end of this week that the oval will be open for students to use next week! I know the

students are very excited to be able to use the oval again. We will have a timetable for

Each parent of a student at the school is eligible to vote unless they are a DET employee who is working at, and for, the school.

Statements from each of the candidates were emailed yesterday to all families (and will also be placed on the school website under Publications>Notices>School Council Election Information) to assist you with your voting decision.

Positive Play Awards It is fantastic to see so many students being identified as displaying positive play. Each week the house with the most points will be announced and an individual winner identified. The individual winner will receive a book which has kindly been donated by PFA. Thank you. Forms have been sent home and were due back Tuesday 28th February. Please ensure your form has been returned to enable you child to participate. Incursion On Friday the 24th of March we have a visiting production coming to present their show to the students from Prep to Grade 6. Permission notes with details will be sent home soon. Cost will be $5.00 per student. Congratulations to all students and staff on working so hard in the first few weeks of the year. Thank you for the support

SCHOOL PHOTO DAY—NEXT MONDAY 6TH MARCH Personal order forms were distributed this week. Please do not lose these as they are

specific to your child.

All orders placed online by midnight on photo day will receive a free 20cm x 25cm black and white portrait print.

PHOTO DAY TIPS: Dress: We would like to remind families that students are required to be in full school uniform. Footwear: Students may wear traditional black school shoes or standard ‘runners’ coloured white, black or blue (apart from small logo). Skate shoes or converse style ‘runners’ are not permitted. Shoelaces must be either white, black or blue in line with shoe colouring. Hair: Long hair should be TIED BACK with either blue, black or white accessories in line with our uniform policy. A MESSAGE FROM OUR SCHOOL CAPTAINS Hello, I’m Rue and I am your 2017 School Captain. I have had six great years at Gisborne Primary , and feel both honoured and privileged to be spending my last year proudly representing our school. Over the years I have been fortunate to represent my grade as a Junior School Council member for 3 years and Class Captain 5 times. I also enjoyed representing Gisborne Primary in Division Athletics and District Netball, Softball and Cross Country. I enjoy listening and talking with people and have many interests. My favourite activities are playing piano, painting art, reading, cricket, netball and travelling to name a few. I am excited about this year and look forward to what lies ahead. I can’t promise rainbows and unicorns, but I will use all my might to make our school the best it can be, making this year the best ever! Rue Hello students, teachers and parents, my name is Isaac and I am from class 6B. I live on a 10 acre farm in a family of 4. I also have some 4-legged family, a dog and 7 alpacas—Junior, Casper, Shadow, Carmen, Puddy, Storm and Lily. I enjoy playing soccer at school and home on the rough grass. I like to play basketball at school and I’ve been playing indoor soccer for a couple of years. For the first week of being School Captain I have enjoyed working with fellow school captains and teachers to achieve goals. I got a new bike for Christmas and enjoy riding it to build up my stamina. That’s pretty much it about me, thanks for reading this and I hope you enjoy the rest of the school year. Isaac

SCHOOL COUNCIL REPORT On 15th February, the GPS School council met for the first time in 2017. It was a good meeting with many exciting agenda items and updates. The team were able to finalise the sub-program budgets and work through some of the issues that had cropped up over the holiday period. We would like to thank those parents, friends and students that helped with the weeding day prior to school returning. The school is looking much better for it. The oval is looking good, with the late onset of summer delaying the release for use, but it will be worth the effort in the end. Our next meeting is the annual general meeting that starts at 7:00pm for all interested parties that would like to attend; a standard school council meeting follows this. LITERACY COACHING Dear Families, This year I am working each Friday as Literacy coach for Gisborne Primary School. Term One has been very busy, setting up and organising resources for classrooms, professional development in the area of spelling for new staff and establishing our literacy support programs. Kay Thomas is running literacy support groups and individual tutoring, for various students across the school. The programs are specifically tailored for students who are struggling to read and comprehend text. Below is some further information about these programs: Reading Tutor Program The Reading Tutor Program is a special teaching program designed for students from Years 3 up, who are struggling to learn to read. The program is delivered on a one-to-one basis for approximately forty minutes, four days per week. During these sessions students work on: Word Attack Skills (phonics), Sight Words and Reinforced Reading. MiniLit MiniLit is a program designed for young children in Years 1 and 2 who are struggling to learn to read. The program involves students working in small groups of four children, to help them catch up to their classmates. These sessions run for one hour, four days per week. Each lesson has three main components: Sound and Word activities, Text Reading and Story Book Reading. A major part of my role will be supporting staff in the classroom, to assist with the teaching and learning of Literacy at Gisborne Primary School. I’m looking forward to working in classrooms as a coach this year and supporting our budding readers and writers. Melanie Hunter

Here is a very small sample of the gorgeous owls, frogs and giraffes the Grade 1 and 2 students made last week in art. The aim was to use line, pattern and texture in their drawings and then create secondary colours from primary liquid watercolour paint to colour their designs. Be sure to take a stroll past our gallery outside the art room too, displays change regularly so you never know what you might find! PRETTY PLEASE…… If you have any old newspapers (not junk mail), washed meat/styrofoam trays, or any bits of coloured wool laying around, I would greatly appreciate any you can spare for future art lessons. NATIONAL RIDE2SCHOOL/ACTIVE TRAVEL DAY Preparations are well under way for National Ride2School and Active Travel Day on Friday March 17. We will celebrate riding, walking, skating and scooting as fun ways to travel and investigate how people in our school travel to school. We support our students to walk or wheel to school because:

Students feel fresh and alert at the beginning of a school day. There are fewer cars around the school which eases ‘drop off congestion’. Students are more likely to reach the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity they need each day. Students feel happier, healthier and perform better in the classroom.

If you live too far away to walk or wheel the whole way to school, start thinking about a place you could drive to and then walk or wheel the rest of the way....Part Way is OK!!

EASTER RAFFLE The PFA’s major fundraiser for Term 1 will be an Easter Raffle. We are asking each family to kindly donate an Easter egg or Easter item toward the raffle by the 24th March. Donations can be left at the school office. Raffle tickets will be sent home to families in the coming weeks. Thank you to those families who have already donated! The raffle will be drawn at a special assembly to be held on the last day of Term 1, Friday 31st March

MULCH SPREADING VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

We are hoping to have a large delivery of mulch for the area on the retaining wall behind the oval very soon. Once the mulch has arrived we will be calling for volunteers to help spread it so please keep an eye out for more details.
