operatinginstructions – is also included.

The special edition is obtainable fromAugust 2005 at a cost of 69.– EURplus VAT through the normal PorscheDesign Driver’s Selection distributionchannels. Details are also availablefrom the Porsche Design Driver’sSelection catalogue valid for the 2006model.

This will be followed towards the endof November by the more basic version which will also be availablethrough the Porsche Museum in Zuffenhausen.

Magny Cours 2005

The event in March at the Magny Coursracing circuit was the meeting whichkicked off, so to speak, Club Porschede France’s season. A splendid springweekend awaited the almost 150 par-ticipants who attended over the courseof the two days, 43 of whom had reg-istered for the sprint test, 23 for thelong-distance race, and 17 for the reg-ularity competition. Apart from sever-al classics, a new Boxster S and acurrent 997, it was mainly RSs andGT3s from all years of manufacturethat were being driven. The greatestadmiration was reserved for a racingversion of the GT3 RS and, of course,a fantastic newly-restored 2.6 RSR.

Driving took place on the Friday andthe Saturday. Friday was chosen aheadof Sunday because experience hadshown that participants rarely took inthe whole of the Sunday programme. Most start to pack up from early after-noon to get home in good time, notleast because they have to go to workon the Monday. For this reason, theFriday was chosen for free driving forall, while the competitions were con-centrated on the Saturday. Whilst thenumber of participants in the races issteadily increasing, the good news isthat the number of young people par-ticipating is also on the rise.

Those whose experience of this eventgoes back some time had missed thepresence of the former President ofthe Club Porsche de France, PhilippeAunay, at this event who had unfortu-

nately passed away some months pre-viously. We will all miss him greatly.Until a new president has been elected(expected in the coming winter),Philippe Brétille and the members ofthe Club office will do their best to dealwith any issues and resolve any prob-lems as they occur.

The Porsche Francorchamps Daysrank among the most popular eventsin Europe – as evidenced by the fifthsuch event, which was held betweenthe 20th and 22nd of May. Those wholike to put their Porsche through itspaces on a racing circuit will love thisevent. There are three optional cate-gories: “Fun” for amateurs with produc-tion vehicles, “Sport” for experienceddrivers, and finally “Racing” for ownersof racing cars.

Particular thanks go to the BelgianPorsche importers D’Ieteren for thegreat commitment they have shown.Their staff were able to get hold ofspare parts at short notice whenrequired, whilst mechanics fromPorsche centres carried out minorrepairs and servicing free of charge.D’Ieteren also arranged an attractivepresentation of the current Porschemodel series – through to the CarreraGT.

The Porsche Selection Truck alsoproved a popular attraction. The

attempt at a new record for driving asmany Porsches as possible on the racecircuit simultaneously was a sight tobehold. In co-ordinating the attemptthe organisers drew on the experienceof last year’s event. The sight of somany Porsches is difficult to describe:just try to imagine a packed motorwayon Bank Holiday Saturday, and withevery vehicle of the same marque.Enthusiasm levels were raised still further when the result of the countwas announced: 658 Porsches – a newworld record.

Formula 1 drivers in the GT3 Cup

An incentive event staged by CreditSuisse was held ahead of the GrandPrix of Bahrain at the Dubai Autodrome.Felipe Massa, one of the drivers of theSauber team sponsored by the Swissbank, acted as a “taxi chauffeur” in aGT3 Cup flown in from Germany. Hispassengers included important bank-ing customers from the United ArabEmirates. After three laps as passen-gers at racing pace, they were giventhe opportunity to test out the road-worthy Porsche vehicles on the race-track.

As experienced instructors, the Presi-dent of the Porsche Club UAE, KarimAl-Azhari, and his motorsport manag-er Blair Cole gave their highly motivat-ed guests an insight into the secretsof the track. The local Al Nabooda LLCPorsche centre kindly provided thecars for this part of the programme.

Several weeks later, the bank invitedguests to attend a similar event at theHockenheim circuit – this time with

Jacques Villeneuve and vehicles fromthe Porsche Sports Driving School. Both events show how even Formula 1sponsors like to include the fascina-tion of the world of Porsche in theirprogrammes.

Porsche Club Estonia opened thisyear’s season on the 30th of April withthe second staging of the Canoe Racing event. The event had been heldlast year for the first time with greatsuccess. Canoeing was not the onlyactivity on the agenda, of course. Themain part of the event was a rally fea-turing Porsche vehicles – this time over144 kilometres. The rally’s destinationwas not announced in advance, how-ever those who closely followed theinstructions in the road book dulyarrived about two hours later at a loca-tion near Hotel Veskilla on the banks ofthe Pärnu river on the site of a formermill.

The excursion included various enjoy-able tasks. For example, drivers hadto fill up with exactly 5.00 litres of fuel, and take their receipt to the destina-tion as proof. After lunch at the hotel, everybody looked forward - some morekeenly than others – to the 10 kmcanoe trip. With a temperature of justfour degrees Celsius, the prospect ofcapsizing the boat was far from a rosyone. Fortunately, however, everybodywas dry upon arriving at their destina-tion, and participants enjoyed a con-vivial club evening at the hotel.

The launch of the Porsche Club Cham-pionship 2005 in Italy could hardlyhave been a bigger success. The three-day anniversary party heldin the Hawke’s Bay Region on NewZealand’s North Island was intended tobecome one of the biggest events inthe club’s history. The response aheadof the event was overwhelming, but forlogistical reasons the number of par-ticipants had to be limited to 120.

The event, which took place from the3rd to the 6th of June, featured a var-ied and entertaining programme forthe participants; apart from visits tothe region’s major vineyards, therewere also tasks to be carried out. Forexample, a rally was held on the Sat-urday at a place which probably bearsthe longest name in the world:Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauota-mateaturipukakapikimaungahoronu-kupokaiwhenuakitanatahu.

Each participant received a book con-taining 25 photographs and many puz-zles en route. Despite much to-ing andfro-ing, many of the participants wereunable to complete all of the tasks.

Our team did succeed in getting holdof a black wine gum sweet, but thehubcap of a car from 1975 eluded us.Over the course of the day we demon-strated our talent for cleaning and ourskill in handling a toy Porsche to gainfurther points for the rally.

The day ended on the Te Awa vineyardwith a dinner, live music and dancing. The Sunday saw a visit to the MissionEstate Winery where a breakfast buf-fet had been arranged in an enchan-ting chapel. Highlights of the dayincluded a slalom which blindfoldeddrivers had to negotiate under instruc-tion from the passenger. In the after-noon, 60 participating vehicles linedup at the Hawke’s Bay Go-Kart Clubwhere the public had the opportunityto admire the 356, Carrera RS 2,7,GT3 and 911 from all years of manu-facture.

The focal point of the Sunday eveningwas the gala dinner laid on at the BlackBarn vineyard. The presentation cere-

Porsche Club Event with Cayenne

The Porsche Club of South Africa,Cape Region held its Porsche Club 4x4Event on a private farm near Silwer-stroomstrand, a small town on thewest coast of South Africa. Of partic-ular note here is the exemplary inter-action between Porsche dealers andthe Porsche Club: the Porsche CentreCape Town has lent generous supportto this wonderful event. The instructorwas Johan Smith, a well-known four-wheel drive expert, who introduced theparticipants to some tips and tricksfor off-road driving. These includedreducing the tyre pressure in the rearwheels to one bar while leaving thefront wheels at 1.2 bar so that the tyreswould not slip off the rim.

The instructions for driving in sandwere: select low-range mode, closethe differential lock, switch off PSMand engage second gear. The thirddriving stage was chosen as the oppor-tunity arose. Things progressed nicely

so long as nobody decided to stop, switch the engine off and enjoy theview. Anyone forgetting to carry outthe instructions given after the enginehad been started wouldn’t get beyondthe next incline.

The participants soon got a feel fordriving on difficult terrain and mas-tered all of the requirements. Theywere supported by the brilliantPorsche Traction Management systemwhich directed the torque to thosewheels that are in contact with theground when a wheel hangs in the air,or which enabled steep downhill sec-tions to be negotiated without apply-ing a foot to any of the pedals.

This exciting day had not onlyincreased the drivers’ self-confidence– it had also impressively demonstrat-ed to everybody involved the off-roadcapability of the Porsche Cayenne.

Rarities amongthe vehicles present included threePorsche 550 Spyders, a 904, andeven a Porsche phaeton. The buffet onthe first evening at the Thermae PalaceHotel provided an ideal getting-to-know-you opportunity for the partici-pants, who had come from France,Switzerland, Spain, Italy, the USA andBelgium.

The excursions were the focal point ofthe three days to come. On the Friday, the 6th of May, an excursion took participants along remote windingcountry roads to Bruges where the programme included a tour of the cityand a boat trip. The visit to the DeHalve Maan brewery, which dates backto 1546, was also a lot of fun.

The rally the next day took participantsover the border into the Netherlandsand then back along the Belgian coastto Ostend where a gala dinner was puton in the kursaal in the evening. Thiswonderful meeting concluded on theSunday in both laughter and tears –the latter because former club presi-dent Walter Pauwels Amt resigned hispost, much to the regret of us all!

The sound of popping champagnecorks heralded the new record: a totalof 187 Porsche 928s had come toVoorschoten in the Netherlands for theInternational Porsche 928 Meeting. But the meeting, held between the14th and 16th of May and supportedby the Dutch Porsche importer Pon,had other highlights in store.

The participants, who had travelledfrom all over Europe to attend themeeting, enjoyed marvellous excur-sions through the land of windmills –including visits to a pottery, the port ofRotterdam where a paddle steamer tripwas also laid on, and the Louwman Col-lection, a very interesting automotivemuseum in Raamsdonksveer.

The return journey from the museumto Voorschoten was an unforgettableexperience: a convoy stretching 2.5kilometres and consisting of nothingbut Porsche 928s wound its waybriskly through the weekday trafficcourtesy of a police escort. The suc-cessful meeting, which was roundedoff by entertaining even programmes, also saw Porsche Club Supportappoint Volker Spannagel as an hon-orary member.

Butthis wasn’t to be the last time that theblue car was used. Two more appear-ances at weddings followed.

Taken aback by the popularity of hiscar at weddings, Phil Carney askedaround to find out whether there hadbeen any other weddings featuring aPorsche. Here are the results of hisenquiries:

Edgar and NadjaMarried in secret on the 30th of July2004 in Lawrenceville, Georgia. Theythen sent the photo with their 356 ASpeedster by e-mail to all their friends, most of whom just had to look at thenumber plate to realise what had hap-pened.

Richard and witnessesRichard with consoling witnesses August2003: It was supposed to be a weddingin the Porsche 356, but the engine wasbeing overhauled and was not ready intime. Richard quickly arranged for areplacement, but it was missing someimportant parts – and unfortunately themany offers from friends to lend him aPorsche came too late.

Chris and SundaeIn October 2003 Chris and Sundae usedthe 356 Convertible D not only as a dec-orative requisite for the wedding photo, but also as a good luck vehicle.

John and MicheleTied the knot in June 1994 in Palo Alto,California. A borrowed Porsche 356 Convertible D went along too. They cele-brated their tenth wedding anniversary atthe “50 Years Speedster” anniversarymeeting in Monterey.

Micah and JenThe wedding took place in the spring of2002. The photographer was adamantthat he wanted the Porsche 356 in thepicture.
