St. Simon the Apostle Ascension of the Lord May 24, 2020

ENTRANCE 5PM, 7AM, 9AM: HAIL THE DAY THAT SEES HIM RISE LLANFAIR/Robert Williams/Charles Wesley/Thomas Cotterill

1. Hail the day that sees him rise Alleluia! To his throne beyond the skies; Alleluia! Christ, the Lamb for sinners giv’n, Alleluia! Enters now the highest heav’n! Alleluia!

2. There for him high triumph waits: Alleluia! Lift your heads, eternal gates; Alleluia! He has conquered death and sin; Alleluia! Take the King of glory in. Alleluia!

3. Highest heav’n its Lord receives; Alleluia! Yet he loves the earth he leaves; Alleluia! Though returning to his throne, Alleluia! Still he calls the world his own. Alleluia!

Text: 77 77 with alleluias; Charles Wesley, 1707–1788, alt. Music: Robert Williams, 1781–1821. PREPARATION OF THE GIFTS: instrumental

COMMUNION 5PM, 7AM, 9AM: Be Not Afraid Bob Dufford SJ 1. You shall cross the barren desert, but you shall not die of thirst. You shall wander far in safety though you do not know the way. You shall speak your words in foreign lands and all will understand. You shall see the face of God and live.

Refrain Be not afraid. I go before you always. Come, follow me, and I will give you rest.

2. If you pass through raging waters in the sea, you shall not drown. If you walk amid the burning flames, you shall not be harmed. If you stand before the pow’r of hell and death is at your side, know that I am with you through it all.

3. Blessed are your poor, for the kingdom shall be theirs. Blest are you that weep and mourn, for one day you shall laugh. And if wicked tongues insult and hate you all because of me, blessed, blessed are you!

Text: Based on Isaiah 43:2–3; Luke 6:20ff. Text and music © 1975, 1978, Robert J. Dufford, SJ, and OCP. All rights reserve

ONE LOVE RELEASED Bob Frenzel/Kevin Keil Refrain One bread, one body, one cup, one call, one faith, one Spirit present in us all. One prayer, one blessing, one hope, one peace, one church, one people, one love released.

1. Is not this bread we share, the body of our Lord? Is not this wine we drink, the blood of Christ outpoured?

2. I am the bread of life, eat and you shall live. To those who share this meal, my strength I’ll always give.

3. I am the living bread, as manna from the sky. This bread I give to you, that you may never die.

4. No one will come to me, unless our God has led. And I shall raise them up, raise them from the dead! Text: Bob Frenzel and Kevin Keil (ASCAP). Music: Based on O WALY WALY. Text and music © 1999, 2000, Robert H. Frenzel and Kevin Keil. Published by OCP. All rights reserved.

RECESSIONAL 5PM, 7AM, 9AM America the Beautiful MATERNAx 1. O beautiful for spacious skies, For amber waves of grain, For purple mountain majesties Above the fruited plain! America! America! God shed his grace on thee, And crown thy good with brotherhood From sea to shining sea.

2. O beautiful for pilgrim feet, Whose stern, impassioned stress A thoroughfare for freedom beat Across the wilderness! America! America! God mend thine every flaw, Confirm thy soul in self-control, Thy liberty in law.

3. O beautiful for heroes proved In liberating strife, Who more than self their country loved, And mercy more than life! America! America! May God thy gold refine, Till all success be nobleness, And every gain divine. Text: CMD; Katherine L. Bates, 1859–1929. Music: Samuel A. Ward, 1848–1903.

1. Shout with joy to the Lord, all the earth! Praise the name above all names! Say to God, “How wondrous your works, how glorious your name!”

2. Let the earth worship, singing your praise. Praise the glory of your name! Come and see the deeds of the Lord; bless God’s holy name!

3. God’s right hand made a path through the night, split the waters of the sea. All creation, lift up your voice: “Our God set us free!”

4. Listen now, all you servants of God, as I tell of these great works. Blessed be the Lord of my life, whose love shall endure!

1. Bless the LORD, O my soul! O LORD, my God, you are great indeed! How manifold are your works, O LORD! The earth is full of your creatures.

2. If you take away their breath, they perish and return to their dust. When you send forth your spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the earth.

3. May the glory of the LORD endure forever; may the LORD be glad in his works! Pleasing to him be my theme; I will be glad in the LORD. Text: Psalm 104:1, 24, 29–30, 31, 34. Communion: 11am Christ, Be Our Light Bernadette Farrell 1. Longing for light, we wait in darkness. Longing for truth, we turn to you. Make us your own, your holy people, light for the world to see.

Refrain Christ, be our light! Shine in our hearts. Shine through the darkness. Christ, be our light! Shine in your church gathered today.

2. Longing for peace, our world is troubled. Longing for hope, many despair. Your word alone has pow’r to save us. Make us your living voice. 3. Longing for food, many are hungry. Longing for water, many still thirst. Make us your bread, broken for others, shared until all are fed. 4. Longing for shelter, many are homeless. Longing for warmth, many are cold. Make us your building, sheltering others, walls made of living stone. 5. Many the gifts, many the people, many the hearts that yearn to belong. Let us be servants to one another, making your kingdom come. Text: Bernadette Farrell; Spanish tr., Pedro Rubalcava and Jaime Cortez. Text and music © 1993, 2011, Bernadette Farrell. ATTENTION These precautionary measures, to mitigate the spread of Covid-19 are now in place:

Those who are symptomatic or who have been exposed to another with the virus within 14 days are not permitted to enter church. All are asked to check their temperature at home before coming to church, and to remain at home if you have any symptoms or feel sick.

Those who are at risk because of an underlying health issue or who are over the age of 60 are strongly encouraged to avoid the risk of attending public celebrations of the Mass.

The faithful are obliged to wear a mask entering the church lobby and during the celebration of Mass.

Families are to maintain six-foot distancing between their family and others families or individuals throughout Mass; one pew is to be left vacant in between congregants.

Distribution of Holy Communion from the chalice is prohibited to the assembly; communicants are to receive the Body of Christ in the hand.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY IN RESPONSE TO ST. SIMON OUTREACH OPPORTUNITIES

Many thanks to those who have dropped off food items for lunch bags for Hancock School. The backpack buddies made 135 lunch bags for needy children this week. In June they will attempt to create at least 200 bags. The generosity of the parish and of the school is making this possible. These children often struggle for meals under normal conditions. Today's environment makes this even more difficult. The backpack buddies also face the challenge

of quantity limitations imposed by the stores. Specific items that are needed for the June lunch bags are:

• Cans of Chef Boyardee Ravioli or spaghetti & meatballs • Mac & cheese cups or packets • Ramen noodle soup or cups of soup (cans are OK but ready-to-serve cups are better) • Any bags of chips • Applesauce • Fruit cups • Pudding

We are also still collecting men’s hygiene products for Peter and Paul homeless shelter in the city. Needs include:

• Disposable razor blades and shave cream • Toothbrushes and toothpaste • Soap • Deodorant

Please note: all four Missouri Bishops have dispensed the faithful from the obligation to attend Mass on Sunday until further notice. The COVID-19 pandemic presents a serious threat to our physical health! If you have any questions about Mass attendance, please feel free to contact Fr. Brad at the parish office.

Financial Support News Our parish continues to need your support – this past week, we discovered a leak in the water main pipe on our campus. This repair was unexpected and will be very costly. Please continue your generous support of St. Simon parish, as we continue to work through these difficult times. Thank you for all that have donated and kept our church running financially during this time!

Fisher House 5/19/2020 St. Simon church stepped it up again, delivering a homemade meal to St. Louis VA Medical Center Fisher House Tuesday night. Things were done a bit differently, but the end result was the same. The families staying there were treated to a meal made with love, so they could focus on their own medical needs. Kudos to Ken & Sara Goeddel for making Hamburgers and for Kevin Geringer for BBQing them, Tim Colona for BBQing Brats, Sharon & Joe Orf for making cheesy potatoes, Maggie Gansner for providing Cole Slaw & HB/Hotdog buns, and Deb & Patrick McLaughlin for baking a Pineapple Upside Down cake. All food was prepared at these volunteer's homes and then delivered to the outside gate of Fisher House.

Prayer for Memorial Day God of power and mercy, you destroy war and put down earthly pride. Banish violence from our midst and wipe away our tears, that we may all deserve to be called your sons and daughters. Keep in your mercy those men and women who have died in the cause of freedom and bring them safely into your kingdom of jus ce and peace. We ask this though Jesus Christ our Lord. R/. Amen
