A Message from our Principal, Ms Pantelis

A Great School We have had an amazing start to the term with our Kindergarten and Year 6 Teddy Bear’s Picnic, School Spectacular rehearsals, Year 5 Leadership Day, Peer Support activities, K-2 Sports Fun Day, Gymnastics, Year 3 day camp at Deer Park and the Year 1 excursions to the Sutherland Hospital to name just a few of the many and varied opportunities that our students have participated in. It was wonderful to see the Year 4 students meet their Pen Pal from Cabramatta PS yesterday. The Year 4 students have enjoyed sharing their experiences with students from another school via this initiative and have managed to develop some friendships along the way. We look forward to meeting the Cabramatta PS community again on Tuesday 12 November.

K-2 Sports Day What a wonderful day we have had today especially with the K-2 Sports day. It was fabulous seeing the students dressed in their colour group, participating in sporting activities and having lots of fun. Thank you to all the staff and Mrs Bishop for coordinating this special event. It was great to see many parents join us as well.

When a child is sick We do ask parents to please keep their child at home if their child is sick in order to try and prevent infections from spreading. Attached to this newsletter is an information sheet from the Department of Health regarding some infectious diseases of children. Thank you in anticipation for your support in this matter.

410 BURRANEER BAY PUBLIC SCHOOL NEWSLETTER TERM 4 – WEEK 2

161 – 165 Burraneer Bay Road, Cronulla NSW 2230 T 95234869 F: 95441426 Website : www.burraneerb-p.schools.nsw.edu.au Email : [email protected]

Communication Please ensure that urgent messages for students are phoned through to the school prior to 2:45pm. Please do not rely on emails as they are only viewed at certain times throughout the day. We request that parents email staff members via the school’s email address with attention to their name. We appreciate your support in this matter.

2020 Class Placement and Structure During Term 4 the school spends a lot of time planning the class structures, staffing and class allocations for the following year. We have started planning classes for 2020. To do this as best we can, we need to know about children who may not have enrolled to begin Kindergarten, anyone considering repetition for their child, or anyone who is leaving for another school. Please contact the school office on 9523 4869 or email the school to let us know. Many factors are considered when grouping children into classes for the next school year and it is never an easy task to get it right for every child. Besides the Department’s guidelines about the numbers in each class at different year levels we also consider:

academic achievement levels

special needs & medical issues

relationships that should be split or continued

behavioural issues or concerns

numbers of boys and girls in a class

teacher allocation If parents have particular concerns or issues about the placement of their child for next year, now is the time to let me know so we can consider this information when forming classes. Coming to discuss a child’s placement next year once classes have been finalised is too late. We always undertake to do the very best we can for every child. Please remember it is not always possible to meet all requests. It is not appropriate to make specific requests that involve other people’s children or for a particular teacher to teach or not teach your child’s class. By the end of Term 4 we will have tentative class structures developed, but as we need to confirm enrolments early in Term 1 2020, classes and teachers will not be announced until next year. Please write to me Victoria Pantelis or email the school by Friday 1 November with any information that you feel should be considered regarding your child. I’m unable to individually acknowledge requests as they are considerations and please understand that late requests cannot be taken into consideration. Once classes are formed I like to have them finalised with no changes unless in very exceptional circumstances. I appreciate your understanding that moving students may cause huge disruption for all other classes across the grade or stage and does not often solve the issue.

Twilight Markets The P&C have been working very hard in setting up our Twilight Markets this Friday from 5pm-9pm. It’s always a wonderful opportunity to come together and help support our school. There will be fantastic stalls, entertainment and an auction. I look forward to seeing you there.

Happiness is an inside job. William Arthur Ward - 1921-1994 - Writer

Warmest Regards, Ms.V.Pantelis.

Deputy Principal Report: Mrs Moss

Please Slow Down outside our School

The school executive were extremely concerned last week about the number of near misses outside our school on our Burraneer Bay and Gannons Road crossings. Executive staff supervised these crossings last week when the Road Safety officers were not available. 40km/h school zones help protect children on their way to and from school. This lower speed limit helps to reduce the risk and potential severity of a crash. Staff noted that community members (including some of our own parents) failed to stop at the crossings to allow children to cross and travelled at speeds that were in excess of the 40km/h limit.

We all have the responsibility to do everything we can to ensure the safety of our students.

Please Slow Down. Please walk your child into the school when possible.

The areas directly outside the school on Gannons Road and Burraneer Bay Road are designated ‘Drop Off Zones’. In these zones parents and carers are able to legally drop off or pick up their children within a two-minute timeframe. The driver must remain in their car. He /She is able to pull into the drop off zone behind the last car ( if there are cars already using the zone) to allow children to get in or out of the car. The driver is not allowed to open or close the boot or assist with doors. A large fine and the loss of 3 demerit points will result if the driver is seen doing so.

Bus zones also exist on Burraneer Bay Road and Gannons Road directly behind the drop off zones. Parents are asked to keep the bus zones free so that buses can access them and our children remain safe. Parking in a bus zone also incurs a large fine.

Dogs in Schools The following article has appeared in numerous newsletters. Please help us by carefully reading this and following our instructions. It is very important that we continue to revisit areas that impact on student wellbeing. Despite our requests, on Tuesday morning we had five dogs tied to the front fence of our school. A reminder to all members of our school community that as determined by local government policy, dogs are not to be on school grounds or within 10 metres of the school. This rule has been made to ensure the safety of all students. Our office staff have had to remind a few people about this rule again this week and the feedback they received was not encouraging.

No dogs are to be brought onto the school grounds

No dogs are to be tied up to the school fence while you come into the school to drop off or pick up your children

Levi Project We started creating bookmarks to sell for Levi’s Project at the start of Term 3. We worked hard all through recess and lunch for days making beautiful bookmarks to sell. Our group of friends helped us throughout the way and in week 5 we finally started selling. We raised a mammoth amount of money, $226.20 to be precise. We were so delighted with the amount of money we raised for such a great cause. Thank you to all the people who bought our book marks and supported this cause. By Olivia W and Olivia C
