Sunday Readings The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

August 08

R 1 - Rv 11:19a; 12:1-6a, 10ab God’s temple in heaven was opened, and the ark of his covenant could be seen in the temple. A great sign appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. She was with child and wailed aloud in pain as she labored to give birth. Then another sign appeared in the sky; it was a huge red dragon, with seven heads and ten horns, and on its heads were seven diadems. Its tail swept away a third of the stars in the sky and hurled them down to the earth. Then the dragon stood before the woman about to give birth, to devour her child when she gave birth. She gave birth to a son, a male child, destined to rule all the nations with an iron rod. Her child was caught up to God and his throne. The woman herself fled into the desert where she had a place prepared by God. Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: “Now have salvation and power come, and the Kingdom of our God and the authority of his Anointed One.” R 5 , 7 , 9 : PS45: The queen stands at your right hand, arrayed in gold.

R 11 : PS45: The queen stands at your right hand, arrayed in gold. R 2 - 1 Cor 15:20-27 Brothers and sisters: Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through man, the resurrection of the dead came also through man. For just as in Adam all die, so too in Christ shall all be brought to life, but each one in proper order: Christ the firstfruits; then, at his coming, those who belong to Christ; then comes the end, when he hands over the Kingdom to his God and Father, when he has destroyed every sovereignty and every authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death, for “he subjected everything under his feet.” G - Lk 1:39-56 Mary set out and traveled to the hill country in haste to a town of Judah, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For at the moment the sound of your

greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.” And Mary said: “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my Savior for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed: the Almighty has done great things for me and holy is his Name. He has mercy on those who fear him in every generation. He has shown the strength of his arm, and has scattered the proud in their conceit. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. He has come to the help of his servant Israel for he has remembered his promise of mercy, the promise he made to our fathers, to Abraham and his children forever.” Mary remained with her about three months and then returned to her home. P F I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the Only begotten Son of God, born of the Father, before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered, died, and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the Prophets. I believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

St. Vincent De Paul Society:

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary: In today’s Gospel, even the child in Elizabeth’s womb leaps with joy at the approach of Mary, the “lowly servant,” who by accepting God’s plan for her became blessed for all generations. With love for your neighbors who have nothing, look around your house to see what furniture, household items, and clothing you no longer use…and give it to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.

Names in Bold type are new this week.

Dear Parishioners, That time of the year has arrived – students returning to school! Some of us may have the reaction of wanting to cheer (those would probably be coming from parents!), while others of our community (probably those who are younger!) may want to groan. In either case, this is a hopeful time of the year with new beginnings and new opportunities. This weekend we offer our prayers of blessing upon all students, parents, teachers, and staff – may the Lord keep you and guide you, may He let his face shine upon you, and give you His peace! Last week, I wrote some dates into my calendar that I wanted to remember for 2022 – the Cardinals released their schedule, including their season opener and home opener. That reminded me – there are some dates we as a parish community need to remember for 2022 as well. The Covid-19 pandemic put a hold on our ability to gather for retreats, but now the Mercy Center has protocols in place to keep people safe and able to utilize the retreat center. We have a men’s retreat scheduled for March 31st – April 3rd, and we have a women’s retreat scheduled for July 28th – July 31st. I would hope all of us put those dates on our calendars. If you have never gone on an ACTS retreat, please consider attending the retreat in 2022; this would be a great way to renew your faith and deepen your relationship with our loving God. Maybe you could consider becoming a team member for these upcoming retreats, a great way to re-connect with your fellow parishioners and build up the Body of Christ here at St. Simon parish. Let us all keep those dates marked on our calendars and in our hearts, to pray for those who will attend the retreat, to pray for those who will support them as team members, to pray for the renewal of the Holy Spirit present in our parish through these ACTS retreats. Oh, and by the way, don’t worry about missing any Cardinal home games with these ACTS retreats – they will be in Pittsburgh and Washington DC during our next ACTS retreats! :) Have a safe, healthy, and holy week! St. Simon the Apostle pray for us! Sincerely,

you are not Catholic. Classes will begin in early October. Please contact Deacon Dave at 314-842-3848 (ext. 120) to register or for more information. There is no cost for this program.

Make a Consecration to St. Joseph In the midst of crisis, confusion, and fear, it's time to come home again to the patron saint of the Universal Church: St. Joseph. That's why the Vatican declared this year to be the "Year of St. Joseph." In honor of St. Joseph, and for his intercession in our lives, St. Simon will offer this 6 session program. We will start the week of September 27 and conclude the week of November 1 (All Saints Day).

There is a short daily reading (1-2 pages) and one meeting per week. (Optional supplemental reading is offered in the book.) Fr. Don Calloway leads us in this consecration. He shows us how we can entrust ourselves, our Church, and our world to St. Joseph's loving care—and then watch for wonders when he opens the floodgates of Heaven to pour out graces into our lives today! Please contact Deacon Dave at 314-842-3848 (ext.120) or Steve Brokaw at 314-323-7131 by September 7 to register. We will order books based on registration. Cost is $20 per book. We will plan to offer a daytime and evening session based on interest. You may also opt for independent study.

Holy Name News:

“The Rosary is the storehouse of countless blessings” St. Pope John

Paul II

The Rosary Project We now have over 60 families/individuals committed to saying one decade of the rosary daily for the intentions and growth of our parish and school. This group includes school families, long time parishioners, faculty members, and clergy. God is good!! Would you join us in this mission? It will only take about 5 minutes a day, but what God can do with that 5 minutes is immeasurable. The more families committed the more Rosaries being prayed. I believe God has great graces ready for St. Simon parish and school, so let us come together in one voice through the Blessed Mother and ask for them. Join in praying for our priests and deacons, our faculty, staff, students, parents, and for all our community’s intentions. Join us in asking that God will use our Parish and School to build His Kingdom and let us share His love with our neighbors. It is a small commitment, but with small offerings God does amazing things. Please be a part of this powerful prayer. “if two of you agree on earth about anything for which they are to pray, it shall be granted to them by my heavenly Father.” Mt 18: 19 To sign up and for more information: Marla Wokurka / 314 607- 2577/ [email protected]
