Marking the passage of me or distance is
an important part of making a journey. The
Ancient Romans marked their roads with
milestones, similar to the road markers of
today. In World War II a significant event was
the Ba le of Midway Island, in which we prevailed and
gained a giant foothold on our march to Japan. Today marks
the midpoint of Lent. On this Third Sunday a great challenge
is given to us in the Parable of the Fig Tree. The story is
simple and to the point. The owner of the fig tree has waited
for it to bear fruit for 3 years. At this point in the tree’s life
cycle it should be producing. There is no fruit and the owner
wants to cut down the worthless tree. His employee, the
vinedresser, convinces him to hoe and manure it and give it
one more year to produce; and if there is s ll no fruit, then
he will personally cut it down.
The Fig Tree is symbolic of our call to bear the fruit of prayer,
fas ng and works of charity during our Lenten journey. We
are now half way to Easter. God waits like the owner of the
fig tree. We have been given a li le more me to bear fruit
before Easter. If we haven’t go en into the spirit of things
“Now is the me.” The owner of the tree is pa ent and will
con nue to give his help, not manure and hoeing, but the
ever present Holy Spirit. Half way to Easter let us strive to
bear the fruit of faith, hope and love.
God be with you on the Journey,
Deacon Steve

2 The Journey of the Elect - la Jornada de los Elegidos

On the First Sunday of Lent, those preparing for Bap sm
par cipated in the Rite of Elec on. Adults were present-
ed to Bishop Barnes while teens and older children were
presented to Deacon Steve and Fr Hau. Before Bishop
Barnes, their sponsors and catechists tes fied that they
have been studying and par cipa ng in the life of the
community, and that God has chosen them to be one of
us, the bap zed. They signed their names into the
Book of the Elect and Bishop Barnes declared that they
are elected for bap sm, chosen to be God’s own in
Christ Jesus. The newly Elect were beaming!
Bishop Barnes gave an encouraging homily about being
in the desert of Lent with Jesus. Our diocesan shepherd
encouraged us to “Be not afraid of the desert; for Christ
is there with us.” This is especially meaningful to those
who have elected to con nue this journey towards
Bap sm. Now, they have entered into the Period of
Purifica on and Enlightenment, a me of deep prayer
for perseverance as they draw closer to full ini a on
at the Easter Vigil.
God chooses us, elects us, in Christ, to be a holy people,
to be a church, to be signs of the reign of God on earth.
Let us encourage our Elect and hold them in prayer
throughout our Lenten journey.
Monica Aguilar Director of R.C.I.A., Adult and Youth Confirma on
nuevos elegidos estaban radiantes!
Animemos a nuestros

Message of Divine Mercy “I am love and mercy itself… Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even
though its sins be as scarlet… My mercy is greater than your sins, and those
of the en re world. I let my Sacred Heart be pierced with a lance, thus
opening wide the source of mercy for you. Come then with trust to draw
graces from this fountain… the graces of My mercy are drawn by the means
of one vessel only, and that is trust. The more a soul trusts, the more it will
receive.” -Jesus to St. Faus na Kowalska from her Diary, #s 1074, 699, 1585, 1578

The Dominican Friars of the Central Province are the caretakers of a relic of the Apostle, St Jude Thaddeus. The relic is displayed at the Shrine of St. Jude in Chicago. It is reportedly the largest relic of an Apostle located out-side of Europe. (for more info, visit: www.the-shrine.org )
Venerating the relics of saints is a beautiful practice that brings us close to those who walked before us in the sign of faith. They “ran the race” and reached the end goal of Heaven. This is an opportunity to raise our hearts and minds to God and invoke the intercession of St Jude as we strive for sanc ty. For more informa on or ques ons, please contact Guenter and Wendy Posjena 909-792-1507. We are thankful to Guenter and Wendy and the Dominican Friars for offering this opportunity to our parish!

We began the season of Lent by a ending
our first mee ng with the City of Red-
lands. We discussed the various studies
required like Traffic Flow and Impact, Air
Quality and Greenhouse Gases, Cultural
Anthropology, Noise Projec on, and Environmental Im-
pact. Some were completed a few years ago and only
require minor upda ng. Last week, we signed contracts
for the studies for the others; this will be paid for out of
the Building Fund, which is restricted for this purpose.
The good news is that the City’s ques ons were minimal
and we are moving forward with the process. We an ci-
pate comple ng the required studies and mee ng with
the City Planning Commission within a couple of
months. It will probably take about a year to complete
the approval process; part of which includes a public
hearing with the City Council.
We are hoping that we can pull building permits at this
me next year… that depends on whether or not we will
finish raising the necessary funds. We are grateful to
have enough funding to start the building project, and,
we sincerely thank all of you who have contributed.
But, starting the project is only the beginning. We are
called to build a sacred space that welcomes all peoples,
that places Christ at the center of our community life,
and that proclaims our Catholic faith to the world.
It is the vision of the complete campus — not the spade
in the ground — that inspires us to share our plans with
donors who have the capacity to make a significant gi .
The profound trust of those who have made significant
commitments, and, the willing spirits of those who are
exploring op ons like dona ng un-needed life insurance
policies or real estate, propel us towards that final vision.
Let us not forget that we believe in the God who num-
bers Abraham’s descendants like the stars in the sky and
who revealed His transformed and holy presence to the
apostles on the mountain top. This is the One who calls
us to build in this time and in this place. Please pray that those with significant means respond
generously to God’s call and step up to make this
vision a reality.
Blessings, Deacon Steve

completaron hace unos años y solo requieren actualizaciones
menores.

Have you made your plans for the summer?
Whispering Winds Family Camp is calling you.
Three days up on the mountain top,
with oh so much to do.
Speakers for the parents,
special programs for each age,
God’s love and His encouragement
will be present at every stage.
Stars at night, a campfire bright,
songs of praise and glory.
Come join us there with love to share
and hear the rest of the story.
Our family has enjoyed
spending summers at
Whispering Winds
Catholic Family Camp
for years!
We would love to share
about our experiences
with you, and we can
help you register, too.
