ASSEMBLE IN GOD’S NAME

Silent Prayer

When our lives crumble, you urge us to buy hope's fields.

When we are tempted by wealth,

you point us to those who have nothing but share everything.

When we have lost our way and can no longer endure the emptiness of our lives,

you satisfy us from the abundance of God's grace and joy.

Sheltering Spirit, we seek your peace. Amen

Call to Worship Leader: The word has come for us from God: People: who promises to shelter us under the wings of hope and grace. Leader: The word has come to us from Jesus: People: who encourages us to remember the good news we have received. Leader: The word flows to us from the Spirit: People: who reminds us to place our hope and trust in God all to Worship. *Hymn - “Gather Us In” STF #2236 *Prayer of Confession (unison) Leader: In God's presence, our lives are exposed, our words are shown for their hollowness, our need is revealed. Let us confess who we are, as we ask God to embrace us with grace and hope. All: We need to confess, God of Abraham and Lazarus, how often we are not content with the simple gifts and lives you offer. Tempted by everything, we can become insensitive to those who have nothing. Encouraged by the world to accumulate more, we may miss the chance to gather your goodness and godliness. Chasing after all which has no value, we may not have the energy to pursue the faith, the love, the gentleness you have for us.

Forgive us, God of Reversals. You have sent the One who speaks the words we need to listen to in order to have life. Help us to remember how you have redeemed us, and in remembering, may we make that good confession that Jesus Christ is our Lord and Savior, now and forever.

Silent prayers may be offered

Page 5: Collingswood Presbyterian ChurchNov 09, 2012  · COLLINGSWOOD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY September 29, 2013 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time ASSEMBLE IN GOD’S

*Words of Assurance Leader: This is the good news that comes from God: I will hear

your prayers, I will answer with hope and peace, I will deliver you from your sins.

People: God has covered us with grace; under God's hope we will find shelter. Thanks be to God.

Response - Kyrie STF #2275 Kyrie, Kyrie, eleison (Lord have mercy) Kyrie, Kyrie, eleison Christe, Christe, eleison (Christ have mercy) Christe, Christe, eleison Kyrie, Kyrie, eleison Kyrie, Kyrie, eleison

*Sharing of the Peace Leader: The peace of Christ be with you. People: And also with you.

Reaffirmation of the Baptismal Covenant

Presentation of the Candidates for Membership

Profession of Faith

*Affirmation of Faith – The Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,

And in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayer

Welcome to Jennifer Giordano and Ryan Berkelbach

PROCLAIM GOD’S WORD

Children’s Choir - “Bind Us Together” - Director Lorraine Brown Bind us together Lord Bind us together With cords that cannot be broken

Bind us together Lord Bind us together Bind us together with love

There is only one Lord There is only one King There is only one body That is why we sing…

Old Testament Lesson: Amos 6:1-7 (p.839)

Anthem - “Amazing Grace” -traditional Lorrain Brown - vocals, Fred Heuser - guitar, Paul Young - piano

Psalm 146 (responsive)

Leader: Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord, O my soul! People: I will praise the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God all my life long. Leader: Do not put your trust in princes, in mortals, in whom there is no help. When their breath departs, they return to the earth; on that very day their plans perish. People: Happy are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord their God, who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them; who keeps faith for ever; who executes justice for the oppressed; who gives food to the hungry. Leader: The Lord sets the prisoners free; the Lord opens the eyes of the blind.

Page 7: Collingswood Presbyterian ChurchNov 09, 2012  · COLLINGSWOOD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY September 29, 2013 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time ASSEMBLE IN GOD’S

People: The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down; the Lord loves the righteous. Leader: The Lord watches over the strangers; he upholds the orphan and the widow, but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin. People: The Lord will reign for ever, your God, O Zion, for all generations. Praise the Lord!

*Hymn - “Would I Have Answered When You Called?” STF #2137

Scripture Reading

Sermon - Rev. Bruce Main, Director Urban Promise Ministry, Camden, NJ

RESPONSE TO THE WORD

*Affirmation of Faith - The Confession of 1967 PCUSA

Leader: God’s redeeming work in Jesus Christ embraces the whole of human life: social and cultural, economic and political, scientific and technological, individual and corporate. It includes the natural environment as exploited and despoiled by sin. It is the will of God that the divine purpose for human life shall be fulfilled under the rule of Christ and all evil be banished from creation. People: With an urgency born of this hope, the church applies itself to present tasks and strives for a better world. It does not identify limited progress with the kingdom of God on earth, nor does it despair in the face of disappointment and defeat. In steadfast hope, the church looks beyond all partial achievement to the final triumph of God. ALL: Now to him who by the power within us is able to do far more abundantly than all we ask or think, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and

invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see

you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ “The King will reply,

‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these broth-

ers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ Matthew 25:37-40

Session Highlights

We were challenged by the opening devotion calling us to

look at our building and procedures that welcome guests to our church. Are we greeting all visitors? Is there sufficient signage or directions for visitors? Are we being friendly out side of church to others?

There has been a dip in giving for the summer months - bring

your pledges up to date!

They lounge renovation are progressing well. The kitchen cabinets and dishwasher have been installed.

The classrooms on the second floor of Calvin hall are being

renovated.

Ryan Berkelbach has been accepted into membership.

We hired a nursery attendant for the year named Madeline Almand. We are excited about the new babies coming to CPC.

New members will be installed on September 29.

We voted to invite Rev. Bruce Main from Urban Promise to preach at our church on Sunday September 29.

We are happy to welcome Samantha Piccolo from the

Presbyterian Historical Society on Sunday 9/29. There will be a field trip for CPC members to the Society and to the Pine Street Church and cemetery on Thursday, 10/10.

Help us to reach our Child Sponsorship goal!

Throughout the year, UrbanPromise will be working to raise an additional 200 Child Sponsorships that will enable us to open two new AfterSchool Programs and Summer Camps in which to love, educate, and spiritually nourish 120 Camden youth. Child Sponsors have been the backbone of UrbanPromise since our first Summer Camp in 1988. Just $30/month provides a Camden child with a year of engaging and educational programming within a neighborhood-based camp. Each year, these sponsorships allow more than 400 children to participate in activities that improve their academic performance, teach necessary life skills, establish positive relationships with caring adults, explore the arts, and nurture their faith.

Please consider helping us offer these opportunities and more to an

additional 120 youth over the upcoming year!
