COLLINGSWOOD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY

July 15, 2018 8th Sunday after Pentecost

ASSEMBLE IN GOD’S NAME

Morning Reflection You call to us from the stillness of night and the busyness

of our days. Amid the complexities of our lives, we have forgotten to set aside times

to be still before you. O God, will you meet us as we are? Amen.

Prelude - Hymn Sing We will sing the first and last verse of the chosen hymn. Welcome and Announcements

We welcome you in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ! Please sign the guest book in the narthex so we can send you a welcome packet or fill out a yellow welcome card located in the pews. The card can be placed in the offering place.

Gathering of Prayer Concerns and Joys

Please raise your hand to share your joys or concerns to be included in the prayers of the people this day. You may also write your concern on the pink sheets and hand to the Pastor. Please mail a prayer card from the narthex to your loved one.

(Please stand for items marked with an asterisk. GTG is the purple “Glory to God” hymnal. STF is the “Sing the Faith” smaller blue hymnal)

Call to Worship Leader: The foolish say, “there is no God”. People: We come, trusting in Jesus, the face, the voice, the presence of the God who loves us. Leader: The scoffers of our age ask, 'why do you seek after God?' People: We come, in this time, because God's grace has spilled over in our lives. Leader: The hopeless around us think, “no one cares about me.” People: We come, in this time, to this place, because Jesus has found us and brought us home.

*Hymn - “Let Us with a Gladsome Mind” GTG #31 tune - Monkland Prayer of Confession (unison)

O God, who made us for yourself that we may not have to be lonely, we confess that we often prefer to go our own way full of a false bravado and a proud self-regard. We find it difficult to admit our failures. We find it hard to ask forgiveness when we have hurt others. Forgive us for trying to go it alone. Lift us up when we stumble. Keep before us the example of Jesus, who, when he walked among his people, made friends of outcasts and those his society rejected. We pray in his name. Amen

Time for silent confession and reflection.

*Words of Assurance Leader: Jesus, Lamb of God, have mercy on us People: Jesus, bearer of our sins, me mercy on us. Leader: Jesus, redeemer of the world, grant us peace. Leader I declare to you, in the name of Jesus the Christ, you are forgiven.

*Congregational Response - “Lead Me, Guide Me” GTG #740 I am weak and I need your strength and power to help me over my weakest hour. Help me through the darkness your face to see. Lead me, O Lord, lead me. Refrain Lead me, guide me, along the way, for if you lead me, I cannot stray. Lord, let me walk each day with thee. Lead me, O Lord, lead me. *Sharing of the Peace Leader: The peace of Christ be with you. People: And also with you.

PROCLAIM GOD’S WORD Children’s Sermon

Old Testament Reading - 2 Samuel 1:17-27 (pages 272-273) *Hymn - “Jesus, the Very Thought of Thee” GTG #629 tune - St. Agnes New Testament Reading - Mark 5:21-43 (page 915) Responsive Reading - Psalm 130:5-7 Leader: I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I hope; People: my soul waits for the Lord more than those who watch for the morning, more than those who watch for the morning. Leader: O Israel, hope in the Lord! For with the Lord there is steadfast love, and with him is great power to redeem.

Sermon - “We are His Friends” Rev. David Cassie

RESPONSE TO THE WORD

*Affirmation of Faith - A Brief Statement of Faith (unison) In life and in death we belong to God. Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, we trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of Israel, whom alone we worship and serve. We trust in Jesus Christ, fully human, fully God. Jesus proclaimed the reign of God: preaching good news to the poor and release to the captives, teaching by word and deed and blessing the children, healing the sick and binding up the brokenhearted, eating with outcasts, forgiving sinners, and calling all to repent and believe the gospel. Unjustly condemned for blasphemy and sedition, Jesus was crucified, suffering the depths of human pain and giving his life for the sins of the world. God raised this Jesus from the dead, vindicating his sinless life, breaking the power of sin and evil, delivering us from death to life eternal.

you nor forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5)

Musical Meditation - Arioso by J.S. Bach Sami Fulton, handbell solo *Doxology - “Now Thank We All Our God” GTG #643 Now thank we all our God with heart and hands and voices, who wondrous things hath done, in whom this world rejoices; who, from our mothers’ arms, hath bless us on our way with countless gifts of love, and still is ours today. Prayer of Dedication Prayers of the People Leader: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Leader: Prayers of thanksgiving, intercession, petition

All: Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Rev. David Cassie The Rev. David G. Cassie is the former Executive Presbyter of the Presbytery of West Jersey (PCUSA). He and his wife, Dhyan, an Audiologist, were missionaries in Honduras and Mexico. In México they were involved in Church Planting with the Presbyterian Border Ministry. They also served in Honduras with the Christian Commission for Development (CCD: La Comisión Cristiana de Desarrollo), where Dave taught rural and urban pastors in CCD’s theological extension program, while Dhyan worked in CCD’s Health Division, training rural health workers in the prevention of hearing disorders. Dave has had a long relationship with the Presbyterian and Reformed Church of Cuba and was part of a Presbyterian Board of Pensions team that went there to do research to identify Presbyterians whose Pensions had been embargoed by the US Government. He is now helping the Cuban Presbyterian Church preserve its historical documents. Dave was part of the first West Jersey Presbytery team sent to Cuba to install two water purification systems. He serves on the Steering Committee of the Presbyterian Cuba Partners Network which will hold their annual meeting this October in Florida. Dave is committed to the transformation of persons and congregations through local and international mission outreach.
