COLLINGSWOOD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY

July 7, 2019 ASSEMBLE IN GOD’S NAME

Morning Reflection Seven Marks of Vital Congregations:

#1 Lifelong Discipleship Formation

“Discipleship is the process of becoming who Jesus would be if he were you.” ~ Dallas Willard

“Most people in America, when they are exposed to the Christian faith, are not being transformed.

They take one step into the door, and the journey ends. They are not being allowed, encouraged, or

equipped to love or to think like Christ. Yet in many ways a focus on spiritual formation fits what a

new generation is really seeking. Transformation is a process, a journey, not a one-time decision.”

~ David Kinnaman, unChristian: What a New Generation Really Thinks about Christianity… and

Why It Matters

“Discipleship isn’t a program or an event; it’s a way of life. It’s not for a limited time, but for our

whole life. Discipleship isn’t for beginners alone; it’s for all believers for every day of their life. Disci-

pleship isn’t just one of the things the church does; it is what the church does.” ~ Bill Hull, The Com-

plete Book of Discipleship: On Being and Making Followers of Christ

Christianity without the living Christ is inevitably Christianity without discipleship, and Christiani-

ty without discipleship is always Christianity without Christ. ~

Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Responsive Call to Worship - Psalm 100 Leader: Make a joyful shout to the Lord, all you lands! People: Serve the Lord with gladness; Come before His presence with singing. Leader: Know that the Lord, He is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; People: We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.

Leader: Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, And into His courts with praise. People: Be thankful to Him and bless His name. Leader: For the Lord is good; People: His mercy is everlasting, And His truth endures to all generations.

*Hymn - “Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven” GTG #620 tune -Lauda Anima *Prayer of Confession (unison) Merciful God—Father, Son and Holy Spirit: You love us relentlessly; but we love you reluctantly ... or not at all. You call us to love, but we’ve not listened. We walk away from neighbors in need, wrapped in our own concerns. We’ve failed to be an obedient church, violating your will—either by what we do or by what we don’t do. Forgive us, we pray. Enable us to turn to you and receive forgiveness; and free us for joyful obedience, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

* Assurance of Pardon Leader: As Jesus healed the afflicted and restored those who have died, he also forgives our sins and gives us new life. Friends: believe the good news of the gospel. People: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven!

Leader: Alleluia People: Amen!

*Congregational Response - “Gloria Patri”

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,

world without end. Amen, amen. *Sharing of the Peace Leader: The peace of Christ be with you. People: And also with you.

RESPONSE TO THE WORD

*Affirmation of Faith – fr. The Heidelberg Catechism

Q. What is your only comfort in life and in death? A. That I am not my own, but belong—body and soul, in life and in death— to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ. He has fully paid for all my sins with his precious blood and has set me free from the tyranny of the devil. He also watches over me in such a way that not a hair can fall from my head without the will of my Father in heaven; in fact, all things must work together for my salvation. Because I belong to him, Christ, by his Holy Spirit, assures me of eternal life and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for him.

The Great Thanksgiving: Leader: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you. Leader: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them up to the Lord. Leader: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give our thanks and praise. Leader: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. You formed us in your image and breathed into us the breath of life. When we turned away, and our love failed, your love remained steadfast. You delivered us from captivity, made covenant to be our sovereign God, and spoke to us through the prophets. And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven we praise your name and join their unending hymn: All; Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
