Dear Families,

After a very relaxing and enjoyable summer it is time to transition back to Hebrew School. Our President, Vice Presidents, Board of Trustees and committees spent the months of July and August planning for an-other amazing year. We all met and discussed many exciting events to make this year our best ever!

Please consider attending our Open House. It is a wonderful day to gather, register for Hebrew School, meet with members of our Shul, dip some apples in honey, eat a bagel breakfast and help construct our Sukkah. Later in the afternoon our synagogue is holding an Art Auc-tion Fundraiser. September 20th is full of interesting and community building events. Please spread the word to your friends and plan to join us on that day!

Sincerely,

Jessica Bruschi

Dear B’nai Jeshurun Family,

I hope everyone is having a wonderful and restful summer! As

the High Holiday season is quickly approaching, I wanted to

take this opportunity to fill you all in on news both old and new.

Firstly, I wanted to formally congratulate the members of CBJ

who won the first and second place raffle prizes at the annual

Men’s Club Regional President Dinner. First place won

$1,500.00 in gift cards while the second place winner took

home $750.00 in gift cards. It was certainly wonderful to cele-

brate with individuals from our very own congregation when

their names were pulled!

Secondly, I wanted to remind all of you to be on the lookout for

information on the following upcoming events:

1. We are excited to announce that Men’s Club will be hosting

a Scotch & Steak Dinner in the Sukkah during the week of

Sukkot. We hope many of you will be in attendance! Please

note that details will be available soon.

2. Men’s Club will also be hosting the Sefer Haftorah the

weekend of October 24th. We wish to see our community

take advantage of the opportunity to see this beautiful scroll

as it is a special and rare experience.

3. We look forward to seeing all of you during the High Holi-

days as Men’s Club members will greet and usher all of our

congregants and guests per our annual tradition.

Lastly, I would like to wish everyone a happy, healthy and

fulfilling New Year. L’shanah Tova to you and yours.

Shalom,

Joel Brimmer

Men’s Club President

IT’S CALENDAR TIME

Once again, the Calendar Committee will be working

on the CBJ Calendar this summer.

A mailing was just sent out that included an entry form

and an ad blank. Please gather your information and

make any necessary changes or additions that you want

to be included in the calendar—especially photographs

of those memorable moments with family and

congregation members. Although photographs can be

emailed to Joyce Lieb @[email protected], if there

are more than a few it is preferable to copy photos onto

a CD/DVD or flash drive and either mail it or leave it

in an envelope addressed to Joyce Lieb at the CBJ of-

fice. Flash drives and CDs will be returned.

Also, please take along an advertising form to the busi-

nesses that you frequent. Ask them to support us by

taking out an ad. We need everyone to help us make

this the most successful calendar yet.

If you have any questions, you can always call Joyce

Lieb at 917-902-7520 or send her an email @ mama-

[email protected].

In advance, we thank everyone for all your help.

USY SUMMER I spent this past summer on a USY summer program called USY on Wheels.

USY on Wheels is not just your average teen tour; it’s n immersive Jewish

experience filled with many social actions/community service stops along the

way. Along with 47 other USYers and staff members I traveled the country

on a bus, starting in New Jersey, going across the Northern U.S., then south

along the west coast, through the southern part of our country, and then trav-

eled back north to New Jersey along the east coast. Along the way, I formed

some really close friendships and saw some truly amazing sights.

While making close connections with each other, USYers also made

closer connections with Judaism. Those connections were made even more

meaningful as we can now associate Judaism, and praying in such a positive

light, regardless of where we are at any given time. Can you imagine a

Shacharit service, after watching the sunrise at the Grand Canyon? Now add

the immense ruach (spirit) of these services with a busload of friends and staff

members that became family. This can only happen in USY, and will be

lasting memories that we will never forget. We davened every single day and

became much more familiar with the prayer services. On many occasions we

had to say Shehecheyanu for those who had their first aliyah, their first Torah

reading, their first time leading Birkat Hamazon or a service, and many

other milestones in becoming Jewish leaders.

As we visited communities throughout the country, there were

many opportunities for us to work on various social actions projects.

The list of our efforts is extensive, but there were two that stood apart for me

personally. The first was an organization named, “Cup of Cool Water” in

Spokane, Washington, a place for homeless teenagers to relax, and pick up

Page 17: Congregation B’nai Jeshurun of Staten Island B’nai Jeshurun of Staten Island Bulletin award winner of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism September 2015 5775 Directory

some food and clothing. There we helped clean the facilities and sort through

clothing and toiletries that were donated. It truly put things in perspective for

us, as those who were affected were our peers. We also stopped at “The Jew-

ish Home” in San Francisco, California, a nursing home, where we provided

entertainment and company for a few hours. There were quite a few

performers on our bus, so the entertainment part was fun. However, the best

part was the smiles on the faces of the residents. This past summer was not

only very meaningful, but helped me become close friends with USYers from

New York, New Jersey, and around the country. At the beginning of the trip

everyone stood around awkwardly speaking to older friends, or by themselves.

Every night, we roomed with a different set of people, and made new friends

as we traveled on the bus. We bonded over deep reflection programming led

USYers and staff, and shared our common interests. By the last day we all

became one big family, and could not stand to see each other leave and return

to all ends of the US and Canada.

USY on Wheels was filled with such amazing experiences, and I can’t wait to

continue my involvement in USY on the chapter, regional, and international

levels. There are many great USY events in store for the future; I can only

hope that my fellow Staten Islanders join me in experiencing all that USY has

to offer.

We hope all our fellow congregants have enjoyed a relaxing and

enjoyable summer. Our beautiful and busy High Holiday days are

rapidly approaching. As we pray together during this solemn Holiday

season, let us be thankful for our family and friends. Let us also be

thankful that we have our loyal B’nai Jeshurun Synagogue to attend

where we can experience our inspiring High Holy Days services

together. We hope your family will be blessed with good health, happi-

ness and contentment in the coming year.

Too often, we fall into the thinking that we “do Jewish” for our

families. We cook and clean and decorate for the holidays and Shab-

bat in order to bring traditions into our doing these rituals for others

that we forget to notice what they do for us.

Sunday October 18th—Sisterhood Meeting & Breakfast

Program: Our trip to Poland presented by Arlene Rachman, Vickie

Gimbelman and Arleen Klapper. Join us as we share our journey to

Poland in May 2015. Share our excitement as we searched for our

family roots and located the towns where our ancestors lived. Share

our heartbreak as we toured Auschwitz and witnessed first hand how

so many of our people lived and died in the camps during WW 2.

The Iris Sweig Memorial Garden has been spruced up throughout the

summer. Weeding, pruning plants and spreading red cedar mulch has

been accomplished. Thanks to everyone who helped. A lovely new

miniature Japanese Maple tree was recently planted in the small

round pocket garden. We invite you to visit the garden, sit on a bench

for a while and bask in the warmth, calmness and beauty of this

special part of our Synagogue grounds.

Looking Forward to seeing everyone in Shul
