Spring Break Begins

Here are some highlights of the learning and activities of our 8th grade students as they spend their last quarter as St. Barnabas Warriors.

The 8th grade has completed a project about a “Changing America” in Social Studies. They have researched many of the important inventors of the Industrial Revolution, as well as the artists, authors, and reformers of early America. Students collaborated with a partner through our Google slides program to put together some wonderful information on how America has changed and developed its own identity. They will move west into California, Oregon Country, and Texas, as the timeline builds toward the Civil War.

In Science the eighth graders are studying the various aspects of resources and the interaction of these resources with living things. The class first addressed environmental issues and how and by whom decisions concerning the environment are made. Students looked at natural resources and the importance of maintaining them for now and for future generations. They also delved into how the human population has grown over time, the factors that have allowed it to grow, and the effect that this growth has had on our natural resources. Last, but most importantly, they looked at biodiversity, its value, what factors affect it, and the role that humans play both in damaging and in protecting biodiversity. They will continue along the same line of thinking when they address land, air, and water resources and the role they play in our global population.

In Literature, the stories behind Flowers for Algernon and To Kill a Mockingbird give students an opportunity to analyze and discuss how characters and situations bring about reader empathy. Literary themes focus on courage, bravery, injustice, and prejudice and springboard discussions of contemporary examples of each theme. Junior Scholastic articles and Scope stories keep the students aware of current and controversial topics. Evaluating arguments takes skill and effort to prove that solid reasoning needs to back up supporting arguments; claims must be factually supported.

Eighth graders are preparing for the Living Stations of the Cross, to be presented at noon on April 3rd, Good Friday. This is always one of the most reverent times of the year, and it very meaningful for the 8th grade class to lead the student body in this solemn occasion. The students represented St. Barnabas well at Roncalli’s Quest for Excellence, many of them are in the spring production of The Stingiest Man in Town, and they recently completed scheduling their freshman classes. It is a very busy time to be an eighth grader.

It's Time to Clean Out Grandma's Closet!

St. Barnabas is seeking costume and accessory donations for the spring musical. The story, The Stingiest Man in Town, is set in the winter during the 1850s and we need the following to outfit our actors:

-vintage style long dresses and skirts -women's bonnets -shawls, wraps -vintage looking suits and suit jackets (small adult size) in brown, black, plaid or pin striped -derby hats, newsboy hats -solid or plaid winter scarves -old gloves (to be cut into fingerless gloves) -vintage style purses, small suitcases or briefcases

If you are able to contribute, please send the item to school and mark the item for St. Barnabas Musical!

IRISH CONCERT

Thanks to the generosity of two of our grandparents, the students will be treated to a concert by Irish musi-

cian, Eunan McIntyre on Thursday, March 19th at 1:15 in church. All are welcome to join us.

TROPICAL DAY

It’s been a long, cold winter and to celebrate warmer weather and the beginning of Spring Break, we are

having Tropical Day on Thursday, March 19th. Students may come dressed in their favorite tropical gear.

No sandals, please.

WORKS OF MERCY

Mrs. Beckham's second graders have been discussing what they could do for

others during Lent. They have been reading and discussing how Jesus told his

followers to take care of the needs of others. These actions are called Works

of Mercy. Two of those actions are feed the hungry and give drink to the

thirsty.

The students decided those were the actions they wanted to work on during

this Lenten season. They have been collecting canned food and bottled water

and are contributing it to the St. Barnabas food pantry and the Hoop

organization so that people in need can have food and water. When we help

others in loving service, we act as Jesus did.

SOUTH DEANERY STEM DAY

Good luck to our students who will be participating alongside teams from the other south deanery

elementary schools this Saturday at Roncalli High School. Students in grades 5-8 were invited to be team

members for the first annual South Deanery STEM DAY.

Our 6th grade team members include Ethan Anttonen, Aidan Galt, Thomas Ralston, Evan Coffman, Elaina

Harmon, Gianna Romano, Darbi Lux, and Maggie Peats.

Our 7th grade team members include Ethan Gosser, Abby Davey, and Joseph Woodruff.

ATHLETIC ELIGIBILITY

Our school policy is that if a student is absent more than three hours during a school day, he or she is not

eligible to participate in any team practice or game on that same day. Attendance at school is important.

TARDIES

A reminder that students are considered tardy if not in their classrooms by 7:30 AM. Please make sure that

students are dropped off before 7:30 in order for them to begin their day in a good way.

REPORT CARDS

Grades for the 3rd quarter will be finalized in JupiterGrades on Tuesday, March

17th. At that time we ask all parents and students to login to their JupiterGrades

accounts to view quarter 3 progress in learning. Report cards for quarter 3 will

not be printed unless requested.

As parents view students’ grades online, each click on a subject drills down the information to show the

assignments and tests included in a grade and the standards represented in the grade.

We’d be happy to answer any questions parents may have about using our online system to understand

student progress. Please email Denise Wilson, Debbie Perkins, or the classroom teachers.
