UWC supports school scienceThe Rector of the University ofthe Western Cape (UWC), ProfBrian O’Connell and Director ofthe Garden Cities ArchwayFoundation, Myrtle February, recently opened a brand newUWCScience Learning Centre atthe Paulus Joubert SecondarySchool.

The Science Learning Centre forAfrica of UWC (UWC-SLCA) haswon a number of awards for its far-reaching support programmes toimprove the teaching and learningof science and mathematics.

To expedite this process it hasteamed up with corporate organisa-tions to improve the infrastructurewhere these gateway subjects aretaught to provide creative space inwhich teachers and learners can in-teract with science and technology.

UWC-SLCA, in partnership withtheGardenCitiesArchwayFounda-tion,has constructed 19 science lab-oratories or UWC Science LearningCentres (SLCs) at Western CapeSchools. This brings the number ofSLCs to 23, with a further threeplanned for this year.

Theconstructionof science learn-ing centres is an extension of thecurriculum support provided byUWC-SLCA to reward committedscience teachers, school manage-ment and learners.

The results of learners and teach-ers in national and internationalbenchmark tests paint a bleak pic-ture highlighting a national crisis.

According to Director of UWC-SLCA, Prof. Shaheed Hartley: “Wehave to start with the basics, sup-porting teachers to regain confi-dence to teach science with ad-vanced levels of understanding, knowledge and teaching skills.

“We have to be creative in provid-ing learnerswithopportunities thatwill draw their interest and willing-ness to learn.

“Acultureofscienceteachingandlearning will be a good start to im-prove National Science Centre andother assessments.

“Confident and knowledgeablescience teachers in the environ-mentofUWCScienceLearningCen-tres is a step in the right direction.

“It’s a wonderful achievement forour school to receive this majorsponsorship. Our learners andteachers deserve it,” says principalTommy Kearns.

Take care with PINs and ATMsResearch at FNB and VISA revealsthat while the overall awareness ofcard fraud is high, 42% of respond-ents share their bank card PINs.

The bank is always looking atways to improve security, but cer-tain key fraud factors are the re-sponsibility of both the bank andits customers.

“Wecannotstressenoughthe im-portance of keeping personal bank-ing information secret,” says Atha-ly Khan, Head of Fraud at FNBCredit Card. “The risk of sharingPINs or writing them down is two-fold: there is a bigger chance of be-ing defrauded and you may see ac-tivity that you did not authorise.”

Fraud cases are investigated onan individual basis, but a refund isunlikely if the original card andPIN were used for the transaction.

“Where the original card and itsPIN were used, we often find thatcard owners have shared their de-tails.

“This isseenascustomerauthor-isation and will decrease the likeli-hood of a refund,” notes Khan.

Counterfeit card fraud, on theother hand, is the result of a series

of compromises, where the fraud-sters skim and clone a card andthen use the PIN, obtained through“shoulder surfing” or installedcameras, to access a customer’sfunds. It is therefore critical thatcustomers remain vigilant whenentering their PINs at ATMs andpoint of sale (POS) devices, to avoidshoulder surfing.

Despite these factors, card usageis on the up as the safest transact-ing method, but only if you don’tnote down your PIN or share it.

When keying in your PIN at aPOS device, make sure that you:

• Never let the card out of sight• Retrieve the card after paying• Cover the pad when keying in

the PIN• Keep the slip in case your trans-

action is declined• Never accept assistance and

don’t draw money if you feel un-safe.

• Cancel your card if it is swal-lowed or you think you may havebeen a victim of fraud

• Don’t draw money at an ATMwithablankscreenandnever forceyour card into an ATM slot.

You, the entrepreneur: are youstarting or buying a business?DAVID MALHERBE

Starting your own businesstakes a lot of effort; you createsomething that was not therepreviously. It is hard to breaknew ground, but if you can pullit off, it gives great satisfaction.

There aremany things to attendtowhenstarting fromscratch.Themost important is tocreateastruc-ture for the business.Part of creating a structure is to

get suppliers for goods and servic-es you need. So, if you are a manufacturer,

wherewillyoubuyrawmaterials?Whowill servicemachines? etc. Inretail you need wholesale suppli-ers for the goods you want to re-

sell, suppliers of shelv-ing, etc. But in all busi-nesses you needadministration andbookkeeping servicesand you need to deter-mine what time of theyear or month to per-form certain tasks.A friend of mine has

a business that sellsfishing, swimming anddiving gear in a coastaltown. He toldme that inAugust, when

few people enter his shop, he or-ders large quantities of stock tohave it available during the De-cember/January season. Duringthat time, his suppliers close theirbusinesses and he cannot restock

until the end of Janu-ary.Creating structure is

often a matter of trialand error and the mis-takes that you makeduring the process aregood but hard lessons. That is why some

prefer buying a busi-ness and so receive thewhole structure al-ready in place, al-

though you pay a pretty penny forit. Many a business that is for sale

may be in some sort of financialtrouble and in my experience of-ten overpriced. Therefore, be cau-tious if you consider buying in-stead of starting a business.

When you start a business fromscratch, you grow your ability tomanage the business as it grows.Should you buy an existing busi-ness and have never been in busi-ness before, youmay find that youlack the skills to manage what isexpected of you.I have seen educated people get-

ting into the deep-end when buy-ing or inheriting businesses onlyto lose the lot a year or two later.Unfortunately you can’t buy the

ability to manage along with thebusiness. Only experiencewill do.* David Malherbe is a business-

and career consultant and lives inWellington. He canbe contacted viahis web page www.jedidiah.org.zaor T/F 021 873 0262 or on Facebookat “Jy die Entrepreneur.”
