Hello Everyone!

Here we are in April already! The car season is upon us now. There is so much to do all of the time here in So. California, with lots of driving opportunities coming up - The 2006JONAT, Rolling British Car Day, and a club drive and lunch inJuly, just to name a few. Concours and Car shows are alsocoming around on the calendar. June 29th is Jaguar Car Dayat the San Diego County Fair. June 3rd is the San Diego AutoMuseum’s big annual show. Our own concours is on August6th. Soon it will be time to get out those polishing rags andwax up the kitty. If you are into scoring competition points,be sure to review the participation rules in the January/February issue of the Jaguar Journal. Bill Streitenbergercovers both the national and regional requirements for Jaguarentries.

March saw the launch of the new XK at Jaguar dealers aroundthe country. Both our San Diego club and the Los AngelesJOC had several members show their cars at the seven JaguarDealer training receptions in Carlsbad at the Four SeasonsAviara. There is an article in this issue, by yours truly, withlots of photos showing off the new cars very nicely.

The Dessert Night in Coronado at the Askren’s on March 11thwas fabulous! We had 21 people turn out with a tableful ofthe yummiest and prettiest goodies! Gayle played somewonderful jazz music as we sipped glasses of wine and talkedabout cars, drives, vacations, and current projects.

The Annual General Meeting was held at the end of the month, from March 30th to April 1st. At the time I was writing thisthough, it was still in the future. The plan was for DickCavicke and Randy Prine to be our club delegates, withmyself going along for the ride, so to speak. So in nextmonth’s column I’ll have a report for you about the resultsfrom the conference events.

The day after the end of the AGM was the Kick-off day forthe 2006 JONAT. I planned to go wave goodbye to thestarters before I got on the plane and headed home to SanDiego. As that too was still in the future at this writing, thetour will actually have come and gone through San Diegobefore you see any pictures from the take off in the Mayissue. I encourage you to plan to join us in at least some partof the tour in Southern California. Hazel Beck and PaulNovak are making the arrangements for the San Diego Sector.I had a sneak talk with Hazel about the route plans and it willbe a fun ride. Look for Hazel’s article in this issue with thedrive details. And don’t forget to go to the San Diego Sectorkickoff dinner on April the 18th at Shakespears Pub & Grill.

A driving we will go...Katherine

This composite of two photos shows some of the 36 new XKs lined up in front of the hotel on Thursday morning, March 2nd,ready for the training drives around Carlsbad and at a closed course in the Legoland parking lot.

was designed and created by Steven J. Bernstein, a top San Diego interior designer, who is also an active SDJC member. Hiscustom artwork in the lounge is a “must see” for Jaguar lovers. (While I was there Bill was meticulously rebuilding an electricwindow wiring harness for Steve Bernstein’s 1967 420G.)

Their daily workload varies, but each month they work on dozens of Jaguars and their work is exclusively Jaguars. Althoughthey work on all years and models, most of their customers’ cars are less than 25 years old. As far as unusual work, they haveworked on a D-Type racing replica and a car called the “Kougar”. (An open wheeled roadster made in the 60,s using a Jaguardrive-train.). As far as technical challenges, a few years ago they installed high performance steering, suspension and brakingsystems on a V-8 equipped Series III XJ6 with over 700 HP. The most difficult work they have performed for a customer wastrying to get an old XJ-S running that was towed in, after sitting neglected for many years, and after some “friend” had already halftaken it apart trying to fix it.

Trace and Bill recommend that Jaguar owners in need of repairs should always bring their cars into a reputable shop sothat it can be professionally evaluated. Trying to shop around for cost estimates over the phone may only result in ending up at thewrong shop with a more expensive fix than was needed.

As far as specific recommendations for our club members Trace and Bill include:1) Have your car checked by a Jaguar trained technician at least once a year. This can be done along with routine oil

change. That way you’ll know that your car is in a safe condition and the required preventative work is done.2) For older Jaguars, owners should check the oil and coolant level regularly but at least once a month. (I would

recommend more frequently if you drive them a lot like I do)3) Check the air pressure in all tires with a pressure gage at least every 2 weeks. Also, periodically check the tires for

wear, especially on the inside edges of the front tires. This will save money on tire replacement. Trace and Bill haveobserved that Jaguar tires seem to wear on the front inside edges first, and that a simple toe set alignment once a yearmay help make you tires last longer.

4) Have the periodic maintenance performed as recommended by the manufacturer. A minor service every 7,500 or10,000 miles, with a simple oil & filter change in between will keep the car in good shape for many years. Complete majorservice is recommended at 30, 60 and 90K intervals.

SDJC members can contact Trace and Bill at Coventry Cars of San Diego for any and all your Jaguar maintenance needs. In addition to routine servicing, repairs and restoration work they also handle interior, bodywork and paint estimates. (Repairingand painting the new style, painted bumpers is a specialty of theirs). Due to their increased work load from all the newer cars theyare considering adding another technician later this year. They are open Monday through Fridays from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm(except for lunch on Monday’s when they all head out for sushi from 12:30 until 2 pm). They try their best to make it fun andfriendly to bring your car in to their shop. With their complementary shuttle service (please call them first about setting up thearrangements), waiting room and excellent service they make having your car worked on there a good experience.

Trace Luckett and Bill O’Brien would like to say a resounding “Thank You to all of our wonderful San Diego Jaguar Clubcustomers. You have made these past 10 Years in business a very enjoyable experience”. Remember to mention that you are aSDJC member when you first contact them for work and show them your JCNA card when you drop off you car for their clubdiscount. On a large job or several smaller jobs during the year, this discount alone may pay for your annual club membership. Now that’s a great deal!!But the Prior Owner Said………….Sooner or later we all become a “Prior Owner” (PO) of a Jaguar or worse yet, the dreaded “Dumb Prior Owner” DPO. Hereis sample of what POs have said, and a translation of what they likely meant. Let me know if any of these sound familiar or if youhave others to offer. Some examples are attributed to various members of Jag-Lovers emails lists.

PO: I’ve changed the oil religiously.Translation: Every time the oil light comes on I add two quarts of oil and pray I’ll get to work before the light comes on again.I’ve only added oil. I’m not sure exactly where the oil filter is. Every real Jaguar owner carries a case of oil around in their trunk.

PO: It must be a fuse.Translation: Every time I use that item, the fuse blows. So I keep replacing the fuse with a higher rated one and that fixes it untilthe next time. What’s that funny smell?

PO: That’s odd. I’ve never seen the windshield wipers do that before.

material inside was saturated with brake fluid and the cork no longer floated in the brake fluid. The cork was remarkably similarin shape to the cork found in a bottle ofwine. If you have this problem, first goout and get a good bottle of wine with acork. Then remove and disassembleyour brake reservoir level float switchand replace the old cork (it is after allnow 37 years old) with one from thebottle of wine. Reassemble the switchand test it to see that it works. You shouldbe all set for another 37 years. Whenyou have confirmed that it’s fixed, thendrink the wine. Or better yet, invite meover to drink the wine with you. <grin>
