One of our discussions was about how/if we need further feedback from families around how they are managing the online learning environment. Situaons and issues will vary across the school with the different ages and learning challenges of our students. Your childrens teachers will be best placed to get feedback from you about how you are finding the home/ school learning partnership, what you are learning about your childs learning strengths and challenges and the posive strategies you will take from this me to your future partnership in your child s educaon. Some parents have also been emailing me and I value these communicaons and welcome your feedback. Students are also giving teachers feedback about how the learning is working for them. School Council has approved the 2019 Annual Report and it has been submied to the Department. The report is available on the website for parents to peruse. The Annual Report provides an overview of our teaching, learning, engagement and wellbeing priories in 2019 and broad results of school based tesng and data including NAPLAN tests, Atudes to School, Parent and Staff Opinion Surveys. Family Payment invoices have been sent this week. Please contact me or the office to discuss support, if your financial situaon has changed in the current economic situaon. Remote and Flexible Learning Updates during the COVID – 19 Pandemic In this weeks media, Federal Educaon Minister Dan Tehan has outlined hopes that all schools will be fully re-opened by the end of May. However, the Victorian government connues to tread its own path in regards to re-opening schools before the end of term. Therefore I can only restate that at this me, there will be limited on-site provision unl the end of Term 2. The majority of our students are engaged in remote learning, with 35-45 students on-site each day and about 90 students being supported overall, most for 2-3 days per week. We appreciate the GPS familiescommitment to supporng that 'all students who can learn from home must learn from home.' We will wait for the next set of direcons, possibly on the 11 th of May. There are daily updates from DET to principals for communicang to school communies as needed. When these apply to our school, I will send to parents via the newsleer or by email if more urgent. School Review and areas of focus for 2020 that are relevant to Home/Remote Learning Interesngly these were the findings in our school review and the work we were to focus on in 2020. All of these elements will be enhanced by students learning remotely and being responsible for their learning. We know many of you are working from home. Ensure your children are building their independence to manage their daily tasks. Students proacvely using resources, self-regulaon and agency to sustain and improve their learning – encourage your child to use their resources, not just you, to complete tasks. Connued focus on building vocabulary through Oral Language to improve the quality of wring and enhanced speaking skills. (Talk about words, use word lists and encourage an extensive vocabulary.) Students self- regulang and taking responsibility for regular reading and achieving their reading goals. Students building organisaonal skills through the use of their diaries. Students building persistence and resilience in their learning to increase their stamina to sustain 30-40 minutes of independent wring or the compleon of other tasks requiring deeper thinking. PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Dear Families,

Family Payment, School Council and Annual Report We had our school council meeting via WebEx last night. One of our discussions was about how/if we need further feedback from families around how they are managing the online learning environment. Situations and issues will vary across the school with the different ages and learning challenges of our students. Your children’s teachers will be best placed to get feedback from you about how you are finding the home/school learning partnership, what you are learning about your child’s learning strengths and challenges and the positive strategies you will take from this time to your future partnership in your child’s education. Some parents have also been emailing me and I value these communications and welcome your feedback. Students are also giving teachers feedback about how the learning is working for them. School Council has approved the 2019 Annual Report and it has been submitted to the Department. The report is available on the website for parents to peruse. The Annual Report provides an overview of our teaching, learning, engagement and wellbeing priorities in 2019 and broad results of school based testing and data including NAPLAN tests, Attitudes to School, Parent and Staff Opinion Surveys. Family Payment invoices have been sent this week. Please contact me or the office to discuss support, if your financial situation has changed in the current economic situation.

Remote and Flexible Learning Updates during the COVID – 19 Pandemic In this week’s media, Federal Education Minister Dan Tehan has outlined hopes that all schools will be fully re-opened by the end of May. However, the Victorian government continues to tread its own path in regards to re-opening schools before the end of term. Therefore I can only restate that at this time, there will be limited on-site provision until the end of Term 2. The majority of our students are engaged in remote learning, with 35-45 students on-site each day and about 90 students being supported overall, most for 2-3 days per week. We appreciate the GPS families’ commitment to supporting that 'all students who can learn from home must learn from home.' We will wait for the next set of directions, possibly on the 11th of May. There are daily updates from DET to principals for communicating to school communities as needed. When these apply to our school, I will send to parents via the newsletter or by email if more urgent.

School Review and areas of focus for 2020 that are relevant to Home/Remote Learning Interestingly these were the findings in our school review and the work we were to focus on in 2020. All of these elements will be enhanced by students learning remotely and being responsible for their learning. We know many of you are working from home. Ensure your children are building their independence to manage their daily tasks.

□ Students proactively using resources, self-regulation and agency to sustain and improve their

learning – encourage your child to use their resources, not just you, to complete tasks.

□ Continued focus on building vocabulary through Oral Language to improve the quality of writing and

enhanced speaking skills. (Talk about words, use word lists and encourage an extensive vocabulary.)

□ Students self- regulating and taking responsibility for regular reading and achieving their reading goals.

□ Students building organisational skills through the use of their diaries.

□ Students building persistence and resilience in their learning to increase their stamina to sustain 30-40

minutes of independent writing or the completion of other tasks requiring deeper thinking.

Best wishes for the coming week of home learning.

MESSAGE FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL

Caring Hearts, Caring Minds, Caring Actions

By now, you would have set up a routine at home to support your child/ren while learning from

home. We understand, depending on your own family situation, this can be very challenging

and we thank you for working with the school during this time. Hopefully, depending on their

age, your child is becoming more independent and getting themselves ready for the day, trying

to problem solve on their own and making attempts at their work.

The next step could be to have a regular check in with your child/ren at the start and end of the

day to discuss their learning and progress. Depending on your child’s age, these could include

questions such as:

Morning check in

In the morning, ask:

What are you learning today?

Do you have a learning goal? Tell me about it.

Have you got everything you need?

What are some strategies you could use to work

out a problem you may have? Eg. Re read, look

through the information provided.

What support do you need?

Afternoon check-in

In the afternoon, ask:

What did you learn today?

What was challenging? You could come up with a way to deal with the same problem if it

comes up again.

Can you tell me three things that went well today? Why were they good?

Are you ok? Do you need help with something to make tomorrow more successful?

These questions allow your child to:

process the instructions they get from their teachers

help them organise themselves and set priorities

Think through problems themselves and make attempts to solve them independently

You could also check-in with your child throughout the day depending on your child’s needs

and age.

Remember to be kind to yourselves. If you are trying to juggle work, children and the household,

please concentrate on the literacy and numeracy tasks first and complete the other tasks at

times that suit your family. Please continue to speak with your classroom teacher as needed as

they are a great support.

Please see the following link to the Education Department for further support and advice:

Kind regards, Lisa Maxwell

KITCHEN GARDEN WEEK 3

DID YOU KNOW…..A 600mL bottle of soft drink has around 16 teaspoons of sugar! This large amount of sugar

has no nutritional benefit and can result in tooth decay and other risk factors for serious health issues. Swap sugary drinks for water or milk.

Home Learning from Across the School

Children have sent in the following items from home to share with us

2A Ways that we can be resilient when learning from home

3A Have been learning how to write a procedural text. Some very handy instructions for “how to paint a room” (SOUNDS LIKE HARD WORK!), “toasting marshmallows” (YUM), and how to do a “water colour painting of a tree” (EASY DOES IT). Have a go at these.

5A have shared some writing pieces ~ see our amazing work below:

Home Learning – By Tyler Evans (5A) Hi my name is Tyler Evans and I am 11 years old. I have been enjoying the past few weeks, it's been fun doing school at home. I like it because I can still see my parents and that means they can see me. But I still miss school, it's really rare for me to admit that but I do. I miss my friends and I hope I can see them soon. I can still see them when I FaceTime them but that's not actually seeing them in person.

I can still go for walks, jogs and go for runs but I can't have sleepovers and go to parks, shops, family and especially school. But I can still stop myself from getting bored. My family and I go out and roast marshmallows, have bonfires and play on the iPads and PlayStation. But my feelings inside are kind of sad, because I don't get to see my friends and everyone else I care for.

But there's something I'm starting to notice. I'm starting to notice that we are going to have to pay more money for the internet. What's the same is we all still do work.

More great learning from students at home……

Descriptive writing By Stella McDonald (5A)

The smoke seeps into the car the light is the roaring fires in the distance, as we race out of Narooma as I quietly sob. I’m so scared the only thing you can hear is the engine half full of petrol. It’s boiling hot and everyone is sweating but you can’t put the windows down because the smoke will invade the car. Nothing to do and nothing to see but burning trees and fire, I started to get goose bumps, people start to panic it’s very eerie.
