COLLINGSWOOD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY

August 18, 2019 10th Sunday after Pentecost

ASSEMBLE IN GOD’S NAME

Morning Reflection

Did I offer peace today? Did I bring a smile to someone's face? Did I say words of healing? Did I let go of my anger and

resentment? Did I forgive? Did I love? These are the real questions. I must trust that the little bit of love that

I sow now will bear many fruits, here in this world and the life to come.

Fr. Henri Nouwen

Call to Worship Leader: God calls us to this place, a haven for healing and hope. People: We come, with the pain of our burdens, we come to hear God's Word of hope for us. Leader: Together, we will sing songs of joy; each of us will hear God whisper our name, 'Beloved of my heart.’ People: We join our voices in prayer and praise; we sing of our longing for new lives. Leader: Here, our shadowed corners are filled with Light; here we discover that God dwells in us. People: And not just us, for God would teach all to love; God's Spirit would lead all peoples in peace. Leader: With prayer and praise, in scripture and in song, together let us worship the Living God! *Hymn - “Amazing Grace” GTG #649 tune- Amazing Grace Call to Confession How easy we can learn of God's love - but how hard it is to live it! The world distracts us with its easy choices, while we know how intentional we must be to love one another. Join me as we confess our failures to love and we open our hearts to God, saying, Prayer of Confession (unison) Because you dwell in our hearts, Eternal God, you know how the anger, the pain, the bitterness of our lives try to crowd you out. The noise of the world deafens us to that Word which can heal us. We want our children to be good, kind, and gentle to others, and then they hear us call others names, and speak of them with demeaning words. Our desire for revenge towards those who have hurt us shows that your peace, indeed, is not in us. (continued on next page)

Page 4: Collingswood Presbyterian Church · 2019. 8. 8. · Collingswood Presbyterian Church August 18, 2019 10th Sunday after Pentecost 30 Fern Avenue, Collingswood, New Jersey 08108 Telephone:

Prayer of Confession (continued) You promise a new heaven and a new earth, so create new spirits and new lives within us, Healing God. Shattered by our sin, your heart can still heal our brokenness. Your Spirit, living deep within our souls, can teach us faithful ways. Your Word, Jesus Christ our Lord, whispers to us of your mercy, your hope, your love. *Words of Assurance Leader: The Word which can transform us is not some idle gossip, but good news for us. It fills us with forgiveness, equips us for service, and sends us forth to love others as God loves us. People: In our midst, the Holy Spirit teaches us all we need to know, gives us what we need in order to be faithful and fills us with peace. Thanks be to God. Amen. *Sharing of the Peace Leader: The peace of Christ be with you. People: And also with you.

PROCLAIM GOD’S WORD Children’s Message Anthem Old Testament Reading - Psalm 30 (Read Responsively: Leader, odd numbered verses; People, even numbered verses) 1 I will extol you, O Lord, for you have drawn me up, and did not let my foes rejoice over me. 2 O Lord my God, I cried to you for help, and you have healed me. 3 O Lord, you brought up my soul from Sheol, restored me to life from among those gone down to the Pit. (continued on next page)

Page 5: Collingswood Presbyterian Church · 2019. 8. 8. · Collingswood Presbyterian Church August 18, 2019 10th Sunday after Pentecost 30 Fern Avenue, Collingswood, New Jersey 08108 Telephone:

Old Testament Reading - Psalm 30 (continued) 4 Sing praises to the Lord, O you his faithful ones, and give thanks to his holy name. 5 For his anger is but for a moment; his favor is for a life time. Weeping may linger for the night, but joy comes with the morning. 6 As for me, I said in my prosperity, “I shall never be moved.” 7 By your favor, O Lord, you had established me as a strong mountain; you hid your face; I was dismayed. 8 To you, O Lord, I cried, and to the Lord I made supplication: 9 “What profit is there in my death, if I go down to the Pit? Will the dust praise you? Will it tell of your faithfulness? 10 Hear, O Lord, and be gracious to me! O Lord, be my helper!” 11 You have turned my mourning into dancing; you have taken off my sackcloth and clothed me with joy, 12 so that my soul may praise you and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give thanks to you forever. Gospel Reading - John 5:2-16 (pages 970) Sermon - “The Ungrateful Invalid” Rev. Dr. Bob Higgs Statement of Faith (Adapted from A Church of England Service of Healing) We believe Jesus sets before us the hope of the realm of God. All that is broken will be bound up in God’s healing love. All that is marred by weakness and sin will be transformed by God’s reconcil-ing love. (continued on next page)

Page 6: Collingswood Presbyterian Church · 2019. 8. 8. · Collingswood Presbyterian Church August 18, 2019 10th Sunday after Pentecost 30 Fern Avenue, Collingswood, New Jersey 08108 Telephone:

Statement of Faith (continued) We believe that in his humanity, Jesus took on himself our weakness and bore our sins. The Holy Spirit is present in the struggles and groaning of a world subject to decay, bringing to birth the freedom and glory of God’s new creation. It is in this hope that we bring to God our prayers and our penitence, and look to God for new life. Christ taught his disciples to love one another. In his community of love, in praying together, in sharing all things and in caring for the sick, they recalled his words: ‘In so far as you did this to one of these, you did it to me.’ We believe we are gathered today to witness to this teaching and to pray in the name of Jesus the healer that those who are sick in mind, body, or spirit, be they individuals or institutions, may be restored to health and that all among us may know his saving power.

RESPONSE TO THE WORD

Prayers of the People Leader: We pray to you, O God: People: Hear our Prayer Offering Musical Meditation *Doxology - “Praise God, from Whom All Blessing Flow” GTG #606 Praise God, from whom all blessing flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost Amen.

Prayer of Dedication Leader: We do not only offer our material gifts to you, but we also offer our church community to those who are lonely, our hearts to all who are grieving, our hope to all who have lost their way, and our lives to all who are tossed aside by the world. This we pray, in Jesus’ name, who taught us all to pray, saying:

All: Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
