BURRANEER BAY PUBLIC SCHOOL NEWSLETTER TERM 3 – WEEK 10

A Message from our Principal, Ms Pantelis

Leading the Way

As our school embarks on the journey into the selection process of our 2019 School Captains and Prefects, we are focussing on developing our students’ leadership skills. The Year 5 students participated in the Burn Bright Leadership Program on Tuesday. The students had an opportunity to engage in a variety of activities aimed at developing their understanding of student leadership and the skills needed to be an effective leader. Year 5 students were encouraged to “think like a leader”, to cooperate with others and to accept the contribution of all team members. Thank you to Mrs Nakkan and the Year 5 teachers for organising such a successful day. The Year 5 students really enjoyed the experience.

Reading

It is important for all children to read every day and I encourage all our students to read throughout the holiday break. Reading books improves communication skills and vocabulary. Reading is an essential skill that is required to achieve success in all key learning areas. We have an amazing library as a resource for your children to access.

“Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.” Sir Richard Steele

A Safe Community

A reminder of the following road safety behaviours when picking up or dropping off your children at school

Safe driving in 40km/h school zones

Safety around school crossings

Parking safely near the school

Children at least 8 years old hold an adult’s hand at all times

Adult to take or meet the child at the school gate. Please do not wait in the no stopping zone as this affects the flow of traffic. The areas directly outside the school on Gannons Road and Burraneer Bay Road are designated ‘drop off zones’.

BURRANEER BAY PUBLIC SCHOOL NEWSLETTER TERM 3 – WEEK 10

Tomorrow is the last day of Term 3. All students and staff return to school on Monday 15 October.

A reminder that in Terms 1 and 4 students are expected to wear their summer uniform and in Terms 2 and 3, students are expected to wear their winter uniform. The support we receive from our school community regarding high expectations of the wearing of correct school uniform is greatly appreciated. A reminder to all students that our school socks are white not black. Socks are to be seen and are to cover the ankles. All students are required to wear black school shoes except on Sports Day. Sport for all students in Years 3-6 is on Friday. K-2 students have sport on a Thursday. Our school hat is an extremely important part of our school uniform and is to be worn before school, at recess and at lunch.

Term 4 is always an exciting term and an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of our students through our special Presentation Day Assemblies, as well as other special end of year events.

Success is how high you bounce when you hit bottom.

Warmest Regards,

Ms.V.Pantelis.

BURRANEER BAY PUBLIC SCHOOL NEWSLETTER TERM 3 – WEEK 10

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

What an amazing term! It has been wonderful to show case to parents and the community the many activities in which our students have been involved. Not many schools can boast that their students - celebrated the 125 Year Anniversary of the school; won the Sydney Dance Eisteddfod and danced at the Sutherland Shire Schools Music Festival and Dance Extravaganza. Debated a bill in Parliament House, skied on the slopes at Thredbo and participated in the Dance Sport Gala evening at Homebush. Won the Stage 1 Public Speaking competition; made a movie in Digi Ed; went to Symbio and watched Ducklings hatch in their classroom. Lay in the hammocks at Hyde Park Barracks, participated in the Learn to Swim Swimming Scheme and learnt all about Space at the Science Space in Wollongong. Created wonderful artworks in Raw Art and enjoyed learning about Healthy Lifestyles with Healthy Harold. Visited the Maritime Museum; explored the rock pools at Botany Bay, visited the Nan Tien Temple in Wollongong and explored Dinosaur bones at a Dinosaur Day. All this and so much more! Thank you for supporting all of our school initiatives. Burraneer Bay Public School really is amazing.

Students are to be in the right place at the right time doing the right thing.

There have been a number of times over the past week when we have had to revisit one of our school rules – ‘To be in the right place at the right time doing the right thing.’ Student safety is very important to us. You can help to keep your children safe by

Ensuring your children are not in the playground before 8:40am unless they are attending a

supervised activity like band or dance. All students from Kindergarten to Year 6 who are in the

playground before 8:40am are to sit on the silver seats outside the administration block. They are

to remain on these seats until the teachers on morning duty collect them.

Students are not to be in the hall with a brother /sister who may be doing dance or band or under

the Hall Cola.

Peer Support A reminder that Peer Support commences for all students next term. Our Year 6 students will run this program and all students from Kindergarten to Year 6 will be involved. The program will commence at 2:15 pm on Friday October 19th and will continue every Friday until the end of the term. It is very important that all children participate in this program as it helps to develop the leadership and social skills of all our students. Interruptions need to be kept to a minimum. Please try to avoid making appointments during this time.

Attendance An audit of student attendance this week shows that there are a high number of children arriving late to school on a regular basis. Please ensure your child arrives at school before 9:10am. We have talked regularly about the importance of regular attendance at school and the positive impact being at school every day, on time has on your children. Thank you to all the students who are at school on time, every day. If your child is away from school, you are required to provide a note stating the reason for your child’s absence when they return to school. This table provided by the Department of Education is a powerful reminder of the importance of regular attendance.
