Torah and T’filah – Books of Prophets • Saturdays, 8-9:30 am, LibraryAll are welcome to our weekly Torah study discussion group. We are on a new cycle of study, reading the weekly haftarot that draw from the books of prophets. All texts are studied in English. This group takes the text as its starting point, but much of our conversation focuses on making connections to experiences and current affairs. We start with the opening blessings of a morning service to help foster an attitude of gratitude, and close with a prayer for healing and mourner’s kaddish.

One of the things that makes Congregation B’nai Shalom a very special place to work

is the strength and quality of our professional team/lay leadership partnership. The collaborative, co-operative, and non-hierarchical culture we operate within at this congregation is, if not unique, quite rare and very special.

Congregations are more likely to be successful, thriving, positive and engaging places to be when the vision and priorities of the profes-sional staff are in alignment with the vision and priorities of lay leader-ship. It is what enables us, together, to create a culture for our commu-nity and a shared set of values.

So, at a big picture level, it feels as though we have truly hit our stride this year in the way that we are vision-ing and working together as we go forward in very important ways. In many ways, my work this year has been working alongside lay leaders to provide support and contributions, where appropriate, as we do our work together. Let me highlight a few areas where I’ve been most involved this year in some of that work.

Working with Anita Backer, we launched CBS Cares this year. Instead of a small band of volunteers who were responding time and time again to short-term needs of congre-gants recovering from illness or loss, we wanted to make our whole con-gregation into a caring community. CBS Cares does that by grouping our members geographically, and letting them know the scope of the need, and the street that the member lives on, only providing further details so that help can be provided once you respond to the CBS Cares email to tell us that you can help.

Our Social Action committee took great strides forward this year to find ways to make it easier for more people to contribute and shape our social action agenda. Our agenda around homelessness includes our desire to respond to the needs of ref-ugees, and we have a working group looking at how we can do that. We created family education mornings to bring social justice into the Reli-gious school. A new working group is looking to develop some interfaith partnerships that could lead to some joint programs in the coming year.

In Adult Education, we ran our first joint Intro to Judaism class with Beth Tikvah and Emanuel-Sinai. We successfully applied for a grant to launch Scientists in Synagogues and over a hundred people attended our keynote event with VP at Google, Dr. Jeremy Wertheimer.

Working with our VP Member-ship, Karen Rothman, with admin-istrative support from Steve Winer, we re-formed a diverse membership committee that made, as one of its primary goals, going beyond the activities that we had in place to wel-come and integrate new members. A couple of events earlier this year formed the beginning of some-thing that had a soft launch — CBS Social Clubs — as we look to ways of creating more social and cultural opportunities for connection among our members.

We also launched an Interfaith Family advisory group that met three times during the year to share experiences, do some learning together, and their ideas and input was the impetus for us hosting our first large scale, catered, Congrega-tional Seder, which one hundred and eleven people attended.

This past Janu-ary, a group of our members joined me, along with member of B’nai Torah of Sud-bury, for a Jewish Mission trip to Cuba. We are now planning a 2018 Israel trip, again in partnership with B’nai Torah. We hope to have a full itinerary and pricing ready by end of June and I’d love to hear from any others who are interested in learning more.

I’ve spoken a lot this year of the need to make lovingkindness core to how we live our lives as Jews. During the year I’ve had very posi-tive exchanges with several heads of school and school superintendents as they seek to respond to words or symbols of hate that have invaded their schools. In Westborough, the town has created a Diversity Com-mittee, meeting monthly, which has enabled me to meet leaders from the Muslim, Sikh, Christian, and Hindu communities, along with representa-tives from social services, the police and fire services, as we seek to build strong lines of communication and respond to each other’s needs.

Internally, we have been creating more and more paths for potential connection of our members, and externally we are building relation-ships and establishing ourselves as a venue and as a community that reaches out beyond our own bound-aries to work with others who are also seeking to respond to our world with lovingkindness. There is more work to be done, but we can look back on the past year knowing that, with lay leadership and a professional team working hand-in-hand, we are

Over the past several years, I have observed our educational and youth programs and watched the relationship steadily grow between formal

and informal education. I hold a strong belief that mid-dle and high school students need diverse tools and mul-tiple points of contact with our synagogue to develop strong Jewish identities and I believe that our program is moving in a direction that gives students options to con-nect to Judaism in ways they find engaging. I believe our continuing task is to create a culture where every aspect of our program reinforces our goals of retaining students beyond their Bar or Bat Mitzvah and developing a rich program of study, social interaction and Jewish culture.

With all this in mind, we will continue to focus our energy on increasing the quality, participation in and breadth of our programming, and the depth of our inter-personal relationships. We will be continuing to offer social opportunities for students in 2/3 WAFTY (grades 2 & 3), WAFTY Lite (grades 4 & 5), WAFTY 678, and Sr. WAFTY (grades 9–12).

Programming will be monthly for the younger WAFTY groups, while Sr. WAFTY will continue its present programming for all Jewish teens in grades 9–12, offering social, educational, Tikkun Olam (repairing the world), and cultural programs. For the first time in many years, we now have a WAFTY representative on the Regional NFTY-NE Board. Our newly elected student board, with input and guidance from our Youth Educator, Debbi Morin, will continue to create a series of exciting events.

From Our Family Educator

As I reflect on the school year, I fondly remem-ber experiences with amazing religious school families as part of Family Education events. I

had a blast with our Anaf students at our WAFTY Lite events and our Gezah students with 2/3 WAFTY events. Cooking with Chai school students was wonderful, albeit it quite messy at times! Doesn’t food taste better when it is messy? Mazel Tov to our graduating seniors and our confirmands. I look forward to welcoming new madrichim in the fall, as well as welcoming back so many returning madrichim, each of whom enhances the expe-riences of religious school children and skillfully aids our faculty.

I’d like to take the opportunity to thank our amazing B’nai Shalom teaching faculty and wish them a restful and rejuvenating summer. It has been such an honor to work with each of you and I look forward to the 2017–18 year together.

Have a great summer, everyone.Cheryl [email protected]

From Our Temple Administrator – Circle Game

So as we come to the end of fiscal 2017 here at Congregation B’nai Shalom, there are a couple

of songs that are stuck in my head.First of all is Joni Mitchell’s Circle

Game (which has been known to lead to the need for tissues in the Winer household, but that’s a story for another day). “The seasons, they go round and round….” The life of a synagogue and a congregation is always marked by seasonal change, but those seasons recur year after year: Membership renewal, B’nai Mitzvah season, the start of Reli-gious School, High Holy Days, Cha-nukah and the winter break, B’nai Mitzvah season, Purim to Passover to Shavuot, and we’re back at the beginning again.

By now you should have received

your renewal information. We’re always trying to make the process as simple and seamless as possible, and don’t hesitate to call me or our bookkeeper, Marsha Beals, if you have any questions.

The second song is Summertime (from Porgy and Bess, although I am partial to the Janis Joplin version). They tell us “the livin’ is easy”, but while there’s definitely a slower pace in general, this summer promises to be especially exciting and busy as we prepare for the launch of PALS, the Play and Learn School at CBS. I am just thrilled at the prospect of having this building alive with the happy sounds of preschoolers. While we’re busy doing all the prep work for the High Holy Days, the start of Religious School, and all the

other events on the annual circle of our congre-gation’s life, I do miss the won-derful cacoph-ony of Sunday mornings and Tuesday afternoons and the energy our students bring.

Also, I want to take the opportu-nity to welcome Rayna Meleedy to the temple staff. She’ll be the pleas-ant voice you’ll hear and the pleas-ant face that will greet you mornings in the office. Stop in and say hello when you have a minute.

Enjoy your summer!Steve [email protected]

From Our Youth Educator – Camp

June is here, school is almost over, and summer plans are beginning to take shape. For

those of you who send your children to an overnight Jewish camp, that means it is time to start buying the bug spray and suntan lotion, finding white shirts for Shabbat, and stuffing everything needed for camp into an extra-large duffel bag. And while you will no doubt miss your chil-dren, you know how happy they will be and how much they will grow during their summer away.

Please let me know which camps and on what dates your children are attending so I can send them letters during the summer.

If you do not yet send your chil-dren to an overnight Jewish camp, the summer is a great time to take tours of the various camps to see what each

has to offer. I would be happy to tell you about our URJ camps — Crane Lake, Eisner, and Six Points Sci-tech Academy. We also have students at Young Judea, Avodah, Bauercrest, Modin, Tel Noar, Tevya, Pembroke, etc., and I can arrange a conversation for you if you would like to learn about these camps.

Besides the traditional activities held at summer camps, there are now Jewish camps that specialize in science, drama, sports, and ecology. With so many choices, there is a camp out there that will be right for your children.

While the thought of sending your children away to camp can cause some apprehension, you should know that it has been contin-ually proven that spending summers at Jewish camp creates adults who

are committed to the Jewish community and engaged in Jewish practice. Stu-dents who attend overnight camps have a more successful freshman year in college since they have had practice being independent and experiencing new situations. I would be happy to talk to you about why this experience is so important.

I look forward to hearing from you.

With wishes for a wonderful summer,

Debbi [email protected]

From Our President – Report on our Goals this Past Year

Happy new temple year all. Thank you to all of those who attended the Annual

Meeting. I want to share the suc-cesses of our last fiscal year with those who were not present.

This was a busy year for the clergy, the Board, and the lay leaders. As a board we set four primary goals this year — a focus on membership, fundraising, and financial planning; reorganization of our education committees; some behind-the-scenes “organizational work;” and then the addition of evaluating and making a recommendation on starting a preschool at Congregation B’nai Shalom. In the year-end check-boxes, we had a couple of exception-ally meets and two partials.

In terms of membership, huge kudos to Karen Rothman and her committee members. They have developed new ways to connect members to each other — through a very successful revised Kesher pro-gram to welcome in new members, programs for interfaith families, and events to bring members together around common interests. From hiking to making eggrolls, we’re get-ting out of the congregation’s walls and building bonds.

In terms of financial planning, we launched the Life and Legacy pro-gram, chaired by Mike Manning, to help CBS begin a conversation with congregants about legacy gifts to help ensure the long-term financial future of the congregation. We hosted a

successful Chocolate Ball gala and we managed a number of additional fundraisers throughout the year, including selling student-designed greeting cards and a Hanukkah book-fair. Next year, we’ll be expanding our efforts to understand our short-to-medium term financial planning opportunities and needs. If that’s your sweetspot and you have some time to offer, please let me know.

In terms of education, this year Lisa Chase brought under one umbrella the Early Childhood, School & Youth, Adult Ed and Library committees. YELL, which stands for Youth, Education, and Lifelong Learning serves to provide an opportunity to coordinate our programming and support a more cohesive set of education deliver-ables. Next year YELL will look to expand its focus on the adult educa-tion side of the spectrum of family and congregational life — please let us know if you can help.

Thank you to Heidi Swanick and Steve Winer who took on the “behind the scenes” work of updat-ing our policies and procedures manuals so that we have a more efficient and up-to-date set of docu-ments that govern items like build-ing rental policies and communica-tions practices. Next year, we tackle building our volunteer reserves.

And at the end of last summer, the board was faced with an opportunity and a big decision — whether CBS should open a Jewish preschool

following the closing of the Boroughs JCC. Steven Goldstein and his commit-tee evaluated the finances, logistics, and congregational receptiveness to launching a preschool. I am pleased that we are working on opening PALS at CBS — the Play and Learn School — with our found-ing director Amy Scott. If you want more information about the school, please visit the website at www.palsatcbs.org.

Many thanks to those stepping off the Board, those continuing, and those joining us next year. I appreci-ate time and expertise you provide. A special thanks to Eileen Samberg who is stepping off the board, but continues to put all of our words onto pages in the monthly Bulletin so that you can stay informed. (Now she has to read that, edit it and make sure it gets into print!) In the day of texts and emails, we know that the temple Bulletin continues to be a good vehicle to inform our congre-gation, so Eileen, I appreciate your support — and deadline reminders.

I am looking forward to kicking off the work with our new Board and am sure that next year we’ll have quite the list of accomplishments to share.

L’Shalom,Allison [email protected]

moving in the right direction. We are grateful to every one of you who sup-port the mission of this community, every one of you who gave of yourself

in some way to help us in the work, and all of you who serve as leaders of this congregation. I am also, as always, so grateful to have such a

dedicated and talented professional staff who partner together in the work that we do.

YELL – Youth Engagement & Lifelong LearningEarly Childhood ActivitiesThanks to everyone who attended the Early Childhood Passover Tot Shabbat. Thank you also to Rabbi Rachel and Beth Speigel for leading the event and the songs.

We hope you can join us for our last event of the school year on June 10. We will be meeting at Haskell School Playground in Westborough from 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm. The kids can play on the playground while the adults schmooze. We hope to see you there.

If you have any questions or would like to become more involved in Early Childhood, please contact Mar-cia Hoffman at [email protected].

YELL Thank you to the many of you who responded to our survey last month. We heard from more than 60% of families with children in K–6 grade and your feedback is greatly appreciated.

Based on your input we will work to enhance com-munication with families about what your children are learning on Sundays and weekday Hebrew classes. We

will look to create an easy-to-find school page on the temple website with handy tools and resources like curriculum, a handbook, and recorded prayers. We’ll be working with the Board, temple staff, and parents to coordinate grade-level activities either just for parents or with families.

Next year, we will also focus on parent volunteer-ing for school initiatives in “manageable mitzvah” bites — short durations and at a time that works for you.

Lastly, stay tuned for opportunities to provide addi-tional feedback on our monthly family service — Shab-bat Rishon — and accompanying dinner.

Our first quarterly meeting of the 2017–2018 year will be in early September and we hope you’ll join us. This group will continue to evolve next year and all new members are welcome.

For any questions, please contact YELL co-chairs Rachel Bernzweig at [email protected] or Michelle Weinstein at [email protected].

Member Activities

B’nai Shalom Book Group Thursday, June 15 and Monday, July 24On June 15, please join us to discuss The Two-Family House, a novel by Lynda Cohen Loigman, an engross-ing, multigenerational mystery beginning in a Brooklyn brownstone in 1947, and continuing with the families’ move to Long Island several years later. During a blizzard, a mid-wife delivers two babies at home min-utes apart. The mothers are sisters by marriage. Raising their families side by side, the mothers share a bond forged before and during that night. As the years progress, their once-deep friendship begins to unravel. No one knows why, and it appears that no one can stop it.

Marsha Nourse will join us to help facilitate the discussion and will provide some history of Jewish immigrants in the same decades going from Ellis Island to New York’s Lower East Side to Brooklyn, and then to Long Island.

On July 24, we will discuss Saving Sophie by Ronald Balson, a fast-paced thriller covering the globe from Hebron to Hawaii. The narra-tive’s threads include kidnapping, embezzlement, murder, courtroom scenes, Israeli-American anti-terrorist techniques, and romances. Some of the characters continue from Balson’s earlier novel Once We Were Brothers.

The protagonist is Jack Sommers, a Jewish accountant and widower. His father-in-law, suspected Palestin-ian terrorist Dr. Arif-al-Zahani, fights Jack for custody of his daughter Sophie and eventually kidnaps her. He resides in an impenetrable com-pound in Hebron. Jack and an Israeli operative go there to ransom Sophie, but also to thwart a suspected deadly plot of large proportions.

Both meetings will be held at B’nai Shalom, 7 pm. All B’nai Shalom members are welcome. For more information, please contact Barbara Barry at [email protected].

Stay on top of what’s happening! Get involved!CBS Board of Directors meetings are open to all congregants, and are generally held on the fourth Wednesday of the month. If you’d like to get an advance copy of the agenda, send an email to [email protected] and we’ll add you to the list.

You can look at minutes from Board meetings, as well as the Bulletin, present and past, and the Member Directory by clicking Member Resources under the Membership tab on the home page, or by going to http://www.cbnaishalom.org/members-resources-protected/. There is a password needed, but you can call or email the office to get it.

Membership update: Let’s get together this Summer! Our CBS Social Clubs are off and running, but it’s never too late to get involved! We started with dinner at Margaritas in February and a crash course on making eggrolls followed by Chinese take-out in April at the Breeze’s home. Now it’s time to get outside and enjoy the long, warm days ahead.

Here’s what’s coming up this summer:

Walk/Hike June 24 or 25Come hike with us during the weekend of June 24–25 in Ashland State Park. There is no charge for admission or parking. The walk is a scenic 4 ½ – 5-mile loop around the lake. About half way around or at the end those who wish can stop for a BYO picnic meal or snack, and there is also a beach at the end (or beginning, depending on which way we walk) with some picnic tables. We are planning on 2 pm on June 24, but if the weather is just too hot or too wet, we will do a 10 am walk on Sunday. People of any age who can walk (or be carried) the distance are welcome. Please email me at [email protected] so I know you are coming and can let you know about any changes.

Boston Harbor ExcursionCome away with me: CBS does Boston Harbor. We are still in the planning stages for a Boston Harbor cruise. There are a wide variety of cruises available that tour historic sights and islands. Prices and times vary. Be on the lookout for details on the Weekly Connections.

BBQ hosted by the RabbisThe annual barbeque at Rabbis Rachel and Suri’s house is on August 6, 12–4 pm, rain date August 13. This is a great opportunity to reconnect with friends and meet new people while watching Grill Master Rachel presiding over those hotdogs and hamburgers while Pied Piper Suri enchants the children with games and songs. Watch for informa-tion in the Weekly Connections.

We’ll advertise all these events on the Weekly Connections , but the times and dates are determined by those who sign up to receive the emails of a particular social group. If you are part of the email group, you can plan events at times and settings that work best for you.

How do you get on the small group mailing lists? Go to www.cbnaishalom.org/lets-have-fun/ (it’s also on the membership tab), fill out the online form to indicate what you are interested in, and of course add any suggestions for other groups. You’ll only get email from the groups you check. Your email will only be shared with members of that group and only temple mem-bers can join.

You can also join a group by sending email to Karen Rothman at VP [email protected].

Hope to see you on the trail on June 24.

Sisterhood ActionSisterhood had a wonderful year culminating with the Annual Kallah on May 13. Over thirty women gathered to listen, learn, and discuss with author and keynote speaker, Joan Ditzion, who spoke about aging gracefully, and phys-ical therapist Stacey Berger, who spoke on pelvic health. Thank you to the Kallah committee — Cheryl Kasof, Ruth Lubitz and Nancy Bosco — and everyone who helped make that day special.

We look forward to a new year

of interesting programming includ-ing our Open House in September and Member Appreciation Dinner in November. We will continue playing Mah Jongg every Tuesday at 11:00 am – 1:00 pm through the summer. New players are always wel-come. This year we hope to add new programming including community service, fundraising, education and social.

When you renew your temple membership, be sure to renew your Sisterhood membership also.

Be a part of a group of energetic, friendly, and welcoming women. We plan events to enhance the temple community as well as a number of activities just to have fun among ourselves. As we begin the new year, join us and find out what Sisterhood can offer you and what you have to offer Sisterhood.

CBS CaresCBS Cares, formerly known as Yad b’Yad, is our congregation’s way of giving a helping hand to those in need. For example, we may help by providing a few meals, helping to shop for or set up a shiva, or perhaps by helping with a few rides to doctor appointments. Requests for your help will arrive by email and those requests will be sent to all congregants in your general geographic area. So far it has been working nicely. This month we would like to thank Joel and Bobbi Feinblatt for their help. If you are interested in becoming more involved in the work of CBS Cares, please send me an email.
