There is none like you, God of infinite patience.

You promise to listen to us, always.

You speak more words of hope and grace

and offer more acts of mercy and hope

then we can count. Be with us in this time of worship. Amen

Centering Music - “Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silent” - GTG #347

Chancel Choir

Call to Worship Leader: We wait patiently for our God. People: We will sing, we will sing new songs of the One who calls us here. Leader: We will not chase after other gods. People: We will sing, we will sing new songs of the One in whom we can trust. Leader: We will tell of all God has done for us. People: We will sing, we will sing new songs of the One whose salvation is for all.

*Hymn: “O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing” GTG #610 (verses 1-4)

*Prayer of Confession

Leader: Can you imagine a God who would rather forgive us than

punish us, who calls us 'my delight,' rather than chiding us

for being so foolish and wayward? This is why Jesus came,

so we might know of God's tender mercy toward us. Let us

confess our lives to the One who fills us with hope, as we

pray together, saying,

ALL: We try to stop Jesus from coming into our lives, Patient

God, for we know how disruptive he can be. He wants us

to preach the gospel with our lives, but we prefer to

complain how hard that is to do. He wants us to do what

is right, yet wrong-doing comes so easily for us. He

would like us not to give up until justice is done, but we

just don't seem to have the time.

We confess because we know we need to be forgiven by

you, Glory and Grace. Bathe us in the life giving waters

of your mercy so we can come up from the water, ready to

do good for others, to give you all the praise, to learn

justice, grace, and hope from your Servant, Jesus Christ.

*Words of Assurance

Leader: Sisters and brothers in Christ: Do not be anxious, do not

be timid. Trust and welcome the unconditional

forgiveness of God into your mind, and heart and soul.

We are a forgiven people with a future that makes even

the angels in heaven marvel and rejoice.

People: Thanks be to God.

*Congregational Response - “Lamb of God” Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, Have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, Have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, Grant us your peace. Grant us your peace.

*Sharing of the Peace of Christ Leader: May Jesus, the Lamb of God, take away the sin of the world People: and grant us peace. Leader: Let us share that peace with one another

PROCLAIM GOD’S WORD

Children’s Sermon (Children Pre-K through 5th Grade may leave for Sunday School.)

Old Testament Lesson: Isaiah 49:1-7 (p. 665)

Psalm 40:1-11 (responsive) Leader: I waited and waited for some action; at last God bent down and heard me. People: I was pulled out of the pit of despair, lifted above the mud and slush. My feet were set on solid rock and I could walk with certainty.

(continued on next page)

Leader: God has placed a new song in my mouth, put a new

melody on my tongue.

People: Many will be surprised by this and put their own lives

in God’s hands.

Leader: If you want to know true wealth, then it’s time to trust

God,

People: who does not favor the arrogant or those who chase

after vanities.

Leader: You have heaped grace upon grace, God, our very own

God.

People: The joys you plan and do for us cannot be matched

anywhere. If I tried to list and name them

all, they would blow the mind.

Leader: You do not look for sacrifices or offerings, but ears open

like windows to the truth.

People: Grand gestures and gifts are not required, it is enough

that I come to you, God. It’s as if the Scriptures were

written for me: “From the heart’s depths, I delight in

your will.”

Leader: I have published the gospel of liberation in the presence

of the great congregation.

People: You can see that I cannot keep quiet, you are well

aware of that, God.

Leader: I have not kept it all to myself, but spoken out for your

healing truth.

People: Your unfettered love is not kept under wraps, in the

congregation your true-love is known.

Leader: For you, God, have never held back, your mercy is

always there for me.

People: Your unfettered love and faithfulness will look after

me forever!

Translation by Rev. Bruce Prewer

*Hymn - “You, Lord, Are Both Lamb and Shepherd” GTG #274

Gospel Lesson: John:1:29-42 (p. 966)

Sermon: “Not a Child’s Game”

The Rev. Dr. Katherine G. Killebrew

WE RESPOND TO GOD’S WORD

*Affirmation of Faith: PCUSA Brief Statement of Faith

All: We trust in Jesus Christ, fully human, fully God. Jesus

proclaimed the reign of God: preaching good news to

the poor and release to the captives, teaching by word

and deed and blessing the children, healing the sick

and binding up the brokenhearted, eating with outcasts,

forgiving sinners, and calling all to repent and believe

the gospel.

Unjustly condemned for blasphemy and sedition, Jesus was

crucified, suffering the depths of human pain and giving his

life for the sins of the world. God raised this Jesus from the

dead, vindicating his sinless life, breaking the power of sin

and evil, delivering us from death to life eternal.

Offering

Musical Meditation

* Doxology - GTG #606

“Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;

Praise Him, all creatures here below;

Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.”

*Prayer of Dedication

Prayers of the People Leader: The Lord be with you People: And also with you. Leader: Let us pray. Prayers of Praise, Thanksgiving, and Intercession... All: Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

What is that Per Capita Envelope in my box of envelopes?

Many years ago, the Presbyterian Church wanted to be sure that anyone could come to the meetings of the General Assembly (national church), Synod, and Presbytery. They didn’t want to have an elitist church where only the wealthy landowners would meet to make decisions about the government of the church. So they established a small per member fee that each church would pay to the governing bodies so those meetings could pay for those gatherings. That was the beginning of per capita. Now per capita pays for legal costs, administrative costs of the national and regional offices, and still the meeting costs of those bodies. Because of per capita, our Presbyterian Church Mission pledge goes for mission work and not for administrative overhead, like many other organizations. Some people call it a tax, which it isn’t. Nor is it a “franchise fee.” It is our church’s commitment to make representation equal and administration costs low for mission ventures. We ask that each adult member and confirmand (not per family…per member) pay $40.00 in addition to your pledge. If you don’t, then our church has to dip into the money pledged for our work here at CPC. Won’t you please consider making this donation? Thanks! Your Stewardship and Finance Committee
