A hydrogen fuel cell is a ´batteryµ which createspower by splitting the atoms of hydrogen, usingthem for power, and then combining them with

oxygen to create the byproduct- water. A fuel cell is different from an chemical battery in

that it does not store energy, and will function aslong as it has oxygen and hydrogen.

*A hydrogen fuel cell does not burn hydrogen tocreate energy, it creates the energy chemically

The Cathode

A hydrogen fuel cell by itself only creates about1.25 volts. (A car battery is about 12 volts)

To get higher power outputs they are stacked.

From there they are connected to a battery orcapacitor that is charged to raise the current toa level that can run a car, or other object.

*the current can also be raised by physicallymaking each cell bigger.

There are many ways to obtain hydrogen, I have experimented with aluminum andhydrochloric acid, along with electrolysis.

The aluminum and acid works best because thereaction is quick and yields lots of hydrogen.

Electrolysis doesn·t work as well because it

creates smaller volumes of

gas.

Works by putting a current through a liquidwith the use of two electrodes.

One gas is created half as quickly on one

electrode than the other electrode.

algae, which creates hydrogen under certainenvironmental conditions.

With the research that I have done this year, I plan to create a hydrogen fuel cell or stack of fuel cells to see firsthand how they work.

If I find that it is worth it for me to create thestack, I would attempt to create a system thatwould work as a portable charger.

*this should be a two year project
