Can You Help St. Vincent de Paul?The St. Vincent de Paul Society hopes you and your family and friends are well and safe. We hope you have everything you need to carry you through this difficult time … shelter, food, clothing, and household essentials. Many of our neighbors do not. Can you help us help them?

We are in dire need of volunteers at our Food Pantry as well as facemasks. We also need donations of gently used clothing, linens, kitchen and household goods. With the closing of our two Mission 27 Resale stores, we also need your financial support. Our drive-through food pantry is helping almost 1,000 families each day and increasing rapidly.

Many of us will be receiving a check for $1,200 from the economic stimulus package recently passed by the Senate. Some of us may not need this money. Some of us may want to give back to the families we serve. Can you help?

Governor Holcomb announced that the State of Indiana is moving into Phase Four of “Back on Track Indiana.” Mayor Hogsett announced that the city of Indianapolis would shift to Phase Four on Friday,

June 19. What does this mean for us at St Barnabas? We are working with directives from the archbishop to apply to our parish the significant modification of restrictions by both the governor and the mayor. We hope that we can soon make the church more available to parishioners for worship, personal prayer, and devotion. We will use e-mail and the webpage to alert you to any changes. www.stbindy.org

Last weekend the Church celebrated the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ, also known as the Feast of Corpus Christi. (Corpus Christi is Latin for The Body of Christ). Those parishioners who have returned to church in recent weeks have expressed in very beautiful ways their delight at being able to receive Holy Communion once again. If absence makes the heart grow fonder, then these past three months of sacramental deprivation have helped us to appreciate better the tremendous grace to be able to receive into our persons the Lord’s Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity. May we always treasure the gift of the Holy Eucharist, and may we never let sin separate us from our communion with the Lord.

Some parishioners are exercising the virtue of prudence by remaining at home until further abatement of the coronavirus. They are consoled by the Archbishop’s helpful dispensation from the Sunday obligation to attend Mass, a dispensation that remains in effect until at least August 14. Many have shared with me their appreciation of The Act of Spiritual Communion when physically unable to receive Holy Communion. That prayer appears below as a help for all of us. The prayer may be repeated several times a day even by those who receive sacramentally. The prayer expresses the deep longing of the heart and soul to be united with the Lord in this world and the next. May our faith be ever ardent and strong so that we will be mindful always that, as St Augustine says, “our hearts are restless O Lord, until they rest in Thee.”

Mass Coordinators Needed

St. Barnabas Catholic Church is seeking a part time pastoral, creative,

relationship-driven, and dynamic Coordinator of Youth Ministry to serve

alongside our youth, parents, and members of the parish. This position

will continue to strengthen existing ministries for high school youth and provide a pastoral presence to our

parish school and public school students.

The ideal candidate should have at least 3 years of youth ministry

experience or comparable experience. Applicants must be a practicing

Catholic in good standing with the Church. This candidate should also

have strong organizational skills, written and verbal communication

skills, and should be fluent in the latest technological trends. The applicant

must have the ability to coordinate and work well with volunteers and exhibit

good leadership skills.

You find yourself in the difficult situation of being accused of blasphemy and confronting possible execution. Your crime is believing in Jesus Christ. The question is then asked of you, “Are you a Christian, a follower of the one named Jesus Christ?” Your answer may very well dictate what happens to you next. What is your answer?

It is probably easier to answer this question when the scenario is make-believe. All of us want to believe that we would say yes to the question of belief in Jesus, but strange things happen when humans panic in the face of extreme stress. As we reflect on what we would say, there are those all over the world who are being asked that very same question. It is a question that was asked of many in the first centuries of the Church. Those who respond “yes” are considered martyrs and saints.

We might not usually think of all this in terms of good stewardship living. However, our faith is also a gift we have received from God to cultivate, grow, and share with others. The more interesting question than the one posed above is, “Would an accuser even think of asking you such a question?” Would you have cultivated, grown, and shared your faith enough that anyone would even consider you worthy of asking the question? They might assume you don’t know Jesus Christ at all. I don’t like conflict and do not seek out conflict, but I would rather someone ask the first question posed than assume there is no reason to confront me in the first place.
