A play was lield on the 23rd at the church and o 111 e r traditional activities marked the occasion. The Christmas Day church service held a record attendance for the Swarupnagar congregation. The passing of the old year into the new was observed by all our missionaries at Kulpahar which is Ralph'.'? traditioil. Amarjeet, Neeru & Soni.a also made the trip as Amarjeet's sister was to be married at Kulpahar on Dec. 301li . Nature's catastrophes, the earth quakes & flooding, did not affect the area of Kanpur at all this past fall. The record low temperatures that caused so many deaths in the northeast regions of India were not feJt in U.P. either. However, Ralph did report that the room heaters have received quite a workout lately as the temperatures have dipped into the 30's. He also reports that he has not heard of any snow here "on the plains". The Singhs and many in Kanpur also helped celebrate another birth- daj' in January. Sonia Singh had her first birthday celebration on the 3rd. She is reported to be walking and growing well. Meanwhile, Amarjeet continues to work on evangelizing many of the villages surrounding Kanpur. This effort has proved successful and many are being won to the Lord. Wit pray that this work will spread the Gospel to even more areas of India as these new Christians also become evangelists in their own way to their friends and families. We com mend Amarjeet and Neeru for their efforts on behalf of Christ as they work for His purpose. This may not; be as easy as it sounds in the midst; of raising a young daughter. We ask that you pray for them in this work and that young Sonia will grow strong and healthy, a true blessing from the Lord.

    Dear Friends at Horizons, -

Today is the ASth anniversary of my arrival in India at Bombay, birthday will be coming up in December. Although my "retiremeirt" dates frorJanuary 1, 1990, I continue to be busy with preachi^ and t^chi^.

This year I will not have to travel to the Indian version of the NorthAmerican convention because this year we are hosting it here m Kanpur afteia gap of seven years- Those who contribute financially to our Kanpur workhave helped to finance this year's convention. ^ 4.u u. v. ,

The past summer was the hottest on record which resulted in the toghesever atterdanoe at the Sat Tal caJip. That was fine the^rethe less comfortable it became. For next year, I am thxnking of somethingelse.

The hills were again ravaged this year by ground fires which would haViburned the camp buildings except tliat the campers stayed awake most of onenight fighting it- Many of the birds were left nestless and fled the area.

I have just finished a course in 14inor Prophets which occupied many moiAmarjeet has been given a oiiall room downstairs in which he has fitted

an office. The baby, tow 18 months old and nicknamed "Binnyt is doing famously. The Swarupnagar Church has beon showing some signs of continuing its o-town restaurant. Many sad jokes are being cooked up while more people thanever are eating at home.

Our electric supply is getting worse and worse with supply unexpectedljgetting cut off for many hours at a time. Eventually we will have to dowhat the Romans do and invest in a private generator which will at leastprovide us with lights and fans as necessary. The church has already agreedto pay for one third of the cost of this. Total cost would be about $500.

In a land like India* there is usually a flood or drought somewhere orother during August but there has been nothing of disaster proportions sofar this year. Although the present prime minister P.V. Narasimha Rao lackethe "charishma" of the Gandhis and Nehrus, he is doing just fine and is expected to serve out his full tenn of five years.

    SEPTEMBER 1995

    A LETTER FROM AMARJEET SINGH

    Dear Friends,

Warm greetings to you. We aresafe in the hands of our Lord Je6usChrist. Your sweet memories arestill fresh in our minds. We alwaysremember you in our prayers and tellabout you to our friends here.

It is almost two years, we metone another. Coming back to Indiawe started work at Kanpur. But God

wanted to teach us somethingmore about patience, tolerance, dependence on Him, strength of pray*"er and wisdom to do His work in adverse circumstances. First year wasour hard training period. God al-W.ays continues to teach His servant, throughout his whole life. But thatyear was really special for us.

Soon after God started workingthrough us. So far, I gave fivebaptisms. Out of them, three hadn^ver heard about Christ. Biblestudents were sent to interiorareas. This year, we sent two Biblestudents to a place 100km away fromKanpur in the villages. Most ofthem have never heard of Christbefore.

Preaching in Punjab State: Thisyear God has given me a chance topreach in my native state Punjab, the land of the Sikh people. Ipreached t_h,e.r.e thjrice . Many yearsago missionaries started the gospelwork there, but since the missionaries had gone, there were no qualified preachers over there. EvenChristians asked many questions tous about baptism. Holy Spirit,Lord's supper, etc. We will continue to visit them in future. We needone Bible study centre there.

I continue to preach in theSwarupnagar church, though I am nota Pastor of this church and am taking Sunday school at Union school. But our main attention is on youngnon-Christians.

This year God helped me to open

    PSse

    r '.H,

a small office. I am very muchi.^}.,!thankful to God for this. We need'C^" !one more Bible study centre in Kanr' 1pur, about 12km away f romSwarup . -nagar. ^

    ' ; i

We are hoping that our ministrywould be more speedy this year. Themain reason is it is God's will andthe second is also main; that isbrother Ken and me have good understanding to implement His will.

At last I want to say to youlove and thanks for supporting us. 'We assure you that you will see moreresults very soon. Remember us inyour prayers. We love you with : igreat love and warm greetings.

THANK GOD FOR MY INDIAby Ralph Harter t

My India" was the name of JimCorbett s last book, written about1947 after he had moved his residence from India to Africa. I amtalking about the famous tiger hunter and not about the American boxer,of the same name. Fifty years hasmade a great difference between theIndia of Jim Corbett and my Indiaalthough I spend my summers in. JimGorbe^-t country and "r i de the ..ra11 -ways that once employed him.

It was Sunday morning the 3rd ofAugust, 1947 that I reached Bombayon the S . S.Franconia from LiverpoolIt surprises me now to think t-hatnothing surprised me then. I was asnaive as naive could be and thoughtthat everything was just as it wassupposed to be, but it wasn't. Mrs.Rothermel was not there to meet mebecause she had somehow lost a. dayon the train; nor was anyone therefrom the American Express Companybecause it was a Sunday and none oftheir employees worked on Sunday.Being left to my own devices, Iturned all of my luggage over to a

  • Chinese coolie who lied to me thatthe American Express Company hadsent him. Fortunately for me, heturned out to be otherwise honest, taking my luggage to the railwaystation and putting it in safekeeping. It was then that Mrs..Rothermel found me and took me tostay at a nice guest house near thebeacHT ' Several days later, weboarded the Punjab Mail for JhansiJunction, 24 hours to the north.

The'trains of 1947 were comfortable but dirty since they were pulled by coal burning locomotives. Thehistoric Punjab Mail still runs between Bombay & Jhansi and beyond butnow it speeds along with electricand diesel locomotives and there are

^faster trains also. Fares are muchhigher but railway fares in Indiacontinue to be among the world'scheapest and the same can be saidfor air fares. Many trains offerboth air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned coaches. In 1947 theAmerican dollar fetched less thanfour Indian rupees while today itfetches more than 30.

Jhansi station has long boastedof having one of the world's longestrailway platforms. Alighting fromthe Punjab Mail, Mrs. Rothermel andI;^^^ w by horse-drawn tonga, in therain, to the home of a Canadian

Mrs. Rothermel's town of Maudahais double the size it was when Mrs.Rothermel last saw it. A portion ofwhat was the mission compound hasbeen turned into a bus station. Theoversized church building built byFred Smith, Sr. is still in use.

The India of 1947 knew nothingof TV, video, cable, Xerox and fax,all of which are profuse in theIndia of today. "Superfast trainsrun in all directions: 5 hours toDelhi, 1 hour to Lucknow, 12 hoursto Calcutta, 3 hours to Allahabadand 37 hours to Madras. There isalways room for improvement on therailways but they are thriving asnever before. For a price, I cantelephone or send a letter by faxanywhere in the world in the twinkling of an eye. Interesting programs are continuous on cable TV. ^

    KANPUR NEWS

The electrical supply in Indiaremains suspect to say the least.Frequent and prolonged power outagesare the norm in today's Kanpur. Tocombat this, the mission has beenable to purchase a portable generator due to the generosity of some ofour contributors. Church services &bookstore sales can now go on uninterrupted. (Not to mention the refrigerator in our missionaries'apartments.) The next anticipatedmajor purchase is an air-conditionerfor the church Complex. $500 isneeded toward that project.

Please pray for he upcomingIndia Christian Convention to beheld at Kanpur.
