Because the skin is so fragile, it can be easily injured, causing painful blisters to form. In people born with EB, the two skin layers lack the protein anchors that hold them together, resulng in extremely fragile skin. The EB Foundaon was in need of funds to conduct research and the cause for our first Walk-a-thon was targeted. Aſter the student graduated, we considered who else in our school community needs our help. Who else can we serve? We looked around and found Camp Unl a Cure and Camp ROCKS. These summer camps in Indiana are available to children who have diabetes and children who have ausm, two condions some of our students have. For the next several years the Walk-a-thon donaons went to those causes. Last year as Walk-a-thon approached, we knew we had a special cause we could support. Lane Dunscomb, one of our third graders, was suffering from Ewing’s sarcoma, bone cancer. We knew that our efforts could be most fruiul by donang to his family and to the Make a Wish Foundaon. Our first Walk-a-thon shirt was designed and many Warriors proudly wore one on that day. I asked Lane’s mom and dad if it was okay for us to remember Lane this year by using the funds donated to upgrade our playground in his name. When kids play on the playground, they will always have the chance to think about him. I remember Lane as a courageous, funny, energec, smart lile boy who taught us many lessons about dealing with adversity. One of his classmates said about him, “Lane loved everybody and that’s how we all should be.” Very true. Making a Difference with Each Step We Take –
Walk-a-thon 2015 A little history of the St. Barnabas Walk-a-thon… About 10 years ago one of our

Every day, we have the ability to make a difference. It could be the small things we do like being kind to someone in need, taking time for others, or even just a friendly smile. Although these small acts seem simple, most of us go about our day and often forget to do what God has called us to do. In Romans 8:28, “we know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. For those who foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of the Son so that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those he predestined he also called; and those he called he also justified; and those he justified he also glorified.” We celebrate that God called Lane to be seated with him this past year. Lane always tried to make everything and everyone around him better. Through his example, we have an ability to make a difference during this year’s Walk-a-thon. To celebrate the memory of Lane and keep his legacy always close to our hearts, this year’s Walk-a-thon theme is Making a Difference with Every Step We Take 2015. The proceeds from the Walk-a-thon, along with the money donated from Lane’s memorial, will be used to improve the playground equipment and create a special recognition for Lane. By coming together, giving of ourselves, and walking by faith, we have the ability to make things better for all our children. Let’s follow Lane’s example and Make a Difference with Every Step We Take. Please support Walk-a-thon 2015, Making a Difference with Each Step We Take, by purchasing a shirt and by donating to the cause. Join us on that day as we encourage our St. Barnabas family to consider how we can make a difference every day, just as Lane did.

Our 10th Annual Walk-a-thon will take place on Friday, September 25. The funds collected this year will
be used to upgrade our playground in memory of Lane Dunscomb. Please support Walk-a-thon 2015, Mak-
ing a Difference with Each Step We Take, by purchasing a shirt and by donating to the cause. Join us on that
day as we encourage our St. Barnabas family to consider how we can make a difference every day, just as
Lane did.
We have received a $6000 matching grant from GameTime for playground equipment, so our goal for Walk-
a-thon 2015 is at least $6000!
How can you help?
Order a Walk-a-thon shirt for $7! It will be a quick turnaround so please place your shirt order
by Tuesday morning, September 15th. All proceeds from the shirt sales will go to upgrade the playground equip-
ment.
Donate money. Money can be sent to school next week and will be used on playground upgrades.
These checks should be made payable to St. Barnabas School and noted in the memo that they are for
this cause.
What should I wear? We encourage all to wear the Walk-a-thon shirts or St. Barnabas spiritwear.
When do I walk/run?
PreK—8:00-8:30 Run/walk on the football field
Grades KN/1/2—8:45-9:30 One mile run/walk in the neighborhood
Grades 3/4/5—9:45-10:45 Two and one half mile run/walk in the neighborhood
Grades 6/7/8—11:00-12:00 Three mile run/walk in the neighborhood
Parents are welcome to join in any of the walk/runs above. Please gather
near the pavilion. There is no need to sign in at the office on that day.

The St. Barnabas Library is now open and ready for business! Through a partnership
begun last year, we are an official branch of the Indianapolis Public Library. We offer many services including weekly deliveries of books ordered by our students and access to the entire collection of the Indianapolis Public Library… nearly 16 million items! Please encourage your children to log on to http://www.imcpl.org/ with their account number and order books! Books ordered by Friday are usually available for pick-up in our library the following Wednesday (depending on availability). It is fun to see their excite-ment when their books arrive. Most students have library cards. If your child does not yet have a library card, please complete an application (available on the imcpl website) and deliver it to Kathie McCarthy.

SCHOOL VOLUNTEERS
To volunteer in a classroom, library, fieldtrip, Walk-a-thon, 8th grade concession stand, Pioneer Day, Etiquette Lunch, coach of any sport, etc. any person 18 years of age and older must be compliant with the Archdio-cese Safe and Sacred program and complete a background check every five years. If this is not completed, you will not be able to volunteer. See the link below to fulfill the requirements. MIDTERM REPORTS
We are half-way through the first quarter and midterm grades should be
reviewed on JupiterGrades by parents and students. Since grades can
be viewed 24/7 we aren’t printing and sending home midterm reports.

STEM in ACTION…
Update for Grade 6 Science… We are shifting from the process skills of science (observing our natural world) to the engineering side of things (solving problems for the human-made world). In class the students focused on the question: What is an engineer? We found loads of cool things—one being that aerospace engineers help design golf courses...who knew?!
One of the students asked the question, “What type of engineers design baseball stadiums?” He went on to tell me about wind currents in stadiums, etc... So--thanks to Software Engineers, I was able to google this and and we emailed the Director of Business Development-Sports--Mr. Drew Berst, and asked him the question.
He responded, “Thank you so much for the note! We work with a number of engineering firms, and one in particular we utilize quite frequently is Thornton Tomasetti. I've actually copied Steve Hofmeister from their firm on this email. He might be able to send you some pictures and other information. We need more engineers in this world!”
Then, I emailed Mr. Hofmeister with the question. And he responded, “I sure can! I’m traveling internationally until Monday, but will call then. Both responses were immediate. I hope to have an answer for my student from the experts soon!!! The point is--both men responded IMMEDIATELY! And, my students were SO EXCITED to learn about all the different types of engineering. The enthusiasm in the room was palpable. Such a fun day!
STEM DAY SEPTEMBER 18
Our first school-wide STEM Day is September 18th. For 2.5 hours all of the students will be engaged in
activities that integrate science, technology, engineering, and math. Thank you to our teachers for their
dedication to offering meaningful learning experiences to our students as they grow in mind to become
leaders in the world!

during the Walk-A-Thon to make sure the students stay on course and to provide safety on the course. If

Please join us for this year’s Father/Daughter dance in the St. Barnabas gymnasium. All Dads/Grandpas/Uncles etc. are welcome.
The cost is $25 per Dad and the girls are free with paid adult. We plan to have lots of things for the girls to do. Photo Booth, Craft, DJ, Nail station, Gift Card giveaways, and plenty of snacks, treats and drinks.
If you are interested in purchasing tickets please send in the bottom of the flyer with payment to Laura Bridgewater. We will not send home actual tickets but your name will be on the sign in sheet the night of the dance. Tickets will also be available after 9am and 11am Mass in September.

DISMISSAL AFTER MONDAY CHOIR PRACTICES
There are 92 students staying on Monday afternoons for liturgical choir practice. That’s great! We are ask-
ing parents who come to pick up their students to line their cars up in the lot just as we do for regular dismis-
sal and one of the teachers will dismiss the cars after all students are loaded. It will work best if no cars pull
up in along the drive and wait for students to come out. Thank you!
