With ‘Winton Child,’ Eva PaddockHosted by Congregation B’nai Shalom117 E. Main Street, Westborough, MA
Sir Nicholas Winton was a young stockbroker, aged 29, when he traveled
to Prague at the request of a friend to witness the 200,000 refugees
there who were escaping the war.
Sir Nicholas Winton managed to find homes in the UK for 669 children and arranged for their transportation to safety. His story was not told until 1988, when a British television host, Esther Rantzen, learned of Winton, and found many of the children. Eva (Fleishmann) Paddock was one of those children. She will share her incredible story as we remember Nicholas Winton, who died in 2015 at the age of 106.

Don’t Skip the Seder; Make it a meaningful part of your Passover
National surveys tell us that Passover is one of the most observed Jew-
ish festivals by North American Jews — approximately 75% of us gather in some way during Pass-over. But for some, this gathering has become something of a “Jewish Thanksgiving” — a time for families to come together for a meal. That means that many are missing out on a great opportunity to connect to a powerful Jewish ritual — the Passover Seder. Too many experi-ences of long and painful evenings as children listening to the text of the Haggadah mumbled and stumbled over in Hebrew, and dense texts that are hard to decipher have a lot to do with this distancing from the ritual element of Passover.
It is time for a re-boot of the Pass-over Seder. We need to step back from the text in order to look at the bigger picture of the Seder, because in it we find a whole toolbox that can help us to create incredibly mean-ingful and relevant Jewish experi-ences for ourselves and our children. There are tastes, there are words and stories, there are questions and (sometimes) there are answers (but it is the search that is more impor-tant than the answers themselves). There are songs and, if we choose, there is storytelling through acting, reminiscing, the young asking the old, and the old asking the young.
The Haggadah tells us that we have to find a way to make the experience of gaining freedom from slavery come alive for each and every generation. This is not only to ensure that we don’t forget our heri-tage and our story; it is also because
some of the early generations of Rabbis who crafted this ritual understood that the way Jews related to this story in one generation or in one era would be different from the ways that it worked for Jews of another time.
The meaning and the purpose of Passover has changed over the cen-turies — it fulfilled a different need for us at different times. Once it was an agricultural celebration. At other times it was a story of hope when we were oppressed and discriminated against. In the last generation in the USA it became a vehicle for Jews now living freely to speak about their obligations to help free others from their shackles, giving birth to Haggadot that focused on civil rights, women’s rights, the environ-ment, and more.
If you have younger children, act out the story, imagine what you would have done if you were a slave and Moses promised that you would soon be free. Help your children empa-thize with people today who are oppressed. Discuss what you can do to help others and be a “Moses.” If you have teenagers and adults at your Seder, use the ritual to dis-cuss what freedom means for us today. Have a conversation about contemporary issues — refugees, freedom of speech, anti-semitism, and other forms of prejudice. Bring your own “freedom symbols” to the Seder – an object or a picture or a news article that you can share and discuss. Choose a cause to donate to, or a service project you can do
over Passover that resonates with the themes of your conversations. Don’t worry about reading every page of the Haggadah. Use the table of contents as your guide — there are fifteen steps of a Seder listed near the beginning of every Haggadah (that is why it is called a “Seder,” which means “Order”). The steps will help you cover the bases — Kiddush, a green vegetable or herb dipped in salt water, ritual hand washing,
story-telling (in your own way), explaining the symbols on
the Seder plate, sing-ing songs together, enjoying the meal, and so on. You don’t need to be an expert.
Passover is more than a meal — it is our invitation
to take ownership of this rich heritage and make it meaningful for our generation.
Oh, and Passover is also an opportunity to sample some dif-ferent wines. It doesn’t have to be Manischewitz! Sign up at www.juliosliquors.com (via their cal-endar page) to join me and a Kosher wine expert on April 7, 7–8:30 pm for a free evening of Kosher for Pass-over Wine tasting. We’ll be sampling wines from Israel, France, Italy, and more!

From Our President – Budget and Annual Meeting
Unseasonably warm temperatures this year are making spring feel like
it’s just around the corner. In addi-tional to budding trees and flowers, the spring also signals budget season and the CBS Annual Meet-ing — which will be held this year on Sunday, May 1 at 9:00 am. I urge everyone to attend this meet-ing, where you will hear a review of the congregation’s finances as well as updates on other congregational matters, and vote to elect new mem-bers to the Board of Directors.
At the time of this writing, a budget is being assembled for the upcoming fiscal year — FY2017. It’s important for all congregants to know how their membership dues and donations are spent. Your finan-cial contributions support a rich and diverse array of worship services, educational opportunities, and multi-generational programming, and allow our congregation to thrive as a vibrant Jewish community. I’d like to share with you here an overview of the synagogue’s income and expenditures based on the draft budget that is currently available.
The total budget for FY2017 will be approximately $1.3 million, an increase of about 2.25% over the prior year. The majority of our income — over 90% — comes from membership dues and reli-gious school tuition. Other sources include fundraising, building assessments, facility rentals and grants — the largest grant source being the Jewish Federation of Central Massachusetts. On the expense side, the largest items are salaries (60%), building mainte-nance and mortgage payments (17%), and general/administrative (8%). We continue to build into the budget a reserve for large-scale building repairs, such as to the roof, HVAC, elevator, and parking lot. The amount budgeted in FY2017 for these expenses is $66,000 (5%), equal to the amount budgeted for the current fiscal year.
We are also close to concluding a deal to install solar panels on a portion of the synagogue roof under a 25-year lease agreement, which is expected to result in substantial energy cost savings over the period of the agreement.
Efforts are ongoing to conduct long-range financial planning for the congregation, to ensure financial stability and sustainability well into the future.
I’d like to thank Larry Samberg, Chairman of the Finance Commit-tee, and the other Finance Com-mittee members for their hard work putting together the budget. Thanks are due to them, as well as to David Schultz, VP of Finance and Iris Kraus, Treasurer, for their year-round work on managing the financial affairs of the congregation. It’s an important and challenging responsibility, and I’m grateful for the time, energy and care that they devote to it.
More details about our finances will be available in the annual report, and at the annual meeting on May 1. I look forward to seeing you there.
L’Shalom,Kathy [email protected]
I’ve been a volunteer at Congre-gation B’nai Shalom ever since we moved here more than fifteen
years ago. Volunteering and being a part of a synagogue community was something that came naturally to me. My parents were early members of Temple Beth Shalom in Peabody, and after a childhood of watching them lead and participate in so many activities, it was just “what we do.”
As interim and now permanent Temple Administrator, I’ve learned that this position is a great fit, and all
those years as a volunteer helps me really appreciate the efforts of our many volunteers. I hope never to for-get how good it felt to be appreciated, and how important it is now that I am a member of the professional staff.
Taking the Chocolate Ball as an example, I was amazed at the dedica-tion of co-chairs Tracy Kaufman and Robin Baer, and how many others stepped up to the plate and offered their help when there was a sudden void due to a family emergency. Carole Grayson, Ruth Lubitz, and
Beth Blumberg, as well as the many others who helped make this event a success — please know how much your efforts were appreciated, and I know it’s just “what you do.’”
Let’s work together to make Con-gregation B’nai Shalom a place that we all commit to help, because as a temple community, it’s “what we all do together” that really matters. I am honored to be able to serve you as your Temple Administrator.

Parenting Tweens and Young Teens – Gail Epstein, M.S.Ed.Tuesday, April 12, 6 – 7:30 pm
Many changes are taking place dur-ing the tween and young teenage years. Your child is not only expe-riencing physical changes, but also social/emotional changes that have an impact on everyday life. At this workshop we will explore some of the issues parents face during this time and discuss strategies that help parents transition from parenting a child to parenting a teen. Find out why this is toddlerhood revisited.
Gail Epstein, M.S.Ed. has been working at Jewish Family & Chil-dren’s Service in Central MA since 2014, where she is the School-Based Consultant. In that capacity, Gail oversees and provides on-site obser-vations and consultation to teachers, with a focus on improving the social and emotional skills of students and decreasing challenging behaviors in the classroom. Gail has been work-ing in the field of education and par-enting for many years. In addition to her work for JFCS, Gail facilitates workshop/trainings for parents and educators on many topics.

From Our Family Educator
Taking our students on educa-
tional seminars is definitely a favorite part of my job. Last month, from March
4 to 7, Rabbi Gurevitz and I took eighteen 10th graders to the URJ’s Religious Action Center in Washing-ton D.C. for their L’Taken Seminar. At this unique program, our stu-dents joined over 400 Jewish teens from all over the country, the largest seminar yet as snowstorms caused many congregations to reschedule to that weekend. There they learned about a variety of public policy issues, explored the Jewish values surrounding those issues, and were taught the skills of being an effective advocate, all of which culminated on Monday when they spoke on Capitol Hill at the offices of Senator Elizabeth Warren and Representa-tives Jim McGovern and Joe Ken-nedy III.
We also visited the Newseum, went to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, saw the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, explored the Natural History and American Art Smithsonian Museums, and
participated in an outdoor Havdalah service at the Jefferson Memorial. Be sure to take a look at the B’nai Sha-lom Facebook page if you haven’t seen the pictures yet.
It is hard to put into words what the students and I experienced on this trip. How do you convey the level of excitement as our students mingled with hundreds of Jew-ish teens? How do you explain the energy of such large Shabbat services? How do you describe the smiles our students had when they wrote their speeches in record time and found out they were so good that they did not need to make any corrections to them? How do you put into words the looks on the faces of four of our students when Senator War-ren’s aide told them he would inform her of an upcoming legislative act that they had just educated him on?
Addition-ally, I can’t tell you how often I was
filled with pride from the way our students acted, from participating in their workshops, to treating others with respect, looking out for one another — and helping me. Rabbi Gurevitz needed to leave unexpect-edly for a funeral, and each one of them proved how mature they could be. They listened and did everything I asked of them, plus some. As we did our final “count off ” at Logan airport, I actually had to fight back tears — tears of sadness because I was going to miss being with them, and tears of joy because I was just so proud of all of them.
This L’Taken Seminar truly was a most incredible experience.

From Our Youth Educator – Confirmation Class in Washington, D.C.
Hi every-one. I’m loving that
spring (and daylight savings) are finally here. March was a busy month for
Family Education and 2/3 WAFTY. The Gezah (2&3) division had a meaningful experience sharing Jewish traditions, making their own mezuzot, and doing some Israeli
dancing at the end of February. The Anaf (4&5)division wrapped up the year of Family Education brainstorming and participating in activities focused on Jewish Heroes. The 2/3 WAFTY had a blast at Lazercraze with a record atten-dance — although it’s unanimous that next time, the event will include Lazertag. A huge todah rabbah to our Lazercraze chaperones Maureen Lubitz, Joanna Nealon, and Kathryn
Rose. April is proving to be just as exciting with our Model Seder on April 10 for grades K–3, madrichim training, and our last 2/3 WAFTY event scheduled for April 30 at Pump it Up. Wishing all of you a very Happy Passover (my favorite Jewish holiday).

TeenSafe Program on April 5 for High School ParentsOne in three teens reports knowing a friend or peer who has been hit, punched, kicked, slapped, or physi-cally hurt by a partner.
Please join us on Tuesday, April 5 from 6 – 7:30 pm for an important conversation about how to recognize and respond to controlling and abusive teen dating relation-ships.
Because abusive relationships are about more than physical violence, we will focus on what to look and listen for, as well as how to help and support a teen affected by dating abuse. Looking through a Jewish lens, we will examine this issue from a community perspective — how can parents recognize abuse when we see or hear about it and how can we best help and support our teens if they
experience abuse or if they have a friend that they are concerned about.
Abuse is an issue that can touch any teen, and so this workshop is not only for parents of daughters or parents whose children are actively dating. Both boys and girls can be victims of abuse and either might have a friend who turns to them for help or support. Our workshop will be facilitated by Julie Youdovin and Sara Berkowitz from Journey to Safety, the domestic abuse program of Jewish Family & Children’s Service. Sara, the program’s TeenSafe Youth Educator, has spent three class sessions with our ninth graders, and so will also talk about those classes and the projects that the students completed in the third week.

The Iran nuclear deal, which lifted international sanctions against Iran, continues to dominate headlines during this year’s run for the White House. Some voices think its was a major step forward to protecting Israel and the west from a nuclear-armed Iran. Others say we should never have given an inch to a “terrorist state” and that the deal will do nothing to stop Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
In 2014, Michael spent two weeks traveling across Iran, meeting with top religious, business, and academic leaders as well as ordinary citizens. Michael learned firsthand the impact of the international sanctions on the lives of Iranian people. He asked what the Iranians he met thought of America, Israel, and Western culture: are they ardent supporters of the current Iranian theocracy or are they victims of an outdated form of government that has ruled Iran since the 1979 Revolution? Using his photographs as a backdrop, Michael will share his experiences and facilitate a conversation about this important shift in US–Iranian relations.

Rachela, a Jewish émigré from Poland and the greatest female mathematician in history, passes away. She is reputed to have solved one of the most difficult problems in all of mathematics and has taken the solution with her. A ragtag group of mathematicians descend upon her shiva in Madison, Wisconsin, determined to find the proof. Reviewers call the novel hilarious and witty. Capturing the essence of Rachela’s long and dramatic life, the story illuminates humanity’s need not just to survive, but to achieve the impossible. This book won the Jewish Book Council’s 2014 award for Best Debut Novel. For more information, contact Barbara Barry at [email protected].

Nate Archambault becomes a Bar Mitzvah on April 2, 2016. Nate is the son of Tanya and Jim Archam-bault, and has two older sisters, Lily, age 18, and Lexi, age 16. Nate lives in Auburn and is in the seventh grade at the Auburn Middle High School, where he is get-ting academic high honors. In his free time Nate enjoys baseball, hockey, football, cooking, cards, and murder mysteries games. Nate has also helped out in the com-munity at sports fundraisers, food pantries, and home-less shelters. Nate’s favorite mitzvah project was helping friends in need.
Nate Levine becomes a Bar Mitzvah on April 9, 2016. Nate is the son of Sue and Dave Levine, and has an older brother, Matthew, age 15. Nate lives in Ashland and is in the seventh grade at Ashland Middle School where he is a high honors student. He plays saxophone for the Ashland Middle School Concert Band and also runs on the Ashland Middle School cross country team and spring track team. Nate is also a talented artist who enjoys sketching, cartooning, and drawing. Addition-ally he enjoys science and technology and is continu-ously seeking out opportunities to learn new things. He spends his summers at URJ Six-Points Sci Tech Academy, an overnight camp that combines science, Judaism, and fun. In Nate’s free time he enjoys running, hiking, skiing, football, cooking, drawing, and playing
video games. One of Nate’s favorite mitzvah projects was being a member of the Ovarian Cancer Brigade team for the Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk. He walked a 6-mile route for the past four years in honor of his grandmother who passed away from ovarian cancer in 2009. This is his first year fundraising and he reached Young Pacesetter level - raising more than $1300. His other favorite mitzvah project was helping serve food at Northborough Community Meals.
Natalie Chace will become a Bat Mitzvah on April 30, 2016. Natalie lives in Westborough with her parents Lisa and Bill Chace, younger brother, Ian, age 11, and younger sister, Molly, age 7. She is in the seventh grade at Sarah W. Gibbons Middle School. In her free time, Nata-lie loves to sing, perform in musicals, and read. When not on the stage, you can find Natalie on the softball pitching mound for Westborough Softball. Lastly, Nata-lie is an avid Disney fan. For her Bat Mitzvah project, Natalie and her siblings held a neighborhood lemonade and cookie sale to raise money for the Baypath Humane Society. With the proceeds, they bought lots of pet sup-plies and treats, and delivered everything to the shelter.

Community
Michael H. Federman, 78, husband of Toby, father, grandfather, friend, and popular member of the com-munity, died on March 4 after a long battle with multiple sclerosis. Mike was a founding member of Congregation B’nai Shalom.
My friendship with Mike Feder-man began in 1973, when we car-pooled together. We spent many hours discussing the merits of the Westboro Jewish Womens Associa-tion changing itself to include the spouses of its members and to share their common Jewish heritage in the wilds of Westborough area. He led the movement to create the West-boro Jewish Association. To Mike’s delight, the Westboro Jewish Asso-ciation began with a membership of over fifteen individuals.
From meetings held in private homes and apartments to the com-munity room at the Fountainhead Apartments, the Good Shepard Lutheran Church etc., Mike wit-nessed and reveled in the influx of Jewish families to the greater West-borough area. Watching the West-boro Jewish Association morph into what is now Congregation B’nai Sha-lom delighted him to no end. Not only did he serve as one of the first Presidents of Congregation B’nai Shalom, Mike was the first Shofar blower during our High Holy Day Services from the days of services at the Unitarian Church in North-borough to the services in our new sanctuary. Through his efforts the number of Shofar blowers reached record numbers through the years.
Those congregants who observed the second day of Rosh Hashanah were welcomed by Mike and his sons, Josef, Aaron, and Danny, who served as ushers.
While we mourn the untimely passing of one of our founding members of Congregation B’nai Sha-lom, we celebrate his foresight and contributions to making Congrega-tion B’nai Shalom such a vibrant, integral, and important part of the greater Westborough community.
May his memory be for a blessing.
