ALL THE MEWS IS GOOD NEWS

Looking forv'/ard to my sixtieth birthday later this year, v^e have undertaken to push theconstruct ion of -e-t- -r-ra-;L rrve-church burldrn"gs~ Ve already have sutficient funds in handto make a good start on this project. The Swarupnagar Church has $9,000.00 in hand to begin conistruction as soon as the legal technicalities can be unraveled. The Christians inPalia (on the Nepal border) now have enough to buy a piece of land. Two other congregationsin Kanpur are organizing themselves so that they can own property. H. L. KhoJi, who isbeing ordained on Jan. Sushi] Lewis went away for trade training without being baptized but he v/as finally baptized on Sept. 28th while on a short vacation. Our "bad boy" Sanjai, now in a schooi faraway, was baptized in an evangelistic meeting at the school in October. His letters wouldhave us believe that he is improving. Our finances 'were very good during 1983- Contributions were sufficient, and we arespending less money with a smaller house, one less employee, and one less vehicle. As I have pointed out before, my cashposition has been easy ever since my visitto the U.S. in 1981-82. It is not for meto ask people to stop giving, especiallywhen I never ask them to start giving; andevery cent is spent with prayer for thegreater glory of God. However, if thereare some donors, especially those livingon social security, who need to decreasetheir contributions, they can do so without grief. Others may find it more convenient to send once every two or threemonths instead of every month which is alright with this missionary (but otherslike it every month).

After my October visit to South Indiain October, I was at Bilaspur for sevensermons and feilowship with the Rolandsand Getters. After that I preached fivesermons at a missionary conference nearhome. There was also a weekend visit toPalia on the Nepal border. I spent oneday in Delhi shopping for books. Thismonth I am making rny first visit toGujarat State, going by air and returningby train. In February, I will ride two ofIndia's best trains down to Bombay to attend a booksellers meeting. Christmas wasgreatly enjoyed at Kulpahar. When I amhome, I enjoy my hobby of baking somethingor-other on—Friday afternoons. Let meknow when you are coming.

Not everyone In the U.S. liked thephoto of me with my beard but the beardhas a good effect in India. I plan toshave it off when I come to the U.S. In1988.

I am usually away from Kanpur on mybirthday but this year I got caught. Itwas Sunday and my turn to preach at ourSv/arupnagar church. The Sunday Schoolchildren sang me a special song, gave mehand-drawn cards and gave me a stainlesssteel cup and saucer. The church gave mea iarge size woolen wrap.

A monkey was accidently electrocuted Inour neighborhood on Dec.l4th and was givena grand funeral.

MARCH 198A

DUPED - —

In my last newsletter, I bragged about Jolly Dutta, "a student rushing to completion a small church building he is almost single-handedly building at Jehanabad." As itis, he was pocketing the money with both hands. When two of us visited his town on Jan.26, we found he had nothing to show for the $350.00 we had given him for the buildingalthough he tried to deceive us by showing us a new government warehouse worth about$20,000. We thank God that He helped us save the $850.00 we were about to add to theproject.

Riots continue in Punjab State where Goodwin and Susheel are in training. The boyswere eye-witnesses to the destruction of a tea stall in front of their institute, andthe non-fatal stabbing of its owner. The boys themselves are not in any great danger.

My last baptism of 1983 was on Dec. 30th, and the first of 198^ was on Feb. 1st. Themotives of both these were suspect but something better is in prospect.

Deenanath (blind) is now happily employed as a teacher with Jerry and Heather Lacsonat Kotagiri in south India. He will be coming back for college exams. Usevius (Kuku)now has his driving license but success, if it ever conies for him, may be years away.He is hardly seventeen. After losing a lot of other peoples' money in various businessventures, and after ruining his marriage, Harinam is down near Bombay making videofilms. He does not send us his proper address because creditors are looking for him.

I did not see Harinam but I saw some of his world when I visited Bombay for a book-sellers convention early in.-F-ebruary. 1-went down on two of the worWs-bes-t—trains,-and the one I came back on was good enough. 1 came back with new ideas and new enthusiasm for my born-again bookstore. I have had it re-registered again with the authorities, but as a bookshop without employees.

With help from the Pate Memorial Fund, we have purchased a new refrigerator replacingthe old Electrolux which kept things cold in winter and cool in summer. It served mefaithfully for 23 years and I was sort of sorry to see the old friend go. Otherwise, everyone is happy with the improvement.

I will be gone from Kanpur for half of March, first to Madhya Pradesh (Central Province), then to the Nepal border. TTie ordination of H.L. KhoJ i Is now scheduled forMarch 25th. The weeks before Easter are very busy with preaching. 1 plan to preach atKulpahar for Easter, and soon after that I will leave for my summer's work (May andJune) ar the Sat Tal Christian Ashram.

The well-kept accounts of the Kanpur mission committee (Kalisiya Sahayak Sanstha) arenow audited. The 1983 expenditures are here translated to the nearest dollar:

Hostel, Education, Training $2A27.00Other Benevolence 32A.OORent, repairs, electricity 2107.00Transportation 871.00Salaries of employees 2356.00

During 1983, the Kalisiya Sahayak Sanstha was given $17,150. whereas they spent11,A7^- a difference of $5,676. Some of this has been spent during the first two monthsof I98A, and the rest Is in the bank ready to be spent.

Lawrence Lazarus, one of our former employees, is doing a good job as one of thepastors of the Swarupnagar, (Kanpur) Church, and he is also helping to establish a newchurch. This month we are buying him a new scooter to speed him on his way.

MAY 198if

HAPPY DAYS ARE HERE AGAIN

All our days in Jesus Christ are happy days but some days the news isbetter than on other days. In the March newsl-etter, I announced the firstbaptism of 198^, a young man who has since been married. There have nowbeen thirteen others and they make an interesting list. Four were fromnon-Christian backgrounds, two of these being non-Christian wives ofChristian husbands. One of these husbands had spent a year at the Kulpa-har Kids' Home when he v/as a child. An older brother of Usevius (Kuku)was baptized, and one girl on the Nepal border.

The latter baptism was in a beautiful river on the edge of the junglewhich we reached after a very tiring and hot two-hour ride in a buffalocart. This must be the world's slowest mode of transportation, For thereturn trip, I flagged down a bus and everyone followed me onto the bus.The cart driver came home by himself. Tv;o days previously, I had enjoyeda two-hour ride in the jungle on the back of an elephant. Several tigerssaw us but we only saw one python and two crocodiles.

Although I keep saying that the Indian pastors should do the baptizingthe records show that during the past tv^/enty years, I have personallybaptized 71 believers. Some of them have departed for The Better Land.Sixteen were from non-ChrIstian backgrounds. I have been baptizing forkO years but the records for the first twenty years are not easily available.

Preaching being "in season" just before Easter, I preached 33 times in29 days. After that, I went to Kulpahar for the long Easter weekend.

_Back here in Kanpur, Dr. Vijal La! of Damoh preached to a mammoth crowtf-at the annual ^ a.m. Easter Dawn Service sponsored by the United Christians Committee of Kanpur. Shortly after finishing this newsletter, Iwill leave for my summer's work at the Sat Tal Christian Ashram. TheLord willing, I will be back in Kanpur on June 25th after another visitto Ku1paha r.

As planned, I ordained H. L. Khoji to the ministry on March 25th, butI also took advantage of the opportunity to ordain Victor Das who haspastored the Swarupnagar Church for thirty years without the benefit ofordination. Khoji has given the widest publicity possible to his ordination. We have given him some .mor financial help for the improvement ofh i s chapel.

I bought several new furnishings for the bookstore and I now have Itabout the way that I want it. The seating capacity has also been doubled.Another new feature is that one of the pastors comes here three morningsa week to meet anyone on this side of town v/ho happens to need his services.

Our Madras publisher has begun work on my "0 Happy Way" which containsnine articles published in Christian Standard. They are essays on theBeatitudes. Another series, "The Lovllest Trip in the World," (our lifeIn Jesus Christ), is appearing monthly in the Light of Life Magazine ofBombay. It will be put Into booklet form in 1985. The Hindi translationof "Parable of the Plugs" is being printed in Kanpur.

During the hot dry days of April, 1 have had the help of a $7.00 contrivance which I have hung in my bathroom window. I keep it wet bythrowing water on it, then the dry wind blowing in the windov/ does therest. It is not possible to use a hose because there is never enoughpressure in the pipe to push the water up the hose. This device is of no

mornings

his ser-

trivance which Ithrowing water onres t. It is not

pres su re in the puse in July when the heat becomes humid.

Miss Mary Muppet enjoys travelling around and she got some new clothesfor Eas ter.

Of the 37 railway stations set afire by Sikh extremists in the stateof Punjab, one was in front of the school where tv/o of our boys, Susheeland Goodwin, are in training. Susheel's one year course will soon endbut Goodwin's is a two year course. There is hope that the Punjab troubles have reached their climax and will nov/ begin to recede. The extremists are beginning to kill each other, and many have also been jailed.Someone should write a. book about the lunatic fringe.

"HARTER THROBS"

The. latest news from Kanpur is thaf PastorLawrence Lazarus baptized four sisters onEaster Sunday morning. There have been goodreports of all the Easter services.

The weather has been unusual with rain, thunder and hail. The temperature has alsobecome suddenly pleasant.

It is delightful to ride through thecountryside at this time of year. The wheatis being harvested and winnowed as in Bibletimes. Here and there, tractors are in use.Indians have another use for tractors tocarry trailers loaded with people to supplement the bus services. On one recent trip,I paid a truck driver to allow me to ride 25miles on-top of a load of bricks.

News has been received in India of thedeath in Kansas of former missionary—toIndia, Kent Bates. We enjoyed his sermonsand loved him as a friend. Kent helped mewith the only young people's camp that weever held in Kanpur.

In India, numbers are often given in lakhsand crores. A lakh is one hundred thousandand is written 1,00,000. Ten lakhs is amillion. A crore is a hundred lakhs, or tenmillion, and is written as 1,00,00,000. Yesit is confusing, and it trips up most translators .

"Black money"money received1ike bribes. 11

books, never receipted, and never reportedto the various tax departments. The amountof "black money" in circulation in India isfantast ic.

India has its own subtle meaning for theword "communal ism," and it is sort of hardto define. When Sh ias and Sunnis ki11^achother, or Hindus and Muslims, or Sikhs andHindus, or Protestants and Catholics, as inIreland, then these are communal riots. Itis communal to only vote on racial or religious 1ines.

AMRITSAR AND OTHER DISASTERS

ago^ I vrs^i-tred^th^ Oolden Tempi^e crF the"Stkhs at Amrltsar and "T must hav^time that "those who live closest to the temple are the least religious."

Things got much worse after that. No government on earth would have put up with what wasgoing on. It was as though the Mormans would fortify their temple in Salt Lake City withthe intention of making Utah a separate nation. The extremists also carried out a vigorous campaign of extensive sabotage and murder. More than 1000 were killed when the army finally moved in, and one didn't know whether to weep or shout for joy, or do a little of both. Many army mutineers v/ere captured near Kulpahar and a fevj at Kanpur also. The carnage in Bombay between Hindus and Muslims was also very tragic. In the hills wewere a long way from these happenings but the radio kept us well informed and it was allthe subject of much excited conversation.

We had some excitement of our own but it was relatively harmless. Beginning May l6th,we had the "fun" of forest fires all around us for five days and nights. Particularly onthe night of 16-17, we felt somewhat like the Rich Man in Hades. On the evening of the17th our buildings were threatened but the fire was not difficult to stop once it gotnear. The pine trees burned only as long as their turpentine lasted and so they were notconsumed. When it was all over, very little damage had been done in our area. It beganto rain on June 1st and now everything is green: you would hardly know that there hadever been a fire. The conflagration moved all through the Himalayan foothills and sever—al died elsewhere. The government took no action to put out the fire and it was everyman for himself. Army helicopter pilots, flying over the area on theireouJdn't have cared 1ess.

daily runs

A lunatic also attached himself to us for two weeks and that also added pepper to thecamp fellowship. One evening when I was preaching at the lakeside, Mathaiya jumped intothe lake. Coming out of the water, like Jesus coming out of the Jordan, he threw out hisarms and declared "Blessed are the poor in heart for theirs is the kingdom of God." MaryMuppet thought that this was the best sermon she had ever heard: Biblical, dramatic, short, and to the point.

^Despite my protests, Usevius (Kuku) was married on May 25th in a double ceremony inwhich two brothers married two sisters. Kuku is not yet 17 but his mother gave an affidavit that he is 21. She also borrowed a lot of money from people which she will neverbe able to pay back. Kuku has no job and has never shown any serious inclination towork. The older brother is not much better.

I turned down an opportunity to become a member of the Executive Committee of the Satam becoming more and more useful around the place. This sum-Tal Christian Ashram but

mer I opened a shop namedpreached nine times.

On April 29th, I had the honor of breaking ground for thecated on the opposite side of Kanpur. V/hile I was in thestarting a boys' home on that side of Kanpur but I ended upwas not the Lord's will.

The folk at Kulpahar have given me a new assignment. I am to guide some of their pel—sonneL in a seminary extension course. I am making a-trip -to Mew Delhi to find outactly what I am supposed to do. It is hoped that I will be able to handle thisregular trips to Kulpahar.

In the meantime, after a two-month rest, Mary Muppet and I have once again begun ourperiodic visits to ten churches and three schools. My sermon for July is "The Rich Manand Lazarus." From August, I will be concentrating on the Gospel of John, and thatrun for several years. Our students are back in their schools after their summertions. Several of our girls have been interviewed for nurses training.

The printers continue work on two of my books, one in English and one in Hindi, butthey are very slow about it. Baptismal certificates have been in the process ofduction for more than six months. Eventually it all turns out alright.

OCTOBER 198^1

NOTHING MUCH EXCITING

We are presently in the middle of our rainy season but so far the Tains have beenmoderate and non-interrupt!ve. It Is normally a slow season but sales In the bookstore have been good. I continue my regular circuit of preaching in differentchurches and schools with occasional trips out of town. Visits to New Delhi are becoming less frightening and I do enjoy its pizzas, hotdogs, hamburgers, pancakes andumteen flavors of icecream. "American pie" is now advertised In Kanpur but 1 haven'tsampled it.

The blind boy, Deenanath, was here for a month taking his college exams and we arenow expecting him again. He will probably be looking for a new Job. A sweet kid,Amarjeet, from Kulpahar is spending a year with us. He has found himself a job teaching First Graders, and he Is also learning typing and shorthand. He was ready to quitafter his first day with the children but since then every day has been better thanChe day before. Sanl has taken his "bad" boy Sanjai up to Punjab State for six monthswelder's training. We still have hopes that he will become a "good" boy but it Istaking a long time. Goodwin Das, who is as good as his name, is now in his secondyear of training for motor mechanics at the same school. Sushi 1 Lewis has finished{and failed) his one year training in tractor mechanics. Of our "old boys," Kuku, three months married and not yet seventeen, is still without a job. Naughty Tommy wasin town for a couple of weeks. Everyone likes his wife but I see no change in him.Down in Bombay, the film-crazed Harinam seems to have lost touch with reality. Exceptfor Sanjai, all of these boys are fatherless.

I have finished a series of ten articles on"The greatest Trip in-the World," (ourtrip through life with the Lord Jesus Christ), for the Light of Life magazine ofBombay. When all have appeared, they will be put into booklet form. That may takesome time because the editor is not publishing them regularly every month. Two otherarticles are with the Chr i st ian Standard. My Madras publisher-brother is taking avery long time in printing my latest book, "0 Happy Way." 1 get the impression that heis planning to make it a post-humous volume.

India has just celebrated its 37th year of independence, and I have entered my 38thyear of work in India. Every year I must apply for permission to reamin in India another year, and that permit has just been renewed. There are trouble spots in Indiabut Kanpur has seldom been one of them.

The oldest of our Kanpur church members, Samuel Yusuf, died on July 17 at the ageof 72. People will not remember him as being particularly loving or generous buteveryone will miss him anyway. He was the father of Stephen, Stanley and James (thesethree are active members in the church), Horatius (deceased), Irene, Ruth and Martha(a nurse in Delhi).

One day 1 went up to Fatehgarh to investigate the scholastic record of one of ourgirls, which turned out to be not very good. I left the house at 3'30 a.m. and walkedin the rain two miles to the closest suburban railway station. The train was an oldone with most of the windows broken out. Not only did rain come through the windowsbut through the roof as well. I ended up using my umbrella inside the train. Thetrain took me up In five hours and the bus brought me back in three. There are betterand faster trains to Fatehgarh but not at the time I wanted to go. On my walk to thestation, I only saw one other person.

I have lately been surprised, delighted, and encouraged by the number of young menwho stop In to visit with me. I hope that they also find some encouragement fromthe i r visit.

This year 1 will be voting for the first time In an American presidential election.I am also now the warden for Americans in Kanpur. That isn't saying very much becausethere are only two of us living permanently in the city. The others are students whowill soon leave for the U. S. It would be my job to help evacuate them in case of anyunforseen emergency.

My hobby of baking something on Friday afternoons continues. Sometimes the resultis pretty good and at other times it is pretty awful. It is always interesting.

SERMONS ABOUT MONEY

The theme of Jesus' preaching was"The Kingdom of God" butpreached more about moneybout anything else. Halfbles deal with money. Hecause He knew that our

where our treasures are.

I am very sorry to say that theChristians of north India are mostlystingy in their stewardship. It isvery difficult to find anyone whotithes. They think that they are toopoor to tithe but no one is too poorto tithe. The tragedy is that God isunable to bless them because they haveclosed the windows of heaven againstthemselves.

George Gallup learned how to predict the outcome of an election bytaking samples of opinion. I can predict what people would do with a lotof money by watching what they do witha 1ittle of it.

So this month at the differentplaces where I preach, I have beenasking the people how much they havedeposited in the Bank of Heaven? Havethey indeed opened an account at all?Just because t4Tey- we re-poor on— earthdoesn't mean that they have to be poorin heaven.

TRAUMATIC EVENTS

In my last newsletter I said that Kanpur was seldom a trouble spot, and that Istrue enough. I am sorry to report, though, that riots broke out here following thedeath of Mrs. Gandhi. Many Sikhs were killed and their homes, shops and vehicles werelooted and burned. As 1 write, we are under a curfew but this is gradually being relaxed. Thousands of Sikhs have been evacuated outside the city. Only the baser elements took part in these riots. Except for the confinement, we did not suffer anygreat inconvenience. Our food was running out, but it didn't. The supply of electricity was better than usual due to the closure of factories, offices and cinemas. Fourcinema houses belonging to Sikhs were burned. By the kindness of our landlord, wewere able to watch the funeral of Mrs. Gandhi on TV. It was a time of getting to knowour neighbors better. Only five of us. Including the janitor, made It to church onNov. 4th: the others being discouraged by the announcement that they could be shot Inthe head If they stepped out into the street. I walked to church (a mile each way)without being challenged. In the afternoon also I kept my appointment at a girl'sboarding school. I did not, however, venture to keep my evening appointment becauseit was In a section of the city which was more seriously disturbed.

There was better news before all of this started. Sales in the Bible Book Storeduring October totalled Rs. 8500, the best ever. I doubt If any other Christian bookstore in the entire state of Uttar Pradesh did as well. Besides in Kanpur, I sold atthree other places. Also, salesmen take things from here and sell door to door on acommission basis. They sell not only In Kanpur but In places hundreds of miles in alldirections. 1 conclude that this is better than having employees and renting an expensive location downtown.

I am planning to treat myself to a short vacation on the occasion of my sixtiethbirthday. I will be absent from Kanpur for the first four days of December as I visitthe Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary and the "pink city" of Jaipur. I may make this an annualvacation: wish I had thought of it earlier.

You might like to celebrate my 60th birthday by reading some of my books. They areavailable FREE from the Clinton Church of Christ, 2545 W.' Comet Rd. Clinton, Ohio44216. The church Is not to be confused with our forwarding agent. The books Include"ABCs of the Christian Faith," "What Kind of a Person Should I Be?","Lessons From theSchool of Faith," "Some Things that are Definitely Bad," "The Parable of the Plugs,""Body, Soul and "Spirit," "Them," "To Save a Life, Your Own," "The Anatomy andDiseases of the Spiritual Eye," "The Truth About Nicodemus," and "Same Story NewTwist". My latest book, "0 Joyful Way," is off the press but not yet available withClinton Church of Christ. Presently, two of my books are being printed In Hindi andone In Tami1.

You will be surprised to hear that Deenanath, the blind boy, has been married insouth India. We have had no word from him since. Our ward, Goodwin Das, who wastraining In the Punjab, has been very ill. One of my "daughters-in-law", Usha Stephendied on Sept. 2nd after an unsuccessful operation on a brain tumor. The death ofDorothy Mae Schmale in Cincinnati was a great shock to her many friends around theworld. The whold world seems darker without her. Dorothy had travelled extensivelyin India and enjoyed it all with her usual good humor.

Two of us from Kanpur attended the second All-India Convention of our churches. This time the convention was held at Damoh in central India. 1 preached once In English and once in Hindi. The next convention will be held In Karela in S. W. India after fifteen months.

1 have deposited the price of a new scooter but it may be a year or even two beforethe scooter Is delivered. The new one will be a little better model than the old onewhich is now seven years old and getting wobbly. Thousands of scooters were destroyedin the recent holocaust.

At age 60 you know that you are somewhere In the last quarter of your life: it isthe autumn of your life and the leaves are falling one by one. Just remember thattrees in winter have their own beauty.
