St. Simon the Apostle Holy Trinity Sunday May 27, 2018

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Thomas Ehrhart, son-in-law of Pat Vogel. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace.

SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST

HOLY TRINITY Praise God! We belong to God's church, which points us to heaven while also embracing our human condition. In today's Gospel, Jesus sends his disciples out to baptize all people in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Baptism washes us clean spiritually, but also refreshes us physically. Think of

the dirtiest you have ever been--drenched in sweat, covered in dirt, or long unbathed for some reason. Then recall how invigorating it felt to wash in running water. This physical experience of refreshing water reminds us of God's power to renew us, body and soul. In baptism we become part of God's family, as Saint Paul says, through "a Spirit of adoption." As beloved children of God, we cry out "Abba!" and confess from the depths of our hearts that, as Deuteronomy says, the LORD is God, and there is no other.

ALL IN THE FAMILY

The fact that we are God's actual children changes everything in human history. Studying ancient mythologies is fascinating, with such a variety of gods, demigods, monsters, and creatures. But nowhere in those stories does any mere mortal proclaim the intimate goodness of God who parents all of humanity with tender, unchanging love. Deuteronomy seizes on this astonishing attentiveness of God, asking, "Did anything so great ever happen before? Was it ever heard of?" The people of God must answer, "No, never!" God, the one and only true God, has transformed all of human history by choosing us as beloved children. And though we have broken every promise ever made, God has remained faithful to our covenant. God shows us how to keep faith with one another in deep, abiding love. Many of us carry wounds from experiences of unfaithfulness and selfishness. As a people, we are not consistently good at loving each other in the way that God loves us. Each one of us knows the savage pain of indifference or betrayal. Many of us have inflicted pain on others. Even so, God loves us. God's faithfulness encourages us to try again, to love more selflessly.

ONGOING SALVATION

God rejoices when we refresh ourselves in God's love and rededicate our lives to holiness. Broken as we are, the Lord wants our help to save the world. Jesus saved the world once and for all, of course, through his cross and resurrection. But the work of God's salvation continues as God provides the grace for each human person to work toward healthy relationships with God and others. This work goes on until the end of time, and the Lord wants our help. This is what it means to be a disciple of Christ in the new evangelization: We must ask for the grace to live in Jesus, refreshing others with his love. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Dear Faithful of St. Louis, Since 1956, SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital has been sustained and uplifted by the generosity of the St. Louis Catholic community. Today, it is the only free-standing Catholic pediatric hospital in the country, touching the lives of more than 200,000 children each year from the St. Louis area, Metro East Illinois, across the country and around the world. Their faith-filled doctors, nurses and caregivers serve all children in need of exceptional care, regardless of their family’s ability to pay. As Chairman of the SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Board of Governors, I am calling on Catholic donors from across the St. Louis area to show your support in the spirit of giving on Glennon Sunday weekend June 2-3, 2018. This special collection offers us the opportunity to answer God’s call to show compassion and mercy for the sick, to demonstrate love and concern for others, and to support the critical, lifesaving work at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon. Last year, our St. Louis Archdiocese collectively raised more than $500,000 for the hospital. Gifts to Glennon Sunday are put to immediate use through the Children’s Fund, which benefits many of the hospital’s programs, services and special needs, including innovations in technology, vital supportive services and charity care. I hope you’ll take a moment to read the story (click the image to the right) about Michael Loness, a child whose parents prayed every day for a kidney donor for their little boy. Those prayers were answered a few months ago in a most unexpected way, thanks to the kindness of a stranger. Miracles like Michael’s happen each and every day at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon, and I hope you’ll consider making a gift at Mass on Glennon Sunday or online at glennon.org On behalf of the many children and families who will benefit from your gift, I express my sincere appreciation for your continued prayers and for your support of Glennon Sunday, “Where Faith and Healing Unite.” Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Robert J. Carlson Archbishop of St. Louis Chairman of the Board of Governors SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation

Parish Stewardship of Treasure :

May 27, 2018 - Feast of the Holy Trinity “The Spirit itself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ…” – ROMANS 8:16-17 If we are heirs to the kingdom of God, shouldn’t we work to build up His kingdom? Shouldn’t we be good stewards of our inheritance, using our time in prayer, our talent in charitable works and our treasure to care for the Church that God has left to us? Our Church is a treasured heirloom from God. Do we treat it that way?

May 27-Most Holy Trinity: As we celebrate the mystery of the Trinity we also realize the mystery of how much God loves and cares for us each day. Believing in this our lives can then overflow in thanksgiving and praise. This month, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul brought the love and care of Jesus to the poor by assisting St. Simon the Apostle families, providing in food for utility, rent and other bills, etc. Thank You!

St. Vincent De Paul Society News :

Dynamic Catholic, Alive! - Holy Trinity Sunday- Make Disciples of all Nations The Gospel for today is one of the most classic passages illuminating our call to be missionary disciples. It is often called the Great Commission and reminds us that we have been sent by God to proclaim the Good News of salvation to all people. The Christian life is a constant cycle of worship and being sent. We worship in the Mass and are sent out to share what and whom we have received in the Holy Eucharist. Then, we return again to this font of life in order to receive nourishment for the next time we are sent. We journey from communion to mission and back again. I invite you today to consider your daily life and what little ways you can make disciples of others. Perhaps it is extra prayer and silence in your life, joining or leading a Bible study, inviting a person to a parish event, or sharing what Jesus Christ has done in your life. There are many ways we can make more disciples for Christ. Be creative! Archstl.org/dynamic

St Simon School News: Calling all Girls: Grades K – 8

Simon’s Sisters is a parish-based organization focused on guiding the young women of our parish in serving God, each other, and our community. Meetings are held once a month. We are planning the upcoming 2018-2019 school year and need YOU! The following individuals will be our leaders next year:

K - Tiffany Kunz 1st - Julie Mastnak & Jessica Schellman 2nd – Still Need 3rd – Liz Urbansky 4th & 5th – Melissa Brannan 6th, 7th, 8th – Still Need

Each grade must have a leader in order to join Simon’s Sisters. There will be a meeting this summer to plan the year. If you are interested in leading a grade or helping in any way, please contact Liz Urbansky at [email protected].

Dear Parishioners, We would like to congratulate the following students who have successfully completed their elementary education at St. Simon the Apostle. The faculty and staff are so proud of these individuals and cannot wait to see what they accomplish during their high school years.

As we wind up the school year, I would like to thank all of you that participate in our events, volunteer to help out, donate to the school, join us for all school Masses, and pray for our students and staff. Every little bit helps and we are very grateful. Have a blessed summer. Mrs. Hiatt, Principal
