St. Simon the Apostle Thirty-second Sunday of Ordinary Time November 12, 2017

Thirty-second Sunday in

Ordinary Time In Jesus' parable of the ten

bridesmaids, only the bridesmaids who brought oil with them had enough to light their lamps. By being prepared, they were welcomed into the wedding feast, while the unprepared ones found the door locked on their return. We may hear Jesus' parable of the bridesmaids who did not take oil for their lamps with them to the wedding, and think, "I would not be so shortsighted. You never know what is going to happen." Yet, are we really prepared to meet our Lord at the moment of our death or in the second coming of Christ? Are we, people who profess faith in Jesus, ready for the bridegroom who is Christ our Lord? Or are we more like the foolish bridesmaids than we want to admit? We know neither the day nor the hour. We must be ready.

DON'T BE FOOLISH

What is foolish? What is wise? Most of us could name an occasion or two in which we have done something foolish. We did not stop to consider the consequences of our actions and regretted them in the end. The sort of foolishness we are considering here, however, is more than simple impulsive behavior and has eternal consequences. To be foolish in the eyes of God is to ignore the ways in which we know we are called to behave--toward God, others, and ourselves. The five foolish bridesmaids did not fail in their duties through their actions, but rather through inaction. Like them, we may fail to be ready to meet our Lord, through inaction as much as through our actions. In these final weeks of the liturgical year, we are urged to take stock. How are we, or are we not, living as people whose faith directs our lives? Are we foolish through sinful action or inaction? Do we care for others and for ourselves, as we know we ought? Or do we act instead as though we have all the time in the world in which to embrace Christ's way of mercy, forgiveness, justice, love, and peace? Do we fail to recognize that Christian discipleship is a way of life?

BE WISE, BE READY

This urging to be ready for Christ's return is not intended to frighten us, but rather to focus our attention on the things that matter. Wisdom lies in seeking God in all things. With the Psalmist, the wise person prays, "My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God" (Psalm 63:2b). Christ's way is not hidden from us, as though we are playing a game of hide and seek. It is "readily perceived" (Wisdom 6:12) by all who love God. We know the way through the Ten Commandments, the Beatitudes, Christ's great command to wash one another's feet, to love and serve with glad hearts. To act accordingly is to be wise, and those who are wise will be ready. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Parish Stewardship of Treasure :

Dynamic Catholic, Alive! Vigilance One of my struggles lately has been to live in the present moment and to be grateful for it with my whole heart, to embrace and cherish it as a gift from God. We constantly plan ahead for the future, which is necessary, but we often take it for granted. We never know how much time we will have on earth before God will call us home. Therefore, we must keep watch for the Lord in the present moment and live for Him. We can be like the wise virgins if we spend our time praying and cherishing moments with our friends and families. Think about how much time we waste playing video games, using social media excessively, and staring at screens. Let us re-prioritize and focus on the Lord at each moment so that we will be ready when He returns to call us home to the wedding feast of the Lamb (cf. Rev. 19:9). archstl.org/dynamic

November 12, 2017 - 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time “Therefore, stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour.” - MATTHEW 25:13 Many of us have put off doing something because we think we are too busy. We’ve all said, “I’ll do it later when I have time.” Unfortunately, too many of us apply this attitude to our Faith. Jesus’ call is urgent, in the here and now, in your current circumstances. Don’t delay, how is God calling you to use your gifts today?

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Marie Warden, mother of Nancy (Ed) Slade; and for Raymond Roques, brother of Yvonne Roques. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace.

Unfortunately, parishioner name and addresses had to be sent the first week of July, even though the books do not arrive in homes until October. This means that there will be parishioners that have passed away, moved out of parish, changed address or phone number, or moved into the parish during this time. We are sorry for any distress this causes. If you moved in to the parish during this time and did not receive a book, please come by the parish office or call and we will make sure you receive a book.

St Simon the Apostle Thirty-second Sunday of Ordinary Time November 12, 2017

Who is invited? The event is offered to ladies high-school age and older. You do not need to be a member of St. Simon the Apostle to attend. Take the opportunity to invite friends or family! Because of limited seating, reservations are required.

What is this event? Advent by Candlelight is a special evening for women to become renewed and refreshed before the Christmas rush begins. This is an opportunity to relax and refocus on the season of Advent – a wonderful time of waiting and anticipating His coming. This evening also includes uplifting Scripture readings, music by the Ursuline Young Adult Choir, and reflections focused on the Advent season by our guest speaker, Michele Pyatt! This is a free event; however, a goodwill offering at the end of the evening will be accepted.

How does it work? In an atmosphere lit only by candlelight, as a hostess, you set a banquet table (8 seats, including your seat). You may do this on your own or share the responsibility with a friend. You, as the hostess, may invite ladies to sit at your table, or allow the seats to be filled via the sign-up process. No requirement to be a hostess, you can also just sign to be included in a table with open spaces. You may bring fancy dinnerware, wine glasses, silverware, etc. or keep it simple. Your guest, then bring part of a meal of their choice (appetizers, entrée, and/or dessert) for those at your table.

For Reservations and Hostess Guidelines, contact

Terri Prange (314-566-1503) or Laurie Zeitler (314-368-2756).
