PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear families,

During Term 4 students at all year levels participate in several transition sessions with their new teachers in the year level classroom spaces to learn about their program for the following year. Gisborne Secondary College also offers a range of opportunities for senior primary students to experience their teachers and facilities through their transition programs in Years 5 and 6. A group of Year 6 students recently visited the school to participate in a Bike Ed program with VCAL students. The college also offers an Enrichment Program each term for students in Years 5 and 6. Oral Health Screening Year P/1/2 Sunbury Community Health has been offering a FREE dental service to P/1/2 students at Gisborne Primary School in Term 1, yesterday and further days in the coming weeks. There are no out-of-pocket costs for any child. As part of this program, a dental practitioner comes to the school and provides dental screening, application of fluoride, and discusses developing good dental habits with your child. A report is provided after the check-up, with information on your child’s screening and whether a further appointment is required. The main purpose of a screening visit is to identify any major dental issues and also provide your child with familiarity to the dental environment and process. This visit has a preventative focus, as we emphasize good oral hygiene and diet practices. Even if your child sees their family dentist there are still benefits to participating in the program. If you would like your child to participate in the dental screening program, there is still an opportunity to return the forms for the remaining sessions scheduled at the school. Some families have not taken advantage of this excellent program that educates students and monitors their oral health. MESSAGE FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL

Caring Hearts, Caring Minds, Caring Actions

Wellbeing – Values/SEL

I am absolutely blown away by the amount of students who are visiting

me each day to exchange their 5 tokens for a values wrist band. I am

so proud of the students and their

efforts towards displaying the

expected values at GPS. Students

are working hard to receive their

tokens and wrist band.

Congratulations to you all. I think

you are amazing.

As part of the Social, Emotional

Learning (SEL) approach at GPS, students and staff have

been discussing ‘Random act of kindness’ and what this

means to receive or give a random act of kindness. Students

have identified different ways they could show others they

care and the emotions linked with this. This links in with our

value of Caring and students are building their

understanding of this. As parents and teachers, we model

this behaviour to our children/students.

I wonder what would happen if we all did one random act of

kindness to another?

Please see a link to a clip: ‘Kindness Boomerang’.

School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS)

Last Thursday, members of our wellbeing team attended the next day of training in the School

Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) approach. It was evident to us that the work that is

happening at GPS is positive and in the right direction of supporting students with their learning,

staff with providing a calm and engaging learning environment, and families with guidelines

and opportunities to ensure a friendly and safe school community for all

members. In line with an ever changing school environment, it has been

identified that we have needed to add in two columns to the student

matrix to ensure these areas are experiencing a calm and respectful

space for all involved. Please see the adjusted student matrix with the

additional columns of ‘Office’ and ‘Sick Bay’. These expectations will be

introduced to the students in the coming week.

Have a wonderful weekend

Kind regards, Lisa Maxwell

A Jam Packed Sports Report—From Mr G!

Essendon Player Visit Slowly but surely I’m working on turning every non-Essendon supporter at our school from the dark side to enlightenment……….starting with the Year sixes. On Monday, our Year sixes had a visit from four Essendon Footballers. The players spoke to our students for approximately 30 minutes about different aspects of their life as AFL footballers. They spoke about over coming challenges in their football career, diet, leadership and what a day in the life of an AFL footballer looks like. We also ran a Q & A for the kids to ask questions about topics they were interested in. We finished the session with a kick on the oval where the Bomber players (and our boys and girls) showed off their extraordinary talents. I was extremely proud to receive feedback from the players that they thought our kids were fantastic and one of the better schools they’d been to. Well done Year sixes! Below are a couple of pictures from Mondays visit.

Running Coach I was fortunate to secure the services of Mark Carey (local running coach) to chat to some of our District and

Division runners. This timely visit enabled Mark to chat to the students who are representing our Division this

Wednesday about race preparation, handling nerves, warm-up and stretching and race tactics. I’ve got no doubt

the tips he passed on will hold them in good stead for Wednesday and beyond. If you have a child who has shown

an interest in running (cross country or athletics) Mark’s information can be found at the bottom section of the

newsletter. Mark is pictured below with some of our students during the coaching session.

Tennis Program This week wraps up a four week program of tennis for all of the Year 3-6 students. Local coaches Leigh and Glen Chapman who have over 10 years’ experience in coaching ran a program for most the Year 3-6 grades that catered for all age groups and abilities. Hopefully their knowledge and passion for the game has rubbed off on the kids and sparked a bit of interest in this great game. The Sporting Schools program is part of a Government initiative that fully funds programs like this one to encourage students to become more active by getting involved in sport outside school. A big thanks to Leigh and Glen for all their help throughout the program. If your child is interested in getting involved in tennis, Leigh and Glen’s information can be found at the bottom of the newsletter.

Canteen News Important Changes to Wednesdays Menu

Term 2 PLEASE READ

As part of our healthy eating program, we have made changes to our canteen menu from Term 2 onwards. On Wednesdays, only water will be available for ordering. Students will be unable to place orders on Wednesdays for any other type of drinks such as fruit juice or flavoured milk. There are no restrictions on ordering any drink types on Fridays. The menu will be as usual.

The aim of this change is to encourage students to limit the consumption of high energy and high sugar drinks e.g. once a week and see them as a treat.

The Australian Government Healthy School Canteens recommendations are that discretionary items are offered only twice a term. We will be following these recommendations by the end of the year.

Assistance for Canteen — helpers needed Each Friday the canteen needs volunteers to help with the preparation and serving of

food from the canteen. If you can offer an hour or two—all help is

gratefully appreciated! You just need a current Working with Children Check to help

out. If you are available—just email the office at [email protected]

Turning bottle top lids into prosthetic hands

YOU can make a difference!

We need your bottle top lids!

Envision is on a mission to create 100 prosthetic hands out of bottle caps, with 3D printers, which will then be donated to children in need across under-serviced countries.

About 500 grams worth of recycled bottle top lids and 40 hours of work is needed to create one hand!

At Gisborne Primary School we are coming on board with this world wide community project and we would like you to assist us with collecting 2000 bottle top lids by the end of this term. This is only 1 lid per student per week.

These lids can be from milk, soft drink and juice bottles.

These bottle top lids can be dropped off at Mrs. Lopes’ classroom 6B.

A big thank you to Jack and Tracey Miles for helping with this project.

For more information you can watch the YouTube clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NP0VcknTjJg or visit the Envision website at https://envision.org.au/envision-hands/
