Who would be the audience for your media product?&How did you attract/address your audience?Billy Ingram

Questions 4 & 5

The target audience I decided to aim for was both genders aged between 16-26 years old. I addressed some of my friends and some older people that I know about preferred styles and fonts. They gave me feedback and their input of what they think people of this age range would prefer.

I tried to aim the magazine at both genders because I didn’t want to limit my audience, I did this by using neutral colours and also didn’t want to promote it more to one gender than the other.

I addressed the class of my magazine to be more all rounded; it is affordable enough for the lower classes or students and easily accessible for the higher classes that have a taste for Hip-Hop music and culture.

The nature of my audience would be more mainstream with some alternative. The majority is well known artists in popular music and charts etc. and some that aren’t as well known that are upcoming and have high potential which may attract younger audiences that like to stay updated with the hip-hop industry.

To attract my audience, other than the use of my focus group and feedback, I included some common conventions that work well in other magazines that have the same target audience as me. Some of the codes were house style, bold text and no overcrowding in the layout.

With the mise en scene, I dressed my model in the colours of my house style but in basic clothing (the reason being that I don’t think fashion is necessary to draw an audience to a music magazine). The mise en scene of my double page spread suits the genre well with the graffiti in the background.

I made the images eye catching, to attract the audience, by using the house style and also by making use the entirety of the space. Also using the graffiti under the bridge contributes to the standing out and boldness of the image on my double page spread along with the continuity across the double page.

The direct mode of address in the pose gives a personal relationship (uses and grats) which can be a large importance to fans, this would allow me to give a preferred or dominant reading.
