St. Simon the Apostle Third Sunday of Easter April 15, 2018

April 15-Third Sunday of Easter: In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus explains the meaning of the scriptures. Like the disciples, when we offer and receive forgiveness our hearts burn because we encounter the risen Christ within us. Have you considered answering the call to “help the poor find forgiveness and healing in their life” by joining the Society of St. Vincent de Paul?

Third Sunday of Easter The grand and dramatic story of God comes into focus in today's readings. The passages from Acts and from the Gospel of Luke describe how Jesus' disciples began to understand how Jesus fits into the larger narrative of God, Israel, humanity, and all of creation. In the Gospel, Jesus interprets the scriptures for his followers. He shows how his seemingly shameful death was actually the fulfillment of God's promises. Jesus shows how his life, death, and resurrection are the

surprising turning point of the scripture story. We, the Church today, find ourselves in the middle of this story. We first look back, to recall God's overflowing and steadfast love, beginning from Creation, through Christ, until today. We then look forward to the fulfillment, already launched by Jesus, of the Reign of God. With this perspective, we play our part in the drama, joining God to bring God's work to completion. THE SURPRISE MESSIAH After the crucifixion of Jesus, his disciples were in despair. Not only had they seen their master's horrible death, their own lives were now at risk, for the crucifixion suggested to them that Jesus was not the awaited Messiah after all. The Messiah had been envisioned as somehow coming in power, liberating Israel from foreign domination and signaling God's long-awaited return to dwell again with Israel. The Crucifixion suggested to them the possibility of God's rejection of Jesus, or Jesus' failure to achieve God's purposes. This is partly why the disciples were amazed when Jesus appeared. God had vindicated Jesus by raising him. The Resurrection revealed that God's promises were actually fulfilled, precisely through this death. Through the cross, God had indeed liberated the people from sin and death. God had truly returned, in Jesus and then later in the presence and activity of the Holy Spirit. The dominion of sin and death had been broken. The Resurrection was the first display of the new kingdom of God, in Jesus. NOT FOR HEAVEN ONLY In the Gospel passage, Jesus specifically emphasizes his bodily presence. He invites the disciples to touch him, and he eats some fish in front of them. He makes it clear that he is not a ghost and did not shed his physicality or his humanity when he was raised. The disciples began to understand Jesus in a new way. Christians later articulated this as Jesus' bodily resurrection. The resurrected Jesus, both human and divine, reigns both in heaven and on earth. So when Jesus sent his disciples, and today sends all of us, to proclaim God's kingdom, he never means "for heaven only." God aims to renew, not reject, human bodies, human culture, and the created universe. God's project for us is here and now, within all the limitations and messiness of daily life. We are called to care for each other, for the earth, and for all God's beloved creation. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Parish Stewardship of Treasure :

April 15, 2018 - 3rd Sunday of Easter “Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, ‘Peace be with you.’ But they were startled and frightened…” – LUKE 24:36-37 Throughout the day we have many opportunities to “see the face of Jesus” in others and to “be the face of Jesus” to others. Do we take that opportunity to provide “peace” to those we encounter or are we afraid of what others will think of us and do nothing? Pray for the strength to live a “God-centered” life and not a “self-centered” life.

Dynamic Catholic, Alive! - Fulfillment and Joy The readings today remind us that Christ fulfills all that was written about Him in the Law and the Prophets. The prophets foretold that the Christ would suffer and that He would rise again and be the King of all the nations. When we are evangelizing, we should keep this message in mind: Christianity is credible because the prophecies of the Scriptures are fulfilled. Christian faith is not blind but is totally reasonable. In addition, this fulfillment makes us “incredulous with joy” as we come to understand that Christ calls us to eternal life with Him. “Joy is the infallible sign of the presence of God,” said Pierre Teilhard de Chardin. The next time you are bringing Christ to someone, remember that Christ fulfills and fills us with joy. archstl.org/dynamic

DID YOU KNOW ... St. Simon has had a youth group for many years? When Pope John Paul II came to St. Louis in 1999 he asked the parents to start a YOUTH MINISTRY program within the parishes... to focus on Spirituality, Service and So-cial? A couple of our parents took this to heart after tak-ing 97 teens to the Youth Rally to see Pope John Paul II; as a result the ST. SIMON YOUTH MINISTRY was cre-ated. Did you know in the Youth Ministry Room, street banners hang as a reminder of our beginning? Come take a look.

We are parishioners looking to hire additional caring individuals to help provide incontinence care to our bed bound Mother. Visits tend to be 20-30 min. and times are flexible. She is alert and able to reposition herself with moderate assistance.

Please contact Gina Faust 314-440-9619 [email protected] Thank you!

St. Simon the Apostle Third Sunday of Easter April 15, 2018

St. Simon School News: Welcome back! I hope that everyone had a relaxing and enjoyable Spring Break. School is back in the swing of things for our last two months of the school year. This year has flown by quickly. We had our Easter Prayer Service on Monday. This reminded us to look at the new signs of life around us and to be a sign of life and faith to those we encounter on a daily basis. Three of our Eighth graders are finalists in the Respect Life Essay Contest. Wesley Cornell, Stephanie Williams, and William Wappler have been invited to the awards ceremony on April 18th. We would like to congratulate all of our students who participated in the contest. Lots of exciting things are taking place this month. Our First Graders had their special persons Mass last Thursday. Seventh Grade has their Confirmation retreat on Sunday. Second Grade is making their First Communion next weekend. Screening of Kindergarten has started. Our Fifth Graders will be attending Camp Lakewood at the end of the month. And lastly, our Eighth Graders are getting final preparations ready for the play Seussical, Jr: The Musical. This will be presented the first weekend in May. As you can tell, things are happening all around. Lots of learning and faith-filled activities are planned this month. It will go by fast so enjoy the time before it is gone. Don’t forget to mark your calendars for our speaker on April 25th for parents. Open our Hearts, Lord, to your Service, Mrs. Hiatt
