NEWS OF RALPH HARTRR

BOX 3, P.O, NAWABOANJ," KANPUR 20fe002 INDIA

JULY fqR]At the moment of writing there is nothing definite to say about my departure from India forfurlough but when I come I will probably come quickly. I have applied for the permit thatwill permit my return to India: it may come soon, it may come late and there is always thepossibility it won't come at all. After It comes, a "Clearance Certificate" must be procured from the Income Tax Office, and tickets must be purchased. If time permits, I amplanning to reach Ohio via Calcutta, Thailand, Korea, Japan, Seattle, Calgary and AnnArbor. The Lord willing, I will participate in a Timothy Rally at the Clinton Church Oct.4-7, and attend the National Missionary Convention in NYC Oct. 22-23 and the Conference onEvangelism in Cincinnati Nov. 10-12. Our class of '46 will enjoy its 35th AnniversaryReunion. And if I stay here then 1 stay here where I am always busy.

I was more useful than ever this summer at the Sat Tal Christian Ashram in the hills, preaching thirteen times. My blind boy Dlnanath attended the first half of the programwhich was in English while one of my helpers, Sani Masih, came for the Hindi half. Bothwere much helped by the experience and spoke of it In the Kanpur church when they got backhome. Tragically, two fine boys, ages 16 and 11, were drowned in the lake on June 13th,one trying to save the other. It is a beautiful but dangerous lake. It is sobering to

in the lake on June 13th,lake. It is sobering to

realize that mine was the last sermon they heard before they left for their heavenly home. One of the preparations I have made for leaving Kanpur is that 1 have sent Usevius to a

boarding school in the eastern part of the state. The school is located in a small quiettown which 1 trust will provide the proper environment for serious study, something Useviushas avoided here in the big city.

There will still be several living here at Bible Bhavan: Sani Masih will serve as "Housefather," and his tv/elve year old son Sanjai will also be here. Dinanath (the blind boy)and David Morar will continue their college studies. We are also expecting the arrival ofSushil Lewis, a fatherless boy from Hamirpur who v^/i 11 be In the Eighth Grade. We hadagreed to take another boy who is complete family-less but he has temporarily dropped outof sight.

As the new school year begins, there is only a siight.change in the line-up of girls whomwe support in boarding schools. Anita and Jessie go to school in the town of Fatehgarh.Salome, Mona, Pinky, Mariyam and Elizabeth study at the "Union Mission" Girls' School inKanpur while Shiwani Das studies at Hudson School. There is one other girl but detailshave not yet been worked out. Elizabeth is a new addition and comes from one of our poorestfamilies. She is about as unrefined as they come. We previously fitted her brother with awooden leg and bought him a horse. The education of Shiwani may be in Jeopardy due tofamily troubles. Her mother, who is mentally disturbed, recently married a non-Christianand then left him. The man is seeking to exert economic pressures on her to force her toreturn and he has threatened to remove Shiwani from school. Tune in tomorrow....

Harlnam has also had marital troubles mostly brought on by himself. Quarreling with hiswife of several months, he proceeded to sell the wedding gifts and her clothes. I am toldthat he was wanting to leave for the fleshpots of Bombay but that his departure was beinghindered by boi1s.

The two boys who have been in training, Arvlnd the good and Sunil the bad, will be finishing their training next month and will then be on their own. We also provide a scholarshipto Anoop Jas and the decision on another scholarship is pending. If Sanjai Stanley passedhis examinations then he will get it otherwise it will go to college student Clement Joel.

We also distribute about $20 a month in medical help but, despite all precautions, thismoney has often been misused. We have now turned over the responsibility of its distribution to the elders of the Kanpur church.

It should always be kept In mind that lives are not made by financial help. Education, training and health can be used to glorify the Lord but in the end it is only the word ofGod that makes lives. We have had some happy successes but others whom we have helpedgenerously and with love have completely failed in their response to the commands of Christ.Of course later In life they sometimes "come back."

Lawrence Lazarus, whose employment as "Publisher" was terminated at the end of 1980, hasnow been confirmed as a shop clerk in our Bible Book Store. He replaces E.S. Reuben whowas retired. He will work alongside H.D.S. Joel.

Unless I have a change of mind, I will not be showing slides during this furlough. Sofar every attempt to obtain pictures has led to a dead-end. Maybe the Lord is trying totell me something.

Rajiv Gandhi, elder and only surviving son of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, has nowentered politics and he is riding a wave of popularity. He gives the impression of beinghonest and mature. The rainy season has begun with the usual advantages and disadvantages.Floods have caused damage, people have been killed but that is normal for the course.Crops should be good. Phulan Devi, the woman outlaw, is still at large but she has had tosell some of her jewelry. On June 6th a train accident in our neighboring state of Biharkilled more passengers by drowning than were lost in the sinking of the Titantic sixtyyears ago. Most bodies will never be recovered.

Love,Ralph

something. No, Grandpa,It may be though that byin his heart.

But even studying in a Christian school with its daily Bible studies will not savea child unless he/she forms the habit of obediently responding to the word. Even living here with me at Bible Bhavan is no guarantee that a boy is going to turn out alright although we try hard enough. The Kulpahar Kids' Home, which is as ideal a

Christian institution as you will find anywhere in the world, also has its failures.Where is your own mind? Is it on bread or on the word of God? This problems is not

limited to the mission field. Are you studying the Bible? Do you meditate on how itsteachings apply to your life? Then do you apply it or forget it?
