ANAT HOFFMAN
COMES TO
CONGREGATION B’NAI ISRAEL — GALVESTON
FRIDAY, 02 DECEMBER 2016
Anat Hoffman is one of the world’s most influential Jews
(Jerusalem Post, 2013). As founder and former director of
Neshot HaKotel (Women of the Wall), Hoffman organized
and participated in a nearly 30-year civil disobedience
campaign that resulted in the recent history-making plan to
include a progressive, egalitarian prayer space at the Kotel
(Wailing or Western Wall). As current Director of the Israeli
Religious Action Center (IRAC), she continues to fight against
the status quo, giving voice to and standing up for equal
access and treatment of progressive Jews in Israel. In 2013,
Israel’s Haaretz newspaper named her their “Person of the
Year” for bringing these neglected rights of fellow Jews to the
forefront of the world Jewry’s consciousness.

Dearest CBI Family,
My, how the time has flown! Can you believe it?! In one month, we’ll be celebrating our
third High Holy Days together. And, while there have been many changes within our
congregational home over this time, resulting in us being one of the fastest growing, most
dynamic congregations in the United States right now, one area which has not changed as
much has been the High Holy Days. These Days of Awe are, for many members of our
Family of Faith, the touchstone of their Jewish lives. And, I deeply respect that.
Over this past year, every one of us was invited to take part in a collective chesbon
hanefesh, a collective accounting of our community’s soul via — what will be — an annual
Satisfaction Survey: reflecting on what has gone really well and what things can be im-
proved upon, as well as soliciting feedback on how we may work together to make those
positive adjustments. Everything was on the table: from my service as your spiritual leader to
the quality of our building, from our programs to our communication.
One of the many things we learned from this congregational accounting was that it may now be time to make
a few slight adjustments to our High Holy Day observances. Given that Rosh HaShanah this year will begin on
Sunday evening, 02 October 2016 and Yom Kippur on Tuesday evening, 11 October 2016, I wanted to share
these changes with you now so that you may prepare accordingly, as we all can appreciate that change — no
matter how slight — is never an easy thing to manage.
1. Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur Evening Services to begin at 7:00 pm instead of 8:00 pm. This was a
reoccurring theme from both solicited and unsolicited feedback over the years. There are many reasons for
which this time change was desired; among them was to allow families with younger children the ability to
attend, as an 8:00 pm start time was much too late.
2. Tashlich (Casting Away Sins Ceremony) on Rosh HaShanah at Rabbi’s & Christina’s Home. Graciously, over
the past many years, Fredell and Lewis Rosen have hosted this ceremony on Yom Kippur. With their
blessing, this year Christina and I are honored to host this event on Rosh HaShanah, making it a CBI Family
get together at our home, which will include my mother’s delicious Honey Cake!
3. Instead of Babysitting, we now have Jewish Youth Programming during all High Holy Day Services. Thanks
to our investment in a Jewish Youth Area Coordinator, we can now provide high-quality High Holy Day
programming that will be fun, socially engaging and educational. It is available for all youth elementary
school age and younger. Middle and high school students are encouraged to attend the main service.
4. Cemetery Services to honor our loved ones has been moved back to Sunday. For the past couple of years,
we have held the cemetery service on a Saturday. By popular demand, we are moving it back to the
Sunday afternoon between the High Holy Days: 09 October 2016. If you have a relative buried at either
our 42nd St. Cemetery or our 61st St. Cemetery, please plan on joining us that day to fulfill the mitzvah.
Those are the changes. And, while I pray these adjustments will help us all have a more meaningful observance
at CBI this year, what I truly believe makes our High Holy Days delightful and insightful are (no… not my ser-
mons) but our willingness to come together as a community in a spirit of acceptance, renewal and love. Let us
remember that we are each ambassadors of our CBI Family. As we gather on the High Holy Days and through-
out the year, let us remember it is our task to extend our hands and hearts in a warm welcome to all!
Looking forward to seeing you throughout the month of September, as we warm up to the Jewish new year!

Divrei haNasi: Words of the President
A Heads-Up for What’s Going Down!
Dear Congregants and Friends of Congregation B’nai Israel,
Program/Service Guide and Directory 2016-2017: As promised, in last month’s bulletin, you
should have received our annual CBI Program/Service Guide and Directory in your mailbox.
Beyond Shabbat services for young and old, and special Holy Day celebrations, we offer
continuing Jewish Education, Scholars and Artists in Residence, Community Engagement
activities and events sponsored by our auxiliary groups: the Sisterhood, Ah-Mens Club, and
GiFTY Youth Group. I believe we have something for everyone, so please take a minute to
look it over to be sure you can plan to attend something of interest to you.
If you did not receive yours, please call Melissa, our full-time office assistant. The number
for the Temple is 409-765-5796.
Our 150th Anniversary Celebration Year: Planning for this celebration continues at the Board and Committee
level. I will share with the congregation the full breadth of these efforts on Rosh Hashanah. I mention this in
September’s bulletin even though the High Holy Days are in October because they are so early in that month:
Rosh HaShanah eve is October 2nd. Although the president traditionally speaks on Rosh Hashanah day, I will
be making my remarks on Rosh Hashanah eve this year. Please make sure you can be there.
Wishing you the best September ever, where the weather is good, the tourists are gone and we have this
beautiful island to ourselves. Looking forward to seeing you at the Temple!
Best,
Barbara Sasser
CBI President

Sisterhood September: A Month of Renewal
By Saralyn Richard
Hey CBI Ladies!
September is a month of renewal, not just because of the High Holy Days, not just
because of our youth going back to school, but because of the exciting programming
your Sisterhood kicks off this month.
All CBI women are invited to the “Hats Off to Wine & Women” celebration
honoring our CBI Volunteer of the Year: Sara Salzman. The festivities are set for
Sunday, 25 September 2016 from 2 – 4 p.m. at the home of B.J. Herz: 2902
Dominique, Galveston. Bring your good cheer, and wear a hat (optional)!
Also, please bring canned goods and other non-perishable food items during our
High Holy Day Food Drive in partnership with the Galveston Ministerial Alliance and Ball High’s
“Share Your Holidays Food Drive,” benefiting local residents through the Galveston County Food
Bank. Some of these donations will also adorn the pulpit throughout the High Holy Days, as a little
reminder to others to contribute as well!
Please join us for all these delightful events. We are hoping for participation from every single one of
you! Remember, we can’t spell “success” without u!

CBI YOUTH: A BLESSING FOR THEM AND FOR US ALL!
DT Panter — CBI’s Jewish Youth Area Coordinator (JYAC)
To my CBI Friends,
August seemed to fly by, and September 11th (the start of Religious School) is fast approaching. I would
like to thank everyone for making this month’s Family Shabbat such a success, with 100 of you joining us
for services and our family meal! I had particular fun constructing our Graham Cracker Beit Hamikdashim
(Holy Temples) and devouring them in memory of Tisha b’Av.
I also want to give a huge thanks to Jody, Kim, Caleb, Chloe and Caylee Stein for opening up their home
and hosting our amazing BACK TO SCHOOL POOL PARTY. I’m sure everyone got enough food and
then some... especially the great grilling master-pieces of chicken and hamburgers; it was all fantastic!
We have been working hard to get ready for this CBI Religious School year as we are expecting to have
close to 50 students! I want to thank: Nikki Pollack (Kitah Aleph), Rene Schwartz (Kitah Bet), Chuck and
Randi Betts (Kitah Gimel), Steve Feldman (Kitah Dalet), Kathrine and Geri Druckman (Kitah Hey) as well
as ISJL Ed Fellow Elias Chajet, GiFTY Youth Leader Lexi Conrad and Rabbi Marshal Klaven for giving up their Sunday and
joining me for our Teacher-in-Services, which was both productive and fun.
I would like to close with a blessing for those who are starting the new school year: “May the God of our ancestors Abra-
ham, Isaac and Jacob, Sarah, Rebecca, Leah and Rachel, bless us as we move through our academic year. May God bless
us with patience, understanding and courage during those times of great challenge. May God be with us as we strive to
live up to the expectation of our parents and teachers, enabling us to be a light to our peers.” I hope you’ll join me in
saying and living a big... AMEN!

RE: CBI High Holy Day Memorial Book for 5777
Dearest CBI Family Member,
Shalom, may these words greet you in peace. On behalf of our CBI President Barbara Sasser and our entire
Board of Trustees, we hope that you had an inspiring summer. It’s hard to believe but the High Holy Days are
just around the corner, kick-starting another amazing year of deeper relationships, stronger minds, and healthier
spirits!
Speaking of the High Holy Days, once again CBI will be publishing a Memorial Book for this sacred time of re-
flection, repentance, and renewal. The Memorial Book includes the names of our departed loved ones, allowing
their blessed memories to stir our consciousness during this holy season and to spur us into greater action in the
year to come.
If you would like your family members and/or friends to be included in this year’s Memorial Book, please fill
out the form below. If the names for your remembrance are the same as last year’s, please indicate this on the
form by writing: “same as last year.” A suggested minimum donation per name is $18. Please complete the form
below and return with any contribution to CBI’s office by Monday, 12 September 2016.

We understand that families are dynamic forces, always in various states of change. For going through these
transitions of life, your congregational family of CBI offers you a heartfelt yasher koach (may you continue to
move forward with strength).
As members of your extended family, we ask that you keep us informed of the various simchas (joys: births,
achievements, honors, etc.) as well as tzurus (heartache: challenges, illness, death of loved ones, etc.) in your
lives, so that we may have the opportunity to be there for you.
Days of Special Significance:
Let us reach out and connect as family.

Yahrzeits
זכרונם לברכה.May their memories endure — through us — as blessings to others.
In addition to honoring your loved one’s memory through a thoughtful and lasting gift to CBI
and its mission, we — as your extended family — encourage you to attend the Erev (Evening)
Shabbat Service immediately following the anniversary of your loved one’s death. During the
Friday night’s service, which starts at 6:00 pm, your loved one’s name will be recited for a
blessing prior to the communal recitation of the Kaddish Yatom (the Mourner’s Kaddish).
