Through our Catholic Faith, GROWING IN MIND, HEART, AND SPIRIT TO BECOME LEADERS IN THE WORLD

Dear Warrior Families,

As we begin a new semester and a new year, I imagine each of us has done some

planning, dreaming, and goal setting, and this is good. In fact, there are many

examples to be found in the Bible with reference to our visions, our work and our

plans. For example:

2 Chronicles 15:7 “But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded.” Psalm 20:4 “May he give you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed.” Proverbs 16:3 “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” Proverbs 16:9 “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establish-es their steps.” Matthew 17:20 “Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.'” Luke 14:28 “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it?” According to Dr. Michele Borba, author of Unselfie: Why Empathetic Kids Success in Our All-About-Me World: “Goal setting is one of the most highly correlated traits of peak performers and successful individuals.” According to Dr. Borba, “Studies show that goal-setting can help kids gain the sense of discipline and the internal drive it takes to stay motivated to complete the tasks they’ve set for themselves.”

How can we help students learn about goal-setting? Borba recommends seven steps: Step 1: First define or explain what a goal is in a way that your child can understand. Step 2: Share your own goals and aspirations and model putting them into the formula: I will + what + when…

Allow your child to overhear you saying your plan. It might be as simple as, “I will finish reading this book by Friday.” Or, “I will finish my degree by next year.” For me at this moment, it might be, “I will have these closed washed and dried by six o’clock,” as I see the mound of laundry in the basement. Step 3: Help your child make a “dream list.” Help them see that “goals start with dreams.” Take time to discuss dreams and aspirations. (Grades, hobbies, interests, friends, exercise, TV viewing, free time, saving money, homework, school, reading, behavior, new skills, chores, new learning…) Step 4: Help tailor the goal to your child. Dr. Borba explains that first-time goal-setters need to see some immediate success. Consider a goal that can be achieved within at least a week. Read a book (or a page a night) Learn how to address an envelope Make my bed each day Brush my teeth without reminders Clean my closet Finish that school project Step 5: Help your child think through the steps to success. Identify the what + when. Then, list what needs to be done and help gather resources. Step 6: Track your child’s progress by some type of visual reminder and give encouragement along the way. “Look how close you are to reaching your goal! Look how you have improved!” Step 7: Celebrate success! Take a picture! Cheer! Let them pick their favorite dish for dinner! And remember what we have been taught as we each work towards being better versions of ourselves:

“I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” Philippians 4:13
