NEWS OF RALPH "BUD" HARTER, MISSIONARY

A RUNNING STARTWith the Lord's generous help 1 reached Clinton on May 6th and only the Lord's help got

me here because 1 had reached "the end of my tether" and was very near to cancelling out.On my last day in India one of my papers was missing and there was nothing that anyonecould do about it; but here I am.

Steve Dunham of Tom's River, N.J., came up to N.Y.C. and took me down to their home fortwo nights, then drove me over to Philadelphia. His wife Rhonda is the daughter of thelate Henry and Mildred Neumeister of Orrvllle, Ohio. The next night 1 stoped v-^ith Mr. andMrs- Wm. Eraser near Harrisburg and Hershey, Pa. At the moment 1 am at Clinton, Ohio butI will soon be taking off for Michigan, Missouri and Iowa. 1 must be back in Clinton byJune 10th. My address is Box 85, Clinton, Ohio A^2I6; and Telephone No. 1-216-882-^401.

The Swarupnagar Kanpur Church met in their uncompleted building for Christmas and NewYear's, and now they are meeting there regularly since April 30th. More than 100 heard mepreach there just before I left for the U.S.A. I also baptized six young people on March19th. The building is far from finished but it already looks impressive.

I did not get to visit Pakistan due to visa problems and now I have another visa problem that might necessitate my return to India in December. 1 would like to stay In theU.S. until March and 1 am corresponding with the Indian Consulate about it. At Kulpahar,Linda Stanton has been given an order to leave India without any reason given. The order isunder appeal. Linda has been a blessing to everyone and it will be a great loss to usif she has to leave. The Indian Government does not allow new missionaries to take upresidence in India although visitors can come in for up to six months.

The exams this year went off very well and 1 am hoping for better grades than 1 gotlast year. 1 am now studying Greek for the 1990 exams.

My sister Phyllis will be celebrating her birthday in Helsinki so 1 don't know when ourpaths will cross. She and her husband are part of a group that will be taking Bibles intoRussia.

Our Indian Income Tax case was not yet decided but it was looking hopeful. If we getextricated we will buy a three-wheeled vehicle, otherwise not. In the meantime we havedivided the 17 year old "Kalislya Sahayak Sanstha" into three organizations: The K.S.S.will take care of benevolence; the "Kanpur Christian Book Sockety" will take care ofliterature; while the "Kanpur Center for Christian Studies" will take care of Bible studyprojects. Some payments will be made with dollar checks without qoinq through our rupeeaccounts.

There are lots of helpers managing things during my absence. The forming of new committees has itself brought in 14 additional helpers. Amarjeet Singh is taking care of thebook store while SanI is taking care of the house and scholarships.

My driving license usually exprles while I am out of the U.S. which causes complications when I come back, and this time they have some new rules. Chuck Jeffries of Clintonis in charge of getting me on the road.

Frankfort, Germany, is half-way between New Delhi and Mew York City. It takes 8 hoursfrom New York to Frankfort, and another 8 hours from Frankfort to New York. The stopoverin Frankfort should be at least two hours.

The Clinton Church has been setting aside$25 a month for my furlough. This v/as notonly sufficient to bring me from India butthere is enough left over to take me back.Praise the Lord for that! We were havingbanking troubles when I left Kanpur but atotally unexpected gift of $100 from themissionaries at Kulpahar saved the day andgot me to New Delhi where my American Express Credit card took care of the rest. This gift from Clinton and its expenditureare not shown in the financial report.

    OTGUST, 1989:SS DOUGLAS IS RETIRING

Florence Douglas has faithfully andsacrificially served as our forwardingagent for thirty-five years. As shehas now moved from Ozark Bible College into a retirement home, it doesnot seem proper to burden her furtherwith this work. Although final details have yet to be worked out, thisresponsibility falls to the ClintonChurch. You may send your contributions to:

Checks may be made out to ClintonFirst Church of Christ, with "IndiaMission" written in the lower lefthand corner.

Words fail in trying to express ourgratitude for all that Florence Doua-las has done though the years as shespent both time and money on our behalf. I am sure that all of you joinme in wishing her a happy retirement.

The Lord willing in all things, Iwill leave Seattle for India on Tuesday December 5th. In the meantime myitinerary looks something like this:

Anyone interested may either writeto me at Box 85, Clinton, Ohio 44216or with cousin Mary at (216)882-4401

We join with thousands of othersin lamenting the death of ArthurMorris, i am recalling happy dayswhen we both puttered around a golfcourse at a hill station in southIndia.

The news from Kanpur is mostlygood. Progress is continuing on thechurch buildings. A successful DVBSwas held, and a Friday night prayermeeting has been started. At Kul-pahar Miss Linda Stanton is beingallowed to stay for the time being.

There have been many enjoyable moments during this furlough, from theAtlantic to Kansas, from Michigan toTennessee. I will long remember theflowering crab of Ann Arbor, thelaurel of Pennsylvania, the historical sites of Bethany, W.Va., and theNorth American Christian Convention;and more to come. This is the firstfurlough that I was not invited toany camp but three weeks of D.V.B.S.helped to make up for that. It isnot easy to teach three-year-oldsabout missions. I failed a drivingtest and have so far been unable toretake it.

"Mary Muppet" now has a sister,"Phyllis". She is the gift of mysister Phyllis of Sevierville, Tenn.

My plane ticket from and to Indiahas been purchased by the ClintonChurch.

You will want to meet our new forwarding agent. Ken Downs. Ken andhis wife, Mary have both been knownto me since their childhood. Theyhave^ two children ages 10 and 14.Ken is 38 years old, tall, handsomeand an Elder in the Clinton Church. He is a nephew of Shirley Toledo, formerly a missionary in the Philippines, and Kenjs mother (Shirley'ssister) was Shirley's forwarding agent. The appeal on our Indian Income Tax is still pending. Our lawyer assures us that the decisionwill be in our favor but we are notall that sure about it. There is aclash between our lawyer and ourauditor and the auditor will probably be changed.

Letters from Kanpur tell methat the Swarupnagar Church has begun mid-week services. Also morechairs have been purchased.

A video tape has come from India but some kind of conversion ofit will haye to be made before evenI can see it on an American videoplayer. The Clinton Church is working on the problem.

Soon I will begin to receiveSocial Security payments of about$170.00 a month.

A sad item from Kanpur was thedeath of one of our Priscillas, Mrs,I. Das of the Govindnagar congregation. We are all a bit devastatedby it.

Deepak Lai is a very promisingyoung preacher whom we have beengiving some help. He was hoping tostudy for a B.D. degree but he failed the entrance exam. This discouraged him and he went into secularemployment for ten days (and tensleepless nights) until his conscience forced him back into theministry. At this time he is inBangalore which is considered to beIndia's finest city. (Not too farfrom Madras)

    At the time of writing thisnewsletter, there are still somedates available mid-weeks, but noSundays. ' Available week dates are;

    OCT 24-27 IOCT 31 - NOV 2 INOV 7-10 I

    NOV 14 - 17NOV 21

People often ask what changesI have noticed in the US since 1981:

    1. Much attention to choresterol2. Bus stations are cleaner and

better guarded, (busy)3. Many big towns no longer have

bus service, (expensive)4. Many "Help Wanted" signs.5. Many big stores have merged or

disappeared.6. Wide variety in seat belts.

    Cars are very expensive.
