The district built 2 days into this year’s school calendar for inclement weather. The weather already required us

to close for 5 days. That leaves 3 days of lost instructional time we need to create to follow state requirements.

The early release days scheduled for March 15 and May 10 will now be scheduled as full

school days. The last day of school, June 5, will now be a two-hour early dismissal at 12:48 pm.

Starting on Thursday, March 7, the district’s elementary school dismissal times will be extended. Elementary

schools will end their school days 8 minutes later. For Spence, this means we will dismiss at 2:48 pm. The

extension will last through the end of this school year.

This will also effect Pre-K: Morning session will dismiss at 10:38 am. Afternoon session will dismiss at 2:43 pm.

Afternoon preschool will be available on March 15 and May 10 because of the new full-day schedule.

Riteway Bus is aware of these changes. Be advised that your student will be dropped off 8 to 10 minutes later

than current time.

Further inclement weather days requiring us to close school this winter will result in additional changes.

Celebration Events:March 11-22 – Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood Sweater Drive

Bring in a new or gently used sweater or sweatshirt for donation.

March 18-20 – “Good Neighbor” lessons done in classroomsMarch 20 – Cardigan or sweater dress-up dayMarch 20 – Greeting card delivery to our Spence neighborhood

The March food pantry bag will be sent home on Thursday, March 21. Thanks to our fifth-graders for filling our monthly food bags! PBIS: DONUT FEEL GOOD TO BE KIND?

-Spence PBIS TeamPositive Behavior Interventions & Supports

This is the question that hangs in the Spence hallway above the three donuts students and staff decorated with kindness sprinkles as part of our most recent Champions of Learning lesson! We read the book, The Jelly Donut Difference, by Maria Dismondy, and even got to enjoy a donut hole after! Special thanks to Festival Foods for giving us a discount on our 400 donut holes!

With winter weather upon us, we are continuing to review our winter playground expectations. Please remind your child that he/she needs a coat, hat, mittens, boots and snow pants! Students who do not have boots and/or snow pants cannot play in the snow, they must stay on the blacktop. Additionally, all snow and ice must stay on the ground. Finally, we follow the rule, “You build it, you break it,” which means that students should not be destroying other student’s snow creations.

If you would like any PBIS resources for home, please contact the office, and one of the PBIS coaches will get back to you! These expectations are not only good for school, but also work at home and in the community.

Be Safe. Be Respectful. Be Responsible.

Spotlight on LMCThis month we will be celebrating reading and Dr. Seuss’s birthday! I will be sharing The Cat in the Hat Knows A Lot About That series with grades kindergarten through second. This is a series based on Dr. Seuss’s popular character, The Cat in the Hat. This series is designed to spark a love of learning and an interest in science and math. You can also find games, videos and print outs available on the PBS Kids website at http://pbskids.org/catinthehat/We also have a large collection of his original stories for your child to enjoy.

The Matt Hessel-Mial writing contest has been introduced to all of the students in grades second through fifth. This is a contest that promotes the love of writing in memory of Matt Hessel-Mial. All entries are due by March 21. A brochure will be sent home with all interested students. Please encourage your child to participate!

Once again, we had a successful Battle at Spence. The top two teams, The Biscacorns and The 4 Musketeers represented Spence at the district Battle of the Books. I am proud of the extra effort put forth by all of the students that chose to participate in this year’s battle! -Mrs. Dunn

2018-2019 PTO OfficersJocelyn Buxton - PresidentHeather Young - Vice PresidentTricia George - SecretaryLindsey Branson - [email protected]

PTO is working hard on getting everything ordered for our new additions to our primary and upper playgrounds! We will be adding a basketball hoop to the primary playground, and a GaGa Ball pit to the upper playground. Hopefully the snow melts soon, and we are able to enjoy these items this spring!

Our January Family Movie Night and February PTO meeting, were cancelled due to bad weather. We will work to reschedule our movie night. Our next PTO meeting will be on April 9th. This meeting will involve taking nominations for any open PTO positions. If you are interested in a position on the PTO, please let us know! If you don’t want to be a PTO officer, but would like to be more involved in what is happening at Spence, please attend a meeting!

On March 1, Spence will be holding it’s Read-A-Thon. We are looking for business sponsors to help support his event. If you know any local business owners, please reach out to them for either monetary or prize donations. A special thank you to Little Feet Helpful Hands and The Board Store, who have made monetary donations, as well as Pizza King and Altra, who have donated prizes!

Guest Readers Needed: If you are interested in coming to read to your child’s class on March 1st, as part of our Read-A-Thon, please contact your child’s teacher!
