There is a new version of the survey in 2017; it seeks parent opinion on measures of school climate, student engagement, relaonships with the parent community and effecve teaching pracce known to influence student engagement and student outcomes. This will assist the school in gaining an understanding of parentspercepons to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement strategies. The 2017 survey will be conducted online by ORIMA Research Pty Ltd and only takes 15 minutes to complete. It can be accessed via desktop computer, laptop, tablet or mobile connected to the internet at any convenient me within the fieldwork period from Monday 7 August to Sunday 27 August. The survey is administered from a secure online survey portal. Parents are randomly selected through our student management program. The unique school survey link will be distributed to the random sample of parents selected to complete the survey. All responses are anonymous. Please take the me to complete the survey as we value your opinion. Teaching and Learning On Monday and Tuesday, I aended the DET Professional Learning Communies pilot program workshop in Bendigo with three of our teachers—Caitlin Wilkinson, Mel Hunter and Laura Lopes- Vieira. The main aim of this project—one of the biggest in the history of DET—is to support schools and teachers to work in teams to improve studentslearning. Teams analyse studentswork samples and data to find areas needing improvement and work together to learn the best teaching strategies to do this effecvely for every child. Work has already started with the year level leaders and professional learning for all teachers will connue over this semester. Numeracy in Semester 2: There are four competencies that lead to students being able to apply their numeracy skills in everyday life and work situaons. Proficiency in understanding, reasoning, problem solving and fluency ensure we can use our maths skills confidently and efficiently in a range of situaons. This term we will also be monitoring the studentslevel of speed and accuracy with their fluency skills on a range number facts, tables and measurement facts appropriate for each year level to improve the speed and accuracy of their maths work. Home/School partnership: Much of the work in our maths lessons at school is around teaching the understanding of concepts, applying prior knowledge, esmaon and checking strategies to judge the reasonableness of calculaons and applying all of these skills to accurately solve problems. Students pracse their fluency skills in warm-up and revision acvies for about 5-10 minutes of every maths lesson. You can make a valuable contribuon to the home/school partnership by encouraging 3-5 minutes of pracce daily with your child (eg in the car) to improve the automac recall of the number facts and tables that are expected at your child s year level. Ask your child what set of facts they are currently working on (only 3-4, not the whole set). If your child has an auditory memory or processing issue, talk to his/her class teacher about other strategies to support their fluency as automac recall of tables facts will be more difficult. Hope you have had a good week. Julie Souer

Dear Families Firstly I would like to acknowledge the fabulous job our four school captains are doing with organising and running assembly each week Their maturity and confidence shines through and both Julie and I appreciate all of their hard work

Thank you to the PFA who organised and ran an enjoyable comedy show on Saturday There were many families who attended The raffle was a great success with many prizes Thank you to the people who donated prizes as well as the many families who supported the school through the purchase of tickets We are very fortunate at Gisborne PS to have supportive and generous families

A reminder for all families that the first school bell goes at 850am which indicates to students that they should move to their classrooms and get organised for the day The next bell goes at 855am which is the time for students to be ready for learning The first two hours of the day can be the most productive learning time It would be greatly appreciated if parents could please have their children at school prior to the 850am bell to ensure students are ready for learning

Teachers and students have been discussing Bully Stoppers in their classrooms with excellent feedback and strategies being displayed There are many classrooms with displays and work samples

Tomorrow we are recognising Jeans for Genes day with students given the opportunity to wear a pair of jeans Students are asked to wear their school uniform shirt and jumper and are invited to donate a gold coin towards the cause Thank you for your support

We currently have a confirmed case of influenza in the school and we have been advised that there are cases of chickenpox in the Gisborne community at the moment however as yet there have been no cases at school

Should your child have an infectious disease (such as the measles chickenpox or influenza) your child should stay at home until no longer contagious and we ask that you DO NOT BRING THEM INTO THE SCHOOL GROUNDS and please notify the school office immediately

For more information about how long an illness is contagious contact your GP or visit the Vic Department of Health website at www2healthvicgovau

Congratulations to the following students who were observed displaying positive behaviours including

our school values over the last week

UNWELL CHILDREN You may be aware that our school currently has a student who has been receiving medical treatment for cancer and is recovering from treatments and their side effects As this student has a compromised immune system and is more vulnerable to disease it is important that you do not send your children to school if they are unwell (gastro colds high temperature etc)

We appreciate your cooperation Please do not hesitate to contact the school should you have any questions

Multiculturalism and Friendship reflections from 1B I think the tree is life We are all different can like everyone Claire

I think the tree is about friendship happiness and love William

The good tree of friendship shows life People have different sized hands and colours but we are all the same Spensa

I think the tree is about friendship because it is colourful It is important that we are all friends and we are all the same no matter what size we are or what colour our skin is Alana

The tree shows me about friendship and greatness It doesnrsquot matter if we are different we can be friends forever Julian

This picture shows me it doesnrsquot matter what colour you are or how big you are or if you are at the bottom or at the top We can all be friends and we are all the same Jacob

I think the hands show that you are unique and special The hands show friendship and it doesnrsquot matter what size or colour you are Sienna

The tree is creative and all about different coloured hands We have the same hands but they may be different sizes and colours It doesnrsquot matter Kayley

The picture is about how we are all the same We are all very very special It doesnrsquot matter if you have different coloured skin or you are big or small we are all the same Archie

The picture reminds me of colour size and friendship People are all different sizes but you can still be friends If you are different colours you can still be friends It doesnrsquot matter we are all the same Asher

I think the tree is about friendship There are different sized hands of different colours They are different shapes However we are all the same even if you come from a different shape We are all the same Oakley

The picture showed me that you could be any colour size or shape It does not matter who is next to you You are allowed to be different from your friends Lenny

I think all of those hands are about friendship I think they are nice and it does not matter if you have different coloured skin You can be big or small and it does not matter That is what I think Jack
