A Message from our Principal, Ms Pantelis

A Supportive Community A big thank you to all the parents who attended the Trivia Night on Saturday evening. It was a great night and I feel so very blessed to have such supportive parents that do so much for the benefit of the students at the school. Thank you to our P&C President, Mr Craig Bulmer and the rest of the committee for their ongoing efforts and to Mrs Dani Stonham for organising this event. There were many who assisted and donated even though they were unable to attend, thank you.

Revised Enrolment Procedures There has been a lot of discussion regarding the revised enrolment policy from the Department of Education. I have attached a parent information flyer to this newsletter for your information.

Talented Students Congratulations to the Debating Team for their outstanding efforts. Thank you to Miss Rennie for coaching the team and organising this week’s final against Heathcote. Congratulations to the students who have been successful in making the Public Speaking School Finals. Special thanks to Mrs Maidment and Mrs Stenning for coordinating this event. We have many students performing at the Sutherland Entertainment Centre as part of the Sutherland Shire Schools Music Festival. The Junior and Senior Choirs and the Year 2 Mixed Dance Group (Wednesday) and Year 5 Girls Dance have spent a great deal of time rehearsing for their evening performances. The Senior Choir and Year 5 Dance performed on Tuesday night and the Junior Choir will be performing on Wednesday August 21st. We wish all our students who are competing in Day 1 of the Cronulla Zone Athletics Carnival tomorrow the very best of luck __________________________________________________________________________________________

I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed.

I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed. Michael Jordan

Warmest Regards, Ms.V.Pantelis

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL REPORT Student Safety Our focus this week is on Student Safety. It is very important that we are mindful of student safety at all times. There have been a number of times over the past week when we have had to revisit one of our school rules -‘To be in the right place at the right time doing the right thing.’ Student safety is very important to us. You can help to keep your children safe by

Ensuring your children are not in the playground before 8:40am unless they are attending a

supervised activity like band or dance. All students from Kindergarten to Year 6 who are in the

playground before 8:40am are to sit on the silver seats outside the administration block. They are to

remain on these seats until the teachers on morning duty collect them. Students are not to wait in

classrooms, in the hall or under the Hall Cola.

Ensuring your children are collected from school at 3:10pm. There should be no students or parents

on the school grounds after 3:30pm. The only exception is students who go to BAC.

Reminding your child that they should never be in a classroom or building without a teacher present.

To ensure we maintain a safe environment we would like to remind you that

Visitors and students should not be on the school grounds outside supervised times.

Supervision is from 8:40am when a teacher is rostered onto supervision duty.

The playground is not for afternoon play. Our gates are locked from 3:40pm. This is to ensure that our

school is safe, clean and staff and resources are ready for the following teaching day. We also have a

responsibility to BAC who uses our playground areas for their before and after school activities

outside school hours.

Students and carparks don’t mix. School carparks are not for parent access. Please don’t use them.

Respecting local residents The residents of Crusade Place and Coral Road have once again expressed their concerns about illegal parking, especially during afternoon pick up. They are convinced that the situation is escalating and student safety is at risk because of the increased number of parents who are parking illegally. Please do not park over or in their driveways or at the end of the cul de sac. The police and Sutherland Council have been contacted by residents to help sort out this issue.

School Crossing Safety The School Crossing Supervisor program is a statewide program that contributes to the safety of primary school students. School crossing supervisors help students use the crossings on roads adjacent to or nearby schools.

Our School Crossing supervisors have expressed their concerns about student safety at the crossings. A number of students and their parents walk across the crossing before the supervisor has been able to stop the traffic. This is dangerous as cars often proceed through the crossing without warning.

Students and parents must wait on the footpath until the Crossing Supervisor indicates it is safe for them to cross.

Year 6 State Parliament and the NSW Art Gallery Excursion Year 6 visited State Parliament and the NSW Art Gallery on Wednesday 14th August. In the Legislative Assembly they met Mark Speakman, our local member and Attorney General. They were involved in role play activities where they debated a Bill about having to go to school on Saturdays. In the Legislative Council they debated an amendment to the Bill where they argued about adding an extra hour to each day at school. At the Art Gallery Year 6 appreciated many different forms of art ranging from Aboriginal to Japanese and more traditional art forms painted by famous Australian painters.
