Our 150th – How do we ensure the 200th?

One hundred fifty years is a long time. Toledo had been incorporated for only 29 years. The year before, Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, and Vice President Andrew Johnson became President. In the first 50 years of our congregational history, our predecessors would hear about the great Chicago fire, Custer’s Last Stand, dedication of the Statue of Liberty, opening of Ellis Island as the main entry for new Americans, the Spanish-American War, the Wright Brothers’ first flight, the San Francisco Earthquake, and the beginning of the First World War. Toledo institutions founded during our first half century included the Toledo University of Arts and Trades (now the University of Toledo), the Toledo Public Library, Libbey Glass Company, Tiedke’s Department Store, Toledo Zoological Gardens, the Toledo Museum of Art, and the Willys-Overland automobile plant. We have to wonder if they could have imagined what our lives and world would be like now. So how did we survive as a congregation? Some luck must have been involved, but that alone would not suffice. The key ingredients were provided by our founders and all those who came before us. What were those ingredi-ents? The very same that are the heart of our anniversary year activities: celebration of their Jewish faith, honor-ing their heritage, and inspiring others, including us. That is how we got to be 150. These same ingredients, plus perhaps a little luck, and certainly with planning for the future of Congregation B’nai Israel, are what we need as we move forward. What will our world look like 150 years from now, or even 50 years from now? What can we do to build a wonderful future for those who come after us? We must do all we can so that those future members of our congregation will be inspired by our actions, so that they will know that we have honored not only our past but also our future, and so that they may celebrate their presence as a healthy and joyous Conservative Jewish community right here in the greater Toledo area. We certainly have a lot of our congregants hard at work to bring these ideas to reality. I am thinking not only of our wonderful army of volunteers for the anniversary celebrations this year, but also the many others who con-tribute to make our kehilla, our sacred community, the wonderful extended family that is CBI. You may ask yourself how you might contribute. Well, I will try to answer that in future columns. But for now, let me just say that I and the other members of the board, Cantor Lichterman, and our office staff have lots of ideas and are eager to help you get involved. Your fellow congregants will be inspired, feel honored, and will celebrate with you. Happy anniversary to us! Howard Rosenberg

“Together then, let us build on past achievements, strengthening the vital traditions we have inherited, while simultaneously and boldly adapting to changes that our future may necessitate. Thus will we ensure that Congregation B’nai Israel remains in the forefront of Jewish Toledo, serving the needs of congrega-tion and community, Torah and Clal Israel, and ultimately in the service of God.”

Hazzan Ivor Yitzchak Lichterman

“We owe a great debt of gratitude to our founders and those who worked with diligence and love this past century and a half so that we may have this vibrant congregation today. At this time in our history, we can rededicate ourselves to repay that debt by working with equal diligence and love to ensure a bright future for Congregation B’nai Israel, and for the Toledo Jewish community.”

Howard C. Rosenberg, President

From our very first days in

downtown Toledo to our

current home in Sylvania,

we are grateful to reach

this occasion

“I am very grateful to be part of this remarkable celebration. My family has been connected to B’nai Israel for more than 75 years--Rabbi Goldberg officiated at my grandparent's wedding, and my father celebrated his Bar Mitzvah there. I have many fond memories of attending holiday services with my grandmother and the rest of my extended family. As I started my rabbinic studies, I became profound-ly aware of the impact of B’nai Israel's leadership on American Judaism. I was especially inspired by Rabbi Pearlmutter's work in creating a more inclu-sive approach to Conservative Judaism. I very much look forward to the opportunity to honor this com-munity that means so much to me and my family”.

Rabbi Daniel Stein

I am very excited to come back to Toledo for this occasion. I look back at my years at B’nai Israel as ones filled with lots of good memories, wonderful friends, and spiritual growth. It will be wonderful to reconnect with friends and see the progress B’nai Israel has made and where it will head in the years ahead.

JEWISH FAMILY SERVICE FALL HOLIDAY FOOD DRIVE

JEWISH COMMUNITY, COME JOIN IN AND HELP TO MAKE IT A HUGE SUCCESS!!!

B’nai Israel USY (BITUSY) will be collecting non-perishable items for the Jewish Family Service Food Bank. Stop by the Synagogue and pick up a paper grocery bag (or use your own).

Bring your filled bag to B’nai Israel during the High Holidays.

VOLUNTEERS WILL TRANSPORT BAGS TO JEWISH FAMILY SERVICE ON OCTOBER 16. Please keep in mind that all canned goods must be sealed, non-dented, and cannot be past the expiration date. Please double check each item as this saves JFS volunteers a lot of time in checking the expiration dates. By law, expired food cannot be distributed.

David S. Stone Religious School We have embarked on an exciting school year with our chaverim from Etz Chayim. It is wonderful to have all of our students and staff together again under one roof. Our welcome back breakfast was a tremendous success and we are looking forward to a great school year! We are thrilled to have Rabbi Evan Rubin, Gina Black, Megan Vandyke, and Cindy Becker joining our teaching staff from Etz Chayim. Rabbi Rubin will be teaching on both Sundays and Wednesdays. Our parent/child class will begin on September 18 for ages three and under. The class will be taught by Megan Vandyke and be held from 10:30-12:00. The focus of the curricu-lum will be on Jewish holidays, Hebrew and Judaics. There is no charge for the class. See calendar for details and contact [email protected] if you are interested. We are looking forward to many joint programs throughout the school year. A lone soldier is coming in from the Cleve-land area to speak to 6th-10th graders from Shomer Emunim and students from our David S. Stone Religious School on October 9. Taschlich will also take place prior to the speaker for all congregants from Etz Chayim and Congregation B’nai Israel. Classes will also participate in the high holiday food drive by delivering items to the JFS Food bank as well as organizing items. Peter Silverman is dedicated to keep our twinning program going, and to continue to grow relationships with our students here with our chaverim in the Partnership Region of the Western Galilee. He recently returned from a visit to Israel where he met with the teachers face to face. I was also fortunate to meet with the director of the program here at CBI, so that we can make this an amazing opportunity for our students. Our Hire a Mensch Program was an overwhelming success last year as a fundraiser to help the kids offset their trip to Israel. It is too early to fundraise for the next Israel trip, but we have had continued requests for the program, so we are going to implement it again to help the students fundraise for USY/Kadima. They can earn money to attend conventions and programs throughout the year by YOU hiring a mensch for your needs. A portion of all the proceeds will go directly to Social Action Tikkun Olam (SATO). 2016-2017 Torah Fund Campaign

P’RI YADEHAH, which means “the fruit of her hands,” is a phrase from Eishet Chayil in the Book of Proverbs (31:31).

To commemorate the 100th year of Women’s League for Conservative Judiasm and the 75th year of the Torah fund Campaign, we celebrate women’s achievements through creativity– the fruit of her hands– in the family, workplace, home, synagogue, and community. Women dedicate their lives as volunteers, as leaders in the Jewish and secular worlds, as scholars, scientists, artists, business leaders, and more. The wheat branch featured in the 2017 pin/pendant signifies the sustenance we wish our family and friends, and the olive branch represents our prayers for peace.
