Drug abuse is damagingSouth Africa’s youthThe drug problem in South Africa is ex-tremely serious, with drug usage reportedas being at twice the world norm. Over 15%of our population has a drug problem.
In light of South AfricanNational Council on Alco-holism and Drug Depend-ence’ (Sanca) drug aware-ness week which was heldfrom24 to 28 June andYouthMonth, now is the perfecttime to place drug abuse inthe spotlight.
According to PatriziaScalone fromMetapsychetc, substance abuse can simplybe defined as a pattern ofharmful use of any sub-stance for mood-alteringpurposes that gives rise tobothphysicalandpsycholog-ical dependence.
“Dependence results inmental, emotional, biologi-cal or physical, social andeconomic instability. The effects of substanceabuse on an individual form the basis of its in-creasing effects on society. This is a major dan-ger of substance abuse,” she explains.
Studies show that people who start drinkingbefore the age of 15 are four times more likelyto become alcoholics. School kids who use alco-hol or drugs are three times more likely to getinvolved in violent crimes.
Frighteningly theaverageageofdrugdepend-ency in South Africa is 12 years old and drop-ping.
Along with peer pressure, there are severalothermajor factors that can influence the abuseof drugs among youths namely weak parentalcontrol, child abuse, imitation, emotional
stress, truancyamong students, the availabilityof the drugs and the ineffectiveness of laws ondrug trafficking.
No matter howmuch or often substances areconsumed, if drug use iscausing problems in the per-son’s life – at work, school, home or relationships –there is likely a substanceabuse or addiction problem.
“In many cases, there is afine line between regularuse, substance abuse and ad-diction.Very fewaddicts areable to recognise when theyhave crossed that line,” saysScalone.
“The good news is,however, that with the righttreatment and support, thedisruptiveeffectsofdrugusecanbecounteractedandcon-trol can be regained. Thefirst obstacle is to recogniseand admit a problem, or lis-ten to loved ones who are of-
ten better able to see the negative effects of druguse.”
Thesocialandeconomiccostsrelatedtoyouthsubstance abuse are high.
They result from the financial losses and dis-tress suffered by alcohol and drug related crimevictims, increased burdens for the support ofyoungadultswhoarenotabletobecomeselfsup-porting, and greater demands for medical andother treatment services for these youths.
Substance abuse is associated with both vio-lent and income generating crimes by youths.Gangs, trafficking, prostitution and growingnumbers of youth homicides are among the so-cial and criminal justice problems often linkedto adolescent substance abuse.

Some businesses sell services, some goods and othersgoods accompanied by a service, e.g. fitting tyres on yourmotorvehicle.Butunlessbuyingsomething fromavendingmachineorwithdrawingmoney fromanATM, there isusu-ally some formof service delivery in almost every business
transaction. It is important to remember that the
employee in your business who servesthecustomer is the faceofyourbusiness.Did you train that employeehow to treatyour most valuable asset, your clients?Actually we should call them guests, be-cause they do us a favour to do businesswith us. They are the reason why thecompany exists. Without them we haveno business.Because a service is inseparable from
the person who renders the service, itis important that the employees who attend to the custom-ers’ needs are well equipped to do so. Are they friendly,do they have the necessary product knowledge, does thewaiter know themenu by heart, do they portray excellencein dealingwith customers, etc? If not, remember the futureof your business rests in their hands.DavidMalherbe andDewaldScholtzwill discuss this top-
ic in more detail Monday evening from 19:00till 20:00 on Radio KC 107.7FM in the program“You the Entrepreneur”.David can be contacted at 021 873 0840 or

Method:
Dissolve the chicken stock powder, garam masala and ground cumin in 2
cups (500 ml) beer. Place the chicken in a potjie or stockpot. Arrange the
potatoes and onions around it and pour over the beer stock. Sprinkle over
the pepper and thyme. Simmer on medium-low heat, or cook in the oven at
180ºC, for about 1 hour. After about an hour, increase the heat a little and
taste the sauce. Season with salt and pepper if needs be, or even a little
brown sugar if you prefer a sweeter dish. Now add three-quarters of the
cream and stir gently for 10 minutes. Taste the sauce again and decide if
you need more cream (if it is too thin or too salty, you will need to add
more). Simmer for another 15 minutes on medium-low heat until the sauce
thickens enough to serve.
Tip: keep the sauce, vegetables and remaining deboned meat to use as a pie
filling the next day. You can make individual pies and freeze them.

Sal dit my soektog na werk benadeelHallo Klara,
Sterkte, Klara.
