Mordechai: Leadership & Hope“All of the king’s courtiers in the palace gateknelt and bowed low to Haman, for such was theking’s order concerning him; but Mordechaiwould not kneel or bow,” (Esther 3:2).

In Chapter 3 of the Book of Esther,Mordechai encounters the King’s courtiers allof whom are bowing down to King Ahasuerus.Mordechai however, is a Jew and Jews do

not bow down to anyone but God. So Mordechai refuses to kneel or bow despite the fact that it might cause him to be punished, or even killed. Mordechai demonstratesleadership and how to stand up for one’s beliefs.Mordechai further exhibits hope for the future by placinghis confidence in his niece Esther, whom he believes willdo the necessary work to save the Jewish people fromperil. Without Mordechai’s determination and hope, theoutcome of this story may have been very, very different!

Queen Esther: Bravery & HonestyIn the final chapter of the story, Queen Esther is faced witha choice. The King asks hers what is her greatest wish andpromises to grant it, no matter what. Queen Esther repliesby asking the King to spare her and her people from the illfated conclusion that Haman had planned for them. Estheruses her access to the King to advocate on behalf of herpeople. Though Mordechai encourages her throughout thestory, ultimately, the fate of the Jewish people is in Esther’shands and she uses her strengths to save not only herselfbut her tradition and her people!

dWe learn from the Talmud that the month of Adar is a timefor joy and celebration. As we approach the Purim holiday, may we all work together, using our individual strengthsto build a more joyful community for all of us!

We are now in the midst of the Hebrewmonth of Adar; the month during which wecelebrate the holiday of Purim. This holidayhonors the story of Queen Esther and heruncle Mordechai who lead the Jewish peopleof Shushan to triumph over the wicked,Haman. This holiday is marked by festive celebrations, silly costumes, and acts of lovingkindness. As a community, we rally aroundthis holiday and we embrace this time of merriment and joy!

Purim however, is also a holiday that celebrates thestrengths of the different characters that show up in thestory. Throughout the Book of Esther, we are given examplesof people who, even against their own best interests, demonstrate strength and courage in the face of adversity. As we examine this story, let us take note of the individualstrengths exhibited by the heroes of our story and considerwhat can learn from each of them.

Queen Vashti: Humility & Judgement“On the 7th day when the king was merry with wine, he ordered the 7 eunuchs in attendance to bring Queen Vashti before the king wearinga royal diadem, to display her beauty to the peoples and the officials; for she was a beautiful woman but Queen Vashti refused to come at theking’s command,” (Esther 1:10-12).

In the very opening of the Book of Esther, we learn thatQueen Vashti was summoned by the King and commandedto come and dance before his court. Vashti decides to refusethis command despite the fact that it may land her in hotwater with the King. Vashti’s humility and braverydemonstrates that no amount of power is so great that weshould be made to compromise our own self-worth andagency. Though Vashti is condemned in the story, she iscelebrated today as a strong woman who stood up for herself against the odds.

Early Childhood CenterEmbracing Laps over Apps:

Tackling the Question of Screen Time for our Preschool ChildrenAs educators, we are often asked: Howmuch is too much when it comes to childrenand screen time? When we think about ourown childhood, the challenges of balancinglife and social media/technology did notexist. After all, the first iPhone was releasedin the US on June 29, 2007. Therefore, toanswer this question, we have looked tothe literature and scientific research on this subject.

“Wait Until 8th,” an initiative that advocatesfor delaying smartphone acquisition until8th grade states, “Electronic devices arechanging childhood for children. Playingoutdoors, spending time with friends, readingbooks and hanging out with family is happening a lot less to make room forhours of Snap Chatting, Instagramming, and catching up on YouTube.

All of this discussion seemed to be focused on teenagers and middle schoolchildren until a recent episode of 60 Minutesrevealed brain studies which examinedhow screen time is changing the actualbrain development of young children, aswell as their mental health. In these studies,MRIs reveal differences in the brains of 9-year-old children who spend a lot of time with screens, specifically, prematurethinning of their brain cortices, the area responsible for cognition, approach, andtop-down thinking. This naturally leads us to further question how these devicesare affecting our very youngest children.

While many believe that children arelearning tangible skills by watching videoson the iPad that will translate to the realworld, this theory does not pan out in thelaboratory. Dr. Dimitri Christakis, a physicianat Seattle Children’s Hospital, and the leadauthor of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ most recent guidelines forscreen time, states: “if you give a child anapp where they play with virtual Legos, virtual blocks, and stack them, and thenput real blocks in front of them, they start

all over.” Dr. Christakis is one of the fewscientists who has already conducted experiments on the influence screens haveon children under the age of two. It’s a critical period for human brain development. The American Academy of Pediatrics nowencourages parents to “avoid digital mediause, except video chatting, in childrenyounger than 18 to 24 months.”

There simply isn’t enough longitudinalresearch showing the long-term effects, especially for our very young children, foranyone to know what a screen is doing to atoddler or preschooler. These long-term outcomes and information will not bereadily available for years come. However, what research does tell us now is that kidswho spent more than two hours a day on screens, score lower on thinking andlanguage tests. Dr. Dimitri Christakisstated “In many ways, the concern that investigators like I have is that we’re sortof in the midst of a natural kind of uncontrolled experiment on the next generation of children”.

The American Association of Pediatricians(AAP) has recently released an updated report about the best toys for childhooddevelopment. “The best toys are those that support parents and children playing, pretending and interacting together,” saidAlan Mendelsohn, MD, FAAP, co-author of the report and associate professor in theDepartments of Pediatrics and PopulationHealth at NYU. “You just don’t reap thesame rewards from a tablet or screen. Andwhen children play with parents – the realmagic happens, whether they are pretendingwith toy characters or building blocks orpuzzles together.”

As educators and parents, we know that children need toys that encourage relationships and promote socialization. They also need toys that help develop language, physical growth and problemsolving. Digital toys and screen do not pro-

mote physical activity or socialization. Wealso are well aware that balance is the keyto everything and moderation can be astrong compromise here.

“The more we know about early brain development, the more we understand theneed for play that is based on human interaction,” Dr. Healey said. “There is noscreen, video game or app that can replacethe relationships built over toys.”

How can we protect our children and support healthy brain development andstrong mental health?

In our ECC, technology is introduced beginning in our Preschool 3 year old classrooms with intentionality and carefulconsideration. Computers in the classroomssupport lesson plans through whole groupinstruction and internet reference in a verylimited capacity. Children also have limitedavailability to specific learning games, to beplayed with a partner, designed to supportliteracy or math goals. This availability begins in most rooms toward the secondhalf of the school year.

Our Technology Lab led by Miss Nira al-lows children to work in small groups on avery limited basis, depending on grade level(ranging from monthly to weekly). Goals in-clude an introduction to the different parts of acomputer, fine motor coordination using amouse, keyboarding, and age appropriateskill building. Our Kindergartners are learningto actually code this year in our IPAD Lab,but it is also very limited and directed.

Our STEM Room provides children withopportunity for HANDS-ON experienceswith particular engineering related curriculum including robotics. Problemsolving, exploration, logical reasoning, spatial relations, cooperative learning andcoding are all provided to allow studentsto build upon their natural inclination toexplore, build, and question without afocus on screens.

Guidelines for parents are still being developed but what we did read led us toconsider the following:• Work to establish a limited screen time

plan with your child, even at a young age. • Model, model, model healthy device

behavior. Children are ALWAYS watchingus… how often is that iPhone in ourhands while we are with our children?

• For young babies/toddlers, avoid technology and screens. (as much as possible)

• Limit access of gaming consoles and devices, as there is much written on theaddictive nature, by design, of thesegames.

Specific tips for parents who are buyingtoys for their children from the AmericanAcademy of Pediatrics suggests avoiding“overstimulating toys, toys that promote gender or race stereotypes, and toys thatdon’t foster human interaction. Instead, parents should look for toys that engendercreativity, interpersonal play, and imaginative play.”

The list of traditional toys they suggest thatpromotes the best types of developmentalplay includes: dolls and action figures, pretend cooking/food toys, toy cars, blocks, puzzles, trains, art supplies, cardgames, board games, toy letters, bikes, trikes, balls, and push and pull toys. The report reminds parents that children

“under two shouldn’t be watching screensat all, and over two should watch less thanan hour a day. Even then, they shouldwatch with adult supervision/interaction,and programming that is educational and age-appropriate.”

As a community of dedicated educators, clergy, and parents, it is vital that we continue read as much as we can about current research and remain vigilant whenit comes to these critical years and the development of our precious children. Joinus in our commitment to protect and to foster active, creative, resilient, curiouslearners, with appropriate self-regulationskills and social intelligence, for all of our beautiful children.

As the Women’s Association proudly marches into spring, it is amazingto think of all we have accomplished so far in 2019. We are so gratefulfor the fabulous women who have planned events, and appreciateour congregants for coming out and supporting our programming. From our ECC moms to our Prime Time friends, and everyone in between, our goal continues to be to foster a warm environment thatbrings the great women of TBJ together.

Thank you to our community of volunteers who make The InterfaithFood Pantry a rewarding experience for both the volunteers andpantry recipients alike. We are so lucky to have Jodi Coopermanwhoprovides us the opportunity to perform such an important mitzvah. We thank Jordana Gordon and Lauren Toubes for planning the ChallahBake and Cooking Class at Kings, even though snow once againcaused us to postpone these events. And we can’t thank DianaJoseph and Vicki Solomon enough for planning a successful LadiesNight Out that supported Comfort 360. The food was delicious, thedecorations were stunning and it was truly memorable to come together as a community to support such an important cause.

In the coming weeks we will be assembling and distributing ourMishloach Manot bags. This new undertaking is made possible byour fabulous chairs Rena Carlton, Elissa Zaslow and Anna Silverman.

Mishloach manot, or purim gift bags, are meant to serve two purposes: to instill harmony within our community as a thoughtfulgesture, by letting our community members know that we arethinking of them and to remind us that as we celebrate the holidayof Purim, we cannot forget about the needs of the less fortunate. This fundraiser will not only support the important work of ourWomen’s Association, but will also offer financial assistance toMazon, an organization that performs the important work of feedingthe hungry. We hope that you all enjoy your Purim goodies andthat this fundraiser will become an annual event.

As the days become longer and the snow melts, we know thatspring is around the corner, and for the Women’s Association thatmeans that our Spring Luncheon is on the horizon. Why ShulCloud? As many of you know, in December we moved our membership

database from an old platform, SOS, to a state-of-the-art platform,ShulCloud. We made this decision in early 2018 in order to beginutilizing more efficient and effective cloud-based technology. Bystreamlining our technology, we are able to focus less on transactionsand more on relationships. As with any new system, we have experienced some growing pains, but we are sure the benefitswill outweigh these initial glitches and appreciate your supportto help make sure that we are working with the most accurate information about each and every TBJ family.

ShulCloud is currently used by over 900 congregations worldwide and is an integrated tool that allows staff and clergy to:

• Access congregant information from wherever we are• Manage Pastoral issues• Create and track event registration • Manage our website• Send congregational email• Manage Accounts Receivable • Manage School enrollment

As a congregant you now have access to data that was never possible with SOS. When you sign in at TBJ.org you can:

• Review your statement• Update family information • Pay online and set up a payment plan • Register for events • Access a congregational directory that is updated real time• Enroll in Religious School and TBJ Teens (coming this spring)

And now you can access the TBJ App where you can check ourcalendar and events listing, access the directory and register and pay for events. Search TBJ in The AppStore and look for our logo to download the App

If you prefer doing things the same way you always have, you can still mail in a check, call us with your tributes and event registrations and have us make changes to your family data.

We appreciate your patience during this transition period and are here to support you with any issues that you have encountered and are looking forward to all of the additional functionality that ShulCloud will offer for our entire TBJ family.

If you need help with ShulCloud or have any questions, concerns and general feedback please feel free to contact me at [email protected] or 973-671-6632

This exhibit entitled, Landscapes: Human and Otherwise, was inspired in part by my love of the movies. I grewup in the fifties in a house without a television. The movies had a particularly powerful impact on me. Particularlythe close-ups. It was through them that I first became mesmerized by the landscape of the human face. Afteryears of portrait photography, I began to explore other landscapes. This exhibit then, is a compilation of my response to various landscapes over the years.

Family Trip to Israel

With excitement and great antici-pation, we are pleased to announcethat once again we are planning aCongregational Family Trip to Israel. The trip is tentatively planned for December 19 through December 30,2019. The trip will be led by RabbisGewirtz and Perolman, our ReligiousSchool Director, Tess Levine and willbe chaired by Jill and Craig Parker.

We are planning the trip to suit thespecific needs of families with chil-dren from Kindergarten through HighSchool and College. We will have twotour guides on each bus (one gearedtowards adults and one geared towards children) so that we can provide the best possible educational, spiritual and social experience forboth adults and children. Accommo-dations will be family-friendly andour days will be tailored to reach participants of all ages.

In a ten-day trip, it would be impossible to see the entire country,so our itinerary will include:Jerusalem, Masada and the Dead Sea,Tel Aviv and northern parts of Israel. Finally, and maybe most meaningful, for any of your children of B'nai Mitzvahage, we will hold a unique B'nai Mitzvahservice atop of Masada. We will alsobless our children who will becomeB'nai Mitzvah at TBJ within in theyear of our trip. As always, if there areadults who have not yet had aBar/Bat Mitzvah, they too can partic-ipate in this extraordinary experienceof becoming B'nai Mitzvah in Israel.

We are anticipating a cost per person of approximately $6400,which includes airfare, hotels andmost meals. There will be a reducedprice for younger children. We verymuch want you to be part of this experience, so please join us at a

general information meeting whereyou will be given prices, an itineraryand be able to ask any pertinent questions. The meeting will be held onJanuary 31st, at 6:30 pm. A light dinner will be served. Please RSVP bycalling the Rabbis' Assistant, PennieCordobes, at 973-671-6627 or [email protected].

Please note that we do not providetravel insurance for the trip.It is important to note that some insurance programs provide morecomprehensive coverage, including"cancel for any reason" coverage andcoverage for pre-existing conditions, when the policy is purchased in immediate proximity (typically, 10-21days) to your initial trip deposit.

We look forward to another excitingtrip. We hope you will join us!
