RETURN TO INDIA IN SIGHT

Although a definite date has not yet been set, I am hoping to return to India earlyin August, shortly after the North American Christian Convention in Kansas City. Inthe meantime, I will be visiting Illinois, Missouri, Iowa, Indiana and Ohio. Of summer camps, I am presently scheduled to participate at Lake James School of Missions,Camp Wapakoneta and Round Lake Christian Assembly.

As I write this, I am at home in Clinton, Ohio, for a two-week "Easter Break." During the past three months, I have been romping through Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri-r-Of BJbTe Ct5Heges, I ~\risi^ed tincaln Christian College, Louisville Bible College, College of the Scriptures, Kentucky ChristianCollege, Cincinnati Bible Seminary, Colegio Biblico, Ozark Bible College and CentralChristian College of the Bible. Earlier I had visited Alberta Bible College, GreatLakes Bible College and Roanoke Bible College. Coming up are visits to St. LouisBible College and Iowa Christian College.

Using a phrase of Roy Blackmore's, I touched a lot of bases. I visited a number offriends whom I had not seen for a long, long time.

Dr. Norma Sneed Small of Chekotah, Okla., gave me a quick "medical" and found myblood pressure was ok; no cholesterol, no infection, no anaemia, no sugar; and shecharged me no money. I am not, however, without feeling the effects of long smokybus trips, heavy suitcases, irregular habits, advancing years, increasing weight andnervous tension. Despite the enjoyment of many luxuries, I find my hands tremblingand my ears ringing.

My little typewriter has endured the miles better than I have. Three articles havebeen accepted by CHRISTIAN STANDARD,and another is under-.consideration by RESTORATIONHERALD.

The folk in Kanpur are carrying on very nicely during my absence. The boys in thehome are all reported well and happy. One of the employees, 70 year old Salim, hasbeen in the hospital with a heart ailment. The Kanpur church has had to go tocourt to force registration of the land which they purchased some years ago. JUNE 1982

LEAVING FOR INDIA AUGUST lOTH

The Lord willing in all things, I will be flying out of Philadelphia for India onAugust 10th. On the way, I will visit some former Kanpur residents who are now living inLondon. Following that, I will spend the weekend with Mary Esther Boonearts, daughter ofV/illiam and Jean Roland. Mary Esther and her husband Henki serve the Lord in Belgium.I am scheduled to reach India on August 18th. My air tickets and my visa for India areall irriiand.

And how do I look back on my past year in the U.S.? No doubt there are some mixed emotions, as there always are, but I do believe that it was all in the will of the Lord—andI am satisfied with that. In answer to the prayers of many both in India and the U.S.,God has granted me safe journeys and good health. I must admit to some dissatisfactionwith preachers and churches who did not answer my letters, and with churches who wereafraid to invite me for fear that it would burden their budget. Then there was the losingbattle v/ith calories and the V'^/aist 1 ine.

Since May 2Ath, I have been driving hundreds of miles around northeast Ohio. A lovely'77 Dodge Aspen has been lent to me by Forrest Fuller, a member of the Clinton Church.

During the past several months I have enjoyed some new experiences such as the Dunes ofLake Michigan, the Tulip Festival at Holland, Michigan, the V/orld's Fair at Knoxville,Chicago's "Magnificent Mile," and the grave of "Praying Hyde of India" at Carthage, Mo.For the second time I enjoyed the flowering crab trees of Ann Arbor, Michigan. Just incase you wondered, pleasure excursions are not financed from mission fund.

I may get to see some of you at the North American Christian Convention in Kansas City.I will not have a booth and so you will just have to catch me on the run. After that, Iwill return to Clinton for my final Sunday with the home church on August 1st. OnAugust 8th, I will speak in Harrisburg, Pa., and on the 9th I will visit with Dr. and MrsVictor Rambo in Phily. I wish it v/ere possible to call all of you up on the telephone tosay goodbye.

The news from India is mostly good. The blind boy, Deenanath, is just finished withhis college exams and it v.'i 11 be some time before his grades are known; but there is nodoubt in my mind but that he will pass and get his B.A. degree. Usevius, Sanjai andSushi 1 have all passed. There is a continuing problem with the owner of our house whichis awaiting my return to India.

Two articles of mine were published in the May 23rd andStandard. Extra copies of these articles, asfree from Mrs. Florence Atha, 300 E. Comet Rd.volunteer from the Clinton Church and is not

It does not make any difference to us but for thefor our work in India had best be made out to "Clinton, Ohio First Church of Christ. For India Mission Work, may be noted in the bottom left-hand corner. We cash checksmade out to "Ralph Harter" but we would not recommend that you show your cancelled checkto the IRS. These checks payable to the Clinton Church should still be sent throughFlorence Douglas in Joplin, Mo. The Joplin bank account is the property of the ClintonChurch. The Joplin bank account may eventually be moved to Clinton but we would likefor Miss Douglas to continue as our forwarding agent for as long as God gives her thestrength to do the work.

One more happy memory! My sister Phyllis and I went down to Pittsburgh, Pa. to seeour childhood home in Dormont. We were happy to see that the house is in better shapethan it was when we left it 50 years ago. The neighborhood is still a good neighborhoodalthough the very same houses are still there after half a century with nary a newstructure in sight. We enjoyed riding the trolley as we did when v/e were kids.

THE MANLY VIEW

The names of ladies are particularlynoticable in this financial report. Itdoes seem that much of the mission movement of the 19th and 20th centuries hasdepended on women. It has recently oc-cured to me that one reason for this isthat the ladles take a more spiritualview of missions while the men are stuckon what appears to them to be intelligent and logical. The manly attitudeis to think of missions as ignorance andnonsense. It still remains that our main

concern as missionaries is to do the

will of our father in heaven. Nothingelse matters.

GOD BROUGHT ME BACK AGAIN

Thanks be to our Father in heaven that It was well pleasing In His sight to bring meback safely to India again. The Lufthansa DC-10 winging me from Frankfort touched downin Delhi right on time, 5 a.m. on a very hot and muggy Wednesday August l8th. I spentthree days in New Delhi partly recovering from Jet lag, then came on jto Kanpur byjlxalnon Saturday August 21st. My visits to England and Belgium went well and I preached InBelgium on Sunday morning August 15th.

All in all, I believe that my American Sabbatical proceeded in the will of the Lord.My purpose was to give and not to take, and many people told me that they were spiritually helped by my visit. In return, everyone gave generously. I did not seek that gene-osity but the Lord had His purpose in it. During the next two weeks we will be makingsome very important decisions which may be expensive.

We are going to have to vacate at least half of the house in which we are living andwe may vacate it altogether. Different possibilities are being considered. This willnecessitate making some new arrangement for the book store. V/hatever is decided,I amsure that the end result will be beautiful.

I thoroughly enjoyed the North American Christian Convention at Kansas City althoughI found out that it is no place to visit with your friends. Some of you were there andI didn't see you at all. I rode the 800 miles to Kansas City with Norman and NormaMaynard of the Clinton Church, and I returned to Ohio with Kevin Crago and the BibleBowl team of the Manchester Church.

Thanks.to Forrest Fuller of Forrest Motors, Akron, Ohio, I had the use of a good usedcar for two months toward the end of my furlough. I was shaky at first but by thesecond thousand miles I was catching on. I drove on the Ohio Turnpike and Interstatesof different numbers. Thanks again, Forrest, for the fun I had. If anyone is in themarket for a used car, I recommend our brother Forrest.'The August 22nd issue of CHRISTIAN STANDARD contained my article, "Oh to be Truly Hungry." Louise Rambo received her copy on the morning before I was to eat supper at herhouse, so you can imagine that she read it hurriedly. The supper was delicious. Hopefully to appear soon are "Up the Back Staircase," and Hindu is a Six Letter Word."

New experiences included visiting the birthplace and other museums of Milan, Ohio, andthe home of Rutherford B. Hayes in Fremont, Ohio. Downtown Philadelphia is one of themost interesting and cheapest places in the world to shop. The twelve hour bus ride fromBuffalo to Harrisburg was long but beautiful.

The rainy season is in full swing here in north India and there are floods betweenhere and Kulpahar with roads inundated and scores of vehicles stuck in the mud. At thesame time there is a shortage of water being supplied to us in the city of Kanpurthrough the pipes.

I am proud of our blind boy Deenanath who seems to be making progress both spirituallyand educationally. Sani Masih did fairly well in managing the household during my absence. The performances of the other staff members were not particularly remarkable but they didalright. Hari the cook and Salim the caretaker have both been sick.

And now for the worse news. Twp of the younger boys have been indulging in some heavystealing. It doesn't hurt their conscience to steal from a blind man in order to gambleand buy lottery tickets. A third boy has also not applied himself properly to his studieswhich is unfortunately the way with most Indian Christian boys.

I have been appointed to write a short play for the centennary of D. E. Stanley Jones.Other plans include having a commemorative postage stamp issued by the government of India, and having a road in the mountains named after him.

Harter's Law Regarding Jetlag: The body cannot normally tolerate the traversing of morethan one time zone in one day. If you do, count on one day of Jetlag for each extra timezone you cross. From New York to New Delhi, you cross ten time zones and so it will takeyour body nine days to adapt to it. That means that if you come on a ten day tour of India, you are Just beginning to adapt when it is time to go back again. It is easy to figurethese things out when you are only sleeping every third night.

Thanks again to all of you who made my furlough so happy and successful. Cousin Mary andher husband Chuck who made their home my home; the Maynards and all the members of theClinton Church; the staff of the Clinton postoffice; all the Clinton townspeople who stillown me as one of their own; Mabel Jeffries for her secretarial help; Florence Douglas,Florence Atha, Almonta Markwood and many others whose rewards await them in heaven.

SOME MISADVENTURES

next door to us died after a

/ Among my things stolen washave been thinking of arpwinq

On October 13th, I was up in the liills delivering a mimeograph machineto the Sat Tal Christian Ashram when at 7:15 p.m.,while 1 was in anotherbuilding correcting a proof,a thief broke into my room and stole much of

f/what I had v^ith me on the trip. The l.oss was sufferable but the thief11 took my Registration papers and for that reason I had to report theII matter to the police. The burglar also took our financial report forf l^September and some addressed postcards by which it is possible that some^ of you could be contacted by unsocial elements. If any of you receive

any suspicious correspondence from India, I would appreciate hearingabout it.

^On August 29thwhen I was coming home from church on n3y_^cooter, Igot_ knocked down by a water buffalo. I happily escaped any serious in-

(i-" jury but a few small souvenirs of the encounter still remain. Our cook, Hari, has been on "Sick Leave" for more than two months, and

Salim, the custodian, is suffering from a chronic heart condition thatlimits his activity. His moods also sometimes present problems to us.At the moment he is in a good mood but vje are watching our step. Salimhas been a very honest, faithful and hard working man.

y/ Sani Masih vjho stays here lost his father, Mangi, Masih of Ragaul ,^early in October. Mangi worked for Mrs^ Rothermal in the olden days,^ sometimes as cook and sometimes as gardner. He liked to joke and was

always good for laughs. Our house owner lost his younger brother whowas a very good friend of mine. Four days before he died vje enjoyed aIj hour visit with each other. The great-grandmother (Hindu) livingnext door to us died after a long Illness.

/ Among my things stolen was my electric shaver. For several years I^ have been thinking of .grpwing a beard and now I am pursuing It, scratch,/ scratch. Thirty years ago 1 had a beard that looked pretty good.

y / I am aiming to vagate the back half of our house by Dec. 31.st at they^latest, and then I wl11 see about the front of the house. I am selling// some of our less used possess ions, and I want to merge our bookstore with

/ one downtown; but the downtown store also has its problems and is not in/ [ an immediate position to absorb us. After the merger, I want to continue\ wi th a Bible Study Centre v;herever 1 happen to reside.

For the time being, 1 get the impression that the Lord wants me tojjstay in Jianpur and not move anywhere else. I had an idea of returning

; to Hamirpur from whence I came In 1952, but the church members there/ are engaged in a court case with the pastor. Several have urged me to

/ move to the Sat Tal Ashram but I don't see much challenge there atI this time. I may decide to spend more time there during the summer.I

keep trying to find an easy viay to travel from here to there but iteludes me.

During September, I wrote.-J:hr.ee, pamphlets and sent them to three different printers. The printers do^h't knov/ it but they are in a contest.I have been correcting proofs for tv/o of the pamphlets but the thirdhas not been heard from. It. could be that much of my future ministrywill be in the publication of_pamphle,ts in English and Hindi.

Now for the boys^: ""i When I last wrote, 1 was under the impression thatUsevius (Kuku) was in school across the state. As it was, he had beengiven new clothes and the money for his train ticket but he never lefttown. He has a small job downtown given to him by our next door neighbor, and he Is living with his sister; so that turned out about as goodas could be expected for a kid who v;as so far behind in school. He andhis mother still come to church, and he often visits here at the house. His mother seems to have given up some of her beggarly habits. Sani, and the rest of us, have had some problems v/ith his boy Sanjai who has

V a weakness for stealing and lying. We like to think that v;e are mak-'^ing some progress with him. Sanjai's mother lives in Bareilly but is

sometimes seen In Kanpur with her paramour. Divorce proceedings arein progress.

peenanath, the blind boy, received his B.A.degree with top marks, andhe fi" now working on his M.A. degree. The other boy living here, SushilLewis, has a good character and a sv^eet and helpful temperment; but heis not very smart at books. We are thinking that next year we may sendhim for a training course in automotive mechanics.

Another very generous contribution gaveus more sorrow than joy because it signalled the .4&?^se of an old friend, theCentral Christian Church of East Orange,N.J. THls v-jas a historical church~which

ave much help to missionaries In the olddays when missionaries used to travel byboat. The $^18^ which they have sent ushas been handed over to the building fundof the Swarupnagar (Kanpur) Church.

A new item in our list of expenditures,"Kanpur Work through Kulpahar," ushers ina new era of cooperation with the KulpaharMission. The purpose of this is to gradually decrease the liabilities of the Kanpur committee shown as the Kalisiya Saha-yak Sanstha. We may even be able to dismantle the K.S.S. completely by Dec. '81^,that is, my sixtieth birthday.

In our last nev^sletter we suggested thatwe might use the $500 from the Pate Memorial Fund for a nev7 refrigerator. That proved to be unnecessary and we have used themoney instead to repair the bookstoredowntown. I will have the old frig painted
