The language of love is the only language all
people understand. One of our 6th century
Christians wrote, “True disciples speak in a
language of love.” At Pentecost, the Holy Spirit
is given to all the members of the Church. God
chose to dwell in our hearts in order to be the presence of Love
in the world. It is this Love that will bring the Church, united by
the Holy Spirit, can speak the language of every people, in the
language of love. We are to be an instrument of divine love—
a messenger of Good News— a person of hope in the world.
The majority of us lead quiet, unheralded lives as we pass
through the world. There will most likely be no tickertape
parades for us, no monuments created in our honor. But that
does not lessen the possible impact upon the world, for there
are scores of people waiting for someone just like us to come
along: people who will appreciate our compassion, our
encouragement, who will need our unique talents. Someone
will live a happier life merely because we took the time to
share what we had to give. Too often we under estimate the
power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an
honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring— all of which
have the potential to turn lives around. It’s overwhelming to
consider the continuous opportunities there are to make love
felt. May today find us sharing deeply and lovingly in the gifts
of the Holy Spirit,
Deacon Steve

Manifesting the Spirit
A few years ago, when we celebrated Easter Sunday at the University of Redlands, I entered a small
room above the chapel to see if Bishop Barnes needed water or anything while he rested between Masses.
As I entered the “upper room”, Bishop greeted me with a smile saying, “Are you the One we have been
wai ng for… the manifesta on of the Holy Spirit?” Needless to say, his wi y remark caught me off
guard; and, we definitely enjoyed a hearty laugh together!
Bishop’s light-hearted ques on is a good one for each of us on Pentecost as we consider the mighty power of the Holy
Spirit at work giving birth to and sustaining our Church. Why? Because the same Spirit is calling to us this day to take up
our part in the Church’s saving work. We know this from the readings today.
In Acts, we see the crea ve genius of the Holy Spirit moving through the newly confirmed Apostles “who began to speak
in different tongues as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.” The large crowd, gathered from all over the world were
“amazed” and “astounded” that each one could understand the Apostles speaking in their own language.
Each one of us, young and old alike, is personally called today by the Holy Spirit into the same mission as that of the first
Apostles — to advance the Kingdom of God in our corner of the world. Just like that Pentecost day, the Holy Spirit
speaks to us in our “own language” to give us the Good News of the Gospel and urge us to share it. We can think of our
own language as the par cular gi s, talents and passions we possess. We experience the presence of the Holy Spirit
through them and we are meant put them to the work in grateful service of the Kingdom of God.
When we consider the stewardship way of life we are called to live, we o en focus on the challenges it poses. Surren-
dering ourselves to God and sharing our Time, Talents, and Treasure to bring about His Kingdom is indeed a challenging
way to live. Jesus knew that we would need help to overcome our challenges, which is why He sent the Holy Spirit — to
give us: Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, For tude, Knowledge, Piety, and Fear (awe) of the Lord. The generosity of
God just knows no bounds… first, He dies for us; and then, he sends us an Advocate with specific gi s to help us. WOW!
It is important to name our challenges. But, we must move beyond them to bear
fruit in Christ’s Holy Name. When was the last me you asked the Holy Spirit to
show you the way beyond a specific challenge?
Mine was in wri ng this column.
Living as a Chris an Steward leads to a life that is exci ng, crea ve and deeply
rewarding. Stewardship allows us to experience life as a great adventure because
it is a life guided and directed by the very source of power and crea vity— the
Holy Spirit!
Who knows? Maybe someone will then ask you, “Are you One we’ve been
wai ng for… the manifesta on of the Holy Spirit?”
We can build the kingdom. We really can.

Why do we fill up the seats in church from the back to the front? Maybe it’s piety: We sit in the back because, aware of
our many failings, we don’t feel worthy to draw near. Maybe it’s culture: We sit in the back because our mothers taught us
never to claim the best seats or make ourselves the center of attention. Maybe it’s selfish: We want to be able to skip out
early. Whatever the reason, it causes a prac cal problem: The front seats are always empty, crea ng a gulf between the
Lord’s table and the Lord’s people. And latecomers stand in the back rather than march up to the front where everyone can
see that they’re late.
Let’s show some hospitality here! Let’s fill the church up from the front to the back, leaving the back rows for those who
come later or late. And let’s fill each row from the center: If you’re the first one in a row, don’t hug the end (unless you’re a
minister and will need to get in and out). Move into the middle so that others may come and sit beside you.
Filling in the front seats first isn’t proud or arrogant. It’s part of the ministry of hospitality that all of us who are bap zed are
called to exercise. It’s a simple act of kindness that helps the church to gather be er around its Lord, so that we may give
God thanks and praise. © 2009 World Library Publica ons
