    BYTHOMAS J. MCKILLENMANAGING EDITOR

Gov. Scott Walker joined employ-ees of Airgas Inc. Oct. 8 in celebratingthe companys new facility inGermantown.

According to information fromAirgas, the new 250,000-square footfacility will include office space as wellas the distribution center while alsoserving as the new home for the AirgasTotal Access sales unit that servesAirgas customers in the midwest and

mountain states.Information from Airgas states thecompany is one of the nation's leadingsuppliers of industrial, medical and spe-cialty gases, and hard goods, such aswelding equipment and related prod-ucts

In comments to employees that fol-lowed a tour of the new facility, whichis still under construction, Walker saidthe companys growth wouldnt be hap-pening without the quality of the com-panys employees.

I thank you for that, because itsnot just about a building, its about acompany growing, its about addingemployees, its about adding value, cer-tainly about adding new workspace. But (overall), it wouldnt happen withoutthe quality of the employees here in the

state of Wisconsin for Airgas, they

wouldnt be making that kind of invest-ment, Walker said.

Walker noted that between July2013-14, Wisconsin ranked third in themidwest for private sector job creationwhile last months state unemploymentrate was 5.6 percent, the lowest sinceOctober 2008.

That wouldnt happen withoutcompanies without employees likeyou, Walker told Airgas staff.

Walker also cited a portion of thenew building devoted to training onwelding. He noted that October is man-

ufacturing month and that Wisconsin istied with Indiana for their reliance onmanufacturing as part of the workforce. He noted that many manufacturingemployees are near retirement and thatthere is a challenge and an opportuni-ty for developing a future workforce inmanufacturing.

What youre doing here is not justabout a building, its not just aboutsales, its ultimately about helping morepeople live the American dream forthose that work here and the customersyou serve along the way, Walker said.

President of Airgas USA, LLCAndrew R. Cichocki said making theGermantown facility possible involveda collaboration between the state, vil-lage and construction firms C.G.Schmidt, Eppstein Uhen Architects, and

    Ric Miller Construction Consulting.

Cichocki said the new facility willbe double the size of the currentGermantown facility while also addingstaff from an other facility in theMilwaukee area. He said 20 employ-ees will be added at the new facilitynow with 60 more to be added overthe next several years.

Although some warning lights are spe-cific to a manufacturer or model, there aresome that are universal. Let's take a look atsome of the more common warning lights andwhat you should do in the instance they occur.

    SNOWBLOWERREPAIRS

By Ralph LeeRotating your car's tires is like going to

the dentist. Nobody likes it, but it's some-thing that should be done. Depending on

where and when it happens, getting a flattire is similar to teeth issues. If a tire goesflat in your driveway, it's like a small cavi-ty that has to be filled. It's annoying butnot that big a deal. If a tire blows in rush-hour traffic, you're talking full-blown rootcanal, and who wants that? Here aresome tips to prevent tire decay.

Most newer model cars are front-wheel drive, and tire rotation becomesimportant because the front tires wearfaster than the rear. The reason for this issimple: When you make any kind of fullturn in traffic or follow the curve of theroad, more of the vehicle's weight isplaced on the edges of the tires. Thisespecially affects the front tires because

these are ones that are actually turningwhile the rear tires stay in a straight line. This turning causes the edges of the tiresto wear over time. If your tires wearunevenly, you're suspectible to spottybraking and poor handling-realtoothaches, er, headaches.

Another important aspect to tire rota-tion is the eventual replacement of yourtires. If you don't rotate your tires, you'llreplace them two at a time, and thatmeans always having uneven wear onyour wheels. If you replace your tires fourat a time-and keep them rotated regularly-you'll have even wear on all four.

How often should you rotate yourtires? Well, that obviously varies based onthe amount of miles you drive each day.Unfortunately, for some drivers, you mayneed to rotate your tires more often thanyou visit the dentist for a checkup. A rota-tion is often recommended at about7,500 miles. That's often the time for anoil change, so do some multi-tasking andget both jobs done at once. Check yourowner's manual to see when it recom-mends tire rotations for your particularmodel.

How to have your tires rotated hasbeen subject to debate similar to the dis-course over the merits of fluoride. Again, check your owner's manual to see ifthere's a specific method recommendedfor your model of vehicle. If there isn't,

there are two basic ways for front-wheeldrive tire rotation, and both are as simpleas flossing. One method is to move thefront driver's side tire to the back driver's

side and the back driver's side to the frontpassenger's side. The front passenger'sside then moves to the back passenger'sside and the back passenger's side to thefront driver's side. Another method is toswap the front driver's side and the rearpassenger's side tires with each other, and then swap the front passenger's sidetire with the rear driver's side. Eithermethod seems to help the tires achievemore even tread wear, and that's whatyou're after.

Keeping your tires rotated on a regu-lar basis can prevent an ill-timed flat tireand that can prevent grinding and gnash-ing your teeth-which is a whole differentdental problem.

vehicle's electrical needs. Your vehicle will runas long as the battery has a charge, whichmay not be very long in the daylight and evenless at night. To get more life out your battery, turn off all unnecessary electrical devices(radio, heater and defroster). The problemcould be the result of a number of things, suchas corroded or loose battery cables, an alter-nator malfunction or a damaged drive belt. Ifyou don't see a problem with the batterycables or the belt, start the vehicle and turn onthe lights. If they are dim, you have a problemwith the alternator or some other electricalpart. You should have the vehicle checked outimmediately.

The oil pressure warning light indicatesthe engine is low on oil or there is no oil pres-

sure. Don't drive your vehicle. If you do, youwill run the risk of severely damaging theengine. Start by checking the oil level. If it islow, add some and then turn on the engine tosee if the light goes out. If it does not, youcould have a bad oil pump or a faulty oil pres-sure-sending unit that will need to bereplaced.

The temperature warning light is not alight to be ignored. If it comes on while youare driving, stop immediately and turn theengine off. If you don't, you could causeextensive damage to the engine. Once theengine cools off, unscrew the radiator capand check the coolant level. Never remove

the cap when the engine is hot or you couldrisk getting burned by coolant or water spray-ing out. Add coolant and do a quick check forleaks around the radiator and hoses. Start thevehicle and proceed with care. If the lightcomes on again, you have an internal prob-lem. There are a number of things that cancause the engine to overheat besides lowcoolant, such as a failed water pump, some-thing blocking the radiator airflow, a brokencooling fan, an overworked engine in reallyhot weather, the towing of a heavy trailer orthe buildup of sludge inside the cooling sys-tem.

Depending on the make, model and yearof your vehicle, there are other warning lightsto look out for. These include: Lamp out indi-cator light, which lets you know you have aheadlight, taillight, stoplight or turn signal light

out. Seat belt warning light or chime, whichlets you know someone hasn't buckled theirseatbelt. Low windshield washer fluid warn-ing light, which lets you know the windshieldwasher reservoir is low. Door ajar warninglight, which lets you know one of the doors ortailgate isn't shut all of the way. Servicereminder light, which lets you know your vehi-cle is due for an oil change. Emissions warn-ing light, which lets you know there is a prob-lem with the emissions sensor or your vehiclehas reached a certain mileage.

When a warning light comes on, yourvehicle is trying to tell you something. Listen toit and take care of the problem.

By Tresa Erickson"What are you going to all of that trou-

ble for?" your sister demands to know after

she hears you making an appointment witha service station to have your tires inspect-ed. Unlike your sister who lives in theSunshine State, you live up north, wherewinters can be harsh. In order to ensureyou get where you need to this winter, youare having your vehicle winterized, startingwith the tires.

Good tires can make all of the differ-ence on treacherous winter roads. In orderto prepare your vehicle for the roughweather ahead, you must make sure yourtires are properly inflated. Tires lose abouta psi of air pressure every month and everytime the air temperature drops about 10degrees. Vehicles with under-inflated tiresdo not handle well, especially on icyroads. They also increase wear and tearand use more gas (and who needs thatwith the price of gas these days).

If your vehicle is brand new, you may nothave to worry much about the tire pressure. It probably came equipped with a tire pres-

sure monitor that will inform you wpressure has dropped below a certaIf you have an older vehicle, you

nitely need to keep an eye on the sure and have your tires checked re

You also need to keep an eytread depth. The more worn andthe tread on your tires, the less will have on the road. Dependinwhere you live and how treacheroads become in the winter, yowant to consider switching to winDesigned specifically for icy roadwill provide you with superior gripmind that you will need to replacetires. Should you do just the back will compromise your grip and youTo ensure this does not happen, sdealers refuse to sell consumers fefour tires, unless they need areplacement winter tire.

It is important that you wintervehicle. Start with the tires and wway up. The better prepared your winter, the safer you will be whenabout.

By Ralph LeeYou may not know what end of a

wrench to hold, but anybody can get a gripon these helpful car care tips.

Get the soapPerhaps the simplest thing to do to take

care of your car is to wash it on a regularbasis. Washing your car once a week canhelp keep at bay the bugs, tar and otherdebris that can build up over time. Given afoothold, these things can become nearlyimpossible to clean off. If you can't managea once-a-week wash, try for once a month. If you can't manage once a month and youhave kids, hire 'em out.

Check the oil. Stat!Your car's oil is like its blood. It needs to

be checked regularly. Check your owner'smanual for the type of oil your car uses andwhere the oil dipstick under the hood islocated. At least once a month, check your

oil level. Top it off if necessary. All you needis the oil, a funnel and some paper towels toclean up any mess.

And while you're checking the oil...Your car has other fluids that need to be

checked every so often as well. Theseinclude automatic transmission fluid, coolant (anti-freeze), brake fluid, differen-tial oil and power steering fluid. Consultyour owner's manual for the location ofthese fluid reservoirs. Check their levelsperiodically, top them off when necessaryand have them changed when your manualindicates.

Hold the greaseYou're keeping the outside of your car

looking sharp with regular washings, but

how about under the hood? Head to yourlocal auto parts store and check out thevariety of degreasers available. Follow thedirections and watch your engine sparkle. An added benefit to having a clean engineis it makes it easier to locate any troublespots (e.g., leaks).

Windshield woesBetween washings your windshield may

get dirty from rain or snowstorms or ourfine-feathered friends. A clean windshield is

crucial to safe driving. Virtually any kind ofglass cleaner and lint-free towel will haveyour windshield sparkling in no time. Don'tforget the inside of the windshield as well. Also check and clean your windows asnecessary.

Out, out, damned spotIt's no fun noticing a spot or two on your

windshield that you want to clean off andfinding out you're out of washer fluid or,worse yet, your wipers are worn out. Wiperblades should be changed about once ayear. Check your washer fluid level whenyou check the oil.

Lots of lightsThere's nothing worse than looking in

your rearview mirror and seeing the flash-

ing lights of a police car behind you.Sometimes the reason for a traffic stop is assimple as a missing headlight or taillight.Avoid this problem by doing a periodicwalkaround of your car to make sure alllighting systems are functioning. Don't for-get the light illuminating your license plate.Inside the vehicle, make sure all your interi-or lights are working properly.

Inflation situationUnder- or over-inflated tires can be a

dangerous-and sometimes deadly-situation.Tires improperly inflated wear out fasterand can rob you of the gas mileage youdeserve. Check your owner's manual forthe proper amount of pressure your tiresneed. Get in the habit of checking each

tire's pressure at regular intervals. Youcould be saving your life and you will savemoney.

With colder temperatures coming, youmight be thinking about making some addi-tions that will help your home and your pock-etbook get through the winter unscathed. Many people automatically think of draftyplaces in the home like doorsills or older win-dows. Its a great idea to pay attention tothese, but insulation actually has a muchgreater effect. Rather than a quick draft, poorinsulation is like a slow sieve, leaking energyat every surface of your home. Fall is the per-fect time to install more insulation in yourhome.

The first step is to find out how much insu-lation you actually have. Crawl up in to yourattic and look at the depth of the insulationthere. That can offer you a clue about the

quality of the rest of the insulation in yourhome. There are also numerous organizationsthat will come out and do a home energyaudit for you. Having an energy audit is agood idea for a number of reasons, including

the fact that it will reveal the quality of insula-tion in hard-to-check places like inside yourwalls.

These days, youve got several optionsfor home insulation. Most people think ofgiant rolls of pink, and these rolls or batts arestill readily available. Made of fiberglass orrock wool, they are easy to install and rela-tively cheap. They are also cut to standardwidths to fit between wall studs or floor joistsin the ceiling. You might also look into profes-sional installation of loose-fill, rigid foam orfoam-in-place insulation. Loose-fill insulationcan be blown into place, making it useful for

odd-shaped places like roofs or ductingwhere it can be difficult to install other kindsof insulation. Rigid foam can be applied toexterior walls and has a higher R-ratingbased on thickness.

Each type of insulation is given an R-rat-ing, essentially a measure of how much resist-ance to heat flow the product has. As you doyour research, youll quickly learn the R-val-ues of different types of insulation. Rememberthat these are based on depth as well, andthe resistance to heat will change based onhow much material you put into your house.

Each region of the country has different

recommendations for the amount of iyou should have, so check with yourtor before proceeding to maximinvestment. Insulation is one of the mtive ways you can reduce your energditures, offering a much faster returninvestment than other options. In adkeeping your home warm in the winlation can keep the heat out in the doubling your investment. Once youpleted your renovation, you can cozthe winter under the new blanket house.

Executive Officer Michael L. Molinini saidthe company has been in Germantown since1996 and have known about a week afterwe moved in that what we had was toosmall. Weve been waiting patiently for solong to get around to dealing with this asweve supported growth in other parts of theUS and now it s your time.

Molinini thanked Gov. Walker, VillagePresident Dean Wolter and residents andcivic associations in the village for their sup-port.

Wolter welcomed Airgas employees tothe new facility. Wolter said the planningand development of the facility has occurredover the past two years.

Today is the culmination of all the plansand many, many meetings so that we canstand here today and look at this beautifulbuilding behind us a beautiful buildingthats perfect in a perfect place, Woltersaid. Some said this building would neverbe built, others said it would be built but notin Germantown. Ive always believed this

building would be built in Germantown.Wolter cited the winning team includ-

ing Airgas officials. He thanked the companydistribution facility in Germantown and theircontinued support in the community.

Wolter also thanked two officials at theDepartment of Natural Resources (DNR) fortheir assistance in addressing wetland miti-gation applications that allowed the facility

to be constructed. He also thanked villagestaff and construction teams on the project.Wolter also cited the use of a tax incre-

mental finance (TIF) district for the area thathelped developed the business park for thefacility. He noted that within the past fouryears, many companies have expanded inthe village, many of them using Airgas prod-ucts.

Gov. Walker has helped provide theright economic environment for this to occur.Gov. Walker and the state Legislature havemade the right decision, providing tools toGermantown and all communities inWisconsin the ability to attract new businessand for its current businesses to grow andadd jobs, Wolter said.
