Watch your back at ATMWhile electronic transactions are on the rise, many of us still regularly go to the ATM towithdraw cash for smaller transactions. It’saroutine thatmanytake forgrantedandthat’swhat fraudsters prey on.

Bank authorities are thus warning the pub-lic to take special care when using ATMs.Fraudsters will use any opportunity to com-mit crimes, from looking over your shoulderto elaborate set-ups such as installing a CCTVand skimmer on an ATM machine to steal in-formation about your bank or credit card. Bystealing your card information, it will enablethem to potentially create fake credit cards forfraudulent spending – all on your account

Banks are working around the clock to en-sure that your card transactions are protectedworldwide but you can still take simple stepsto ensure that you do not become a victim ofthis crime. To help stop retail/ATM fraud, re-member:

) review receipts before you sign,) monitor your statements,) sign up for email/text “transaction

alerts” from your bank,

) keep copies of ATM and sales receipts foryour records,

) be aware of your surroundings,) guard your PIN from fraudsters looking

over your shoulder, and) report missing cards immediately. For more tips and information on how to

protect your account information, avoid pay-ment card scams and resolve unauthorisedcard use, visit www.VisaSecuritySense.com.

Be wise with your moneyAfter the festive season, many people end up payinghigh debt in the coming months, often resulting inthem to have to take out loans.

Credit Ombudsman, Manie van Schalkwyk urgesconsumers to make sure they understand the truecosts of borrowing and payment conditions.

As a rule of thumb you shouldn’t borrow morethan 35 percent of your income or you could run intotrouble on your repayments.

“You can end up paying many more times whatyou borrowed in interest alone.

“Interest rates differ for long-term debt, such ashome loans, and short-term debt, such as credit andstore cards.”

“Borrow as little as possible,” he advises.Van Schalkwyk says consumers should investi-

gate debt consolidation offers from banks thorough-ly.

Under the National Credit Act (NCA), it’s yourright as a consumer to be given a pre-agreementstatement and quotation when seeking credit, hesays.

These will outline the terms and conditions of theproposed agreement and all costs involved such ascost of credit, interest, service fees, initiation fees, credit insurance, depositrequired, numberof instal-ments, date of first instalment and last instalment.

“You must know what is expected of you prior tosigning the credit agreement,” says Van Schalkwyk.

Be aware of exactly how much it will cost you andfor how long you will be paying off on the loan.

If you don’t understand something, take your timeand ask for assistance.

The loan agreement should also contain all othercharges that will be added. “Only borrow from a rep-utable credit provider otherwise you will have norecourse if things go wrong later on.”

Another key factor in the borrowing process isensuring that the credit provider has all the neces-sary information for the affordability assessment.

These are undertaken to ensure that you do notborrow more than you can afford and become over-indebted. “If you become over-indebted and cannotrepay your debt, credit providers can attach yourassets, such as your home or car, or deduct the mon-ey directly from your salary,” says Van Schalkwyk.

He explains that if you do find yourself runningbehind on your repayments, contact your credit pro-vider as soon as possible before the account is hand-

ed over for collection and legal action. They may be willing to negotiate a payment holi-

day or reduce your instalments.“The quicker you seek out help, the quicker you

will be able to get out of debt,” says Van Schalkwyk.Tips for borrowing wisely:) BudgetWhat’s the difference between how much income

your family earns and what your total expenses areeach month? Will you be able to pay for your debtonceyou’vecoveredallyourexpenses?Whatif inter-est rates go up, how much more will you be paying?

You should also plan for unexpected costs, suchas if you are in an accident or one of your familymembers is retrenched.

) Borrow as little as possibleAs a rule of thumb you shouldn’t borrow more

than 35% of your income or you could run into trou-ble on your repayments.

Put aside at least 15% of your income every monthin a safe investment for your retirement.

) Honesty is the best policyDisclose all the information required to your cred-

it provider, particularly for the affordability assess-ment.

If you’re dishonest, you could lose the protectionoffered by the NCA against reckless lending.

) Pay on time, every timePaying late will adversely affect your credit rating

and possibly your ability to take out credit in thefuture.

If you think you cannot meet your monthly instal-ments, call your credit provider immediately andtry to re-arrange payments.

Do not wait until you skip payments.) Home loan comes firstPay your home loan first.) Check your credit report regularlyThis way you’ll be able to identify any errors and

correct them. Under the NCA a credit bureau mustprovide you with one free copy of your credit reporteach year from each of the 11 registered bureaus.Additional copies cost between R20 and R30, exclud-ing VAT.

You are more distressed than usual over any dissonance in your environmentor personal relationships, and you are inclined to avoid serious discussions or

real disagreements with others. Also, challenging mental work andconcentration is difficult for you now.

(22 December - 21 January)CAPRICORN

This is a time of considerable frustration and your desires or efforts appearto be thwarted or at least delayed. Relationships with men and people in

authority may be particularly uncomfortable. Also, you have more self-doubtthan usual; your mood is somber and rather self-critical.

(21 January - 20 February)

AQUARIUS

Though you are unusually energetic, it is hard for you to get anything done. You tend to fly off the handle and to scatter your forces. You are happiest now

when you do something creative and daring, and that doesn't requirecooperating or conforming to others' wishes and needs.

PISCES(20 February - 21 March)

This is a good time for solitude, quiet, or contemplative activities and rest. Your spirits may betemporarily depressed, so take some time for yourself. Others may criticize you or show littleemotional warmth at this time. Emotional well-being and contentment characterize this timeperiod. You feel quite relaxed and carefree, and this would be a splendid time for a vacation.

ARIES(21 March - 21 April)

You feel quite amorous and affectionate now and will very much want to share this timewith someone you love or at least with congenial company. Your creative or artistic

inclinations are also stimulated, and your work in these areas will be especially satisfyingand successful at this time.

TAURUS(21 April - 21 May)

Extreme restlessness and discontent with the limitations of your current situationincline you to speculate and gamble on ways to quickly change your life. There is a

strong tendency to exaggerate and put on a front to impress others to gain theadvancement that you seek.

GEMINI(21 May - 22 June)

Your ability to concentrate on mundane concerns and problems diminishes now. Theworld of imagination, fantasy, entertainment, or art holds more attraction for you. Go toa movie with a friend (or write your own!). Also, your psychic sensitivity and intuition are

heightened at this time.

LEO(23 July - 24 August)

Restlessness, nervous haste, and rashness can be something of a problem, for you act onimpulse and may be out of sync with your environment. You feel that you have to fight forwhat you want or believe in, and you are very clear, decisive, and convincing right now, butyou also tend to stir up more controversy or competitive feelings than is really necessary.

VIRGO(24 August - 23 September)

This time is filled with stimulating discussions about controversial topics, unusual oroffbeat ideas, or "crazy" schemes. The tempo of your life increases and may leave you

feeling frazzled. Because you are quite restless, you may do or say things in hastethat you will regret later.

CANCER(22 June - 23 July)

Your thinking is rather gloomy and pessimistic at this time. You see the superficiality, theflaws, and the foolishness or impracticality in others' plans. Also, communicating with

others is difficult now, and people resist what you are saying. You feel more inhibited anduncommunicative, and you sense that others are not receptive.

LIBRA(23 September - 23 October)

Emotional well-being and contentment characterize this time period. You feel quiterelaxed and carefree, and this would be a splendid time for a vacation. Laziness,self-indulgence, and expecting everything to work out well with no effort on your

part are negative possibilities now.

SCORPIO(23 October - 23 November)

Your thinking is rather gloomy and pessimistic at this time. You see the superficiality, theflaws, and the foolishness or impracticality in others' plans. Also, communicating with
